13 years later: what the main characters of the series “Lost” began to look like

Biography

When movie fans hear the name Matthew Fox, the first thing they think of is one of the most expensive and popular cult shows - the television series Lost. The series owes much of its success to its cleverly twisted plot and the correct selection of the cast. The image of the charismatic team leader was embodied by Matthew Fox. His character should have died in the pilot episode. But either the producers liked the story of the handsome and strong doctor, or the actor’s personal qualities played a role, and as a result, filming lasted for six years.

Chain of failures

Fox first established himself as a bona fide television star with roles such as Charlie Salinger and Jack Shepard. After that, he tried several minor roles in films that failed and Fox lost his place in the film business.

In the film adaptation of James Patterson's novel Alex Cross, Fox played the supervillain Picasso, who tortured and mutilated people for athletic performance. Despite the conviction with which Fox played the role, the film was completely destroyed by critics and ignored by audiences. His next role in the epic World War Z was supposed to be something completely new, but when a large chunk of the script was cut, much of Foxx's role was left in the cut.

Childhood and youth

Matthew Chandler Fox is from Abington, Pennsylvania, where he was born on July 14, 1966. His mother Loretta, of Italian descent, worked as a school teacher, and his father Francis worked as a consultant for an oil company. Matthew spent his childhood away from big cities, on a farm in Crowheart. Here the family started raising livestock and growing barley.

Actor Matthew Fox

After graduation, Fox's biography included Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts and Columbia University. There, Matthew studied economics. Perhaps a career awaited him on Wall Street. But the mother of one of his friends worked in a modeling agency. With the agent's trained eye, the woman noted the student's textured appearance and offered to star in the commercial. Matthew liked the process, but he still received a diploma in economics.

For two years, Fox worked part-time as a fashion model and at the same time studied acting courses in New York. Then he moved to the world capital of entertainment and the film industry, Los Angeles.

The beginning of an acting career

One day, his girlfriend’s mother, who worked as a modeling agent, advised young Matthew to try himself as an actor. Thanks to his outstanding appearance, he easily gets a role in advertising. This became a turning point in the life of the future star.

He drops out of university and enters film and television school in New York. After studying for two years, Matthew Fox quits this business and moves to Los Angeles. During his studies, the actor works part-time as a model, periodically appearing in episodic roles. So, he starred in one episode of the series “Wings”.

And thanks to the film “My Boyfriend Is Risen,” Fox became famous in some circles, which allowed him to increase the pace of his career growth. The young talent was noticed by the directors of such series as “There Are Five of Us” and “Ghost Whisperer.”

Movies

In Hollywood, endless visits to castings, refusals from directors and lack of money followed. At some point, Fox even decided to forget about cinema and continue the family farming business.

Matthew managed to come into contact with the world of cinema in 1992 in a small episode in the TV series “Wings”. The project in which the actor loudly announced himself was the kind and optimistic show “There Are Five of Us” with Scott Wolf and Neve Campbell. The series lasted six seasons and received a Golden Globe.

In 1993, Matthew Fox already got the main role in the film “The Guy from the Other World,” which combined melodrama and horror film. In the same year, Fox appeared in the cast of the teenage series “School Holiday Special.” The film also stars Joanna Cassidy, Keanu Reeves, Jason Scott Lee, and Patricia Arquette.

In 2002, the main role in the mystical series “Ghost Whisperer” followed. The main character is an unusual policeman. Frank Taylor is helped to successfully solve crimes by a special gift - communication with the world of the dead. The ghosts want to punish their offenders and give the policeman the necessary clues. At first, Fox didn’t like the script, and the actor agreed to act only because of the fee.

Matthew Fox in the TV series Ghost Whisperer

In 2004, Fox again encountered mysticism and mystery. The actor was invited to play a role in the series “Lost” (“Lost”) directed by JJ Abrams. Moreover, Matthew’s wife forced him to call the director back.

Fox liked the "bad guy" Sawyer. Matthew believed that the character was very similar to himself, with a frantic temperament and a lover of provoking others. But the role went to Josh Holloway.

Dr. Jack Shepard was to be played by Michael Keaton. But he rejected the offer, since the character, according to the director’s plan, did not live long. Matthew had nothing to lose, and besides, the fee for two weeks of filming amounted to 70 thousand dollars.

Fox’s tattoos, which the actor began doing in his youth, also fit into the doctor’s image. At first they were disguised, but then the directors decided that the tattoos conveyed Shepard’s inner world well.

As Fox later admitted in an interview, he could not have imagined that Lost would turn out the way it did. Impressed by Matthew's performance, the directors changed the script, and the series was broadcast from 2004 to 2010.

“Lost” elevated the actors who starred in it to the rank of stars. Including Matthew Fox. In addition, Fox is one of the highest paid serial artists: for one episode in the fifth season his fee was $225 thousand.

Matthew Fox in the movie We Are One Team

Simultaneously with the main film in his career, Fox expanded his filmography with the drama We Are One Team, where he appeared together with the namesake - Matthew McConaughey, the dramatic action film by Joe Carnahan Smokin' Aces, and the adventure adaptation of the anime Speed Racer. In 2008, Fox participated in the dubbing of the computer game Speed Racer. After finishing filming the six-year series, he took a year off to devote time to his family.

Matthew returned to screens as the homicidal maniac “The Butcher” Sullivan in the 2012 thriller I, Alex Cross. Fox finally got the long-awaited negative role. Fox owes his excellent physical shape in the film to his wife, who put her husband on a vegetable diet, and to hard training under the guidance of Simon Waterson. The film did not excite the audience, and the box office did not even cover the $35 million budget spent on filming.

Matthew Fox in the movie "I, Alex Cross"

The same year, Matthew Fox played the role of General Bonner Fellers in Peter Webber's historical drama The Emperor. The film told about the events that took place after the surrender of Japan in World War II. Fox's hero faces the question of whether to consider the emperor a war criminal.

In 2013, Fox starred with Brad Pitt in the post-apocalyptic action film World War Z. The film was shot in Malta, Hungary, Scotland, Russia, and was used as the opening film of the Moscow International Film Festival. Due to the peculiarities of the plot, despite the fact that the script was later rewritten, the film was banned from showing in China.

Matthew Fox in the movie Extinction

Among the actor’s latest works on the set is another post-apocalyptic film and a western. In the first, called "Extinction" (or "Welcome to Harmony"), Fox embodies the character of one of two friends - Patrick. Humanity has fallen victim to the virus and is morally degrading. Patrick and neighbor Jack will have to forget old grievances and unite in the fight against monsters.

The second film - "Bone Tomahawk" - combines a Western and a horror film with cannibals, streams of blood and a lot of corpses familiar to the genre. The cast of the film includes Patrick Wilson, Kurt Russell, Richard Jenkins. Both films were released in 2020.

Matthew Fox: “I want to return to Russia!”

Matthew flew to Geneva for the IWC evening as part of the annual watch exhibition SIHH with his beloved wife. The actor has been dating Margherita since 1991; they met at university and have hardly been apart since then. Margherita Ronchi is an Italian who managed to maintain her marriage to a Hollywood handsome man even after he starred in Lost and became very popular. Their love is constantly discussed by leading American tabloids, because reporters do not understand how such a strong and sincere union is possible in Hollywood. The actor himself explains this by the fact that he and his wife rarely communicate with people from the film crowd - only for work and only in cases of emergency. By the way, the actor’s mother, Loretta, is also half Italian, so Matthew understands his wife very well, even when she is overly emotional and “even when she talks too much.”

At the university, the future Hollywood macho studied... economics, and quite successfully. In our conversation, Matthew mentioned a couple of times that during the economic crisis he thanked God for changing his profession at the right time. And in the early 90s, Fox first tried his hand at television; he even played in The Three Musketeers. True, none of his subsequent works made the proper impression on professionals, but this did not bother fans of the charming actor.

Already in 1996, People magazine included Fox in the list of the most beautiful people of the year, and many producers choose stars for their projects based on this list. The role of Dr. Jack in the TV series Lost made Matthew a superstar, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination and an award from film critics at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. On the one hand, after the famous series, he received offers from major film studios: together with Matthew McConaughey, he played in the film “We Are One Team”, appeared in the film “Smokin’ Aces”, in the thriller “Point of Fire”... On the other hand, Matthew is still not perceived separately from his most stellar role - Dr. Jack. It is unclear whether he will be able to overcome this situation.

In one of his last interviews, the actor even stated that he was stopping acting in TV series and now accepts scripts only if it is a project of a major film company. The offer from IWC and the famous photographer Peter Lindbergh turned out to be all the more pleasant for him. Together with Cate Blanchett, Kevin Spacey, Zinedine Zidane and Elle Macpherson, Matthew and his wife went to Portofino, where they participated in a black and white photo shoot dedicated to the launch of the new Portofino watch collection.

Matthew, how was filming? Surely you all had fun together, and even in Italy?

These were wonderful days, considering that the filming took place in the homeland of my wife Margherita... It is a confirmation of a certain status when you are called to a project with Kate and Kevin, so I took it as a big compliment.

I heard that recently you have fallen in love with taking photographs yourself. What's better than starting under Lindbergh himself?

Can't put it into words! I constantly caught myself thinking that all the other participants, like normal people, were looking into Lindbergh’s camera, and I was looking behind the camera, at him. Peter constantly called out to me and thereby brought me to my senses. (Smiles.)

What is Lindbergh's secret, have you figured it out?

Didn't even try. But I know one thing: he is so easy to communicate with, so modest, despite all his merits and status, that you instantly understand that in front of you is a genius. He’s not trying to prove anything, he’s not trying to film something strange so that only he can understand it. Peter shoots it as if it was simple, but it turns out very cool. It rained non-stop for a couple of days, everyone walked around under huge umbrellas, and for Lindbergh it was like the sun was shining alone - he doesn’t notice anything around him when he looks into his favorite camera.

One of the advantages of your profession, undoubtedly, is that you travel and constantly meet new people. Is it possible to get tired of such a life?

I haven't been living this life long enough to get tired and start complaining. But sometimes you really find yourself in one city, and tomorrow in another, and this happens all the time, at some point your head stops working. This is what happened to me in Moscow. I flew to the premiere, and in the evening I boarded the plane again! I didn’t have time to go to the Kremlin, I didn’t even see Red Square. You feel stupid: you flew so far, visited a country that is terribly interesting to you, and you are ashamed to admit to your friends that you only saw a hotel there...

This means that you must definitely return to Moscow.

This is in my plans, honestly. By the way, don't you play chess? I always wanted to fight the Russians, I'm a big fan of this game.

Meryl Streep and Don Gummer

The story of the beginning of the relationship between Meryl and Don is quite unusual. Streep was on the verge of depression after the death of her lover, actor John Cazale. To change the situation, Meryl's brother settled her in the house of his friend, sculptor Don Gummer. Of course, in his absence. When Don returned home, he was in no hurry to kick Meryl out, knowing that she had suffered such mental trauma. So they lived together, and their friendly relationship gradually grew into something more. After some time, the lovers got married. The couple has been together for 38 years and they have 4 children. “I don’t even know what I would do without my husband. I would be dead, at least emotionally, if I hadn't met him. He's the best," says Streep. However, she admitted: “I never had crazy love for Don. But he had one for me. Don once said that he couldn’t live without me and asked me to marry him.”

Another happy story of Cinderella, which began in 1974. At the time, Jeff Bridges was filming the film Rancho Deluxe. Filming took place on a real ranch in Montana, in the fresh air, the weather was beautiful, and during breaks the group had lunch right on the street. Once again at lunch, Jeff noticed one of the waitresses and became very interested in her. As it later turned out, a girl named Susan at that time was trying to make a career as a photographer and was temporarily working as a waitress. Without thinking twice, Bridges invited Susan to dinner. Three years later they got married. The couple have been together for 39 years and have 3 daughters. "I love her very much. Our relationship every year, you won’t believe it, only gets better and closer. And we don’t make any effort for this,” Bridges recently admitted.
