If you look from the outside, being a star should be very interesting and cool.
The acting profession, it would seem, is truly created for narcissistic people, because you can delight the crowd, be a trendsetter and fashion trendsetter, and secretly force others to imitate and follow you. Actually, this is what the owners of large corporations take advantage of, promoting their ideas and products through the “brand” of public people. Contrary to the prevailing opinion that all actors are vain and “bathe” in popularity, some representatives of Hollywood shun public life and try to protect personal and family relationships from the “long nose” of the paparazzi and journalists. Of course, they appreciate the commitment of their fans and are happy to give them their creativity, but they do not let them get closer to themselves than necessary.
Let's look at 10 Hollywood stars who have become known as real recluses, trying to avoid increased attention from the press and fans.
10Michelle Williams
The actress does not occupy the attention of the public - the star of popular art-house films has been nominated for an Oscar four times. The girl 10 years ago lost her common-law husband and her daughter’s father, the popular actor Heath Ledger. Since then, Williams has done everything to attract as little attention from journalists as possible. She tries to hide her personal life and does not expose it to the public. Of course, such isolation cannot but affect the actress’s career, since any PR is important for a star and allows her to stir up the interest of the public, as well as get roles in truly large-scale projects.
Top 10 brightest stars
Back in the 2nd century BC. The ancient Greek astronomer Hipparchus divided all stars into six magnitudes. He called the brightest stars of the first magnitude (hence, by the way, the famous catchphrase came from), the dimmest stars of the sixth magnitude, and the rest were evenly distributed among intermediate magnitudes. Much later, the brightness of stars was measured, formulas were derived, and patterns were determined. Vega was taken as the starting point on the stellar scale, whose brightness was equated to zero magnitude. If the star is dimmer than Vega, its magnitude is positive; if brighter, its magnitude is negative.
So, we rank the stars by apparent magnitude, or brightness. Not to be confused with luminosity, luminosity is the total energy emitted by an astronomical object per unit time. Luminosity, unlike apparent magnitude, does not depend on the distance to the object.
10. Betelgeuse
In Ancient Greece, in the constellation Orion, a hunter named Orion was seen, who died either from the arrows of the goddess Artemis, or from the bite of a scorpion. Alpha Orionis is the red supergiant Betelgeuse, which in Arabic means something like the shoulder or armpit of a giant. The shoulder is truly gigantic: it is one of the largest stars known to astronomers. If Betelgeuse were placed in the place of the Sun, then at its minimum size it would fill the orbit of Mars, and at its maximum it would reach the orbit of Jupiter. Betelgeuse is a variable star, with a noticeable periodicity in brightness changes - from 0.2 to 1.2 . It shines much brighter than the Sun: the minimum luminosity of Betelgeuse is 80 thousand times greater than the luminosity of the Sun. But it is located far away: according to various estimates, from 495 to 640 light years. It cannot be compared with our daylight: it is located 8.31 light minutes from Earth.
9. Achernar
Translated from Arabic, Achernar means “end of the river.” The mythological river is called Eridanus, and is often considered the earth's Po or Nile river. The brightest star in the constellation Eridanus has an apparent magnitude of 0.5 , which puts it in ninth place in the sky. Achernar is about seven times heavier than the Sun and many times greater in luminosity. This bright blue star rotates so fast that it is flattened: Eridani's equatorial diameter is one and a half times larger than its polar diameter.
8. Procyon
The brightest star in the constellation Canis Minor is Procyon: its magnitude is 0.4 . Both the ancient Greeks and Egyptians long ago noticed that Procyon rises shortly before Sirius. The Egyptians always looked forward to these stars: they foreshadowed the imminent flooding of the Nile. Since Sirius, as we will soon find out, was called the “Dog Star,” then Procyon is the “predecessor of the dog,” if translated from Greek. Like Sirius, Procyon is also a double star: Procyon A is classified as a subgiant, Procyon B is a white dwarf. Some 11 or so light years separate Procyon from Earth - it is one of the closest stars to our planet.
7. Rigel
The blue-white supergiant Rigel with a magnitude of 0.12 is “leg” translated from Arabic to the same giant Orion. The rest of Rigel's indices are also colossal: Beta Orionis is 74 times larger than the Sun and exceeds its luminosity by about 130,000 times. Even discreet encyclopedias call Rigel the most powerful of the brightest stars in the sky. With such size and power, Rigel is changeable - its gloss ranges from 0.03 to 0.3. And he’s not alone - there are three stars in the Rigel system. And he is not offended - he obediently conceded the title of Alpha Orion to the less bright Betelgeuse.
6. Capella Star Capella does not sing, and even its name itself comes from another Latin word. Alpha Auriga is translated from Latin as “goat”: the Greeks and Romans saw her as the goat Amalthea or Amalthea, who suckled Zeus-Jupiter. This is the same goat whose horn turned into a cornucopia. Wow, the celestial goat is a yellow giant with an apparent magnitude of 0.08 ! Capella is also variable, which is why there is confusion in ratings, and it is also double: two stars with a luminosity tens of times greater than the Sun each, are one hundred million kilometers apart from each other, that is, 2/3 of the distance from the Earth to the Sun, and rotate with a period 104 days. If you meet a “shepherd star” in English literature, don’t be alarmed: it’s her, our friend Capella.
5. Vega
Meet zero. Or rather, it was taken as zero for a very long time. Astronomers took Vega from the constellation Lyra as the starting point on the scale of stellar magnitudes. Today its brightness is 0.03 , but astronomers continue to argue about whether Vega is a variable or not. Although Vega has been studied quite well, perhaps better than any other star. One of the vertices of the large summer triangle (the other two are Deneb and Altair) rotates around its axis like a top - it makes a full rotation in 12.5 hours. In its name they saw an approximate transliteration of the word wagi, that is, falling from a complex Arabic phrase meaning “falling eagle” or “falling vulture”: the constellation Lyra seemed to the Arabs like a diving bird of prey. In the famous atlas Uranometria, Vega is depicted in the beak of an eagle holding a lyre.
4. Arcturus
Well, we're in the red! Ursa Guardian has an apparent magnitude of -0.05. The Greeks called Alpha Bootes the guardian of the bear, that is, Arcturus. This heavenly-mythological riddle is deciphered as follows: Arcturus is the son of Zeus Arkad, sent to heaven by his father to guard his mother, the nymph Callisto, transformed into the Big Dipper. The red giant Arcturus is quite close, by cosmic standards, to Earth - some 36.7 light years. It is no wonder to find a bright star in the sky: from the territory of Russia, Arcturus is visible all year round, you just need to draw an arc through the three stars of the handle of the Ursa Major. It was said - a guard!
3. Proxima Centauri
Various quizzes and popular books have completely confused viewers and readers: which is closer to the solar system: Alpha Centauri or Proxima, that is, translated from Latin as “closest,” Centauri? So, the red dwarf Proxima Centauri is part of the Alpha Centauri star system. And all this together is a bronze medalist for the night sky in terms of brilliance with a result of -0.27 . And the centaur is the same centaur, only it came from Latin. There are countless books, films and computer toys in which Alpha Centauri appears - the star system closest to us has long attracted science fiction writers and fans of interstellar contacts.
2. Canopus
Among the 48 constellations in the atlas of Claudius Ptolemy was the Ship Argo. In the middle of the 18th century it was divided into parts Kiel, Stern, Parus. It is symbolic that Alpha Carinae became a guiding star for other ships. And these ships are spacecraft: Canopus is used in astrocorrection systems, starting with the first Soviet automatic interplanetary stations. A yellowish-white supergiant star with a magnitude of -0.72 is visible in the sky from areas south of Athens. The luminosity of Canopus is about 14,000 solar. This is the greatest luminosity of all stars located within a radius of 700 light years from the Sun.
1. Sirius
Unlike Canopus, Sirius has a luminosity only 22 times higher than that of the Sun. But it is many times closer to us - 8.6 light years, instead of 310 at Canopus. And so it turned out that Sirius is the champion, its apparent magnitude is as much as -1.47 , which is entirely consistent with the name: translated from Greek “bright” or “brilliant”. Alpha Canis Majoris has been called the “dog star” since ancient times: according to Greek mythology, the star Sirius was a dog - either the hunter Orion, or the winemaker Icarius. The Romans called Sirius "Canicula", that is, a small dog. The appearance of Sirius in the rays of dawn - and this happened in July - foreshadowed the onset of intense heat for the Romans. Field work ceased, the nobility dispersed to country villas. The dies caniculares - “dog days” - were approaching, that is, in our language, the holidays. This is where the English idiom “dog days” comes from, that is, intense heat. It’s funny: it’s bitterly cold here.
9Daniel Craig
The actor is recognized by everyone thanks to his epic role as James Bond in a whole series of films. It’s impossible to say that Craig liked popularity and everyone’s attention. He loves to work, get used to a new role, do his job efficiently and even please the audience, but the intrusiveness of the paparazzi and crazy fans will tire anyone. Daniel also protects his family life from the sharp gaze of society. He is proud that with great effort he was able to keep his wedding with the popular actress Rachel Weisz, which took place 7 years ago, a secret from the public. Everyone learned about the star marriage after some time, which gave the newlyweds the opportunity to enjoy each other without unnecessary fuss.
Chapel (α Auriga)
This is the sixth object from our star rating. In the Northern Hemisphere it is the third most luminous. Visually, the Capella is located on the shoulder of the charioteer figure from the constellation of the same name. In astronomical atlases it is called Alpha Aurigae. What makes it unusual is that Capella is also a double star. The two yellow giants orbit each other at a distance of 100 million km. Their total mass exceeds the solar mass by 2.5 times.
The journey to this star would take about 42 light years.
The word Capella comes from the Greek for goat. The name is dedicated to the goat Amalthea, who suckled the main god of the Greeks, Zeus. According to legend, when Zeus accidentally broke one of his horns, he turned it into the legendary “horn of plenty.” It was magically filled with whatever the owner desired.
8Bill Murray
Bill “boycotts” the conventions of Hollywood and does not hire PR people, producers, or even a personal assistant into his team. In this regard, it is quite difficult to contact the actor and make an appointment. Although Murray himself is agitating to leave messages on his phone and come in person. From time to time, the actor can be found at home in Charleston, where he whiles away his days away from the social beau monde and bustle. If the person who invited is important or dear to Murray, then he will attend his holiday, banquet or other personal event. And so the already elderly actor tries to take the best from life, often travels and strives to meet new ordinary people.
“You can never have too many stars” TOP popular Hollywood stars of the 80s
Most recently, the new sci-fi comedy Pixels with Adam Sandler was released, a comedy that, among other things, promotes old video games from the 80s. In addition to nostalgia for the games, the film made me think about this. The eighties were a great period for the formation of many Hollywood stars. Unfortunately, many of them stopped acting, but we still remember and love their old films. I present my personal TOP stars of the 80s.
The first person I want to mention was the film actor of the early 80s, American of Canadian origin Michael J. Fox . Probably everyone remembers his best, in my opinion, role in Robert Zemeckis’ science fiction film “Back to the Future.” In the film, he played a teenager who travels from the 80s to the 50s using a time machine. The picture brought him incredible success, as they say, the next morning he woke up as a star. His other works of that time were “Teen Wolf”, “The Secret of My Success”, and he began his career, like many in Hollywood, with ordinary sitcoms (“Family Ties”, “Leo and Me”). In the early 90s, when Michael was filming another comedy hit, Dr. Hollywood, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. At first he continued to act, but in the early 2000s he stopped - the disease progressed, and it became more difficult to work out a day of filming. Now Fox can be found in the crime film series “The Good Wife”, playing, alas, a minor role. Michael deserves a place in the TOP of popular Hollywood stars of the 80s, since I believe that he is the star of a single role. The role thanks to which the film “Back to the Future” has been watched by many generations for many years.
And here is one of my favorites - Whoopi Goldberg ! It is impossible to make TOP stars of the 80s without this crazy, original, damn attractive actress. The black star at one time became a real thunderstorm in American comedies! The same thing happened to her as with the previous hero of my TOP - in one hour she woke up famous. How it all happened. The actress came up with the script for the comedy show Whoopi Goldberg, and director Michael Nichols staged it on Broadway. And then it began! Steven Spielberg invited Goldberg to star in The Color Purple, for which Whoopi received her first Oscar nomination. And then there was the film “Ghost” - the best comedy role for which Whoopi deservedly received an Oscar! A little later, in 1992, Whoopi starred in the comedy “Sister Act,” where she had to put on a nun’s clothes while hiding from her friend, a bandit in a monastery. I can still watch this movie over and over again. In addition to comedic roles, Whoopi was involved in the dramas “Ghosts of Mississippi”, “At the Bottom of the Ocean” and others, plus she became the voice of the hyena Shenzi from “The Lion King”. Goldberg recently starred in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and is a regular host of the morning show “The View” for American women. I can say that the career of an Oscar-winning actress has definitely taken off, but in her turbulent youth, Whoopi was addicted to drugs and even worked in a phone sex service. Whoopi Goldberg deserves a place in the TOP, since I believe it was she who formed the very “silly” image of American comedy films of the 80s.
Another star of the golden period is the forever young and eccentric comedian Chevy Chase . It was in the 80s that his star lit up and helped him become a mega popular Hollywood actor. Chevy played leading roles in the films Confessions of an Invisible Man, Fletch, Family Guy, Vacation, Three Amigos! and others. I especially love the family comedy “Christmas Vacation,” where Chase plays with Beverly D. Angelo and Juliet Lewis. Here, it seems, the actor played himself - the same simple, without any thoughts, Clark Grisold, trying to make the best Christmas for his family. Already in the early 90s, Chevy began to lose its popularity, and there were fewer roles. The aged Chase can be seen in Dan Harmon's comedy television series "Community" about the lives of classmates, in various episodes and television shows. I consider the career of one of the best comedians in the USA to be successful. Few people know, by the way, that Chevy Chase is the progenitor of all stand-up comedians. In 1975, New York magazine awarded Chase the title of America's funniest man. I completely agree with this decision, which is why the actor takes his place in my selection. The talented actor, with his original performance, was able to occupy a free niche in Hollywood and now he certainly cannot be confused with anyone.
Of course, my TOP stars of the 80s could not pass by the ageless, talented comedian, Danny DeVito . This actor simply makes you fall in love with himself, with his hero, and it doesn’t matter whether he’s positive or negative. We know Denny from his performance in the films “Romancing the Stone”, where his partners were Michael Douglas and the magnificent Kathleen Turner, “The Pearl of the Nile”, “Ruthless People” and other films. A-list stars became Denny's partners. Arnold Schwarzenegger played with Danny in the comedy "Twins", Billy Crystal - in the film "Throw Momma from the Train", etc. Lately, Danny DeVito has acted rarely, often in voice acting or supporting roles. The actor’s inclusion in my TOP stars of the 80s is justified simply: for all his, let’s say, unstellar appearance, he was able to achieve what actors of a higher rank dream of. Even a minor or small role of Denny in the film brings guaranteed success!
Who doesn't know the handsome Richard Gere ? Right. After the 1990 melodrama “Pretty Woman” with the well-known Julia Roberts, Richard became a real symbol of the hero-lover not only in America. Gere started on the theater stage. In 1978, he starred in the dramas Days of the Harvest and Blood Brothers, in 1979 in American Gigolo, and in 1983 in the thriller Breathless. A little later we will see Richard Gere with the magnificent Jodie Foster in the melodrama “Sommersby”, in “The Mothman”. "Chicago", etc. Richard Gere has starred in about 60 films, not counting production work and episodes where the actor plays himself. Gere is still acting, although understandably not as actively. A new film is coming, “Oppenheimer's Strategy with Richard in the title role. There is life in the old dog yet. In my mind, Richard left the impression of a serious actor who can play lovers and character characters at the same time, as in the film Hachiko. To be honest, it was because of this film that I put Gere in the TOP stars. This is one of my favorite pictures with his participation, don’t blame me.
The next actor takes a well-deserved place in the TOP stars of the 80s - the famous American comedian Eddie Murphy . I believe that Eddie became the founder, like his colleague, Whoopi Goldberg, of a special series of “silly” Hollywood comedies with black humor. I hope there is no need to introduce his films. I will only mention my favorite comedy with his participation - “Beverly Hills Cop” 1984. Murphy played tough cop Alex Foley, who hunts down his best friend's killers. It is noteworthy that Sylvester Stallone auditioned for this role, who at the last moment chose to play in the action movie “Cobra”. For each of them, these films became landmarks in their careers and a kind of fateful one. Of course, Eddie had his ups and downs, and he became famous thanks to the show “Saturday Night Live,” which also featured one of my TOP heroes, Chevy Chase. Despite the fact that the peak of Eddie Murphy's popularity came in the 80s, many people still enjoy watching films and laughing at the black guy's sparkling jokes.
And again the child of the American show “Saturday Night Live” is Bill Murray . The charismatic actor, winner of the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards, became famous for his excellent performances in the films Tootsie by Sydney Polak and Ghostbusters by Ivan Reitman. The last one, I must say, is a hit of the 80s. This picture is timeless, although, of course, at that time there was no need to talk about any sophisticated special effects and computer graphics. However, not every hero of modern blockbusters can compare with these permanent ghost fighters, including our Bill. The film became a landmark in his career. No less significant in the actor’s filmography is the 1993 film “Groundhog Day” by Ivan Reitman. The actor was awarded the Golden Globe award in the category “Best Actor” for his performance in the drama “Lost in Translation” by Sofia Copolla. The film is unique, marked by positive reviews from film critics, I recommend watching it. Honestly, I doubted whether to include Bill in the TOP or not. On the one hand, he really starred in high-quality, worthy films of the 80s, on the other, there are more distinguished actors who, with their performances, shaped a certain culture of the cinema of the 80s. What do you think?
Well, the last one in my TOP stars of the 80s is the real blond Steve Martin. If you ask the generation of the 90s or 2000s who Steve Martin is, everyone will at least recognize him. Indeed, a comedy starring Steve, The Wagon and the Little Trolley. They are really recognizable, you can watch them forever. Like Chevy Chase, Steve Martin began his career as a stand-up comedian. Moreover, he was the most popular in this profession in those years. It cost him nothing to gather a whole stadium of fans chanting his name. Steve Martin starred in the comedies “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” “By Planes, Trains, Automobiles,” “Father of the Bride” and others. A little later, our hero was able to bask a little more in the rays of fame, having played in the films and sequels “The Pink Panther” and “Cheaper by the Dozen” in the 2000s. Today he hardly acts in films, but it was his past achievements that became for me the very reason to include him in the rating of Hollywood stars of the 80s. I can say with confidence, for me personally, Steve Martin became a pioneer in the genre of timeless comedies with unimaginable, and sometimes stupid, characters.
There are never too many stars. Perhaps I missed someone - write. In fact, I would like to say: it does not matter at all that most of these stars no longer appear in box-office films or have simply faded into oblivion. It is important that we love and remember the Hollywood stars of that time. I cannot imagine modern cinema history without all the actors I have listed. Each of them left their mark on the history of Hollywood cinema in the 80s. Some more, some less. By the way, have you noticed one thing: before becoming actors, almost all of them went the way of variety comedians?
What do you think? Who else can you remember?
7Johnny Depp
Many fans would like to be next to Johnny, but the actor himself does not demonstrate hypocritical joy at being surrounded by fans. He admitted more than once to journalists that he does not like fame and increased attention. This was one of the important reasons why the actor moved to France with his common-law wife Vanessa Paradis for a long time. There it was easier for him to avoid meeting nosy media representatives and persistent fans. The actor also tried to appear on the street less often. Now, against his will, Depp has found himself involved in furious discussions about his personal life (divorce from Amber Heard) and financial difficulties. And this is instead of putting the creativity and talent of the actor first.
Vega (α Lyrae)
The star is located in the constellation Lyra and is the fifth brightest object on our list. Interestingly, the photograph of Vega was taken second after the Sun. Ancient astrologers identified Vega as the "most important" star. It is 25 light years away from our planetary system. The constellation Lyra has been studied, perhaps, more than other stars.
Vega is the brightest star in the Northern Hemisphere.
Scientists were able to discover that the rotation speed of this star is very high. It is known that Vega is surrounded by a mysterious disk of dust.
The Assyrians nicknamed this star “the judge of heaven,” attributing to it the right to the highest justice. The ancient Greeks considered Vega part of the lyre, which was made by Hermes himself. Subsequently, Apollo gave this lyre to the famous Orpheus, friend and ally of Jason, the famous leader of the Argonauts.
Astrologers consider Vega one of the 15 stars that most strongly influence human destiny.
6Kate Winslet
Winslet's family relationships did not work out - she managed to give birth to three children from completely different men. Therefore, it is not difficult to predict that the actress strives to keep her personal life secret and does not make it public. Growing children have no need to listen to the envious gossip of spiteful critics and suffer from psychological trauma. The actress has made it clear more than once that children are a priority for her, so she deliberately avoids social and public life so as not to harm their normal childhood. Kate mostly lives with her family on the coast in England, and sometimes even refuses movie offers for the sake of her family’s well-being.
5Idris Elba
In films, Idris has the role of playing such superheroes, real alpha males and strongmen. In life, a man tries to keep his private life away from prying eyes. Therefore, when he appeared on the “red carpet” with his passion, it immediately attracted the attention of the press and caused various gossip. It seems that Elba's chosen one Sabrina Dhowra likes the social life, so the man agreed to put his personal things on display only because of his love for her. Idris himself made it clear that he is not famous for his “angelic behavior”, so he does not want to give the public the opportunity to take a closer look at him.
Betelgeuse (α Orionis)
It is located 570 light years from Earth. In astronomical atlases it is called Alpha Orionis and occupies the last place in the list of the brightest stars in the night sky. The mystery of Betelgeuse lies in its periodic variability. Astronomers cannot explain why it decreased by 15% in just a few decades. This fact haunts scientists. They continue to put forward new fantastic hypotheses about the origin of Betelgeuse.
Alpha Orionis is a red giant. During pulsation it exceeds the diameter of the sun by 500-800 times. To imagine this, you need to mentally transfer the mysterious Betelgeuse to our solar system. Then it would extend to the orbit of Jupiter.
In Altai fairy tales, Betelgeuse means an arrow shot by a hunter at a deer.
The study of Betelgeuse from the constellation Orion continues every day. It’s too early to talk about traveling to her.
4Julia Roberts
The famous “Pretty Woman” leads a life completely opposite to her heroine, namely, she hides personal relationships away from people. In 2002, the actress married a cameraman and settled with him on a ranch in New Mexico. The happy mother is raising three children, has converted to Hinduism and performs yoga asanas. Peace and nirvana, a personal corner and a beloved family - what else does a real woman need to be happy? And for major events, Julia appears in chic and splendor, leaving reasons to discuss her style and blooming appearance for several weeks.
