If a studio pays big money, it wants big action. Netflix produces many different projects at once, and therefore it is not necessary to please everyone. There are chances to make such a movie.”
Alksander Skarsgård's father, Stellan Skarsgård, is known for his roles in Lars von Trier's films, Pirates of the Caribbean, Mamma Mia! Their family has eight children - seven boys and one girl. “I try to come to Sweden whenever I can. I love her. This is the best place. We have complete chaos there, but it’s great - dogs, cats, children, friends, girlfriends. It's like a commune. This interview began in the rhythm of improvisation in the Concorde Hotel in Berlin: Stellan and I lived on the same floor and one day had to wait a long time for the elevator that was supposed to take us to the party after the Euro-Oscars. — When presenting the Euro-Oscar to the Dane Mads Mikkelsen, who played the villain in Casino Royale, you mentioned that he had the chance to torture Daniel Craig much earlier than you. You yourself were entrusted with torturing Craig only now - in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
- Yes, this is how it happens in life: I became an internationally famous actor earlier than Mads, and I got the opportunity to make fun of Daniel 6 years later than he did!
-Who else would you like to torture?
- Well, maybe some politicians. But I’m not a psychopath myself, I just play them from time to time. This is very interesting for the actor: maniacs sometimes hide their essence so well that even a psychotherapist cannot figure them out - many of them seem to be very nice and pleasant people. I never portray them as monsters, always as ordinary people, like your neighbor or friend, and let the audience figure it out for themselves. Everything is always mixed up in people, I don’t believe in good or bad guys. The line between psychopaths and normal people is very thin. We are all capable of doing the most terrible things. The fact of the matter is that during the Second World War, horrors in Europe were wreaked not by some nation of monsters, but by ordinary people! While playing my character, I remembered George W. Bush. He's such a nice guy who might be fun to drink with at a bar. However, he killed more people than any movie maniac!
I decided to play my character in “The Girl...” as a very, very positive guy also because his house looked somehow very revealing. Like a sex ring where 15-year-old girls are brought in to inject them with cocaine and take advantage of their vulnerability. The guy who rented this creepy place to us was overly tanned and had a gold chain that was too thick on his overly exposed chest. In order not to set myself up, I had to play this role really well! But this is not the first time David Fincher has made films about maniacs, and he shared his knowledge in this area.

- In my opinion, you get more pleasure from playing the roles of bad guys than from playing good guys - such as in the musical “Mamma Mia!”
— Yes, in this film my character was really not that interesting. But what a great time I had on set! For a week I did nothing but sail on a yacht in the Mediterranean Sea! My wife had never visited me on set until then; I never allowed her to do so. Like, I can’t be distracted, I have to be focused on work! And so she shows up for the shoot and sees Pierce Brosnan and I lying on a white sand beach, and twenty young half-naked dancers dancing around us! Since then, she doesn’t believe me and won’t let me go to the shoot alone!
“I’m going to star in a film for adults”
— What is it like to host Hollywood at home?
- This is not bad at all for the sake of variety! I still can’t go to them! Let them work in Sweden too. I still live in Stockholm, and sleeping in my own bed during filming was very nice. True, in Sweden we only did location shooting; the interiors were shot in Los Angeles.
—Have you corrected the mistakes of the Americans?
- No, I just laughed at them. Basically they all asked me how to pronounce this or that Swedish name correctly. However, in most cases everyone showed themselves to be great professionals. Even the chef managed to fry impeccable elk steaks.

— Weren’t you offered to act in the first, Swedish film adaptation?
- They offered me, but either the role or the script didn’t inspire me too much, or there wasn’t time - in short, I didn’t act in that film. But I agreed to work for Fincher even before the script was finished: I really wanted it! To tell the truth, it was not Stieg Larsson who inspired me, but David Fincher. I think there is no point in comparing the Swedish film with its version. If the continuation of the trilogy is directed by another director, it will be a completely different film.
— In my opinion, you are the only European actor who is invited in Hollywood to play “native speakers” - the British and Americans. Everyone else is only trusted to play the role of their compatriots because of their accent.
- But I also have an accent, I constantly struggle with it with the help of speech technique teachers. I worked with them, filming both Good Will Hunting and Mamma Mia! Here is my son Alexander (he is also becoming a big star before our eyes: he played the husband of Kirsten Dunst’s heroine in Lars von Trier’s “Melancholia” - S.T.) plays on equal terms with the Americans - he has no accent at all!

- Yes, I tricked him! Because I really wanted him to not only star in this amazing role, but also just be there. Paul is my best friend! I have no friends closer than him.
