When it comes to Indian cinema, the comedy “Zita and Gita” and the film actress who played two twin sisters immediately come to mind. During her long, brilliant career in Indian cinema, Hema Malini played in more than 100 films, directed 4 films, produced several television projects and was recognized as the best actress in Bollywood.
Hema Malini
The beginning of the way
Hema Malini Chakravarti is an Indian film actress, dancer, producer, director, political and social activist.
Hema was born on October 16, 1948 into a wealthy family in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. She was the third child and Hema has two older brothers. The girl's father worked in the Ministry of Labor and Employment. Her mother was a film producer, so Hema dreamed of becoming an actress since childhood. The girl inherited her excellent appearance from her parents, and dance and vocal teachers helped develop her grace, excellent plasticity and command of her voice.
Childhood and youth
The girl's career as an actress was destined for her from birth. Hema Malini Ramanujam Chakravarthy was born on October 16, 1948 in a wealthy Tamil family, her mother was a film producer. True, not in Bollywood, but in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, where Hema was born and raised.
Hema Malini in her youth
Music, dancing and singing lessons shaped the girl’s proportionate figure, taught her to master her voice and move gracefully, and inherited her beauty from her ancestors.
Film career
Hema Malini made her film debut in 1965 in Pandu Leaves This World, a fantasy film in the actress's native Telugu language. She played a dancer in one of the episodes. Small works in a small studio and in a language spoken only in the southern states of the country could not bring fame to the ambitious Hema. This required a different scale, so after playing a few more small roles in the films of a local film studio, the girl decided to set off to conquer Bollywood.
Hema Malini
Her first work in Hindi was “Dream Salesman,” in which the future star’s co-star was the famous Raj Kapoor. With the release of My Name is Johnny in 1970, Hema gained fame, and film critics called her a promising actress. But Hema Malini’s real fame and status as a megastar of Indian cinema came in 1972 with the comedy drama “Zita and Gita”, for her performance of the two main female roles in which she was recognized as “Best Actress” according to the Filmfare Award (Bollywood’s most prestigious film award). During the filming of this landmark film in Hema's career, strong feelings flare up between her and the performer of one of the main male roles, Dharmendra, and, having overcome all obstacles, they become husband and wife. The actors' union became the most successful commercial project in the history of Bollywood. They starred in 35 films together, 16 of which became hits not only in their homeland, but also abroad.
The 1970s-1980s were the peak of Hema Malini’s acting career. She is successful, famous and desirable. Her photographs never leave the pages of newspapers and magazines. The actress is called the “Dream Girl”. She stars with the most famous Indian directors along with the most popular actors in Bollywood. Every year he takes part in several projects. The most memorable of them were: "Beloved Raja" in 1972, "City of Love" in 1974, "Revenge and Law" and "The Forgotten Wife" in 1975, "King of the Jungle" in 1976, "Girl dreams" in 1977, "The Adventures of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" in 1979, "The Magnificent Seven" in 1982, "Blind Law" in 1983 and "The Widow's Fate" in 1986. Hema most often played loving and devoted wives and mothers, however, she was equally good at the deep dramatic roles of the goddesses of Indian legends and myths, historical figures and women defending their rights.
In the 90s, Hema can be seen on the silver screen only occasionally, because she is no longer offered roles of young girls, but she also cannot play their mothers, because still quite young. But in 2000, the star again shines on the silver screen in the film “Breath of Time.” Then several more films with her participation were released: “Love and Betrayal” in 2003, “Fallen Angel” in 2007, “Love Without Borders” in 2010, “Old Man Buddha” in 2011.
In the early 2000s, Hema Malini tried her hand as a director and producer of TV series. Her own film studio released “Dancer” in 1992 and “Tell Me, God” in 2011. Moreover, in “Dancer” the famous Malini plays the main role, and in “Tell Me, God” she works with Bollywood stars Jitendra, Mithun Chakraborty, Amrita Singh and Shah Rukh Khan.

Dancer career
Hema Malini masters the art of Bharatnatyam dance (the main style of classical Indian dance, which originated in the artist’s native state of Tamil Nadu) at the highest level. Her daughters were trained in the oldest style of East Indian dance, Odissi. Hema and her daughters perform at charity events and also take part in dance festivals.
Hema Malini
She choreographs dance shows around the world and runs and teaches her own classical dance school. According to Hema herself, her mother took her to a dance school when the girl was 6 years old, and from that time on, dance became an important part of her life. She always enjoyed performing on stage, and her dance numbers in the movies were some of the most difficult.
What kind of people are in Bollywood: amazing facts about Hema Malini
Cinema is to India what football is to Brazil or bullfighting is to Spain. In terms of film production, India is ahead of Hollywood, and watching a movie in this country always turns into a show. Spectators throw rupees at the screen as a sign of approval and dance along with the characters in the films. What comes to your mind when it comes to Indian cinema? Without much thought, the Soviet viewer will remember the comedy melodrama “Zita and Gita.”
Watch the legendary film “Zita and Gita” on January 1 at 19:15 and January 3 at 06:00 on the MIR TV channel.
The Soviet audience has always liked the colorful Indian vinaigrette of drama, adventure and comedy. “Zita and Gita” was watched by 55 million people, which means the movie can rightfully be called a cult film. What can we say about India itself, where the film has long been recognized as a masterpiece and classic. Among foreign films in Soviet film distribution, the colorful film steadily occupied a leading position. The story of twin girls who were separated for many years was published in 1972. Soviet film distributors had to cut some parts of the film. Several dances and songs were removed, but after that the picture did not lose its oriental flavor. A Soviet person could hardly buy a ticket for the evening screening of Zita and Gita. Therefore, many viewers went to cinemas during the lunch break.
The performer of two main roles in “Zita and Gita,” Hema Malini, expectedly became an actress.
Her mother was a film producer, so we can assume that Hema was destined for an acting career from birth. Since childhood, the future actress knew how to sing and move well, since she took vocal and dance lessons, and also had a bright appearance. It was not difficult to break into the first echelon of movie stars. Malini first appeared in films in 1965 in the film Pandu Leaves This World in a cameo role. She played a dancer, and already in 1968 she received the leading female role in the film “The Dream Merchant”, where Raj Kapoor became her partner. However, the dance numbers in this film were not as difficult to perform as in Zita and Gita.
Then the actress began to be offered more complex roles, and fans began to truly admire her talent after filming “Zita and Gita.” The film quickly became popular, and every second Indian actress began to imitate Malini in her acting style. Uzbek director Latif Fayzief, who in 1979 made a film based on oriental fairy tales “The Adventures of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves,” did not have to think long about who to invite for the main female role. In general, Malini never felt unclaimed. In total, her track record includes more than 150 films.
What is the main merit of actress Malini? Hema managed to get used to two completely different types. Zita is a quiet, calm girl who grew up in a loving family. She enjoys working, helping those in need, and honoring family traditions. The Gita is its complete opposite. She grew up as a street girl among gypsies, so she has an eccentric and mischievous character. Gita knows how to stand up for herself, does not mince words, loves to show acrobatic stunts and magic tricks on the street. Malini brilliantly got used to both roles in one film, although psychologically it was not at all easy.
Hema felt the people's love immediately. Combined with personal charm, it helped her launch her political career. In 1999, Malini took part in the election campaign of her screen partner, actor Vinod Khanna, who decided to run for parliament. Hema liked the elections, and in the 2000s she decided to participate in the elections to the Upper House of the Indian Parliament. Thanks to her national fame and charm, Malini became a prominent member of the Indian People's Party and, albeit for a short time, its general secretary. Her advanced age did not prevent 66-year-old Hema from taking part in the 2014 parliamentary elections. She won with more than 500 thousand votes.
The love story with Malini Dhamendra, his co-star in Zita and Geeta, is worthy of a separate Indian film.
The actor was married and did not want to leave his family, and Malini could not go against the wishes of her parents and live with a married man. But suddenly Hema's father died and Malini's family accepted her choice. Dharmendra achieved recognition of the second marriage as valid despite the fact that there is no bigamy in Hinduism. Dharmendra and Hema have been together for more than 30 years: “It had to happen, and I don’t regret anything,” the actress admitted. “He still looks at me the same way he did when he first saw me.” He still makes me feel special." From Dharmendra Hema had two daughters, Eshu and Ahana. The first daughter followed in her mother's footsteps and became an actress.
Now Hema Malini, who played both sisters in the film, is 70 years old, and at the time of filming she was 24 years old.
She no longer acts in films and practically never attends social events. Although in 2017, Malini made an exception for Russian fans and came to Russia to meet them. She admitted that she knew practically nothing about the hype around “Zita and Gita” in Russia. When asked which of the sisters the actress is more like, Malini replied: “Both! In my youth, I was modest, shy and timid, like Zita, I could not fight back anyone. But over the years she became stronger, bolder, more confident, like Gita.”
Hema Malini now lives in her house in Mumbai, which was bought with royalties from filming Zita and Gita. It has a dance hall and a private temple. Together with her daughters, she often performs at charity events and also participates in dance festivals. In every country in the world you can find at least one fan club of the actress. On her Instagram and Twitter pages, Hema actively shares her impressions of traveling around the world, talks about her social work and congratulates her subscribers on the holidays. The actress rarely talks about her personal life.
Other activities of Hema Malini
In 2000, Hema Malini was appointed Chairman of the Indian National Film Development Corporation, the first woman to hold this position. In 1999, Malini was awarded the Filmfare Award for her achievements in the Indian film industry, and in 2000, she received the Padma Shri, one of India's highest government honors in recognition of her achievements in the field of art. The actress’s entire long-term activity related to the development of Indian cinema and dance culture in India was awarded several more awards.
Hema Malini
Hema is an active member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (a religious organization founded in 1966 that promotes self-knowledge through spiritual practices) and professes Vaishnavism. The actress's huge house in Mumbai even has its own temple.
The actress supports the world's largest animal rights organization PETA and in 2009 wrote an open letter to the Mumbai City Council asking for a ban on horse-drawn carriages on the city's streets. Such trips were a favorite pastime for tourists, but local activists complained of cases of animal cruelty. And in 2020, such a ban was finally adopted. In 2011, Hema Malini appealed to the Environment Minister to take action to ban bullfighting, which is so popular in Tamil Nadu. The document noted facts of unjustifiably cruel treatment of animals by bullfight participants. The use of bulls in various entertainment events was soon made illegal. For his active work in support of the animal rights movement, as well as for the popularization of vegetarianism, the Bollywood star was named PETA Person of the Year 2011.
Zeenat Aman
In the USSR, Zinat Aman fell in love after the film “The Eternal Tale of Love,” where she played an imperious princess with a kind, however, heart, but she really became popular with Soviet audiences after the release of the Soviet-Indian project “The Adventures of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” ", where Hema Malini, Dharmendra and Frunzik (Mher) Mkrtchyan also starred with her. Aman got the role of the crafty but brave Fatima, the daughter of a merchant killed by robbers. The Indian audience was fascinated for a long time by one of the first roles of Zinat - a girl who ran away from her cruel father and stepmother into a hippie community.
Aman’s biography can hardly be called typical for an Indian actress of that time. She was born in Germany, the daughter of a Muslim father and a Hindu mother, and her parents divorced when she was still a toddler. Zeenat's mother took her to Bombay (Mumbai). She remarried, and very successfully - her stepfather turned out to be a wonderful person.
After finishing school, Zeenat went to study in the USA and returned to become a journalist. The girl’s bright appearance attracted attention, and she was offered to work as a fashion model. Already as a fashion model, she got a screen test - they needed a girl who would look organically in the role of a hippie, and Aman turned out to be ideal. Alas, Zinat’s life always lacked the independence that the directors saw in her heroines.
Her first man was a married actor - and she agreed to become his unofficial second wife. But it all ended with the actor and his official wife publicly beating Zinat, severely damaging her right eye, and to justify themselves, they also denounced her as easy-going. In addition, he made it very difficult for her career in Hollywood, and for a long time Aman had to be content with roles in second-rate films.
The second husband, also an actor Mazhan Khan, from whom Zeenat gave birth to two sons, also began to beat Aman. After twelve years of such married life, Zinat filed for divorce.
But during the process, Mazhan, who loved alcohol, died from kidney failure (according to another version, from cancer, which he treated for a long time with the money of the much more successful Aman). Mazhan’s relatives blamed Aman for his death “out of grief” and a crowd came to her home to beat her. Her eleven-year-old son Azan took part in the beating, and this drove the actress into depression for a long time. She decided to take an unprecedented step: she told the story of her terrible marriage to a journalist. Alas, the discussion of Aman’s troubles at every corner turned into a new tragedy: her mother died from anxiety.
Only after ten years of inactivity did Zinat return to filming. In total, she has nearly eighty paintings to her credit. The son, having matured, apologized to her, and they made peace. One of her last roles was in the scandalous film about Indian gays “I Don’t Know Why,” after which the parents of one of the actors tried through the court to get recognition that their son was no longer their son.
Personal life
Hema Malini's husband is Indian film actor, producer and politician Dharam Singh Deol, better known as Dharmendra.
Hema Malini
The love story of actors has been discussed, condemned and admired for many years now. At the time of their meeting back in 1970, Dharmendra was already married and 13 years older than his lover, but he managed to win the girl’s heart. Their relationship wasn't perfect, but that's what happens when life brings two attractive and famous people together.
Their families were against such a union. Hema's father took a particularly tough line. For him, his daughter’s relationship with a married man was shameful. But as they say, love is blind. The couple continued to meet, despite the fact that everyone around them condemned them, and the yellow press constantly published disgusting fictitious details of their affair. This continued until the day Hema's mother decided to take matters into her own hands. She invited her daughter to marry one of the popular Indian film actors, Jitendra. Hema and Jitendra got along well with each other, and the parents’ choice fell in his direction, especially since the family of the potential groom also supported this union. Nobody took the feelings of the young people into account, and things were already moving towards the wedding. However, Dharmendra, having learned about the upcoming marriage, burst into Hema’s house in a state of intoxication... and then everything was like in an Indian movie: angry parents, an enraged would-be groom, a shocked Hema and a determined and emotional Dharmendra.
The reason for the parents' dissatisfaction with the girl's choice was that the man was officially married to Prakash Kaur and the couple had two children. The wife did not agree to the divorce, so the lovers converted to Islam in order to formalize the marriage in 1980 after the death of Hema’s father. At that time, Dharmendra was 44 years old and Hema was 29 years old. Moreover, the groom’s eldest son was 24! But neither age, nor the resistance of families, nor the condemnation of society prevented them from becoming a strong family and parents of two charming daughters. Today, 38 years later, they are happily married and conduct joint political activities, refuting the assertion that over time feelings dull and people grow cold towards each other.
Hema Malini and her husband
The couple has two daughters: Bollywood actress Esha Deol (born 1981) and assistant director Ahana Deol (born 1985).
Since 2020, Hema Malini is a happy grandmother.
Dharmendra and his first wife Prakash have two sons. These are popular Indian film actors Sunny and Bobby Deol.
Biography of Dharmendra
The Deol family belonged to the movement of “true Vedic Hinduism” - the Arya Samaj, although the surname indicates that they are Sikhs. The father was a school teacher, very strict morals reigned in the family, the boy was not allowed any entertainment outside the home. But at the age of 14, Dharam finally went to the cinema and was completely fascinated by what he saw:
“Cinema has interested me since childhood. I remember going to theaters to watch films of my idols Motilal and Dilip Kumar. Watching their performance, I also dreamed of becoming an actor."
Since then, Dharam's dream of becoming an actor began. However, his parents decided for him: at the age of 19, he married Prakash Kaur and began working as a driller in an American company.
Dharam would have remained an unknown hard worker, but he was lucky: Filmfare magazine organized a competition for young talents, and he was noticed.
Famous producer Arjun Hingorani invited Dharam to play the role of Ashok in the film “Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere” (“Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere”), which was released in 1960 without much success.
Dharmendra with Arjun Hingorani
And in this film, the actor's name was listed as Dharmender in the credits. Thus Dharam Singh Deol became Dharmendra. The future Bollywood star filmed for 50 rupees and breakfast of tea and bread. The film marked a turning point in the actor’s biography; from that moment he began acting in films. Dharmendra recalls working with Arjun Hingorani in one of his interviews:
“He was a patient and hard-working director who relied on my talent and gave me the opportunity to perfect scenes, even if multiple takes were required.”
In the early 60s, Dharmendra took on the most minor roles, starring in the films “The Prisoner”, “The Irony of Fate”, “Reality”, “Shadows”, “Mother’s Love” and others.
Meena Kumari
The actor’s popularity grew, he often starred with Meena Kumari (they have 7 films together, among which the most famous is “The Flower and the Stone”), with whom they had a romantic relationship, although Dharam was married.
The 70-80s were marked by a rise in popularity in Dharmendra’s creative biography: “Zita and Gita”, “Revenge and the Law”, “My name is Clown”, “Beloved Raja”, “King of the Jungle”, “The Eternal Tale of Love”, “Like the Three Musketeers” ", "The Adventures of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" - who in the USSR from the generation of 40-70 did not watch these films?
And the fairy tale about Ali Baba was generally a Russian-Indian project; in the USSR in 1980, the film was watched by 52.8 million viewers.
Still from the film "Ali Baba..."
The leading actors Dharmendra and Hema Malini came to Moscow, where they were simply fascinated by how well the Soviet audience knew and loved them, how warmly they were received in this cold country. Hema Malini recalled:
“Together with my husband, in 1979, we starred in the film “The Adventures of Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves,” where Dharmendra played Ali Baba, and I played Margina. It was an unforgettable time when we got to know better and fell in love with Russian culture. During my career, I have starred in 200 films, 25 of them with my husband, but in Russia they call me Zita or Gita.”
Zita and Gita
In general, the duet of Dharmendra and Hema Malini was one of the brightest, most successful in Bollywood, perhaps because the actors were connected by a deep and strong love, to which they are faithful to this day.
This is Love
Bollywood scripts very often reflect the struggle of ordinary people against injustice and corruption; here the popular heroes are the so-called noble robbers or people who embarked on the path of crime after encountering corruption, meanness, cruelty, forced to defend themselves and their loved ones.
Jarmendra often plays such heroes (“The Avengers”, “I swear by the memory of my husband”, “Imminent Reckoning”, “The Reign of Tyranny” and others). He does well in the roles of police officers fighting against corruption, and Dharmendra is also an excellent comedian.
At the award ceremony
The versatility of his roles, played with equal skill in three hundred films, is a testament to the Padma Bhushan he has received, the third highest civilian award in India, and a number of other awards for his contribution to Indian cinema.
