Alexander Novikov: biography, personal life, creativity

Biography

Alexander Novikov was born and raised in a family of St. Petersburg intelligentsia. From an early age, his parents comprehensively developed the boy, in particular, they instilled in their son a love of theater. “I first encountered the art of Melpomene at the age of three,” recalls the actor. “It was then that my mother decided that it was time to introduce me to a production called “Unknown Man with a Tail” at the Bolshoi Puppet Theater.”

During his school years, the boy was sent to study music; he sang and played the drum quite well. Sasha graduated from a music school as an external student, majoring in percussion instruments, but did not want to continue his studies. He dreamed of becoming an actor, which was not at all part of his family’s plans.

When Alexander announced to his parents about his decision to enter the theater school, a flurry of indignation hit him: “There was a tragedy, it came down to hand-to-hand combat. I was destined for something completely different. Dad was a doctor, a gynecologist. And my family had radically opposite views of me: something close to this wonderful profession. And then suddenly - a theater institute. This is the same as if I said that tomorrow I will fly into space. Like a vaudeville act, a classic silent scene ensued, then everyone left, then they started taking action. But I turned out to be more stubborn and did not give up my positions. Although I cannot boast of an uncompromising grip on all other life issues, I have withstood all the battles here.”

Thus, having won the right to self-determination, the young man successfully passed the exams at the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography (now the Academy of Theater Arts) and entered the course of the famous Soviet actor and director Igor Vladimirov.

Already at the entrance exams, creative contact and mutual sympathy arose between teacher and student. In one of his interviews, the actor said: “Igor Petrovich didn’t let me read at the entrance; I only had time to say my name and the title of the fable when he started laughing. He probably thought I was funny. He recruited us with an attentive and loving eye, it seems to me, already knowing then who would remain in his theater.”

early years

We will begin to tell the biography of Alexander Novikov in 1953, when he was born on the island of Iturup in the Sakhalin region. The hero of our article grew up in the small military town of Burevestnik, since his father was a military pilot, and his mother did housework.

A few years later, changes came in the biography of Alexander Novikov and his family. The father was transferred to another duty station, the family moved to Bishkek on the territory of modern Kyrgyzstan. There Sasha went to first grade. But it was already produced in Sverdlovsk.

Theater

In 1990, after graduating from LGITMiK, the actor was accepted into the troupe of the theater. Lensovet, which was led by his favorite teacher. Later, Alexander shared: “For me, the decisive factor in entering the Lensovet Theater was not even the fact that I played on these stages as a student, but the personality of the master, his artistic policy, his human and creative principles, his energy.

I was lucky enough to play in several of Vladimirov’s performances: “The Players”, “Leopold the Cat’s Birthday”, “Baby”, “Doors Slam”. In “Carlson” he entrusted me with the role of Carlson after Ravikovich and Filatov.”

The theater became a home for the actor. On his stage, he played more than four dozen roles, trying on not only diverse human images, but also animals and fairy-tale characters.

The artist says about his characters: “Analyzing the gallery of images I created, I, to my great amazement, discovered that I had played a huge number of characters with four legs, a mustache and a tail. Among the animals whose images were created, along with the traditional dog and cat, there were also a lion and a raccoon, which was not at all easy. In the same company were two young men with difficult destinies - Prince Klaus and the thief Rulle, as well as two little-studied subjects - the Chieftain from The Snow Queen and Carlson.

In 2009, the actor played the role of Ivan Vasilyevich Lomov in Andrei Prikotenko’s play “Chekhov. Vaudeville". The author came up with a stage story based on short plays (“The Proposal”, “Anniversary” and “On the Harm of Tobacco”) by the outstanding playwright Anton Pavlovich Chekhov.

The artist about the performance: “This is the story of one disappointment. The story of a man who, at a fairly mature age (he is 35 years old in “The Proposal”), decided to get away from loneliness through marriage and build a happy life for himself.

My hero at the end of the play, at the monologue scene “On the dangers of tobacco,” represents the disintegration of the human personality: 33 years of marriage, seven children, an unloved, aged vixen wife...”

The play was a resounding success and brought the actor the Igor Ilyinsky prize “For Best Actor” at the IV All-Russian Festival “Russian Comedy” in Rostov-on-Don.

From time to time, Alexander Novikov tries himself on the stage of other theaters in St. Petersburg, but at the same time remains faithful to his native Leningrad City Council. “It’s difficult for me to be objective, and if I say that I love him very much, I won’t say anything,” the actor emphasizes. — It so happened historically that this is a boulevard theater. Confirmation of this is Pasi’s performance “Frederic, or the Boulevard of Crimes”: the material absolutely fell into its troupe, roughly speaking, who played the story about themselves. Our theater is accessible to the public, generally understandable, and speaks a very simple theatrical language.”

Education

As a teenager, Alexander already had a negative attitude towards the state system in the country. For example, he even refused to join the Komsomol, which is why he constantly had problems with teachers and the police. As a result, this fact became decisive when entering a university.

Although Novikov made three attempts: he tried out for the Sverdlovsk Mining Institute, then for the Ural Polytechnic and Forestry Institute, but to no avail. Soon he was expelled.

True, he was not very upset about this, because already at that time rock music occupied a large place in his life; it is safe to say that it had a significant influence on the biography of Alexander Novikov.

Cinema

The actor made his film debut in 1990 in the role of Beloglazov in Vitaly Melnikov’s historical drama “The Tsar’s Hunt” based on the play of the same name by Leonid Zorin. He starred in such multi-genre films as: the detective story “Memories of Sherlock Holmes” and the adventure film “Timur and His Commandos” directed by Igor Maslennikov; film adaptation of the popular fairy tale by Leonid Filatov “About Fedot the Archer”; historical drama “The Favorite” by Alexey Karelin; mystical thriller “Labyrinths of the Mind” by Victor Gonchar; melodrama “St. Petersburg Vacation” by Oleg Gaze and others.

However, most of all the actor likes to act in comedies. Among the most striking works in this genre: The non-drinking groom in Yuri Mamin’s film “Bitter!”; The second new Russian in the film about the heroes of the jokes “Vovochka” by Andrei Maksimkov; two roles at once, Teacher and Bandit, in the film about doubles “Purely in Life” by Vladimir Zaikin; Sokolov in “The True History of Lieutenant Rzhevsky” by Andrei Maksimkov.

The viewer is familiar with Alexander Novikov from such popular TV series as: “Streets of Broken Lanterns-4”, “Traffic Cops”, “Special Purpose Agent-3”, “PPS-2”, “One Day, One Night” and others.

"Secrecy of the investigation"

The actor became widely famous for his role as detective Fedya Kurochkin in Ilya Makarov’s detective story “Secrets of the Investigation” based on Elena Topilskaya’s novel “Dancing with the Cops.”

The artist shares his impressions of working in the project and his filming partners: “I have respect for this series in particular. The script's author, Elena Topilskaya, worked for a long time as an investigator on particularly important cases, so the script has a certain charm of complicity. What impresses him is the St. Petersburg lack of pretentiousness, he is strict, a little cold, but this is his peculiarity.

Only the first seasons of “Secrets” were filmed based on Topilskaya’s novels; a group of screenwriters has been working for quite some time, but all of us - the backbone of the acting group - have not cooled down to filming this project. Because the soul of the series was and remains Anna Kovalchuk, an amazing actress of our troupe. She and I played duet roles in many performances - brother and sister, lovers, husband and wife. It’s a pleasure to work with her, Anya has a great sense of humor and developed self-irony.”

Over the long years of the series’ existence, viewers began to involuntarily identify Alexander Novikov with his hero, but the actor himself does not see much similarity here: “Still, Fedya Kurochkin is not my other self.” But filming “Secrets of the Investigation” lasted for many years and continues, this is a big piece, a significant part of my life. And I take this work tenderly, warmly, very seriously.”

The actor's filmography already includes more than fifty films. He continues to star in the new season of “Secrets of the Investigation” and at the same time plays on the stage of the Theater. Lensovet.

Social activity

In 2010, Alexander Novikov was appointed artistic director of the Variety Theater in his native Yekaterinburg. First of all, the musician reviewed the repertoire and banned the production of “The Blue Puppy,” which was beloved by Ural theatergoers. The artist saw in the performance a hint of the theme of pedophilia, low-grade and bad taste of the artistic presentation of the material.

Alexander Novikov

In 2011, Novikov, together with opposition politician Alexei Navalny, called on residents of Yekaterinburg not to ignore the elections and to vote according to their conscience. There was even a video parody of the standard election advertisement “GOLO...SUY!” And in the summer of 2020, it became known that Alexander Vasilyevich was going to run for deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Sverdlovsk Region.

It is also worth noting that Novikov acted as a director of several documentaries - “I Just Got Out of the Cage”, “Gop-Stop Show” and “Remember, Girl?” The most popular was the biographical film “Oh, this Farian!” about the founder of the group “Boney M” Frank Farian. True, this picture was never shown on Russian television, although it was a success abroad.

Interview

About the theater

“I am madly in love with simple-minded theater and simple-minded heroes, for example, the deceived Molière simpletons about whom I dream. I hate obscure theater. I consider the highest manifestation of a director’s gift to be the ability to build a simple and understandable story, doing it easily and always with humor.”

“I hate theater that does not play on stage, and I am forever devoted to the theater where tears, passions, anger, despair and other wonderful things are the result of masterful acting, because the theater is such a strange place where true emotion can be incredibly false , and played with the height of grace and truth.”

“I think that theater today should stop, carefully look at where cinema and other forms of art are moving, remember this direction and confidently go in the absolutely opposite direction, without being afraid to stop any attempts to catch up with our wonderful life, attempts to correspond to it.”

“I admire those artists who take off the mask, and then there is another mask, and another, and under the last mask there is still a mask. Everything in the theater must be invented and unreal, only then will it be real.”

“I can hardly get more joy from anything in the theater than from partnering with a wonderful actress. Let my male partners forgive me, but for me the actress has always been the emotional center of the performance.”

“I value only one thing in partners - humor. A person who can make me laugh, including on stage, is always the object of my adoration and admiration. I consider a sense of humor to be the highest manifestation of an actor’s talent.”

About the profession

“There is a paradox: the absence of roles makes the artist a genius in his own eyes. And only being in demand is the only thing that allows an artist to really evaluate himself.”

“An artist must be able to play what he is given, remaining free within this lack of freedom, and it is your personal problem that you like it and are happy.”

“I hate “serious”, I’m allergic to it. I like to be close to the role, and not inside it. I don’t like it when an actor gets so into the role that you whisper to him: “Hey, the chandelier is falling,” but he doesn’t hear, he’s standing all wet from tension, the veins are strained in his neck - he’s in character. And then he lies there for three hours, unable to get up after the performance. In general, the absence of an artist’s visible effort on stage is a sign of aristocracy.”

About acting traits

“There is a saying among colleagues: if the sheets with a role fall, you need to sit on each one, otherwise the role will not happen. As an absent-minded person, I constantly drop sheets and am too lazy to believe in this sign. Even if something went wrong in the performance, the energy of loved ones can cover the most incredible flaws. That’s why I believe in good company on stage more than in omens.”

On the loose

Returning to freedom, he reissues the previous album. After its appearance on the shelves of music stores, the compositions “Eastern Street” and “Remember, Girl?..” immediately became real hits. He writes most of the songs himself, creating lyrics that his listeners love.

There are also several albums in Novikov’s work, the songs in which are written based on poems by other authors. For example, in 1997 the album “Sergei Yesenin” appeared, on which the poems of the Silver Age poet set to music became hits. Later, he repeated this experience, releasing another album based on Yesenin’s poems entitled “I Remember, Darling” and the album “Pineapples in Champagne”, which contained poems by various poets of the Silver Age.

Since the mid-90s, the musician regularly travels around the country with concerts and solo programs. Music from such performances is published in the form of separate albums. He already has 15 such disks.

During his creative career, Novikov was nominated for the Chanson of the Year award only 12 times, managing to win nine times.

Passion for chanson

Soon Alexander, unexpectedly for everyone, moved away from rock music and became seriously interested in chanson. In 1984, he released the popular album “Take Me, Cabbie,” which contained 18 songs. Abramov, Khomenko, Chekunov, Kuznetsov, Elizarov took part in the creation of the album. They recorded songs at night in the Sverdlovsky House of Culture. They were afraid that the authorities would get wind of it. According to Alexander’s recollections, they were not afraid of prison, they were only afraid that they would not be allowed to finish their work. The album broke all records in terms of circulation and popularity. Alexander Novikov became popular. His biography, however, from that moment turned away from the straight path.

Criminal case

Novikov has always been distinguished by a desire for independence and a desire to live according to his own principles, not imposed by anyone. He was never in the wake of Soviet power, often criticizing the existing order. As the musician himself said: “I am decisive and easy to act.” Of course, this attitude was expressed in creativity.

In the mid-80s, when there were no first Soviet entrepreneurs and co-operators, Alexander Novikov organized something like a company engaged in the manufacture of musical equipment. This caused a negative reaction from the authorities, as a result of which a criminal case was initiated. The musician was accused of manufacturing counterfeit products; he allegedly passed off his instruments as imported.

At the beginning of October 1984, the singer was detained right on the street and taken to the local police department. It is interesting that Novikov’s criminal case consisted of as many as 17 volumes, the first of which was devoted to the analysis of his musical material. Experts issued a disappointing verdict - the songs promote alcoholism, violence and prostitution, so the author needs psychiatric or prison isolation. In 1985, the Sverdlovsk Regional Court listened to these arguments and sentenced Alexander to 10 years in prison.

He served his sentence in the Northern Urals in the city of Ivdel. Considering his merits, Alexander was offered to work in the library, but he refused and, together with everyone else, went through the test of hard work, for which he earned the respect of crime authorities. Five years later, on the basis of a decree of the Supreme Council, Novikov will be released. Then the Supreme Court will overturn the verdict due to the lack of corpus delicti in the musician’s actions.

Family

All his fans are eager to find out about the biography, personal life, and children of Alexander Novikov. The hero of our article is married, his chosen one’s name is Maria. He met her during geodetic practice, when he was still studying at the geological institute.

When he ended up in prison, the woman did not turn away from him. She and her husband went through all the difficulties, now they have been together for more than forty years. So in the biography of Alexander Novikov, personal life played a big role. His wife did not allow him to give up and despair in difficult moments. When communicating with representatives of the media, Novikov often emphasized that he was grateful to his wife and did not want to change anything in his family.

Even during the dark periods of his biography, singer Alexander Novikov could always rely on his family. He and Maria had two children. Daughter Natalya became an art critic and designer, and son Igor is a professional photographer. Currently, the singer has already become a grandfather.

It is known that Novikov is a deeply religious person. However, he is not limited to visiting church and praying. In 1993, he, together with a bell maker from Uralsk, cast seven large bells, which he decorated with bas-reliefs of the kings of the Romanov family. This entire belfry was donated to the monastery, where it remains to this day. Here is everything that is known about the biography of singer Alexander Novikov, the personal life of the hero of our article.

The beginning of creativity

Alexander Novikov became interested in urban romances and rock music in the late 70s. The singer began his career by working in the restaurants “Malachite”, “Cosmos”, “Ural dumplings”. He created his own studio “Novik-Records” and the group “Rock Polygon”. With the latter he recorded his first album under the same name - “Rock Polygon”.

The creativity of rock musicians at that time was not approved by the authorities, so the group’s activities were not entirely legal. The musical equipment was produced by Novikov himself. In all respects, it was of better quality than the one that was commercially available and popular in the Soviet Union in the early 80s. The stereo made by Alexander was an analogue of a foreign one; musicians still use some equipment today.

Along with his active creative work, Alexander worked part-time at a sports club.

Ideal man

Novikov doesn’t mince words and tells it like it is. He does not hide the fact that he is critical of the activities of I. Krutoy, calling him a bribe-taker. He doesn’t like the humor of “Full House,” which, as the musician says, “is always below the belt.” The musician considers it an insult if his name is associated with domestic show business. “I don’t participate in the general pack, so I can say whatever I think,” says Alexander.

He adores S. Yesenin’s poems, calling them “soul-ripping,” and does not shy away from regularly visiting the grave of the Russian poet. One of the main characters of the Russian chanson, even in his 60s, calls himself a hooligan, a bandit and a robber. In the sense that it is easier for him to take away his wallet than to beg for alms. And when he sees hooligans offending the weak, he will first beat, and not call the police.

On the eve of his 50th birthday, Novikov renounced all regalia and titles, so today he only has the Order of St. Daniel of Moscow, awarded by the Patriarch. The musician is active in public life, heading the 400th Anniversary of the House of Romanov Foundation.

Creativity today

Novikov is a patriot of his homeland, he has gained love and recognition from his compatriots. He is the creator of a completely new original genre - modern urban romance. Considered an outstanding poet of the 20th century.

Alexander calls his best work the song “Remember, girl?” Every year he participates in the National Award “Chanson of the Year”, which takes place in the Kremlin.

Today Novikov, a singer, composer, musician, author and public figure, is the president of the Ural Foundation “400 Years of the House of Romanov,” which he headed in 2004. Since 2010, he has directed the Variety Theater, which is located in Yekaterinburg. It is interesting that his first order as artistic director was to withdraw the play “Blue Puppy” from the show, since he noticed clear signs of pedophilia and homosexuality in the script.

It’s not often that the composer and poet can be seen on screen, but he tours a lot, and he still loves his hometown of Yekaterinburg. Alexander Novikov sings only chanson, believing that his songs have a deep spiritual meaning. The musician is confident that he has chosen the right path and does not regret his incomplete higher education, believing that life itself has become the main university for him.

He classifies his lyrics as masculine lyrics and says that his songs can not be sung, but read like poetry. Alexander also believes: despite the fact that he has seen a lot in the zone, it is still possible and necessary to do without profanity in songs. He tries not to participate in disputes, but is always ready to fight back and stand up for himself and his loved ones. The musician is sure that his songs are about love and fidelity, and they are not at all connected with bunks, prison and gangs. Chanson will be loved and popular among the people as long as the Russian soul is alive.
