Childhood

Biography

Kutcher was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, into the family of Larry Kutcher (an employee of a plant producing various General Mills products) and Diane, nee Finnegan, who works at [7][8][9] .

Mother's ancestors were Irish. The boy was raised in a conservative family that professed Catholicism[10][11]. Kutcher has an older sister, Tausha, and a twin brother, Michael, who underwent a heart transplant as a child.

The actor later admitted that he had attempted suicide at the time: at the age of 13, he almost jumped off the balcony of a city hospital - then his father prevented him[13]. When the boy was 16, his parents divorced. When he was in his senior year, Ashton broke into his school at night, intending to rob it, but he was arrested on the spot. He was sentenced to 180 hours of correctional labor and 3 years of suspended imprisonment. According to Kutcher, this event shook him when he lost his girlfriend and a university scholarship. Not to mention the censure with which the Kutcher family was met by their environment - acquaintances and the church.

In August 1996, Ashton entered the University of Iowa, upon graduation from which he was to become a biochemical engineer. He studied hard, motivated by the desire to find a cure for his brother's illness.[9] The young man was kicked out of the hostel in which he lived for causing too much disturbance and noise to his neighbors[14].

Ashton once said: “Back then I thought I knew everything about life, but I had no idea what lay ahead of me. I partied for days on end - when I woke up in the morning, I didn’t remember what happened the night before. I just went crazy. It’s strange that I’m still alive” (eng. I thought I knew everything but I didn’t have a clue. I was partying, and I woke up many mornings not knowing what I had done the night before. I played way too hard I am amazed, I am not dead)[15]. Kutcher joined the Delta Chi men's fraternity. To earn money, Kutcher worked part-time in the summer and also donated blood[16]. Then he was noticed in one of the bars called “The Airliner” in Iowa City and was asked to take part in the Fresh Faces Of Iowa modeling competition. After taking first place in the competition, Ashton dropped out of college and went to New York to attend the audition of the talent agency International Modeling & Talent Association (IMTA). He then returned to his hometown of Cedar Rapids before eventually moving to Los Angeles, where he pursued an acting career.
