Carlos Ray Norris was born on March 10, 1940 in Ryan, Oklahoma. Norris's father, an auto mechanic, was known for his addiction to alcohol. Chuck's grandfather was a purebred Irishman, and his mother came from the Cherokee Indian tribe. The most memorable impressions of the boy's childhood were poverty, lack of permanent residence, semi-impoverished life in a trailer with his mother and two younger brothers, and then the divorce of his parents and the new head of the family. Norris recalls that it was his stepfather George Knight who instilled in him a love of sports.
Growing up, in his free time Chuck worked as a loader. I dreamed of becoming a policeman. To fulfill his dream, immediately after graduating from school he enlisted in the Air Force and in 1959 was sent to South Korea. It was at the military base that they began to call him Chuck. By that time he was already married to his classmate Diana Holecek. The service, he said, was incredibly boring, so he took up sports, first joining the judo club, and then the Tansudo group. Three years later, by the time he left military service, he was already a black belt holder.
In 1963, Chuck Norris opened the first karate school, and a year later - the second. In 1965, he went to the Los Angeles All-Star Championship, where he became the winner. Norris liked acting in films. But after a spectacular debut, he received only one film offer - to play in the second-rate Hong Kong action film "San Francisco Massacre." Norris again played the role of a bad man, and the film itself was so unsuccessful that it was not released in the United States until 1981.
After talking with professional actors, Chuck realized how difficult acting is; I saw that acting is not just about showing off techniques and punches in front of the camera, that everything is much more complicated. Now he decided to study “to be an actor” from real professionals. Estella Harmon became his teacher in the acting class. The 34-year-old karateka was her oldest student. The period of study taught him a lot: he became much more relaxed in front of the camera, learned correct diction.
