Oleg Efremov: Biography, personal life and children

Biography

Oleg Efremov was born in Moscow in the famous Arbat alleys and courtyards. He lived with his parents in a huge communal apartment. During my school years I studied in the drama club at the House of Pioneers.

Oleg was introduced into theater circles by his friend Alexander Kaluzhsky, the grandson of the famous Moscow Art Theater student Vasily Luzhsky. Another childhood friend was Sergei Shilovsky, the son of Elena Sergeevna Bulgakova. Efremov often visited the house of the writer Bulgakov in Nashchokinsky Lane.

In 1945 he entered the Moscow Art Theater School, where that year the competition was 500 people per place.

Theater

After graduating from the Studio School, Efremov was not accepted into the Moscow Art Theater troupe. He joined the Central Children's Theater (now RAMT). He made his debut in the role of Volodya Chernyshev in the play “Her Friends” (1949) based on the first play by playwright Viktor Rozov. From 1949 to 1956, Efremov played more than 20 roles. There he made his debut as a director with the vaudeville production “Dimka the Invisible” (1955).

Director Anatoly Efros, who was then staging the play “Good Hour!” at the Central Children’s Theater, recalled rehearsals with Efremov: “Like many talented people, he had difficulty accepting other people’s creative proposals. During the production of the play “Good Hour!” We sometimes argued for the entire four hours of rehearsal. The rest of the actors, without starting to rehearse, went home, and when they returned to the performance in the evening, they found us standing in the same position and continuing the argument.”

Contemporary

In 1956, Oleg Efremov organized the “Studio of Young Actors” (later the Moscow Sovremennik Theater) and became the artistic director of the theater. Actors under the direction of Oleg Efremov opposed themselves to the ossified “main theater of the country” and staged young playwrights and writers - Viktor Rozov, Alexander Volodin, Evgeny Schwartz, Konstantin Simonov, Vasily Aksenov. Oleg Efremov said that “the art of theater is modern in its essence, because today it is happening - right this very second - it cannot be recorded in any way. Then it will be a different art.”

On the stage of Sovremennik he played in the plays “Eternally Alive”, “Destination”, “Nobody”. Playwright Yakov Varshavsky wrote that in Efremov’s play “there is that internal technique that allows the actor to be eloquent and completely understandable even where the author deliberately makes him laconic.”

Among the directorial works of Oleg Nikolaevich in Sovremennik: “Five Evenings” by Alexander Volodin, “Cyrano de Bergerac” by Edmond Rostand, the trilogy “Decembrists” by Leonid Zorin, “Narodnaya Volya” by Alexander Svobodin, “Bolsheviks” by Mikhail Shatrov, “Traditional Gathering” by Viktor Rozov , "The Naked King" by Schwartz.

Actress Lyudmila Ivanova recalled Efremov’s work: “He worked in such detail on all the scenes, on all the images, without allowing a single second of falsehood. He said that all the thoughts of an actor are read by the viewer, and these thoughts need to be there. It is not words that are important, but what a person thinks and how he lives. Efremov taught us to act passionately, to defend our beliefs.”

Moscow Art Theater

In 1970, Efremov became the chief director of the Moscow Art Theater. He seriously took up reforming the Art Theater, trying to return it to the tradition of the Russian psychological school.

Talented actors began to gather under the roof of the theater: some “contemporaries” came. Oleg Nikolaevich invited Andrei Popov, Alexander Kalyagin, Innokenty Smoktunovsky, Oleg Borisov, Tatyana Doronina.

After the division of the troupe in 1987, Oleg Nikolaevich became the chief stage director of the Moscow Art Theater in Kamergersky Lane (since 1989 - the Moscow Art Theater named after A.P. Chekhov).

Over thirty years at the Art Theater, he staged more than 40 performances and himself acted in 14 of them.

On the stage of the Moscow Art Theater, Efremov revived the legendary “Three Sisters” by V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko, staged “Ivanov”, “The Seagull”, “The Cherry Orchard”, “Uncle Vanya”, in which he himself played Astrov.

Following the Moscow Art Theater traditions, he also staged Maxim Gorky.

Oleg Efremov invited talented directors to the theater: Anatoly Efros, Lev Dodin, Kama Ginkas, Mark Rozovsky, Anatoly Vasilyev, Roman Viktyuk.

Personal life

In addition to cinema and theater, Oleg Nikolaevich had another passion - women. Many famous actresses fell under his spell - Nina Doroshina, Margarita Kupriyanova, Anastasia Vertinskaya, Antonina Eliseeva, Irina Miroshnichenko, Irina Skobtseva. There were legends about Efremov’s silent gaze; it was said that not a single woman could resist looking into his eyes.

But all the actor’s novels ended as suddenly as they began, because he did not put family or love relationships first; the main thing in Efremov’s life was work. Sometimes he decided to settle down and start a family, but all three marriages ended in divorce.

Oleg Efremov with his wife Alla Pokrovskaya

Efremov’s first wife was actress Lilia Tolmacheva. They lived together for six months, but were able to maintain friendly relations; Lilya remained one of the leading actresses in Sovremennik for a long time.

The second marriage was civil with screenwriter and VGIK teacher Irina Mazuruk. The couple had a daughter, Nastya, she was educated as a theater critic, and is now the President of the Oleg Efremov Charitable Foundation. Nastya's daughter Olya followed in her grandfather's footsteps and became an actress. After breaking up with Efremov, Irina Mazuruk tried to commit suicide, but she was saved.

In 1962, Oleg Nikolaevich tied the knot for the third time with actress Alla Pokrovskaya. In 1963, the couple had a son, Mikhail (now he is an actor and theater director, television presenter, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation). Mikhail has six children, the eldest son Nikita continued the Efremov dynasty and became an actor. Alla Pokrovskaya endured her husband’s infidelities longer than any other woman. After living with Oleg for twelve years, she could not stand it and filed for divorce.

Colleagues about Oleg Efremov

“I will forever retain, in addition to my almost childish admiration for the talent, charm and generosity of Oleg Nikolaevich, my deep gratitude to him for the help and trust that he showed me, a very young director, perhaps, in the most difficult years of my life. However, I think I’m not alone, many young people would not have become those mature people if it weren’t for Oleg Nikolaevich’s help,” recalled director Lev Dodin.

“He was generally interested in theater. He was one of the few who went and watched performances in Moscow. Not everyone goes to other people's productions... This is the specifics of the profession. But Efremov always walked and looked,” director Kama Ginkas said about Oleg Nikolaevich.

“The theater is his whole life,” said actor Vyacheslav Nevinny, who had almost 40 years of creative and personal friendship with Efremov. “The main thing that Oleg Nikolaevich strived for was for there to be a living person on stage, and not a buffoon depicting life, so that the life of the human spirit reigned in the theater, as bequeathed by the great Stanislavsky, whose faithful and persistent admirer Efremov himself was until the end of his days.” .

Galina Volchek, remembering Efremov, said that “Oleg brought us together for the sake of a single idea: to engage in psychological theater - one in which there will be a nerve, a thought, a soul. Of course, in the most varied forms, but under an indispensable condition: so that the content is not lost behind the form. And he ignited us so much with this idea, gave us such a powerful start, believed in us so inspiredly and was so ruthlessly demanding that this charge still lasts.”

“Oleg Nikolaevich had some kind of incomprehensible magnetism, a hypnotic influence on people, not only in his profession, but also in life. All the women adored him, and all the men tried to imitate him... I even tried to get the same cologne that Oleg used,” admitted actor Mikhail Kozakov.

Oleg Tabakov gave Efremov the following definition: “He, like a hero from mythology, with his forehead broke through the cast-iron and foam wall of the era of developed socialism and made this theater.”

Movie

Oleg Efremov acted often and a lot in films, playing about 70 roles, the most famous of which: “First Echelon”, “Soldiers Are Walking”, “Mom Got Married”, “They’re Calling, Open the Door”, “Battalions Ask for Fire”, “Burn , Shine, my star”, “War and Peace”, “The Case of Polynin”, “Once again about love”, “Traffic Inspector” and others.

In the two-part film “The Living and the Dead” by Alexander Stolper, Oleg Efremov played tanker Ivanov, who owns the famous phrase: “All of Russia rests on my name.”

In Tatyana Lioznova’s film “Three Poplars on Plyushchikha” Oleg Efremov and Tatyana Doronina told the poignant story of the failed love of a village woman and a capital taxi driver. The film’s director recalled working with Efremov: “I told him: “I’m so glad that you will be acting with me. At least now I’ll have someone to consult with.” And he: “Don’t expect that from me. As soon as I get into the skin of an actor, I am a complete zero as a director.”

In 1966, Eldar Ryazanov’s tragicomedy “Beware of the Car” was released, which instantly became a hit. Oleg Efremov played investigator Maxim Podberezovik, whose true passion is the Stanislavsky system.

Mikhail Efremov. Scandals and alcoholism

There were many scandals in the biography of Mikhail Efremov. For example, in 2016, at the Kinotavr festival, as the media wrote, the actor, after an evening promenade around the bars, “fed himself so much that at three in the morning he went down to the beach bar, where the Kinotavr banquet was still in full swing, in a bathrobe and slippers " “The artist made a fair amount of noise; only the festival security and the police officers on duty at the banquet were able to calm the merry fellow,” the news said.

It is noted that Efremov has not visited Kinotavr in recent years, and before his funny antics were the norm for the festival.

In general, Efremov had problems with alcohol for many years. “I never hid, unlike some, that I have problems with drinking. “Alcohol is a black stain on my reputation, which I am trying to clean,” Mikhail said in an interview in 2009.

The actor admitted that he was even coded, but this only harmed him. “The most interesting thing is that, being wired up, I drank more than when I wasn’t wired up. Such is the paradox. And at some point, something clicked in my head, and alcohol became no longer interesting to me. Apparently he drank his own. I’ve actually talked so much about this topic that it’s time for me to publish a book! Alcohol, of course, relieves stress and complexes, but, as you can see, you can easily get carried away with this panacea. So, if you are not confident in yourself, look for other ways to relax,” Mikhail Efremov said about alcoholism.

It must be said that news that artist Mikhail Efremov has quit drinking appears in the media almost every year.

For example, in 2014 it was reported that the popular actor began a new life: Mikhail Efremov moved from Moscow to St. Petersburg and gave up his favorite beer in favor of playing sports. The news wrote that Efremov goes to the pool and has lost about 8 kilograms.

Illness and death

In the last months of his life, Oleg Nikolaevich was seriously ill: his long-standing lung disease worsened, and he could only breathe with the help of an oxygen apparatus. However, Efremov did not complain and continued to work - he directed the Moscow Art Theater and rehearsed.

Writer Lyudmila Petrushevskaya recalled the director’s last days: “Everyone around him knew that he was dying. He was silent, never betrayed himself with a single word, never complained. It was even embarrassing to talk about one’s own illnesses in front of him. Oleg Nikolaevich maintained his existence by breathing oxygen through constantly reinforced tubes - his lungs were not working well. This apparatus was with him everywhere, a unit connected to poor, almost lifeless respiratory organs. It is unclear how this person existed. Constant pain in his leg, which had long been threatened with amputation, then ulcers in the intestines.”

He died in Moscow, in his apartment on Tverskaya Street, on May 24, 2000. The great director and man was 72 years old. On the day of farewell, it was impossible to approach the building on Kamergersky Lane because of the sea of flowers. On May 31, Oleg Efremov was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery next to the grave of K. S. Stanislavsky.

Biography

According to sources, our hero was born on October 1, 1927 in the large and noisy city of Moscow. According to the horoscope, Libra is a courteous, friendly, intelligent and cheerful person in life.

Almost all of the boy’s childhood was spent in a large communal apartment, which was located on Arbat. He was a cheerful, active child and was friends with the sons of famous people: Sasha (son of actor Vasily Kaluzhsky) and Seryozha (adopted son of Mikhail Bulgakov). Often visiting his friends, he constantly absorbed the entire creative atmosphere that reigned both in Bulgakov’s house and in Kaluzhsky’s house.

In childhood

According to the media, when he turned about 14 years old, he and his mother Anna Dmitrievna left for the city of Vorkuta. Here the boy's father, Nikolai Ivanovich, worked in the Gulag as an accountant.

The boy did not waste time in this city. Having become more familiar with the local camp life, Oleg gathered his own gang of thieves and led it. He climbed into apartments through the windows and opened the doors for his accomplices. Staying in Vorkuta did not do the boy any good, because here he first smoked and tasted vodka. When the father found out what his son was doing, he immediately sent him and his mother back to Moscow.

In one of his interviews, Efremov admitted that he could easily succeed as a gang leader in the criminal world, but thanks to his parents, who sensed trouble in time, he directed his leadership qualities into the theatrical direction.

In young age

As soon as the war ended in 1945, he decided to enter the Moscow Art Theater School. Although the competition was great, and there were many who wanted to become students of this educational institution, he still managed to charm the jury and was admitted on the first try. He studied hard and persistently, gave his best in all classes and rehearsals, and when he graduated, he was not hired at the Moscow Art Theater. For a young and ambitious guy, this was a fatal blow. But he decided not to give up and prove to everyone that they had made a huge mistake.

Career

According to sources, his creative career began on the stage of the Central Children's Theater in 1949. The first and very successful role took place in the play “Her Friends”. On the stage of this theater he played in about 25 productions: “Woe from Wit”, “Two Captains”, “Boris Godunov”, “Oliver Twist” and others.

On the theater stage

After graduating from the Moscow Art Theater School, he immediately got a job as a teacher there. He managed to find an approach and interest students so much that they simply adored him. Therefore, when he created his own theater, it was very easy for him to create a troupe from his favorite students.

His theater was completely different from others. Efremov made all his dreams come true in him. It worked on the principles of Stanislavsky himself and often featured productions by contemporary authors. Each actor was very close to the viewer and conveyed real live emotions to him. The theater grew, developed and achieved tremendous success in a short time.

When in 1970 he was offered to move to the Moscow Art Theater and lead it, he could not resist. After all, this was once his dream, back in his student years. He left Sovremennik and began to take up a new position. Here he spent 26 years of his life as an actor and director. He breathed new life into the Moscow Art Theater and it was literally reborn. Many performances were presented on its stage, which later became masterpieces of theatrical art.

Filmography

According to sources, Oleg first appeared on television in the melodrama “First Echelon” (1955) in the title role. After unprecedented success, he began acting almost every year. All the characters Oleg portrayed were different and he lived each role for real. Therefore, it always seemed to the viewer that he was playing himself on television.

Personal life: his women and children

According to the media, Efremov was a very amorous man, but at the same time he always strived for loneliness. Even though he was always surrounded by women, wives, children and relatives, he never had time for his family. He devoted almost his entire life to work. Therefore, there were many women in the actor’s life and they were constantly changing. After all, despite his charm and attractiveness, he could not keep them. They wanted attention, and he gave it to the theater.

Although work always came first for Oleg, he still loved women very much. They, in turn, almost always reciprocated his feelings, because it was impossible to resist his languid gaze and light smile.

There are legends about his personal life: many novels are attributed to him and they say that the actor broke many women’s hearts. In this article we will try to remember his women for whom he had reverent feelings.

Rumor has it that it all started back in school. The girl Tanya Rostovtseva simply captivated the heart of the future artist. All his thoughts were aimed at somehow attracting her attention and winning her over. But all his childhood attempts ended in failure, because the girl Tanya never became his girlfriend.

Then he passionately courted student Irina Skobtseva at the Moscow Art Theater School, but the girl rejected his feelings, preferring someone else.

Irina Skobtseva

Then he switched to classmate Lilia Tolmacheva, and when she finally reciprocated, he decided to marry her. But it turned out that the young people were completely unprepared for family life. They lived in the same room with his parents in a communal apartment and saw each other only at night (everyone minded their own business all day). Their marriage broke up after six months, unable to withstand the constant quarrels and misunderstandings of each other. It was difficult to get a divorce at that time, but they still managed to do it quietly. Many sources claim that it was for Lily’s sake, five years after their divorce, that he created his Sovremennik.

Liliya Tolmacheva

In order not to be left alone, Efremov began to seek solace among his colleagues. First he started a short affair with Antonina Eliseeva, and then with Margarita Kupriyanova.

Antonina Eliseeva and Margarita Kupriyanova

His next serious relationship was with Irina Mazuruk. She had nothing to do with the theater, but moved in literary circles. Although they had a magnificent wedding, they failed to officially register their marriage (at that time Oleg was trying to divorce Lilya), so they remained in an unofficial relationship. The couple lived in an apartment with Irina’s parents, who simply adored their son-in-law and forgave him everything (even when he often came home drunk).

Irina Mazuruk

Soon the couple had a daughter, Anastasia. They did not plan this child, and Irina did not dare to have an abortion (she was afraid of infertility). Their family was imperfect, because Oleg disappeared at work, and Irina cheated on him all the time. Therefore, this relationship lasted only three years, and then Efremov left. Ira somehow tried to keep him, even cut her wrists (they saved her), but he never returned to her.

The actor always maintained a relationship with his daughter; she spent a lot of time in his house (first with her grandparents in a communal apartment, then with her last wife before marriage). Anastasia gave her dad two grandchildren (Oleg and Vikenty) and a granddaughter Olga. Today she works as a critic and editor for several magazines.

Daughter Anastasia

It should be noted that one of the brightest was Efremov’s romance with actress Nina Doroshina. They met on the set of the movie “First Echelon” and did not part for a long time. But this love relationship did not continue, since Nina immediately realized that Efremov was created only for love, but not for family life.

Nina Doroshina

He also had a very beautiful and romantic relationship with actress Anastasia Vertinskaya, whom he met in Tashkent on tour. The girl took the initiative and began to change his everyday life for the better, dreaming of marriage and a happy family. But all her dreams were shattered when the actor started drinking again and returned to long-term work in the theater. She realized that their life together was doomed and left.

Anastasia Vertinskaya

Another ardent girl in the artist’s life is Irina Miroshnichenko. This beauty had a difficult character and ardent disposition. She considered herself a special, one and only woman who was given to Oleg as a gift. She resolved all everyday quarrels with loud scandals about the situation of the dishes and all kinds of demands. But the phlegmatic Oleg did not react to her in any way. The girl had to come to terms with the fact that she would not achieve anything from him and quietly leave.

Irina Miroshnichenko

The last official marriage took place with actress Alla Pokrovskaya. They had great love and a warm relationship. Alla can also be considered a truly wise and restrained woman, because she endured her husband’s antics and infidelities for twelve whole years, and then filed for divorce.

Alla Pokrovskaya

The couple had a son, Mikhail, who later followed in his father’s footsteps and also became a famous actor and TV presenter. His path to fame was thorny, because his father’s shadow did not allow him to fully open up. Mikhail became the same heartthrob as his father. He had many affairs and was married several times. As a result, he gave his father six grandchildren. Two of them (Nikita and Nikolai) became theater and film artists.

Son Mikhail

According to Oleg’s daughter Anastasia, after Alla, another woman appeared in the life of the great artist. Unfortunately her name is not known. She took great care of him, was kind to him, changed his life for the better and taught him to dress stylishly.

Last days

According to the media, in recent years, Efremov’s health has begun to fail. So that illnesses would not bother me so much, it was necessary to be treated. But the artist did not care about this: he worked more and did not complete a single course of treatment. It was hard for the emu to breathe, because the terrible disease emphysema was progressing. Special oxygen machines helped make breathing easier. After them it became easier, but at the same time Oleg constantly smoked and drank.

The legendary actor and director passed away on May 24, 2000 in his apartment in Moscow. At that time, the emu was 73 years old. Many people came to say goodbye to their beloved artist, because due to the number of flowers brought, it was impossible to approach him. He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow.
