Coco Rocha - another Coco from the fashion world

Early years and biography

Coco Rocha was born on September 10, 1988 in the largest city of Canada - Toronto, but throughout her childhood the girl grew up in the small city of Richmond, which is located in the Canadian province of British Columbia. She saw her parents extremely rarely, since both her mother and father worked in the aviation industry.

Mom was a flight attendant, and dad worked as an airline ticket sales manager.

In her youth, Coco studied Irish folk dancing. She did not miss a single rehearsal and tried to squeeze every last drop out of herself at each of them, so that in the future at concerts and competitions she would be the best among the rest.

This hobby helped Coco get into the modeling world

Career

Coco started her career in 2002 thanks to one of her regular performances. The famous agent Charles Stewart “had his eye” on the girl during her performance at an Irish dancing competition and immediately offered her a contract.

But Coco does not immediately agree to collaborate with Charles, and first of all, she is looking for information about this man ( note to all future models ). Wikipedia and, of course, her friends help her with this. After all, at that time she was not yet interested in the world of high fashion and did not know about Charles or his agency. But soon, having made sure of his reliability, she, at the age of 15, decided to sign a contract with him.

Already in 2006, Coco Rocha worked with the popular photographer Steven Meisel. He shoots her for fashion publications. In February, her photo will grace the cover page of Italian Vogue for the first time.

And after some period he makes his debut on the catwalks of famous brands, including Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and Stella McCartney. From this moment we can say: Coco Rocha is a full-fledged model. Her schedule includes constant photo shoots, catwalks and fashion weeks. She is invited not only to perform at shows, but also to start them.

For example, Marc Jacobs entrusted Coco with the opening of the Louis Vuitton show

In 2007, the model walked on the catwalks of such world-famous brands as Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Chanel, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, and many other famous fashion houses. And in 2008, Coco begins and ends the Jean Paul Gaultier show with her catwalk.

At her young age, she is in no way inferior to top models who have extensive experience behind them. Many famous publications and designers want to work with her. And photographers are happy to invite the model to various photo shoots.

All this because:

  • Coco is hardworking;
  • gets involved in work from the first minutes of filming;
  • she knows how to choose the right pose;
  • knows his best angle;

Photographers Steven Maisel, David Sims and Steven Klein work with her at the photo shoot. A little later, Patrick Demarchelier shoots a model for a photo for the Pirelli calendar in 2008.

The organizers asked Coco to open the show of the world famous Jean-Paul Gaultier by performing Irish dance.

Naturally, the model coped with this perfectly. In 2008, Coco Rocha was included in the list of the most attractive young models according to the influential Vogue magazine. And everyone knows that if this magazine publishes someone’s name, declaring him promising, then the person will automatically have a successful career.

The art of posing with Coco Rocha: interview for the book release

Those who thought that modeling was a frivolous endeavor, an industry that required nothing more from a newcomer than a pretty face and the desire to smile for the camera, will have to say goodbye to the last of their delusions. The weighty volume “Learning to Pose,” created by Canadian model Coco Rocha and photographer Steven Sebring, reveals the work of the muse from a completely different angle. Some may even be put off by its volume and encyclopedic format, a little unusual for a lover of glossy articles and messages of a couple of hundred characters, however, it is difficult to overestimate the importance and timeliness of this work: not much has been written about the modeling business from the inside, and half of it is not suitable as a guide to action or a teaching tool.

— What was the inspiration for this book?

First and foremost, this is a tribute to every painting, film, photograph and drawing that has influenced me in my work. You will find among them references to Botticelli's The Birth of Venus, and even to the works of Charlie Chaplin, and I am proud of that. I have always believed that no matter what you do, you always need to give it your all, strive to become better, work hard on yourself. There are those who consider posing to be a trifling job, but this book is living proof of how the model and her plastic arts have inspired the best masters of painting, sculpture, architecture, poets and prose writers of all times. As far as I know, there are no collections like this one and I will be interested to see how the public receives it. Some people might laugh at the book, but hopefully others will take it seriously.

— There are exactly 1000 unique poses in the book. Even for an experienced model like you, was it not easy?

“I won’t lie: it was difficult!” But I’m one of those people who, when I go for a run, won’t stop until I collapse exhausted. I like to motivate myself, I am very goal-oriented. While coming up with 1000 poses, I often felt an internal struggle, at times I realized that having set a task for myself, I would not be able to stop before I completed it. I remember when I was halfway done, I admitted to Steven Sebring and my husband, James, that I was losing my nerve. Luckily, both of them were there and supported me, giving me ideas for new inspiration. One of them would shout, “Grace Jones” or “Fred Aston,” and I would take a pose that I associated with one person or another. Sometimes I combined two personalities into one, for example, I imagined what Elvis Presley would look like in the body of Marilyn Monroe, how this person would move. Towards the end, the work resembled a jazz performance. So I really enjoy flipping through the book and remembering who inspired certain images.

— Not so long ago it became known that you are expecting a child. Congratulations. But what is it like?

“I’m very excited about this new role for me.” My husband and I have always wanted children and it looks like the time has come. We have a wonderful home in a rural part of the country, my husband is always nearby and we work together on projects that are exciting for both of us. The birth of a child will be the most intriguing, the most exciting common thing for us, we will be happy to watch how life develops next. My favorite quote comes from Jean Paul Gaultier, who wrote the foreword to my book, he once said: “One of the most wonderful things in life is the ability to be surprised.” No matter what plans we make, as Gautier said, surprises cannot be avoided!

— Would you like to see your child in the modeling business? Over time, when he grows up.

“It would be hypocritical of me as a model to categorically deny my son or daughter the opportunity to try himself in the same role.” For any young model, it is important to understand who you are and what you are worth. I am proud of my career successes, but I am even more proud of the fact that I never went against myself and never made success the only measure of life. I only hope that I can instill the same principles in my child, no matter what fate he chooses. The only thing I would like to add: underage models must have a curator who would accompany them in photo studios and on set. Sending them there alone is unacceptable. Believe me, I will not stand aside if my son or daughter decides to go into modeling.

— Jean-Paul Gaultier wrote the preface to your book. You took part in his last show. How do you feel about his departure from ready-to-wear fashion?

— Gaultier is my friend and his shows are perhaps the best moments of my career. And I understand the reasons that prompted him to leave the ready-to-wear segment, and I believe that we should pay more attention to the collections that he will demonstrate as part of high fashion shows. Honestly, it’s hard for me to imagine how he managed to release 6 shows a year all this time. This is a crazy pace that you can’t break out of. Now there will be only two shows, but both of them will be incredible! I'm already looking forward to the next one.

— What advice would you give to girls and boys who want to become models?

— I think a good model is, first of all, a professional, ready for hard work. Too many people believe that a modeling career is more of a lifestyle than a profession. A good model should know her best sides, angles, understand what light is best to use, and inspire the photographer. But it is equally important to remember who you are and what you are capable of. There may be pressure on you to get your way, but I believe that honesty is rewarded. In addition, it is better for a model to be thick-skinned, because modern culture is a culture of critics. Hearing, “You're too fat” or “You're skinny as a board” somewhere among comments on social networks, you should not react, take it to heart, or even eat it that really hurts or worries you.

Beliefs and life position

Coco Rocha has gained respect among the general public for never giving up her beliefs. She has always been against people who encourage anorexia in the fashion industry.

Coco is quite vocal about the issue of eating disorders. And the reason for this is that girls begin their modeling careers at a very young age, and from the very beginning they become hostages of cruel rules.

World models. Coco Rocha.

Coco Rocher will turn 23 this year. And she has already managed not only to climb to the top of Olympus, but also to descend from it. Advertising campaigns, numerous photo shoots, shows of famous couturiers - all this was, is and will be in Roshi’s career, I hope for a long time.

Rosha should be grateful for her success not only to nature for the fact that she rewarded her with an interesting appearance: an unusual “cat-like” eye shape, an oval face and crazy facial expressions...

... but her gratitude should also extend to Ireland, and more precisely to Irish dancing. After all, she was noticed when Coco danced in one competition, and she received the title of “new discovery” after the Gaultier show, where she showed her skills.

Coco is a favorite of many designers. First of all, she shows off beautifully.

Secondly, he instantly takes on images and changes his facial expressions. She is always different, bright and original.

Thirdly, Rocha poses gorgeously. Dancing helps her tremendously in this: it is thanks to them that she gets into such crazy poses, which, however, photographers really like.

Coco can be described in one word - “non-standard”. Even in the example with the name. She is not at all the namesake of the famous Chanel; in Roshi's name - Coco - the stress is on the first syllable. And her name means “small,” as the model herself claims. However, she is not small at all. Both in terms of height and weight. Many fashion designers complained that Roche could do with losing weight. But the model stubbornly stood her ground, for which she received the unspoken title of “food lover.”

Naturally, to our everyday eyes, Coco seems very thin, but on the catwalks we need not just skinny ones, we need skinny models. However, Rocha is not alone in her relative completeness. Models such as Lara Stone or Barbara Palvin also do not have an anorexic physique. But their figure does not spoil their career. It’s true: even if you’re three times thin, you won’t get far without charisma. And Coco has enough charisma for two.

Coco Rocher was promised success by Wintour herself when she called her a promising face. And if Wintour accidentally calls any model promising, then it is doomed to success in absentia. The same thing happened to Coco. She began appearing on the covers of the most famous magazines and became more and more popular every day.

Coco Rocha was once my favorite model. Her appearance was mesmerizing, her movements were alluring, I really liked the photo sessions of this wonderful Canadian talent.

But, of course, like all models, Coco has bad shots. And with her non-standard appearance there are also bad angles. And I have always been interested in what photographers are guided by when exhibiting such photographs.

Coco knows how to take on different characters, and this video is a good example of that.

And in this video clip, Coco Rocha boasts of her ability to change her facial expressions with instant speed.

In addition, Rocha can also boast that she starred in a Diet Coke commercial, the packaging design of which was invented by Karl Lagerfeld himself.

Roche's personal life was also successful. She is married to interior designer James Conran. When I first saw his photograph, I thought: “Okay, maybe he’s a good person.” However, love is evil...

I wonder how James lives with such a “crazy” wife, in the good sense of the word. Rosha is mischievous and lively. By the way, this is why she is often invited as a TV presenter to various events.

Judge of the show "Gloss"

On February 12, 2013, a new project called “Gloss” was launched in which the lovely Coco Rocha became a judge and part-time mentor for young and promising girls. Judging side by side with her were model Karolina Kurkova and the creator of the show, Naomi Campbell.

However, on the show “Gloss” (originally “The Face”), both Coco and Karolina Kurkova did not last long. According to the press, the kind and hardworking Coco Rocha did not get along with the hot-tempered Naomi. Carolina left Gloss because she was very busy with work. But, nevertheless, the show “Gloss” continues to exist and compete with “America's Next Top Model”.

Personal life

In 2010, she marries James Conran. After the official ceremony, the newlyweds, together with their closest and dearest, went to France, where their luxurious symbolic wedding and banquet took place in one of the most luxurious castles in the Loire River valley, Chateau Challain.

Of course, there was a wedding photo shoot. There were a lot of photos in the press, because the model was wearing a beautiful dress from Zac Posen, which was appreciated by fashionistas all over the world.

And this year the 26-year-old beauty and James are expecting a new addition to the family. The couple announced that Coco was pregnant in a very sweet way.

Each of them posted a video on their Instagram pages in which the expectant mother appeared in the form of a doll rotating in a box.

If not for the caption, few would have noticed that the model was pregnant in the video. And very soon all fans of this couple will see a photo of a baby or toddler on their pages. And who knows, maybe after a while Coco will take the child with her to a photo shoot.

Facts from life

Coco's professional achievements include:

  • In 2010, Marie Claire gave her the status of Model of the Year;

  • Coco never agrees to pose nude for a photo shoot, or even take photos in a swimsuit or underwear;
