Alena Yakovleva: Mikhail Kozakov does not recognize his own granddaughter

Biography

Kirill Kozakov was born into a famous, multinational, creative family. His father, the famous actor and director Mikhail Kozakov, came from an educated Jewish-Greek dynasty. Mom, Greta Taar, was Estonian and worked as a costume designer at Mosfilm. Kirill was brought up together with his sister Ekaterina, who later became a philologist.

When the boy was three years old, his parents separated. The children stayed with their mother. Of course, the boy grew up behind the scenes, surrounded by talented people. From his father he inherited the gift of acting and a great love for literature. However, after graduating from school, I did not intend to become an artist. Fate itself determined this path for him.

In an interview, Kirill admitted: “I dreamed of being a cameraman. I took a lot of photographs, studied with an artist, and was planning to enter the camera department at VGIK or the production department at the Moscow Art Theater School.

But it happened so... You see, the decision to try my hand at a competition for the acting department arose spontaneously. One day I came to the studio school and heard tours going on there. I didn’t really like the way some of the applicants read it. I just went and read it the way I saw it then. It so happened that I went through all the rounds at several theater universities. As a result, I entered a course with Viktor Ivanovich Korshunov (teacher at the VTU named after M. S. Shchepkin). And I’m very happy about it. True, my father was then categorically against my entering the acting department. We didn’t talk to him for two years after that.”

Biography of actor Kirill Kozakov

Kirill Kozakov was born into the family of the famous Soviet and Russian actor Mikhail Kozakov and costume designer of the Central Television Greta Taar, in early November 1962. Soon after the birth of his son, according to some sources a year later, according to others after three, the family broke up, but the boy did not lose his father. Mikhail Mikhailovich took an active part in the upbringing of Kirill and his sister, trying to instill in children a love of beauty - classical literature, theater. However, the plans of the son of a famous actor at that time did not include a career as an actor.

After graduating from school, Kirill was in no hurry to enter a university; he tried many simple working professions - from a concrete paver to a postman and even a baker. Then fate brought him to art, but from a different side. For some time, future actor Kirill Kozakov worked as a lighting technician at one of the film studios.

Even having decided to enroll in a specialized university, Kirill hesitated. Initially, he decided to study at the directing department of the Moscow Art Theater School, but changed his mind during the entrance exams and became a student in the Slivers acting department. Kirill Kozakov studied the art of acting at the course of Viktor Korshunov.

Theater

In 1984, Kirill Kozakov graduated from college and entered service in the Russian Army Theater. After working for two seasons, he moved to the Moscow New Drama Theater. A few years later he became an actor at the theater on Malaya Bronnaya, in whose troupe he was until 2002.

THEATER WORKS

Theater on Malaya Bronnaya:

  • Clitander - “Georges Dandin, or the Fooled Husband”, J.-B. Moliere;
  • Inventor - “King, Queen, Jack”, V. Nabokov;
  • Fokin, Massine - “Nijinsky”, G. Blumstein;
  • Shenom Jr. - “Lulu”, F. Wedekind.

Later, the artist appeared on stage mainly in private performances. About one of them, the most significant in his work, he said: “In the play “Nameless Star” I play the role that my dad once played in the film of the same name. He, as you remember, directed this film. A few years ago, the director of this play, Olga Anokhina, called me and asked if I would like to play the role of Grieg. When such material is offered, it’s a sin to refuse!”

Cinema

Along with his theatrical career, the actor’s rapid ascent to the cinematic Olympus began. In the mid-90s, he played Peter II in the historical film Mikhailo Lomonosov by Alexander Proshkin. He also starred in his father’s television plays: scenes from M. Lermontov’s tragedy “Masquerade” and “Faust” by I.-V. Goethe translated by Boris Pasternak.

"Countess de Monsoreau"

In 1997, the star role of Kirill Kozakov took place. Director Vladimir Popkov invited the actor to the historical film “The Countess de Monsoreau”, based on the novel of the same name by Alexandre Dumas. An artist with an aristocratic appearance, who has repeatedly played high-ranking nobles, this time played the Duke of Anjou.

The film takes place in the second half of the 16th century in Paris. In France, there is a power struggle between King Henry III (Eugene Dvorzhetsky) and his brother the Duke of Anjou. Fascinating court intrigues are intertwined with a touching and passionate love story between the beautiful Diana (Gabriela Mariani) and the ardent Count De Bussy (Alexander Domogarov).

Thanks to the adventurous plot, excellent performances by young talented actors, exciting fights and an unexpected ending, the project has become one of the most popular Russian television series.

Director Vladimir Popkov says about working on the film: “I always need an internal reference point that the viewer may not catch. Once it is found, everything else is a matter of technique. In this case, I understood why Bussy and Monsoreau died: they are “superfluous” people. Bussy is the last knight of France, and Monsoreau is the first bourgeois, a property owner born before his time. Diana turned out to be like an angel of death, hastening their death. It seems to me that the film has a social meaning. That's why we have such cool love scenes. A lot of footage was shot before I came up with this idea. I had no other choice."

Three years later, the actor’s filmography added another historical figure. He played the famous political figure and revolutionary Yakov Sverdlov in Gleb Panfilov’s biographical film “The Romanovs. Crowned family."

Then Andrei Rostotsky invited the artist to play the main role in the military adventure film “My Border”. Elena Tsyplakova’s soap opera “Carmelita,” popular in those years, could not do without his participation. Gypsy passion." Here Kirill Kozakov acted as the father of the leading heroine of the series, Khitana, who in turn was played by his daughter Maria.

"Russian chocolate"

In 2010, Daria Poltoratskaya’s melodrama “Russian Chocolate” was released with the actor in one of the main roles.

In the story, the owner of the bakery, Matvey Pakhomov, has long and firmly occupied the position of the unofficial “father” of the small provincial town of Spassk. Life there flows quietly and calmly. And although the crisis has made the situation in Spassk difficult, Pakhomov is always ready to help his fellow countrymen.

But one fine day the Koltsov family arrives from Moscow. They open the Russian Chocolate cafe in the city, and the calm flow of life in Spassk is disrupted once and for all.

The head of the family, Leonid Koltsov, was presented in the film by Kirill Kozakov. The artist’s ensemble consisted of: Elena Obolenskaya, Andrey Sergeev, Vladimir Simonov, Dmitry Brusnikin.

"Fifth guard"

Unforgettable for all fans of the actor’s work was his role in the popular mystical detective story “The Fifth Watch.” The multi-part fairy tale film about the work of one very strange detective agency, where all employees have unique abilities, was shown on screens for four years.

While working on the project, the artist shared his thoughts: “In any work of art there is a struggle between good and evil. It’s just that in a fairy tale this struggle is more obvious. But in our time, good and evil have practically merged and become discolored. I want to emphasize: good is good, evil is evil. The text that was offered to me was smart and subtle. I hope that the script will continue to please you in the future. The text is generally the main thing.

The script has not been fully written, it is being created in parallel with the broadcast. And this provides a unique opportunity to change, modify, improve something. Well, and, of course, the fact that the film is directed by Vasily Pichul also influenced my decision to star in the series. Moreover, I have experience working in such long-term projects, and various ones - in addition to acting, I worked as a casting director for several years.”

The actor said about his character, the head of the agency, the vampire Felix, and the storyline: “Felix did not want to live after certain events. He fell in love, but his beloved died. He turns to higher powers with a request to give him death. They tell him: “We can only offer you dreamless sleep.” He says: “Yes, it’s almost like death!” And he agrees. But after 500 years he is awakened, and he finds himself in our reality. Since he is connected with higher powers, his adaptation takes place instantly. And all sorts of investigations begin... But his personal theme, which was then, 500 years ago, also remains.

My hero is first and foremost a detective leading an investigation. And by what methods, vampire or deductive, it’s no longer so important. If he changes, if he thinks not only about how to find the next criminal, but also about how he can live with his abilities! “Then it will be interesting to follow him.”

"Calculator"

While working on The Fifth Guardian, Kirill Kozakov accepted an offer to play the role of captain in another science fiction film, The Calculator by Dmitry Grachev.

Plot: Ten prisoners sentenced to lifelong exile from planet XT-59 embark on a dangerous journey through the Sargasso Swamp. The group is immediately divided into two parts: Erwin (Evgeny Mironov) and Christy (Anna Chipovskaya) go in search of the Happy Islands, Yust (Vinnie Jones) leads the rest to the Rotten Shoal. However, for a long time their routes practically coincide.

On the very first evening, Erwin realizes that he must be killed - in his previous life he held too high a position, and now he is dangerous for those who have come to power. Having chosen Christy as a travel companion, he immediately tries to get away from the rest of the group in order to protect himself. On the way to the Happy Islands, the heroes overcome a lot of obstacles. The price for this is freedom and happiness.

It is noteworthy that the film was shot in record time - in just 22 days, seventeen of which the group spent in Iceland. And for it, the creators specially developed a written language that was used by the inhabitants of the planet XT-59.

Later, the actor had the opportunity to play the roles of: Colonel in Stanislav Dremov’s crime series “Son of My Father”, Shaman in Ivan Kordzaia’s mystical film “For Mysterious Passion”. Here he played his father in his youth, filmed with virtually no makeup - the inherited portrait resemblance to Mikhail Kozakov helped.

Another major project - the historical film by Alexey Andrianov “Sofia” - added a new interesting role to the actor’s treasury - Legate.

"Torgsin"

One of Kirill Kozakov’s most recent works in cinema is the psychiatrist-hypnotist Konstantin Grigoryevich Berkovich in Dmitry Petrun’s crime drama “Torgsin”.

The series premiered in 2020 on the Rossiya TV channel. The action takes place in Moscow in the 30s of the last century. This is a time of great construction and great hopes. The Dneproges, Uralmash, Magnitka, Chelyabinsk Tractor, Moscow and Gorky Automobile Plants are built almost by hand. There is an urgent need to purchase equipment abroad, but where can we get gold and currency for industrialization?

For these purposes, Torgsins—“shops for trading with foreigners”—are operating throughout the country—oases of prosperity and abundance that Soviet people have not seen since pre-revolutionary times.

Lida Sokolskaya (Alexandra Bortich) is a girl with an excellent command of several foreign languages. Together with her brother Alexey (Aleksey Demidov), a specialist in precious stones and an employee of the Academy of Sciences, she moves from Leningrad to Moscow.

During the move, they find an old emerald pendant in their deceased father's belongings. Lida hopes to find out the history of this pendant, so she goes with it to Torgsin. There she meets the store director Viktor Serebrov (Grigory Antipenko).

Victor has to regularly and without pay carry out special orders from the chairman of the board Torgsin Yarovoy (Alexander Nosik), his friend, with whom he went through the entire civil war side by side. At the same time, Yarovoy does not suspect that his wife Anna (Ekaterina Klimova), an actress and socialite, is Victor’s mistress. Serebrov is burdened by his boss’s requests and his connection with Anna. But everything changes with the advent of Lida.

In total, the actor has more than fifty film roles. Also, at different times, he took part in the dubbing of comedies: “Love-Carrot 3” by Sergei Ginzburg and “220 Volts of Love” by Vladimir Filimonov. And in 2010 he acted as director and screenwriter of the film “Rehearsal for a Benefit Performance” based on the works of Chekhov, Moliere, Griboedov and Rostand. Kirill Kozakov staged this television one-man show especially for his father.

Personal life

The actor was married several times. From his first marriage to Yulia, he has a son, Anton, who now lives in New Jersey.

Kirill’s second wife was Alena Yakovleva, the daughter of the outstanding actor Yuri Yakovlev. Their love culminated in the birth of Masha. But as soon as the girl was four months old, the couple separated. For almost 14 years, father and daughter practically did not communicate, but then their relationship improved. Maria grew up and followed in the footsteps of her parents, also becoming an actress.

Kirill Kozakov’s third official marriage was registered with the daughter of screenwriter Yuri Ryashentsev, Maria Shengelaya.

The actor says about his life partners: “There were three marriages. Indeed, I am interested in the women who have been in my life. I am very grateful to them, we have good relations with everyone. I am interested in smart and, of course, beautiful ones. They are really beautiful for me... Because beauty always comes from within.”

Interview

About the surname

“There is an opinion that someone always somehow promotes and helps representatives of famous acting dynasties. During my student years, this bothered me, and I think Masha (daughter) did too. But when you start working, only your abilities and hard work matter; it’s just that no one gives you roles or films based on your last name. And the surname is more of a responsibility, but not a help or a hindrance.”

About signs

“I don’t believe in omens. There is, of course, something very simple that has lived with us since childhood. Let’s say a black cat crosses the road, and you automatically pay attention to it... But I can’t take it seriously.”

About the profession

“Art is the result. And in order to get results, you have to work. Our profession is not to receive prizes and titles. Creativity is a wonderful thing, but what we have here is not a creative workshop, but production. Of course, with elements of creativity. But, first of all, this is a normal job, like any other that people go to every day.”

“When deciding whether to agree or not to this or that role, I am guided not by intuition, but by the material after all. Another thing is that the project does not always continue in the same way as you feel it at the very beginning. In any work, you can’t just rely on circumstances and go with the proposed flow; a lot depends on yourself and, of course, on interaction with the director.”

“I’m interested in justifying the scoundrels I played. They say to me: “You have made a magnificent scoundrel!” Yes, because you justify it. This justification contributes to the appearance of depth in the image. These are the basics of theater school: if you play a negative character, look for positive qualities in him, if you play a positive character, vice versa.”

“You know, as a rule, most accomplished artists worked in the theater. Theater gives a lot: contact with a partner, understanding of the audience's reaction. This is more meticulous work than in the movies. After all, in cinema, especially now, very little time is given for rehearsals. And your acting mechanism, your system should already be built and debugged. This can only be done in the theater.”

“Sometimes you have to take breaks. To think whether you are going there, whether you are going in the right direction. It is very important! Our profession is, of course, creativity. But to a greater extent this is a craft, and the viewer should not have the opportunity to undermine or find fault. There should be no lies. And to master a craft, you need to be in shape, you need to work constantly.”

Kirill Kozakov: My daughter is very lucky with her relatives!

For two seasons now, a representative of the famous acting dynasty has appeared before viewers in the series “Fifth Watch” on the TV-3 channel in the image of the vampire Felix, who founded a detective agency in a certain Russian town. The fusion of a mystical thriller with crime puzzles is loved by viewers who are looking forward to the latest episodes of “The Fifth Watch.”

“In the third season, a new hero will appear, and in connection with this, a new storyline will arise, which will be directly related to Felix,” Kirill Kozakov reveals script secrets. — My hero’s family secrets, which the audience didn’t even suspect, will become known. Felix's past will come to the fore, dark pages of his biography will emerge. We will learn something about his relatives, new details of his old love story will become known. And the relationship between Felix and Ulyana, already complex and confusing, will become even more intense and dramatic.

In general, the new season of “The Fifth Watch” is such a cocktail of mysteries, family secrets and love passions.

Representatives of the great acting dynasty are Kirill Kozakov and his daughter Maria.

“I don’t believe in omens”

— How much has your life changed after you started playing in this series? How do people react when they meet you on the street?

— Quite often they find out, many say something nice, and wonder what will happen to Felix next. Even among the theater audience there are people who watch “Fifth Watch.” And they also ask how the plot will develop, what it was like to act in this role, how it influenced me...

— And how, by the way, did it influence? To what extent did you, so to speak, dissolve in this role?

- No, no, I don’t feel like a vampire, I remain in reality. It's still a fairy tale! It’s just that in almost every fairy tale questions arise that concern everyone: what is love, what is the understanding of time, what era do we live in, what problems exist now?

Photo: Ivan VISLOV

The most important thing for me is that my character develops! It is important for me that the hero does not exist separately, but lives in the plot, but with his own problems. If the development line of my hero emerges clearly enough, then the viewer will also be interested. And as an actor, I will have something to play. Because when a character does not change, when he has no questions and doubts, nothing happens to his inner world, why talk about him at all?

My character has a wealth of experience in this regard—more than 500 years of life. And he lives on, something must worry him! So how can Felix be brought back from some kind of detached existence? He, of course, is also an investigator, solving crimes using very specific methods. But there must be something else! And this is something, it seems to me, indicated in the script for the new episodes.

The artist successfully combines filming in TV series and feature films with work in the theater. Photo: Ivan VISLOV

—Are you a superstitious person? Mysticism, various signs - how much of this is in your life?

- I'm not superstitious. Otherwise, how could I, following the script of “Fifth Watch,” lie in a coffin? And I was lying there! A superstitious person would consider this a bad omen... I, of course, do not claim that mysticism and everything else is fiction. Anything is possible! My character has the ability to do incredible things, some people have such abilities. And others, not possessing these abilities, call it fantasy or mysticism. But it is possible that what now seems fantastic to us will become quite real and possible. I repeat: “The Fifth Watch” is a fairy tale! Remember what happened in other fairy tales. There was, for example, a flying carpet. And then the planes appeared. And this, I'm sure, is not the only example.

I don't believe in omens. There is, of course, something very simple that has lived with us since childhood. Let’s say a black cat crosses the road, and you automatically pay attention to it... But I can’t take it seriously.

— Many will probably agree with you. But why then are viewers so drawn to mystical works?

— People are always drawn to the unknown! It is completely natural for a person to want to learn something new. Of course, you shouldn’t completely immerse yourself in mysticism, explain everything that happens as something supernatural and forget about everything else. But if through interest in the unusual and mysterious we try to understand universal human values, then this is already good. This genre may not provide answers to all questions, but at least it stimulates the imagination. And this, in turn, helps us develop.

In the new season of “Fifth Watch” we will learn new details of the biography of the mysterious Felix. Photo: TV-3 channel

“I have no influence on Masha’s career”

— Viewers watch not only “The Fifth Guardian,” but also the films in which your daughter, actress Maria Kozakova, stars. How are you involved in her career, how do you influence her?

— Masha is already a fairly independent person and makes her own decisions. Of course, I always rejoice at her victories and successes. And I get upset when things don’t work out. Of course, we discuss a lot with her, consult with each other. In general, everything happens like any normal people. I can't say that I have any influence on her career.

- But are you happy with the way it’s turning out?

“It seems to me that Masha does her job with dignity and, of course, has the right to be in this profession. I’m very glad that everything is going well for her. By the way, I almost said - pah-pah! This is about the question of all sorts of superstitions...

— Do you think her big name hinders her or helps her?

- You know, I was often asked if my big name bothers ME, so I answered similar questions many times. Therefore, I will try to answer for Masha. There is an opinion that someone always promotes and helps representatives of famous acting dynasties. During my student years this bothered me, and I think Masha did too. But when you start working, only your abilities and hard work matter; it’s just that no one gives you roles or films based on your last name. Unlike many of her peers, Masha learned a lot about the profession from her grandfather, the great actor Yuri Vasilyevich Yakovlev, from her mother, actress Alena Yakovleva, and from me too. And when Masha entered the theater institute, she went to another grandfather, Mikhail Mikhailovich Kozakov, and read passages to him, and he gave advice and supported. Masha, however, is very lucky with her relatives. And the surname is more of a responsibility, but not a help or a hindrance...

And who said that vampires are not reflected in the mirror? Photo: Ivan VISLOV

— Which roles of Masha do you especially remember?

— The first jobs are always very important. For example, a fantasy story called "Aziris Nuna." I was very pleased that Masha worked there with my friend Sasha Lazarev, with Nonna Grishaeva. It was a good experience for her. I’m glad that Masha has enough intelligence and self-irony to treat this and other work that happened even before entering the institute, objectively, she sees her shortcomings and mistakes. These jobs gave her the opportunity to enter a profession that she liked. And this, of course, is memorable.

In fact, what matters to me is not just how she played in a particular film, but how she grows from role to role. Of course, I want variety, so that she is offered interesting scenarios. I would like Masha to be found by a director who will see in her not only what she has already been able to show, but also something new.

And one more important point - sometimes you need to take breaks. To think whether you are going there, whether you are going in the right direction. It is very important! Our profession is, of course, creativity. But to a greater extent this is a craft, and the viewer should not have the opportunity to undermine or find fault. There should be no lies! And to master a craft, you need to be in shape, you need to work constantly.

- And then what about the breaks you talked about? How to keep fit?

- But that’s what the theater is for! There you test yourself and your skills every or almost every evening during the performance. And I am very glad that Masha works in the theater. Even in small roles you can test your skills.

“Even adults believe a little in magic”

— By the way, how does Masha evaluate your work in “The Fifth Guard”?

“She, of course, watched the series, she liked some of it, and some she didn’t. This is fine!

“She probably should have been hooked by the vampire plot, which is so popular among young people now...

- This is absolutely true! This series is basically for young people! Although I do not exclude that this film can be interesting to people at any age. Even adults, I think, believe in magic a little. For example, I enjoy watching old fairy tale films. And now very few children’s films are made, but once upon a time it was different. The best actors worked in it. Now, I’m sure many artists, including myself, would gladly agree to play in a film for children.

— Didn’t you want to star in the same film with your daughter?

“We already filmed together once—it was in Carmelita.” The director of the film, Elena Tsyplakova, asked me to play the heroine’s deceased father. And, of course, I happily agreed to be with Masha in the frame. But it was only a tiny episode, and I would like to play something more serious.

— Why don’t you work together in the new season of “Fifth Watch”?

- It’s not up to us to decide, the series has producers, writers, directors. And I assure you, they are well aware of the existence of Maria Kozakova. Of course, I would love to do Fifth Watch with her. But we must also take into account the fact that she now has an incredibly busy schedule, she works a lot. Perhaps this also influences the fact that so far our joint appearance in “The Fifth Watch” has not happened.

— What else, besides “Fifth Watch,” are you working on now?

— I have a theater project - in the play “Nameless Star” I play the role that my dad once played in the film of the same name. He, as you remember, directed this film. A few years ago, the director of this play, Olga Anokhina, called me and asked if I would like to play the role of Grieg. When such material is offered, it’s a sin to refuse!

Currently I’m filming the film “Lord of Time” directed by Alexander Barshak. I really enjoy working with Sasha. Dad spoke of him as “the most intelligent of the young.” This is a full-length science fiction film in which I play a certain Curator, who is in charge of people who, thanks to certain scientific discoveries, have traveled back in time. A wonderful artist Andrei Smolyakov is filming with me, as well as several young talented actors. They are being thrown back into the past.

Felix from “Fifth Watch” was lucky; he understands almost everything about the past. But the mysteries of the present have to be guessed every day, just like all of us.

The best film roles of actor Kirill Kozakov

Kirill Kozakov performed his first full-fledged film role in the film “Mikhailo Lomonosov” (1984) directed by Alexander Proshkin. It was a historical biography film. Kirill Kozakov was entrusted with the role of Emperor Peter II. It was small, but significant both for the plot and for the film as a whole, and Kozakov Jr. did not let the director down, he performed it vividly, the image of his hero was full of colors and feelings.

But another work brought him the love of the audience and fame. In 1997, the film “The Countess de Monsoreau” was released, where Kirill Kozakov played the role of Francois, Duke of Anjou. It was in this movie that the actor was able to show his talent in all its facets and confirm that he is worthy of the name of his legendary father.

In the list of the best film roles of actor Kirill Kozakov, both critics and viewers include his works such as

  • Platon Zubov from “Assa”,
