The other day, Laima Vaikule opened up and talked about key events in her life that seriously influenced her worldview. The artist shared her memories of a terrible incident in which she unwittingly became a participant. This happened when she went on tour to the Turkish city of Adjara in a car with musicians and the director of the ensemble of the Riga Pop Orchestra, where she was taken to work. Along the way, the unexpected happened - an event that truly shocked Vaikule.
“A terrible incident happened. We were driving along the highway, the leader of our ensemble was driving, four musicians were behind,” the singer recalls. “At a turn, we drove into another car, a man jumped out, ran up to our leader’s window and started hitting him through the open window. But he can’t get out. The musicians jumped out, began to pull the driver away, and a fight broke out. And suddenly a shot. I ran out of the car and saw one of the musicians fall to the ground. It turned out that there was a policeman in that car who fired without warning. With one shot he wounded two. As a result, two of our guys ended up in the hospital, and two in prison for fighting.”
After the incident, Laima Vaikule could not travel outside the country because she was involved in the case as a witness. The young performer was only 16 years old at the time. For a long time, she was forced to attend court hearings, at one of which a policeman even knelt in front of her so that she would change her testimony in his favor. As a result, according to Vaikule, someone gave a bribe to someone and the two musicians were sent to prison. The rest, after being discharged from the hospital, went to Israel and were forced to end their careers.
This story changed a lot in Laima’s fate. Before the tour, she lived in the house of the director of the ensemble, away from her parents, but after the criminal story that happened, the colleague’s wife simply kicked her out. The young singer was left homeless and had to wander. Once she even spent the night with the gypsies.
The future pop star did not tell her parents about what happened, however, later, when she saw Laima thin and pale, her mother guessed that there was trouble. The singer had to admit everything.
The public's favorite told about other juicy details of her life. For example, about the fact that she is not officially married to her chosen one Andrei, with whom she has been together for 48 years, because she always wants to feel free. Moreover, the singer never spoke words of love to him. Only her dog, a Rottweiler, who is no longer alive, was awarded them.
Having defeated a serious illness, breast cancer, Laima Vaikule did not risk having children, although she wanted it. She had previously had abortions. The first time for the reason that she was afraid to leave the stage, and the second time because her beloved Andrei did not want the child. But the artist does not despair: she completely devotes herself to the stage and this is the main pleasure in her life.
Vaikule also revealed the secret of her slimness. She admitted that she doesn’t like to eat, although sometimes she even starts to shake because of hunger.
“I’m a little kid, to the point of madness,” says the star in an interview with OK! magazine. — I can eat a cheese sandwich in the morning and not eat anything else until the evening. I may not eat until tomorrow morning. When I start losing weight, I look forward to those days when it's easy to go without food. For example, I start eating rice with water, nothing else. But if suddenly during the day I feel like shaking is starting, I quit this diet.”
Now 63-year-old Laima Vaikule is spending time in Jurmala, where her festival “Laima. Rendezvous. Jurmala". Kristina Opolais, Intars Busulis, Aja Andreva, the DaGamba group, Janis Stibelis and many other popular artists whose names are well known to both the domestic and Latvian public will perform at the Dzintari Concert Hall.
