Nikita Volkov was brought up in a simple family with no connection to the world of art or cinema.
Since childhood, he dreamed of becoming an artist and attended a choreographic studio. Volkov was a professional swimmer for some time, but did not want to connect his life with sports. At the same time, the guy studied foreign languages: French and English.

Having received a matriculation certificate, Nikita entered a theater university on the first try. The choice was made at the State Academy of Theater Arts. The future actor was enrolled in the workshop of Anna Aleksakhina. On the set of “Two Women” he was lucky enough to work with such artists as: Anna Vartanyan, Alexander Baluev, Anna Levanova, Sergei Yushkevich.

In the same year, Volkov starred in the film “Incandescent Perimeter” directed by Igor Drak. In the 4-episode action film, the actor received one of the main roles - paratrooper Andrei, who with his colleague Igor came to relax at sea in a small seaside town. Nikita Volkov: “I dream that my mother will be healthy and not need anything”

After the main role in the film adaptation of Sergei Lukyanenko’s novel “Draft,” people started talking about Nikita Volkov as a promising young artist. Although by this time he already had quite noticeable projects under his belt.

— Not so long ago, the fantasy drama “Draft” was released with you in the title role, soon the premiere of “Vocal-Criminal Ensemble” will take place on the NTV channel, and in general there is an enviable genre diversity in your filmography. Do you choose projects this way specifically?

“I wouldn’t want to become a hostage to any one genre—to act, for example, only in psychological dramas and constantly suffer on screen. Or only in sitcoms. I have nothing against either genre, but such constancy is not interesting to me. An actor must try himself in different ways in order to grow and develop. This is a truism. I don’t want to find myself in the position of an actor who considers himself in demand because he receives offers one after another, but if you ask what kind of roles he played in a year, it turns out that they all look the same, you can’t tell them apart. This is probably profitable and suits some people quite well. But not me.

— You’ve been in cinema for several years now, but people started talking about you seriously only after “Draft.” How did you get involved in this project?

— I was invited to a meeting with director Sergei Mokritsky. We started talking, and at first for some reason I tried to seem better than I actually was. But in time I realized that this never works, and became myself: I shared some thoughts, told how I lived, what worries me, what I dream about. Apparently, this is exactly what the director expected from me, because he called me for auditions, and after them they approved me.

— What dream did you share with him, if it’s not a secret?

“I wanted, and still want, for my mother to not need anything and to be healthy.

— They said that if “Draft” was successful, a sequel called “Chistovik” would await us. Were there any such plans?

— Sergei Lukyanenko has a novel with the same name, but the producers did not let me in on their plans. But if they still decide to film the “Clean Draft,” we will take into account the mistakes made in the “Draft” and rewrite everything completely in the best possible way. (Laughs.)

— How do you feel about the writer Sergei Lukyanenko?

— I can’t say that I’m his fan, but I read it with interest.

-Have you met him? Was he on the set?

“I even played a small episode in the film.” I told him that I was offered the main role in the film adaptation of another of his novels, but I replied that this was impossible because I was already busy with “Draft.” Imagine Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man, being cast as Captain America. Now I’m not comparing the scale with Downey Jr., I’m talking about the principle itself.

— It seems that Lukyanenko said that fans of the book would not accept this film adaptation, because the director did not touch upon the main theme of the novel...

“I haven’t heard such a statement, but I myself think differently.” The author sees and understands his novel one way, but the director sees it differently, he has his own vision, and he has the right to it. But flirting with fans, becoming dependent on their opinions, trying to please them is generally the wrong path. Fans, even numerous ones, are still a rather modest part of the audience, which includes millions of people. It's impossible to please everyone. For some reason, it is believed that fans understand more than the filmmakers and other viewers that their opinion is more important. But that's not true. Everyone is equal in the cinema, and you need to come there with an open mind, and not with prejudice. At the same time, I myself am a fan of comics, I constantly watch films about superheroes. Then my friends and I discuss them. Sometimes you think: why all these changes? Was it really impossible to take the plot of a comic book and simply transfer it to the screen? But then you understand: why then? What is the point of such a duplicate?

— I hope you don’t only read comics? Which writers do you like?

— You are absolutely right, I don’t only read comics. Like you, probably. Girls can like me, and if you are interested in my literary preferences, they are very different: Dostoevsky, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Bradbury.

— You had the opportunity to work on camera with Irina Khakamada. What are your impressions of a politician as an actress?

— I heard a lot about Khakamada, saw her on TV. I can’t say that we had a lot of time to talk, but communication with her amazed me. A very unusual person. It’s a pity that I don’t have time to take her courses yet: it’s sure to be interesting.

— Evgeniy Tsyganov, Andrey Merzlikin, and Yulia Peresild starred with you in “Draft.” Have you received any professional advice from the stars?

— We practically did not communicate with Tsyganov. He is a private person. Yulia Peresild tactfully suggested something to me, but most importantly, she predicted the near future. It's a secret, I won't tell you. But the prediction was positive, and Julia looked into the water.

— In general, is a partner important? What is your attitude towards your partner?

— A partner is extremely important, and my attitude is appropriate. If you don't respect your partner, why are you going on set? Then work alone, play in one-man shows. I always listen to my partner. At the same time, I can disagree, argue, and offer my own. It’s just that Yuri Nikolaevich Butusov taught us this: reject, but offer.

— Do you also argue with the director, do you offer your own? Or do you submit to his will?

— The director is no exception. I am the kind of person who can only understand something in an argument. Even if I feel like I’m wrong, I sometimes need to provoke a small conflict in order to understand how much the director values his idea and how easily he can abandon it. I will offer my three options in response, a dialogue will begin, and together we will come to the right decision. People who are sure that only they know how to do it scare me. No one knows. You need to break stereotypes, push yourself out of your comfort zone. These are banal things, but true. An artist is not clay, he is a co-author. This is the first thing they will ask him: why did you star in such garbage? And only then will it come to the director, cameraman, producer. The viewer looks at the artist, and he is obliged to take a responsible approach to what he does. I mean taking your work seriously, not yourself. You need to treat yourself with a certain amount of self-irony, this is mandatory.

— Do you continue to play at the Lensoveta Theater? If filming another film disrupts the theater's plans, will you be able to refuse the stage?

— I have a difficult situation, because my master left the theater. Now I’m playing three performances there, but it’s not the same theater I came to a few years ago. For myself, I don’t want this choice: cinema or theater. I try to combine one with the other, and so far it’s working.

— How do you relax after difficult filming and performances? Or don't you need it?

— Like all ordinary people, I enjoy spending time with friends. None of them have anything to do with theater or cinema. Guys have completely different professions. We play football or sit, drink, chat. We tell each other what’s going on in each other’s lives.

— Do you have any hobbies besides cinema, theater and comics?

— These comics were given to you. In winter I started snowboarding. Completely delighted, I will continue to master it. I play football, I already said that. Computer games are long gone.
