Chris Pine: on masculinity, books and theater

Chris Pine: biography and general information

Of course, the biographical information of the young actor is of interest to many.
Chris Pine (full name Christopher Whitelaw) was born on August 26, 1980 in the state of California, namely in Los Angeles. Many fans believe that acting is in Chris's genes. And these people are not wrong. For example, the mother of a young man, Gwynne Gilford, at one time often starred in small TV series - only later she retrained and today works as a psychotherapist. Chris's father Robert is also an actor who became famous throughout the country for his role as Sergeant Joseph Getreher in the popular television series California Highway Patrol. By the way, Chris’s grandmother also had a stage career. Anna Gwynne (Margarita Gwynne Trice) was quite popular in her time.

And although his parents did not achieve great success in their acting career, Chris decided on his profession as a child. Parents often recalled how the boy sat for hours at the TV, watching his favorite films until he memorized all the phrases.

Chris Pine graduated from Oakwood High School and then attended the University of California. In 2002, the guy received a bachelor's degree in English. By the way, for a year Chris studied in the UK - at the University of Leeds he studied English language and literature.

Chris Pine

Chris's parents would have been very surprised if their youngest son had not expressed a desire to connect his life with cinema, because Pine was born into a family of film actors.
His father, Robert Pine, played one of the main roles in the popular American TV series of the late 70s, California Highway Patrol. Mom, Gwyn Guilford, once appeared in episodes of low-budget soap operas. And my maternal grandmother, Anne Gwyn, was one of the first so-called queens of horror: in the 40s of the last century, she starred in horror films. Unfortunately, she did not live to see the triumph of her beloved grandson: Anne died ten years ago at the age of 85. Ironically, Gwyn was a big fan of William Shatner, the actor who played Captain James Tiberius Kirk in the early Star Trek films. “My grandmother adored Shatner, she could sit for hours in front of the TV screen and watch the series “TJ Hooker” with his participation. Of course, the old Star Trek was sometimes shown on TV. I wasn’t a fan, but I watched it if grandma asked,” Chris recalled in an interview. From early childhood, Pine dreamed of becoming an actor or musician. And despite the fact that the boy was terribly shy, excessive attention instantly made him blush. By the way, Chris is still struggling with this feature of his. When journalists or fans call him a sex symbol, the actor prefers to laugh it off or remain silent.

Seeing potential in their son, his parents sent him to one of the best private schools in the States, where there was also an amateur theater. Pine played it with great pleasure. After school, he entered the University of California at Berkeley to study English Language and Literature and at the same time took acting courses. In 2003, Chris finally took part in the filming: he played the role of a patient in one of the episodes of the super popular television series “Emergency”. A year later, he starred in Garry Marshall’s romantic comedy “The Princess Diaries 2: How to Become a Queen.” The blue-eyed young man made an indelible impression on the young people. Chris says that a few days after the release of the film, a little girl recognized him: “When she saw me, she started pointing her finger in my direction and shouting that I was “that guy from the movie about the princess”... I wanted to fall into the ground!”

Chris risked remaining an actor in romantic films “for girls” (such as the films “Kiss for Luck” and “Blind Date”), if not for the crime thriller Joe Carnahan “Smokin’ Aces”, in which Pine starred with Jeremy Piven, Ryan Reynolds and Ray Liotta. And already in 2008, Chris was cast in the role of the iconic character, Captain Kirk, in JJ Abrams' Star Trek. And, as the actor himself admits, it was then that his life turned 180 degrees.

Chris, you starred with Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana in the 2009 film Star Trek. Was it easier for you with each other this time? Yes, we managed to fall in love with each other. The grinding-in period is a thing of the past. Now we have no problems with mutual understanding. On set we were constantly joking and joking around, but it didn’t interfere with our work. The film is quite dark, there are a lot of action scenes, but there is also humor. Abrams has a flair for such things; he knows perfectly well when it is appropriate to dilute even the most tense and dramatic moment with a joke that would not look absurd. Benedict Cumberbatch also joined us. He is an amazing actor, very talented. With his appearance on set, the filming process became even more interesting.

Tell us about his role. Apparently he plays the hero - the antagonist of your James Tiberius Kirk? To some extent, yes. Benedict created a very complex, multi-layered character. His John Harrison is not a villain, not a scoundrel in the literal sense of the word, but rather a manipulator. Harrison is psychologically unstable, he poses a threat to all humanity. In addition, he sees the weaknesses of the members of the Enterprise, knows everything about their sore spots and puts pressure on them. In this way he manages to amuse his own vanity. And my hero is trying his best not to let him do this.

Can your Kirk do it? In the film, James Tiberius Kirk faces an insane amount of his own demons. In the first film, we showed him as a confident, daring young man with excellent intuition, a kind heart and a sincere desire to fight evil not only for himself and his own beliefs, but also for the sake of others. In "Retribution" his confidence evaporates somewhere. Benedict's character deftly reveals even the smallest cracks in Kirk's armor. And so we see James defeated, he is on his knees, overwhelmed by fears, and asks only one question: “Am I worthy to be a leader?”

This franchise has an insane amount of fans. Are you one of them? To be honest, I've never been a big Star Trek fan, I like Star Wars better. Star Trek fans may throw tomatoes at me, but I think Captain Kirk is reminiscent of Han Solo from Star Wars. I really like this. As for Kirk, we have much more in common than I could have imagined. I can say: I am incredibly glad that I was entrusted with the role of this iconic character who loves adventure and thrills.

Chris, do you know what it means to be a fan? Oh yeah! I once dreamed of becoming a baseball player. At one time, living in Los Angeles, I was a fan of the New York Yankees baseball club. I guess it's a tribute to my father, who grew up in the Big Apple City. I was a rabid fan of this sport until I admitted to myself that I was, in general, a mediocre player. It was around this time that I lost interest in baseball. ( Laughs.

)

I know that JJ thinks you are a very talented actor. He also says that you are overly demanding of yourself. He is right. It's hard to be a perfectionist. You believe that there is only one perfect way to do something well. But, as a rule, this ideal cannot be achieved. You can play your role perfectly - you just need to relax and forget about this notorious ideal, which I’m not quite able to do yet. But I'm learning. For me, a surefire way to fail is to watch myself on screen. In short, I am a complete Samoyed, my most important and severe critic.

Do I understand correctly that you don’t like watching films with your participation? There is a big difference between “looking at yourself” and “looking at what happened.” I like the latter. Sitting in the auditorium, I observe a whole universe populated by heroes, including the one I played. I follow this process appraisingly: I am interested in whether I managed to fit into history, whether I spoiled it with my appearance?

And what can you say about your work in the film “Star Trek: Into Darkness”? It wasn't easy to work. I can’t say that I’m a great guy. ( Laughs.

) But it seems to me that I still did a good job. Let's see what the viewer says this time.

How did Chris become an actor? First role in the TV series "Emergency"

As already mentioned, Chris always dreamed of an acting career. While still studying at the university, he regularly took part in theatrical productions. He has performed on stage several times during the Williamston Theater Festival, which is held in the Berkshire Hills. In addition, he worked from time to time in various theaters in Los Angeles.

The work of the young talented guy was noticed. At that time, the TV series "ER" was quite popular. It was there in 2003 that Chris Pine first appeared. The actor's filmography began with the small role of Levin. However, one episode of the cult medical series made critics notice a new talent.

The first successful films with the actor

Subsequently, Chris Pine began to receive new offers - first minor, and then more and more serious. Also in 2003, he played a cameo role as Lonnie Grandy in the TV series The Protector. The actor also played the role of Tommy Chandler in one of the episodes of CSI: Miami. In 2004, he starred in a short film.

Also in 2004, Chris Pine received his first leading role in the fairly popular romantic comedy The Princess Diaries: How to Become a Queen, where his partner was Anne Hathaway. Here the actor perfectly played the young, ambitious Nicholas, the heir to the throne, who unexpectedly falls in love with the princess.

Then other films with the participation of Chris Pine begin to appear. For example, in 2004, he starred in one of the episodes of the series “American Dreams.” In 2005, he appeared on the screens in the fairly popular project Six Feet Under - he got the role of young Sam. And in 2006, he appeared before the audience as Shawn in the film “The Surrender of Dorothy.”

And already in 2006, a comedy appeared, where Chris Pine played the main role. The actor’s filmography was expanded with the film “A Kiss for Good Luck,” where he worked with Lindsay Lohan. Here he got the role of Jake Hardin, a guy who is haunted by failures everywhere. That same year, he appeared on screens as Denny, an extremely sociable and intelligent teenager who suffers from blindness but dreams of true love.

In 2007, the actor had the opportunity to show a different side of himself, leaving behind the image of a romantic hero. He played a neo-Nazi punk in the crime thriller Smokin' Aces. And in 2008, he got the role of Beau Barrett in the film “Bottle Blow.”

Christopher was born in Los Angeles on August 26, 1980. His passion for cinema is quite natural: the guy grew up in a family related to art. Star Trek and worldwide popularity

In 2009, the eleventh part of the famous film called “Star Trek” premiered.
And the actor got one of the main roles here - he appeared before the audience in the image of James Tiberius Kirk. Naturally, in the United States, Chris Pine was quite famous and popular at that time. But his work in Star Trek made him famous throughout the world. By the way, it was this film that became the most successful and profitable. In addition, the film received a lot of positive reviews from famous critics. Chris's work was also highly appreciated, which took his career to a whole new level. The film was nominated for an Oscar in four categories at once, but received the award for best makeup.

The film “Carriers” is another popular film with Chris

In 2009, a thriller called “Carriers” was released.
Its plot tells the story of a population that has been struck by a deadly type of virus. At the center of the events are four teenagers who are trying to get to a safe place and wait out the period of active infection. Here Chris Pine played Brian, one of the brothers trying to escape from a dangerous virus. The actor himself has said more than once that the role in this film was not easy, but truly worthwhile. After all, there are practically no special effects in the film; the actors had to demonstrate the horror of the situation solely through acting.

Chris Pine films

Pine got his first small role in the cult TV series ER in 2003, and in the same year he appeared in the equally famous show CSI: Miami. Chris's first major appearance on the big screen came in 2004, when he played Nicholas Deveraux in The Princess Diaries 2: The Queen, opposite Anne Hathaway. Audiences and critics warmly received this romantic comedy, and Pine received more job offers. In subsequent years, Chris played in such films as Kiss for Luck, Carriers, Blind Date and Smoking Aces.

Chris Pine - Star Trek

The big success for Chris Pine was the casting for the film “Star Trek”. He got the role of Captain Kirk, which made Pine famous throughout the world. Painting by J.J. Abrams was released in 2009 and collected good box office and critical acclaim. The film was not a prequel to the original '66 series, but was presented as an alternate history comic book adaptation. The second part of the saga, called “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” collected an even larger box office and received several Oscar nominations, as well as a prize for best makeup. Pine himself also received several film awards along with the entire cast. The third film in the Star Trek franchise is scheduled for release in 2020, and it seems that the success of the box office and the love of fans may ensure that the story continues endlessly.

Chris auditioned for the lead role in the film Green Lantern, but it ultimately went to Ryan Reynolds. It is worth noting that this film failed at the box office, so one might say the actor was lucky. Instead, he starred in the comedy This Means War, alongside Reese Witherspoon and Tom Hardy.

Chris Pine - Jack Ryan

In 2009, Chris Pine took on the role of CIA agent Jack Ryan, becoming the fourth actor in history to play this famous role. Before him, Ryan was played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck. ELLE Exclusive Interview: Chris Pine

Handsome Chris Pine's track record is filled with roles of brave heroes, spies and other alpha males. In the action movie Jack Ryan: Chaos Theory, based on the novel by Tom Clancy, he played a patriotic clerk who prevented the collapse of the American economy. By the way, Pine became the fourth actor to play the role of the “book” special agent after Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck (you must agree, it’s an honor to continue this series). The story with the CIA and various spy tricks could not be avoided in the rom-com “This Means War.” And the selfless Captain James Kirk from the remake of the cult saga “Star Trek” fell in love with both viewers and film critics. It’s clear why, at the interview on the occasion of the launch of the Armani Code Ice perfume, I expected to see a mountain of muscles, an icy gaze and iron self-confidence. It's good that I didn't guess. Chris was cheerful but not loud, erudite without being arrogant, and well-mannered like a Harvard senior. Agree, such a combination of qualities will conquer anyone.

ELLE To complete the image of a “hero of our time,” all you need is a role in a comic book.

CHRIS PINE (laughs). I'm not sure I'd look cool in tight tights. It must be quite a sight! Although, if the plot is good, why refuse the offer? But I would accept it only on one condition - I would like to fly. It's a shame that Superman has already been staked out.

ELLE Many actors make more serious sacrifices than tight tights. What are you ready for?

K.P. I definitely wouldn't lose weight like Matthew McConaughey did for Dallas Buyers Club. You probably need to be very deeply imbued with history to do this with your body. In any case, Matthew looks horribly unhealthy in this picture.

ELLE What other role would you reject?

K.P. Well, you definitely won't be seeing me in porn anytime soon! (Laughs.)

ELLE It's a pity, you have a great body! Do you spend a lot of time in the gym?

K.P. Enough, but not always of your own free will. An actor needs to stay in shape and take care of himself in every possible way. It’s not that I like to do it, but rather that I have to. In order not to die of boredom, I try to constantly change my sports regime. One day I swim, the next I do boxing, the third I do powerlifting or hiking. I also really love tennis and golf... watch. For me, this is incredible: you stand alone on a giant court or field, and millions of eyes are watching your every move. Scary! (Smiles.)

ELLE Do you have beauty rituals? Not a very brutal question, but today some men are not inferior to women in personal care.

K.P. Everything is standard for me. I wash my face and use argan oil from Morocco. It moisturizes the skin well after shaving. And I always use lots and lots of shampoo. Yes, I'm very clean! (Laughs.) But my best friend, for example, shaves without water. This is called "dry" shaving. I've watched him do this many times. I feel that I myself will never have enough courage for such a thing!

Chris Pine: personal life

Today, the famous actor does not yet have a permanent companion.
Naturally, a young, handsome and famous person does not suffer from attention deficit from the opposite sex. From time to time he is noticed with new passions. During his career, he met with actresses and models, not neglecting ordinary women. Several times the relationship almost reached marriage, but still ended. Chris Pine's girls explained the breakup by the complex character of the young man. But Pine’s friends do not share this opinion: in interviews they have repeatedly noted that Chris is a sociable and pleasant person. Nevertheless, Chris Pine's chosen one must be special and, of course, share his views on life and family. After all, the ideal for an actor is his own relatives. He dreams of a loving wife and at least three children.

Chris Pine's personal life

After the success of Star Trek, Chris Pine expectedly came under close attention from the tabloids. In 2009, the paparazzi declassified his affair with actress Olivia Munn. It is unknown whether the publicity affected their relationship, but two months later they broke up.

After this, the hero-lover went into all sorts of troubles: at various times he was spotted next to his Star Trek co-star Zoe Saldana, Lenny Kravitz’s daughter Zoe, actress Vale Bloom, model Audrina Patridge, former Miss Reykjavik Iris Bjork Johannesdottir.

Despite his companions changing like gloves, the actor was more than once suspected of homosexuality. But he denies such rumors, claiming that he dreams of a strong, large family, but has not yet met “the one.”
