Shawn Corey Carter
(English Shawn Corey Carter; born December 4, 1969, Brooklyn, New York), better known as
Jay Z
(Jay-Z [1]; previously the pseudonym was written as
Jay-Z
[2]) is an American rapper. 14 of his albums reached the top of the Billboard 200. This is a record among all solo artists and the second most in history after The Beatles, who had 19 albums that reached number one in the United States.[3] Multiple Grammy Award winner.
In 2020, he took first place in the list of the wealthiest hip-hop artists according to Forbes, bringing his net worth to $900 million[4]. According to Forbes magazine, the rapper's income from June 2020 to June 2020 was $76.5 million[5].
Biography
Jay Z was born in Brooklyn. His father left the family when he was still a child. Shawn Carter was known as Jazzy, which later evolved into Jay-Z. Along the way, he changed several names: Jiggaman, HOV and Hova.
He began recording in the early 1990s, performing with rapper The Notorious BIG. His performing style was almost entirely based on impromptu. Knowing that record labels were exploiting artists, Jay Z, Damon Dash and Kareem "Biggs" Burke formed their own label, Roc-a-Fella Records (Roc comes from Rockefeller's
). In 1995, they formed Roc-A-Fella Enterprises. The group of companies includes:
- Roc-A-Fella Records (rap record label)
- Roc-A-Fella Films (film production)
- Roc-A-Wear (production and sale of hip-hop clothing, founded 1999)
- Team Roc
- Roc World.
Back in 1999, Jay-Z rapped in a song in Mariah Carey's "Heartbreaker" video, which topped the Billboard Hot 100. In 2003, Jay-Z returned to the top of the US pop charts with the track "Crazy in Love", recorded with him friend and now wife of Beyoncé[6]. He is the founder and co-owner of Roc-A-Fella Records, as well as the former CEO of Def Jam Recordings[7], co-owner of the 40/40 Club, creator of the Rocawear clothing line, and co-owner of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets[8].
"Money doesn't mean anything." Jay-Z becomes the first billionaire rapper
According to Forbes, shares in alcohol companies, real estate and music labels bring the musician $1 billion annually

Jay-Z is the first billionaire rapper. The 49-year-old performer was helped to make such a fortune by selling drugs in his youth. He himself told this story several years ago: life in a poor large family led Shawn Carter (Jay-Z's real name) into the criminal world. That one also turned out to be a business: there he gained knowledge of conducting trade relations and budget planning.
Then there was an acquaintance with the musician Jaz-O, famous in the 1990s, for the first time he appeared as his backing singer. Nobody was in a hurry to sign a contract with Jay-Z, so in 1996 he founded his own label, Roc-A-Fella Records, to record his first album. Jay-Z was helped in this by connections at the Def Jam record company, and in 2004 the musician already became its general director.
In the early 2000s, Jay-Z enjoyed commercial success. Expensive cars, gold chains - Jay-Z was one of the creators of the image of American rap at the beginning of the century. His tracks regularly took leading positions in Billboard; the record holder was the song Crazy in Love: it stayed in first place for eight weeks in a row. By the way, he recorded it in a duet with his future wife Beyoncé. Jay-Z earned money for the growth of Roc-A-Fella Records, which helped other, still young wards of the company: Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Rihanna.
By the mid-2000s, the musician plunged headlong into business. Jay-Z acquired 100% of the shares of the French alcohol company Armand de Brignac. Prices per bottle start at $300. This is the musician’s largest asset—$310 million a year. In 2012, he also founded the cognac brand D'Usse, although together with Bacardi: they own a larger share of the income, Jay-Z receives $100 million annually.
A family of musicians with Uber has an interesting story. In 2013, when investing in the taxi service was all the rage among celebrities, Jay-Z invested $2 million in it and then sent the founder another $5 million in an attempt to secretly get a larger share. He considered this insolence and returned the money to the rapper. But two years later, Beyoncé asked Uber to pay in shares for her performance at the company’s corporate event. Now her income with the company is three times higher than that of her husband - $300 million a year.
Jay-Z's property also includes music labels, an art collection, the Tidal streaming service and much more. After calculating all this, Forbes calculated the income at $1 billion. However, in the material, the publication only once mentioned the musician’s expenses for the “superstar lifestyle.” But Jay-Z does not look like a person who will simply throw money away, says judge and organizer of rap battles Dmitry Egorov.
Dmitry Egorov judge and organizer of rap battles “He [always] respected money, understood: to earn money, you need to spend it. To maintain such an image, he spent a lot, but it was never a waste of money. I think this situation is not about him, as in the case of MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice or 50 Cent, who seemed to declare himself bankrupt. Yes, he has big lifestyle expenses, but it's not throwing money away on drugs, buying ice palaces and burning money to stay warm."
Businessman, talented musician and ideal husband. As fellow rapper Swizz Beatz said of Jay-Z, “If he's a billionaire now, imagine what he'll become.”

Jay Z
Jay Z is a famous rapper and influential figure in modern hip-hop music. His net worth is more than $450 million. 12 albums have been at the top of the BillboardTop200. He is the founder of the Roc-A-Fella Records label and the creator of the Rocawear clothing line. Engaged in financing several large-budget films. Real name Shawn Corey Carter. Born December 4, 1969 in Brooklyn, New York. The area in which he grew up was quite criminal. His parents divorced, and he was left to his own devices. He grew up on the streets. Since childhood, he earned his living by legal and other means. His dream was to become a famous rapper. At the age of 16, he began to make his way into show business. In the beginning, the young rapper Jaz-O helped him a lot. He had a contract, but success did not come. He taught me how to navigate the rap industry. Jay Z recorded several joint compositions with Jaz-O and played in the group Original Flavor, but his career did not move forward. Tired of sitting idle, Jay Z opens the Roc-a-Fella Records label. His friends Damon Dash and Kareem Burke helped him. The record company Priority Records, and later Def Jam, agreed to distribute the discs. In 1996, the first album entitled “Reasonable Doubt” was released. The single “Ain't No Nigga” made a greater impression. He has received recognition for his frank, honest lyrics. The rapper did not work with everyone, but only with the best, so among his producers are people such as Clark Kent, DJ Premier, Teddy Riley, Trackmasters, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz. Such famous artists as Notorious BIG, Ja Rule, DMX, Ludacris, Missy Eliot, Snoop Dogg, Too Short and many others have worked with him. The second album “In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, which came out in 1997, was better received. In a short time, he soared to third place on the chart. The second album was replete with duets with celebrities. The style has changed a little: from gangsta rap it moved to pop rap. Tracks from the third album “Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life" quickly filled the radio airwaves. "Can I Get A..." and "Hard Knock Life" finished in the Billboard Top 20. For this album, he received a Grammy Award in the Best Rap Album category. Since 1998, each new release by the rapper has always reached the first position on the Billboard 200. This fate did not escape his fourth album, “Vol. 3…LifeAndTimesOfS. Carter", published in 1999. The fifth album, Dynasty Roc la Familia, released in 2000, became a hit. It had everything: breakthrough hits, celebrities. The sound of "Dynasty Roc la Familia" was created by Kayne West, Just Blaze and the Neptunes production team. In 2001, he headlined Hot 97's Summer Jam in New York City. Here he did not speak very flatteringly about Prodigy. Already in his fifth album “Blueprint” he addressed accusatory remarks to the artist Nas, who did not remain in debt. Fans followed the developments with interest, which served both participants in the skirmish as additional advertising. The fifth album was interesting not only for this, it had a large number of good tracks. Critics called this album the best album of the year. During all the time he worked with other performers, he accumulated his own tracks. He released 25 of them on the double disc “The BlueprintІ: The Gift & the Curse” in 2002. In 2003, an album called “The Black Album” was released, the disc went triple platinum, and more than 3.3 million copies were sold in America. In 2006, the disc “Kingdom Come” was released, which also became incredibly popular, selling 3 million copies. On September 8, 2009, an album entitled “The Blueprint 3” was released. The relationship with Beyoncé began with the recording of the joint song “03 Bonnie & Clyde”. In the summer of 2003, they had another joint composition, and six months later Jay Z called her his bride. On April 4, 2008 they got married. On January 7, 2012, Beyoncé gave birth to a daughter, whom her new parents named Blue Ivy Carter.

Musician career
The dark past was a good school of life for Carter and helped him understand how the world of business lives. When he became more or less wealthy, he accidentally met the rapper Big Jaz, who was not a famous musician, but turned out to be very useful for Sean’s future. Thanks to him, Shawn Carter got into the music industry.
First, the guys recorded the track The Originators together, then Sean performed for some time with the group Original Flavor, but dreamed of working solo. Record labels refused to sign him. And then Carter invested all his savings in founding his company Roc-A-Fella Records. Everything was the way he wanted it, and no one dictated their rules to him: Jay first released his debut single In My Lifetime, and in 1996 he recorded his first album, Reasonable Doubt. The start was successful, the rapper went on tour across the United States, and began collaborating with musicians who already had a big name - for example, Mary J. Blige. Jay-Z released an album every year. Third - Vol. 2 Hard Knock Life - brought him his first Grammy statuette.
Jay was brought to the top of the charts not only by his solo works, but also by duets - the song Heartbreaker, recorded with Mariah Carey, single 03 Bonnie & Clyde, sung together with his future wife Beyoncé. In 2003, the lovers released the hit Crazy in Love, after which Jay announced the end of his solo career. But, of course, he didn’t leave forever and shook up the world of music in 2006 with his new album Kingdom Come.
Now Jay-Z is one of the richest (his net worth is estimated at more than $500 million) and successful musicians: all 12 of his albums have been at the top of the Billboard 200 rankings. Of the modern performers, no one has broken his record, and in the past only The Beatles achieved greater success - they reached the top with 19 albums.

How do Jay Z and other rappers make money?
Jay-Z
A couple of years ago, the combined capital of Jay-Z and Beyoncé reached a billion dollars. Most of this amount belongs to Shawn Carter (Jay Z's real name). Despite the fact that he had a very successful career in hip-hop, Carter did not earn most of his money from his own music. He has a decent stake in Roc Nation Records, the label that manages the careers of Rihanna, Shakira, and Alicia Keys. Jay-Z owns the Rocawear clothing brand, a number of restaurants, and shares in a number of successful projects. Carter made an extremely successful investment in the Tidal streaming service, and also invested in the Armand de Brignac champagne brand.
Lil Wayne
Trukfit is a men's clothing brand created by rapper Lil Wayne. Trukfit (an abbreviation for The Reason U Kill For It) is T-shirts, jeans, hoodies. The brand was launched in 2012, its collections are based on the rapper's personal tastes, these are things that he wears himself. Trukfit's first collections were collaborations with the Macy's chain of stores, but then Lil Wayne went free. At the same time, the participation of the rapper himself in the creation of collections comes down to saying “yes” or “no” to the proposals of his team.
“Designers email me sketches and I just say what I think,” Wayne said.
The musician is more actively involved in other business projects. He manages the affairs of the Young Money label himself, determining policies and choosing artists. The rapper fought fiercely with business partner Mack Maine for the right to manage Young Money and won, buying a controlling stake and becoming the sole owner. Last year he also launched an eponymous clothing brand, more sophisticated than Trukfit, although the format remains the same: T-shirts, baseball caps, bomber jackets.
What else? Wayne invested in the French watch brand Wize&Ope, advertised various foreign clothing brands, and opened a sports agency. Things are going well, and today the rapper's fortune is estimated at $150 million.
Dr. Dre
The legendary rapper and producer who discovered Eminem, Dr. Dre has long moved into the category of “first a businessman, then a musician.” His main achievement is Beats Electronics, known for its Beats by Dre headphones. Dre founded the company in 2006 and took the market by storm. Six years later, 64% of all headphones over $100 sold in the States were from Beats Electronics. By that time, the company's value exceeded a billion dollars. In 2014, Apple Inc. acquired the brand for 3 billion, which became the largest acquisition in Apple history.
Diddy
Another rapper who gave up music long ago for the sake of business. 800 million in his accounts were brought to him by intuition and proper management. Today, Combs Enterprises, a Diddy-run company, has a portfolio full of it all. Sean John clothing brand, Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group music agency, Combs Wine & Spirits (wine), AQUAhydrate (drinking water), Revolt (Revolt Films produces film and video content, Revolt TV is a television network), Ciroc (vodka). Some projects belong entirely to Sean Combs (the rapper's real name), while others are investment projects, such as Ciroc, where he owns half the shares.
Kanye West
Despite the rapper's declarations of bankruptcy several years ago, Kanye's affairs are now in perfect order. At the end of last year, his income exceeded $150 million. West’s main income is the Yeezy brand, created together with Nike, and then changed its partner to Adidas. Kanye works with Adidas on unique terms, receiving 15% of sales and a fee for marketing ideas. This despite the fact that the Yeezy brand itself remained behind him. This year, West's total sneaker sales will likely top $1.5 billion, and 15% of that total will be his. So consider it. Plus, Kanye is making some money from the GOOD label (among whose clients, for a moment, are Kid Cudi and Travis Scott). Well, unlike Diddy and Dr. Dre, West is actively involved in his own music. His latest album, Jesus Is King, sold 260,000 copies in its first week of release, hitting number one on the Billboard chart.

Shawn Corey Carter ( born December 4, 1969, Brooklyn, New York), better known as Jay Z, is an American rapper and multiple Grammy Award winner. His 13 albums reached number one on the Billboard charts. In the national American history of rock music, this is second only to The Beatles, who had 19 albums reach number one in the United States.
Jay-Z began recording in the early 1990s, performing with rapper Notorious BIG. His performing style was almost entirely based on impromptu. In 1999, he was accused of stabbing one of his competitors, and in 2002 he declared war on the authoritative rapper Nas, whom he called a “black Republican.” In 2003-2006, he was on sabbatical, which did not stop him from remixing several of his tracks with compositions of the rock band Linkin Park and tour America in the company of R. Kelly, which ended in a brawl between the artists.
Thanks to the numerous scandals that accompany Jay Z's activities, he became one of the most popular hip-hop artists of the 2000s. Back in 1999, he rapped in Mariah Carey’s song (and video) “Heartbreaker,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100. In 2003, Jay Z returned to the top of the US pop charts with the track “Crazy in Love,” recorded together with his then friend and now wife of Beyoncé. He is the founder and co-owner of Roc-A-Fella Records (where Kanye West records), former CEO of Def Jam, co-owner of the 40/40 Club, creator of the Rocawear clothing line, and co-owner of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets.
Jay-Z is married to American R&B singer Beyoncé. In 2002, they worked on the song "'03 Bonnie & Clyde". Jay-Z also appeared on Beyoncé's famous single "Crazy in Love" from her debut album Dangerously in Love. Participated in the creation of the songs "Déjà Vu" and "Upgrade U" from the album B'Day. In the video for the latest song, Beyoncé humorously played up his behavior. Beyoncé claims that not having their personal lives discussed publicly has helped them. They got married on April 4, 2008.[9] On January 7, 2012, Beyoncé gave birth to a daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. In June 2020, Beyonce gave birth to twins - a boy and a girl.
