How did Sergei Garmash pity his future wife

Biography

Sergei Garmash was born into a simple working-class family. The artist's surname suggests that his family tree included Zaporozhye Cossacks, who called artillerymen harmonicas.

Mother, Lyudmila Ippolitovna, originally from a small village in Western Ukraine, completed seven classes and worked all her life as a dispatcher at a bus station. Father, Leonid Trofimovich, was a driver, and after graduating from the institute he began to work in management positions. My parents had nothing to do with the theater; they only engaged in amateur performances in their youth.

Seryozha grew up as a difficult child: he often fought, broke glass, and could persuade the whole class to go to the cinema instead of class. He was expelled from school a couple of times. The boy dreamed of long voyages, was involved in sailing and planned to enroll in the “seafarer”. The schoolboy didn’t even think about an acting career; his mother submitted documents to the theater school, since there were few entrance exams.

Sergei recalls: “I finished eighth grade, not knowing what I would do next. And then one day my mother bought a directory for applicants. I looked through it and saw where there were fewer exams. It turned out to be in the theater. But I didn’t attach any importance to this and went to a sailing competition. And my mother, without saying anything, took my documents to the Dnepropetrovsk Theater School.”

Sergei Garmash passed the entrance exams surprisingly easily. He trained as a puppet theater artist, and then worked in his native Kherson, going on tours to nearby villages and collective farms. Two years later he was drafted into the army. During his service in the construction battalion, the soldier learned many useful things. Garmash doesn’t regret that time at all: “I learned a lot there, which was useful later in life: I can be a concrete worker, a slinger, I can do a lot of things with my hands.”

After demobilization, Sergei decided to continue his acting education in the capital. I applied to three theater universities at once, but chose the Moscow Art Theater School. During the exam, the young man read a twenty-minute passage from Dostoevsky. “This passage was my thesis on stage speech, it’s really long. But the commission did not interrupt me, listened to the entire passage, and I realized that they would take me,” said the actor.

Independent life

At the age of 15, Sergei Garmash left home and settled in a hostel in Dnepropetrovsk. The actor himself admits that he was very bored and it was hard, especially at first. And then I got used to it, got used to it.

While still studying, I went to Moscow with a friend with whom I lived in the same dorm room. Take a walk around the capital, and at the same time see what is happening in local theater universities. They visited the Shchukinsky and Shchepkinsky schools, wandered through their corridors, talked with the guys, felt the atmosphere, and saw the teachers - movie stars. And they were completely delighted. It seemed to the provincial boys that they were on another planet. But this did not stop them from returning to Dnepropetrovsk and passing final exams at their home school.

Garmash was assigned to the Kherson Theater: there were only 16 artists in the troupe, five of whom constantly traveled around local villages and villages. According to Sergei Leonidovich’s recollections, the tour seemed very romantic and fun to him. But a year later he was drafted into the army.

At that moment, he was just on tour, so he came to the military registration and enlistment office as one of the last, when all the “interesting troops” were dismantled and only the construction battalion remained. According to the artist, the army gave him a lot. He matured, learned to work with his hands, take a punch - in general, he became a real man.

Theater

After graduating from the Moscow Art Theater School in 1984 (workshop of Mikhail Tarkhanov), Sergei Garmash was accepted into the troupe of the famous Moscow Sovremennik Theater.

Today he is one of the leading theater artists with an interesting and extensive repertoire: Lopakhin in Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard,” Famusov in Griboyedov’s “Woe from Wit,” Elder Brother in “Karamazov and Hell” based on the late Dostoevsky, Alphonse in “Three Comrades” "Remarque, Mikhail in "Murlin Murlo" by Nikolai Kolyada, First Minister in "Once again about the naked king" by Leonid Filatov.

In the production of "Five Evenings" Garmash plays the main role - the driver Ilyin, who has returned to his hometown, disillusioned with life, but not losing hope of reviving the love of his youth. The actor also had the chance to take part in a play based on the work of his favorite writer Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky: in the production of “Demons,” Garmash revealed the character of Captain Lebyadkin.

The youth of actor Sergei Garmash, the path to the stage

Sergei easily passed the competition to the mentioned educational institution, after which he became a puppet theater artist.
He worked in this specialty in his hometown, went on tour to neighboring villages and collective farms. Two years later, the young man was drafted into the army, and Sergei ended up in a construction battalion. This experience turned out to be very valuable for his future life. At the end of his service, Garmash decided to go to study in Moscow. At the Moscow Art Theater School he read a long passage from Dostoevsky, and the selection committee treated him favorably.

Evening Urgant. An actor reads a song - Sergei Garmash He had the opportunity to study with Tarkhanov. Sergei always had a sense of humor and clearly defined his goals. Being very charming and hooligan, he became a leader among students. He had a couple of friends who were also born in September.

They celebrated their birthdays for a long time, forgetting about their studies. This “warm” company was once deprived of a scholarship for six months due to absenteeism. There was also a period when the guys worked as janitors. In winter it was necessary to clear the area of snow. But they spent their leisure time cheerfully: with feasts and their own performances of Vysotsky’s songs.

Already in my first year I noticed a beautiful girl at my educational institution - Inna Timofeeva. She was only 16 years old at that time, because she entered the studio immediately after secondary school. Inna never thought of starting a relationship with Sergei, a man five years older than herself. In general, he had to achieve his goal for a long time, because things did not go beyond “friendship”. Once, during a fight in a restaurant, Garmash broke his leg, after which he was in the hospital for a month. Then he walked on crutches for another three months, and Inna nursed him. This rapprochement influenced the further course of events.

Cinema

Sergei Garmash made his film debut at twenty-six years old. His first film was the military drama “Detachment”, filmed in 1984 by director Alexei Simonov, where he played Private Urin.

Alexey Simonov speaks of the actor this way: “He is organically reliable in his most varied manifestations. This is amazing stuff! There is an episode in the film when Urin “breaks down”, the team condemns him, and what a paradoxical, unexpected solution Seryozha found for simple things - it was incredibly interesting, and filmed in the first take. It was a pleasure to work with him... All my further observation of Seryozha’s life showed that I not only was not mistaken in relation to my picture, but also in relation to Seryozha himself, who turned out to be a very great artist.”

The film “Detachment” became the first acting success of Sergei Garmash. After the film was released, he began filming almost non-stop.

Most often, Sergei plays real male characters, although he does not consider himself a tough person. His characters are straightforward people, sometimes even cruel. The artist himself reasons as follows: “I think that this rather comes from typicality. With my face it would be difficult to play a tender lover fluttering through life. I don't really consider myself a tough person, although depending on the circumstances I can even be rude. In any case, it’s hard to call me soft and flexible.”

In 1990, Garmash met the outstanding director Vadim Abdrashitov and starred in his film “Armavir”. After some time, Abdrashitov again invited the actor to shoot. The role of Fidel in the film “Time of a Dancer” (1997) became one of his best performances. “It was high-class work. And in general, a meeting with Abdrashitov is always a serious stage for me,” says Sergei.

Vadim Yusupovich recalls: “The auditions for Armavir were long. And Seryozha played his role wonderfully. For “Time of the Dancer,” the auditions were very quick. I was sure that Sergei would do. We put a uniform on him, started with the most difficult scene, and it became clear that the role of Fidel was his. Sergei Garmash is a very bright and talented actor. He played flawlessly in my film. I like what he does in cinema and theatre, especially Lopakhin in the theatre.”

And after the role of captain in “Voroshilovsky Shooter” directed by Stanislav Govorukhin (1999) and Major Yuri Korotkov in Yuri Moroz’s series based on the works of Alexandra Marinina “Kamenskaya” (1999), viewers began to recognize the artist. Sergei Garmash: “Personally, I think that “Voroshilov Shooter” is a good film for that time. And I am grateful to Govorukhin that he invited me to act. My role there is small, but it was interesting for me to play it, and it subsequently served me well.”

In 2000, Sergei Solovyov’s drama “Tender Age” was released, in which Garmash played a small role of a retired military man - a school teacher in basic military training. People's Artist of Russia Nina Usatova says: “With Sergei, everything is real, and in every role he is real. And he is one of those actors who does not spare himself. I love such partners. He is in the game and gives you a lot, and does not spare himself. When an actor gives his all, this is probably the most rewarding thing in our profession. This does not go unnoticed by the audience, because the viewer sees how the artist works on stage and pays with gratitude, and the partner even more so.” For his role in this film, Sergei became a laureate of the Nika and Golden Aries awards.

Garmash’s successful works also include the main role in Dmitry Meskhiev’s comedy drama “Mechanical Suite” (2001). “This is my first meeting with Meskhiev, and I really love the Mechanical Suite. I consider the time when this picture was filmed to be a happy time for me. I haven't played weak people very often. Here my character is weak, unlucky and sick. And with all this, with some kind of inner world,” explains the artist.

In 2003, Valery Todorovsky’s film “The Lover” was released. For his role in this film, Sergei Garmash was nominated for the Nika Award. Director about Kamenskaya." He is a very successful actor. There will always be a role for him. It may be small, but it will be there. In addition, Garmash perfectly fulfills the tasks assigned to him, giving his best to the end. Any frame with him is a complete work of art.”

Garmash considers working with Valery Todorovsky a real miracle: “A role in such a film is a gift for an actor. In my opinion, the film was a success, I liked it, but I don’t like all the films in which I acted.”

The peak of Sergei Garmash's fame came in 2007, when he starred in two films nominated for an Oscar: “12” by Nikita Mikhalkov and “Katyn” by Polish director Andrzej Wajda. For playing the role of a juror in the film “12,” the actor became a laureate of the Nika national cinema award for best actor.

According to Sergei, the relevance of Mikhalkov’s drama is that “the jury system has not worked for us. The film is a clear example of how it can work and develop skills of civic behavior... Since deep Soviet times, I have liked it when cinema gives moral lessons to viewers. People read less now – but we used to be a very reading country! The Komsomol and the Pioneers disappeared. I don’t regret them, but institutions that can instill a sense of civic responsibility from a young age are necessary. I learned a lot from cinema. Starting with the basics: what is good and what is bad. And I think it’s important that the film 12 appeals to our civic conscience.”

And Andrzej Wajda spoke about his film: “The role of Captain Popov, brilliantly played by Sergei Garmash, is important... This image was formed from two stories. In one, a Russian officer, leaving for the Finnish front, saved a Polish woman from exile by marrying her. In the second, another Russian officer, when they came to take the wives of Polish prisoners of war, saved a woman and her daughter by covering them with his own overcoat.”

In 2008, Garmash superbly played the role of the protagonist’s father in Todorovsky’s musical drama “Hipsters.” In this film, the actor sang for the first time in a movie, performing the song “Man and Cat” by the group “Zero”. “It was the first time I heard myself sing. I haven't done this professionally before. I sang Vysotsky’s songs a couple of times at the presentation of the “Own Track” award of the Vladimir Vysotsky charitable foundation, and that’s all. The producer of our film, the amazing composer and music director Konstantin Meladze, made me sing, although before that I was sure that I couldn’t…”. For this role, Sergei Garmash received the Golden Eagle award as best supporting actor.

In the 2010s, Garmash played mainly military roles. Thus, in the 2011 TV series “Countergame” he played Colonel Kosachev, in “The White Guard” he played Petlyura’s Colonel Kozyr-Leshko. In the 2013 series “Heteras of Major Sokolov,” the artist was convincing in the role of retired captain Ryazantsev.

Recent works include the role of Danilov in the post-war crime drama “Leningrad 46”, as well as Captain Lapin in the film “The End of a Beautiful Era”, Pavel Vasilyevich Ikonnikov in the series “Investigator Tikhonov”, Alexander III in “Matilda”, Khromov in the comedy “Partner” ", Deputy Prime Minister in the science fiction film "Attraction", Nikolai Trotsky in the historical film "Trotsky", Major Taratut in the melodrama "Cold Tango".

On December 28, 2020, the action drama “Moving Up” with the participation of Sergei Garmash was released. In this film, the inimitable Vladimir Mashkov starred as the coach of the Soviet basketball team, which beat the “invincible” US team at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

The team players were played by young talented actors - Ivan Kolesnikov, Kirill Zaitsev, James Tratas, Kuzma Saprykin, Alexander Ryapolov.

Garmash’s filmography is constantly expanding; he already has more than a hundred film roles to his credit. In addition to the listed directors, he was invited to act in films: Timur Bekmambetov, Sergei Bodrov, Pavel Lungin, Vladimir Khotinenko and others.

Sergei Garmash about his work in cinema:

“I refuse (the role) when I feel: bad material. Sometimes I can’t film because I’m busy with another film. To be honest, I don't always refuse when I need to do this. Sometimes I agree, knowing that the work will not be successful, just to make money. There are many films where I starred just to make money. There are jobs that are embarrassing. I would like to play a doctor. I am interested in this profession, as a child I dreamed of becoming a doctor, then I realized that it would not work out. I would also like to play in a comedy.”

Childhood and education of Sergei Garmash

Sergei Leonidovich Garmash was born in Kherson (Ukrainian SSR) on September 1, 1958.

Father - Leonid Trofimovich Garmash (born 1933) - worked as a driver in his youth, after which he received a higher education and successfully advanced in his career.

My paternal grandfather was an accountant for a construction company in Kharkov, and my grandmother was an accountant at the Southern Railway. The surname Garmash comes from the Zaporozhye Cossacks. This is what artillerymen were called in the Cossack army, according to the biography of Sergei Garmash on Wikipedia.

Mom - Lyudmila Ippolitovna Garmash (born 1935) - comes from Western Ukraine, has Polish roots, worked as a dispatcher at a bus station.

Sergei Garmash has a younger brother, Roman.

Sergei Garmash did not do well at school. He also did not have good behavior. However, the humanities came easily to him. At the same time, Sergei dreamed of a nautical school during his school years. But he had problems with mathematics, and the school required knowledge of the exact sciences.

Sergei was fond of sailing at school and took part in competitions.

After graduating from school, Sergei Leonidovich Garmash did not know where to go to study next. He read the handbook for applicants entering universities and found out that the most suitable exams are at theater institutes. Sergei's fate was decided by his mother. While Garmash was at the regatta, his mother gave her son’s documents to the Dnepropetrovsk Theater School.

Sergei Garmash easily passed the competition at the school, and after graduating, he became a puppet theater artist. Artistic life took place in Kherson, interspersed with tours to neighboring villages and collective farms.

Two years later, Garmash was drafted into the army. He served in a construction battalion. After the service, I decided to try myself at a university in the capital. Sergei entered the Moscow Art Theater School. During the admissions exams, he read a long passage from Dostoevsky , and the admissions committee treated him favorably.

Sergei Leonidovich Garmash entered the course of Ivan Mikhailovich Tarkhanov . In the student circle, Sergei immediately showed leadership qualities: he was witty, moderately hooligan, and, of course, charming.

Sergei Garmash loved pranks both in his student days and when he was already an adult actor. Actress Vera Voronkova said that actor Sergei Garmash once jumped out of a fifth-floor window, offended by the inattention of his colleagues. Thus, the actor decided to prank his colleagues on the set of the film “Time of the Dancer,” which took place in Crimea in 1997.

Voronkova said that this happened on the last day of filming, when Garmash was offended that he had no one to talk to. Voronkova herself was unable to devote time to the actor, as she needed to rehearse a scene from the film. Then he promised her to jump out of the window if the actress did not want to talk to him. Closing the door, Voronkova saw Garmash running along the corridor to the window.

“Shards fell on the floor and there was the sound of broken glass. And my hands are numb, I can’t even scream, I just made a moan. I think: “He’s definitely dead!” After all, it’s the fifth floor,” said the actress.

As a result, it turned out that the actor fell into a construction cradle, which the workers left unattended, they wrote in the news.

There was a period when he and his friends had to work part-time as janitors, since they were deprived of their stipend for six months for absenteeism.

Leisure time in the hostel was fun - feasts, Vysotsky songs. In 1984, Sergei Leonidovich graduated from the acting department of the Moscow Art Theater School, after which he was accepted into the troupe of the Moscow Sovremennik Drama Theater. Personal life of Sergei Garmash

Sergei Garmash, while still at the Studio School, courted a girl, Inna Timofeeva , but things did not go beyond friendly relations. As the proverb says: if there was no happiness, misfortune would help. Once, during a fight in a restaurant, Sergei broke his leg and spent a month in the hospital. Then he walked for a long time on crutches. Friends helped him recover, and especially Inna, with whom he became close during that period. Soon they got married.

When Sergei was hired at the Sovremennik Theater in 1984, he asked that his Inna be taken there as well, since she was initially assigned to the theater in Noginsk. So they have been serving in the same theater ever since.

The Garmash couple have two children. In 1988, daughter Dasha was born, and in 2006, son Vanya. According to friends, Sergei and Inna have a very harmonious marriage. Actor Sergei Garmash extremely values his own family hearth. Dasha entered the production department of VGIK. In preschool age, Vanya began attending the “Little Genius” club, where he studied drawing, mathematics, reading, and so on.

Personal life

The actor has been happily married to his fellow student at the Moscow Art Theater School, Inna Timofeeva, for many years.

Sergei Garmash met his future wife in his first year at the institute. “Inna was only 16 years old, she came from her parents, straight from school. And I am a man with a past, five years older. She didn't really like me. I didn’t show my face, but she is a beauty. I can be very stubborn. This helps in life, and in the acting profession you achieve some results. I walked around Inna in circles for two whole years. We seemed to be friends: we went to the cinema, to exhibitions, and walked. Inna was looking at me all this time. Then I took her out of pity. I broke my leg, so unsuccessfully that I almost remained lame for the rest of my life... I spent a month in the hospital, Inna visited me like a fellow countrywoman. From the hospital she took me to her dormitory, somehow she was allowed to. I spent another three months jumping on crutches, covered in a cast. Inna nursed me, and then, probably, she developed a feeling for me,” recalls the actor.

Four years after the wedding, a daughter, Dasha, was born, and in 2006, a son, Ivan. Sergei Garmash became a father for the second time at the age of 48. “When my daughter was six months old, I once took her in my arms, and the following thought came to my mind: “My God, how small and tender she is!” If there was a boy, I wouldn’t be able to love him so much.” Now I understand how wrong I was. Vanya, who was born 18 years after Dasha, is a gift from God. Definitely added youth: at 50, I feel like just a boy. We were really looking forward to Vanka. I won’t say that we got Vanya right away, we had to work hard on it,” notes Garmash.

Despite the fact that Sergei and Inna work in the same theater, this does not affect their relationship in any way: “We are also in the Sovremennik Theater, although we work together, without saying a word, we behave not like husband and wife, but simply like colleagues - Timofeeva and Garmash. And for me this is extremely important. In general, I categorically do not understand family relationships in creativity... Of course, you can name me such couples as Panfilov and Churikova, Lazarev and Nemolyaeva, Rybnikov and Larionova. But these are exceptions. And you know, I’ll be honest: the fact that everything is so successful in my creative biography is a huge credit to Inna. It is of enormous importance to me what my wife says about this or that work of mine. She is my artistic council. He points out some “fleas” in the role, honestly says where I played well and where I messed up. And I always consult her about scripts, even when I’m coming up with a character design. Inna has always been my support. I come from filming and a day later I have to fly out again or play a play. And this cycle is endless, you can go crazy from it. But I know the main thing: I’ll return home, and there my beloved woman will be waiting for me, who will warm me, and calm me down, and feed me, and wash me, and take care of me... And this confidence gives me strength.”

Inna Timofeeva about her husband:

“Seryozha is not a brawler, but he can be very restrained. He gets nervous on the set or in the theater, gets tired, and can throw out his irritation. It happens that it can start from some obvious nonsense. More often than not, I’m the first to seek reconciliation: let’s calm down, let’s talk. Seryozha will still shout that he won’t talk and doesn’t want to know anyone at all, but then everything falls into place. It happens occasionally that I get excited too. In these cases, Seryozha is even afraid of me.”

Sergey Garmash about himself:

“To be honest, I drank. You know, some people know how to drink, and some don’t. Here I am - from the second category. And many thanks to Inna, who stopped me and fought this illness. But I hope that now this path has already been passed, everything is behind us... There are many things in my life that I really regret. I haven’t read as much, for example, as I could have, but now I’m catching up, I’m reading a lot. I didn’t devote as much time to my daughter as I would have liked. I undeservedly offended my wife and other people, may God forgive me... I don’t want to say that I am made entirely of shortcomings. It seems to me that I am natural – just the way I am.”

Childhood and youth

His mother worked as a dispatcher at a bus station, and his father worked as an ordinary driver. The parents attended an amateur theater, where they met. Lyudmila Ippolitovna and Leonid Trofimovich had two sons: Sergei and Roman. According to Garmash’s recollections, studying at school was not easy for him. The exact sciences especially caused a lot of trouble. He was catastrophically behind on them. It was precisely this dislike of mathematics and physics that became the reason for entering a theater university.

The parents were happy with their son’s choice, since they themselves had dreamed of an acting career since childhood. They not only helped him choose a higher education institution, but also took the documents to the admissions office. The talented young man easily passed the exams and became a student. After graduating from university, he worked for some time in a puppet theater. After serving in the army, Garmash decided to go to Moscow.

In the capital, Garmash enters the Moscow Art Theater Theater Studio . He remembered his studies in Moscow for the rest of his life. Its leader was Mikhail Tarkhanov, and Galina Volchek and Valentin Gaft took the exams for the future actor. According to the recollections of friends, Garmash was the soul of any company and did not miss a single student party. The young man became so carried away that one day he was almost expelled from the institute for absenteeism. As a result, Sergei was deprived of his scholarship and had to work part-time as a janitor for six months.

Hobbies

Sergei Garmash dreams of the sea, of a large yacht on which he would set off along the route from the film “The Children of Captain Grant.” His hobby is reading. He knows Russian literature and poetry well, and enjoys reading foreign authors - F. Kafka, P. Suskind, M. Pavich, M. Kundera, A. Baricco. Loves fishing and meeting friends.

A gift of fate

They got married in the early 90s. Their lives had everything: an unsettled life, when there were not even closets to fold clothes. And the lack of money, and the drunkenness of Sergei Leonidovich, who himself admits to this. It was very difficult, like everyone else in the country in the nineties.

Sergei and Inna fought, made peace, but never in their lives did it come to a divorce. And in 2006 they became parents again. The young father was then 48, and his mother was 43. According to the couple, their son Vanya restored their youth, added strength and bright colors to their lives. They moved to a large and bright house outside the city. Sergei Leonidovich continues to act in films, Inna Germanovna Timofeeva plays, as many years ago, in Sovremennik. It cannot be said that their life is cloudless and problem-free. But they go through all the difficulties together, just like 34 years ago when they got married.
