Lyubov Sokolova was born on July 31, 1921 in the small town of Ivanovo-Voznesensk. Her parents were simple working people: her mother worked as a salesperson in a store, her father was a cabinetmaker. The family kept a farm - a vegetable garden, animals, and many responsibilities for caring for livestock and other housework lay on the shoulders of young Lyuba.

The girl's acting talent manifested itself at a very tender age. At the age of 5-6, Lyuba loved to dress up in her mother’s old dresses and shawls and organize performances for her family. When the girl grew up, she began to attend a drama club and took part in school amateur performances.

Young Lyuba spent all her free time from household chores and studies at the Ivanovo Musical Comedy Theater. Theater workers, noticing the schoolgirl’s love for high art, began to let her into performances for free.

Lyuba’s mother cherished the hope that her daughter would enter the conservatory. However, the head of the school club said that the girl had no talent for music. As a result, in 1940, Lyubov Sokolova, after graduating from school, came to Leningrad and entered the Herzen Pedagogical Institute.

Already as a student, she learned about the recruitment of students to the acting school at Lenfilm. Lyubov immediately rushed to the audition and won over the committee, including the course director, Sergei Gerasimov, with a monologue from Chekhov’s “The Seagull.” By the way, Sokolova was one of more than a thousand applicants, but only 22 people passed the commission. Since then, her life and biography have been closely connected with acting, theater and cinema.

Lyuba's happiness knew no bounds! She managed to do everything - go to lectures at the pedagogical institute, and not miss classes at the acting school, and even worked part-time, carrying suitcases at the station, in order to somehow make ends meet.

At the acting school, Sokolova met her first love - student Georgy Arapovsky. They got married in May 1941 and were incredibly happy together. At the same time, Lyuba was offered her first role in cinema, in the film “Frontline Friends”. Chaste and correct Lyubov was outraged by the behavior of screenwriter Sergei Mikhalkov, and she refused to act in film. Then it seemed to her that her whole life was ahead of her and the future was presented in the most rosy light.

War and siege of Leningrad

The happiness of a young married couple, like millions of Soviet citizens, was cut short by the war. Lyubov and her husband remained in besieged Leningrad, went to work at a factory, and turned parts for military aircraft. Lyuba worked equally with everyone else; her mother-in-law and beloved husband worked at the same plant. He was not taken to the front due to poor eyesight.

The meager rations were not enough. Gregory's mother was the first to die of hunger, then death came for her son. The husband died right in the arms of his loving wife, and her grief knew no bounds. By some miracle, Sokolova managed to survive and hold out until evacuation in 1942. She left besieged Leningrad the only way possible at that time, under bombing, on a truck on the ice of Lake Ladoga.

Having reached the mainland, Lyuba stayed for some time at the reception point, helping to bandage the wounded and care for the exhausted residents of Leningrad who had survived the journey along the Road of Life. Then Sokolova reached Ivanov, and a little later moved to Moscow.

By chance, the girl heard about the newly issued government decree. According to it, Leningraders evacuated from the besieged city had benefits when entering Moscow universities. Sokolova went to an appointment with the Minister of Cinematography and asked to be accepted into VGIK. She was immediately enrolled in the second year. During the war, the institute was evacuated to Alma-Ata, and the newly minted student of the acting department moved to Kazakhstan.

Sokolova studied with legendary masters: Boris Bibikov and Olga Pyzhova. While studying, playing in student plays, she attended the Moscow Art Theater, watched dramas and comedies performed by leading actresses and thought that she herself would have played better.

Lyubov Sokolova in her youth

In her youth, Lyubov Sergeevna was very beautiful, and this is clearly visible in her old photos. Her male colleagues, as well as the audience, were strongly impressed by her expressive eyes, luxurious hair, and regular facial features.

However, the actress devoted herself entirely to study, and then to work. Her entire personal life took place in public, on stage, and there was no place for the opposite sex in her; The pain of loss and longing for the deceased spouse was still too strong.

Theater career

In 1946, Lyubov Sokolova graduated with honors from VGIK and came to the Film Actor Studio Theater. In total, the artist worked in this theater her entire life, not counting her roles in cinema and the few years she spent performing in Germany in front of Soviet soldiers.

Having starred in several films, in 1951 the actress received an offer to work at the Theater of the Group of Soviet Forces. The theater troupe constantly toured Germany, traveling to numerous Soviet military garrisons located after the war on the territory of the GDR. The drama theater was based in Potsdam.

Lyubov Sergeevna agreed without hesitation, and lived and worked abroad for five whole years. Over the years, she has played dozens of roles in various performances.

Returning to Moscow in 1956, the artist entered the newly opened Theater-Studio of Film Actors. And yet, Lyubov Sokolova was destined to become the most sought-after and most popular film actress, while the theater took a back seat in her life.

Lyudmila Sokolova now

In 2020, Lyudmila Sokolova recorded the tracks “Heart Like Glass” and “I Will Be for You,” which were included in the rotation of music channels.

In the summer of 2020, the singer presented a new composition, “Lyuda Wants to Enter,” which was broadcast both on Russian radio channels and on channels in the post-Soviet space. Soon Sokolova recorded a video clip for this song, which gained popularity on social networks.

Lyudmila Sokolova’s songs “Heart Like Glass” and “Lyuda Wants to Enter” were included in the “Summer SuperMegaHit” collection, available for downloading on online music services iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play and others.

Movies

The first film in which Lyubov Sokolova starred was released before she left for Germany. In 1948, the actress was invited to play the role of nurse Varvara in the film “The Tale of a Real Man.” The girl’s partner in the film was the famous Pavel Kadochnikov, who played Meresyev. However, the famous film did not bring Sokolova either fame or even the slightest fee: she still barely made ends meet and lived in the theater dressing room.

After that, the artist’s filmography included two more films, where Lyubov Sergeevna performed episodic roles. After returning from Germany, Sokolova began to be increasingly invited to filming. She was an unsurpassed supporting actress, although she would probably have played the title roles no worse than other artists.

In the 50s, Sokolova starred in the films “Two Lives”, “The Ulyanov Family”, “Quiet Don”, “The Night Guest”, “Walking Through Torment”. On the set of the last film, she met director Georgy Danelia, who became her new love for 26 long years.

The films in which the actress played were varied, including dramas and comedies, melodramas and classical plays. With age, Sokolova gradually developed the role of a middle-aged woman, kind, sincere and sympathetic, which she really was.

Almost all the directors in whose films Lyubov Sergeevna starred saw her in the image of the mother of the main characters and heroines. She even acquired the humorous and very tender nickname “national mother.”

The actress herself sincerely rejoiced in her minor roles, considering them no less important than the title characters. She truly was the queen of the episode, her heroines set off the central characters, giving completeness and integrity to the plot, realism and depth to life situations. Lyubov Sergeevna did not act, but lived someone else’s life on the screen, putting her soul into every image.

It is characteristic that the actress never took on the role of a negative character, with one exception. In the drama “The Only One,” Lyubov Sokolova played a mother who tried to separate her own son from his wife. She considered it her duty to bring goodness and love to people, because there is nothing more important and valuable in the world.

Show "The Voice"

In 2014, Lyudmila Sokolova decided to participate in the 3rd season of the show “The Voice”. The first appearance on the stage of the project during blind auditions with the sensual and deep song “Falling into the Sky” charmed all the star mentors of the project. Absolutely everyone turned to her, but Lyudmila Sokolova chose the unrivaled Leonid Agutin, who was closest to her work.

Having performed first in the 4th episode of the 3rd season of “The Voice,” Sokolova, without a doubt, was the brightest in the episode. But this is precisely what provoked a flurry of criticism on the Internet against her. After all, initially it’s not professionals who come to “The Voice,” but those who just want to learn how to be one. But, despite this, a girl with a chic figure and beautiful eyes won the hearts and souls of many fans who were waiting for her new compositions under the strict guidance of Leonid Agutin.

The duel between Lyudmila Sokolova and Sevil Velieva is one of the brightest moments of the 7th episode of the 3rd season of “The Voice”. The girls gracefully sang the song “If You Hear” by Polina Griffis. Leonid Agutin, relying on knowledge and experience, gave his preference to Lyudmila. But here Bilan, whom Sevil’s voice touched to the core, exercised his right and left Sevil in the show, who will now fight for victory on his team.

The “Knockouts” stage presented Lyudmila Sokolova with two strong opponents - Arthur Best and Sofia Rubina-Hunter. Sokolova performed the composition “Tu Mi Manchi Amore Mio” by Laura Pausini. The mentors noted that this performance was solid and strong.

Agutin also had this opinion, sending Sokolova and Best to the quarterfinals.

In the first quarterfinal of “The Voice,” in which only one of the three participants will advance to the semifinals, Leonid Agutin pitted the titans of his team against each other—Lyudmila Sokolova, Georgy Yufa and Mariam Merabova took the stage. Having given George and Mariam English compositions, the mentor decided to prove to the audience that Lyudmila Sokolova, despite her role, sings Russian-language songs perfectly.

In the first live broadcast, Lyudmila Sokolova performed the song “You Are Here” from the repertoire of Diana Gurtskaya. According to Agutin, Sokolova coped with the task even better than at rehearsals. The mentor distributed his 100% as follows: Georgy Yufa -30%, Lyudmila Sokolova - 20%, Mariam Merabova - 50%. Viewers put Sokolova in second place, giving her 38.2%. However, Lyudmila failed to beat the audience’s favorite Merabova, and she left the “Voice” show.

Perhaps it is the “Voice” project that will help open new dimensions in the work of Lyudmila Sokolova, who at 42 years old has achieved incredible heights thanks to her love of music, and her education as a foreign language teacher helps her attract the attention of not only connoisseurs of Russian-language compositions.

Also in 2014, Lyudmila became a participant in another music television show, “Live Sound,” and also participated in the season of “Clash of the Titans.” Also during this period, the singer presented the song “I Know”.

In 2020, the singer took part in another television project - the transformation show “Just the Same”

. In the same year, Lyudmila Sokolova recorded the song “Girl in White”, and also released two compositions “Hello” and “I’m here”, which she sang in a duet with Yuri Smyslov.

Personal life

If in cinema Lyubov Sokolova expected success and universal recognition, the love of viewers and directors, friendship and respect from colleagues, then the personal fate of the actress was very difficult. The death of her first husband plunged the young woman into deep despondency; for many years she yearned for her husband who died during the siege and did not even look at other men.

Lyubov Sokolova and Georgy Danelia

The young director Georgy Danelia, who cast her in several of his films, managed to awaken love and tenderness in the actress. He courted him very persistently, even going to the lengths of deception, convincing Lyubov Sergeevna that they were the same age, since she would not date a man younger than her.

The acting family of Lyubov and Georgy seemed very strong, although they never got married, but in reality everything was not so smooth. At first, Lyuba was really happy, Georgy surrounded her with attention, she moved to his apartment on Chistye Prudy, and immediately became friends with her mother-in-law, the famous screenwriter and director, Mary Andzhaparidze.

Lyubov Sergeevna was busy around the house, constantly washing, washing, baking, and her kind and sympathetic character helped her find a common language with her new relatives. A year later, in 1959, the couple had a son, Nikolai. Lyubov Sergeevna was very worried, the birth was not easy, and the young mother was already 38 years old. Fortunately, everything went well.

Years later, the actress admitted that over time, family life became simply unbearable. Georgy Danelia, a creative and enthusiastic person, more than once left home for a long time, drank, and had women on his side.

His affair with the writer Victoria Tokareva was discussed throughout Moscow, and Lyuba just sobbed into her pillow and forgave everything. When George became seriously ill, even falling into a coma, his faithful wife looked after him without leaving his sick bed.

The last straw was the director's relationship with his new passion, Galina Yurkova. After 26 years of marriage, Danelia told his wife that he fell in love with another woman and they needed to leave. Lyubov Sergeevna packed her things and moved to her apartment, to her old mother.

The next tragedy finally crippled the actress. Son Nikolai showed great promise. Despite his early marriage (he married a classmate at the age of 17) and the birth of his daughter, Nikolai successfully graduated from the institute with a degree in directing. His works were praised by leading critics, screenwriters, and directors. However, in the 80s, the son of Sokolova and Danelia became interested in Baptistism, joined some sect and stopped communicating with his family.

In 1985, Nikolai died under unclear circumstances at the age of 26. The cause of death of the actress’s son, whose body was found in one of the Moscow apartments, has never been established.

Nine years later, Sokolova’s best friend, Maya Bulgakova, died. The artists were being driven to a concert, and the car crashed into a pole. Lyubov Sergeevna ended up in intensive care, but soon recovered, and Bulgakova died a few days after the car accident.

The list of films in which Lyubov Sergeevna starred can take several pages, because there are just under four hundred of them. But the leading roles can be counted on one hand:
