Svetlana Karpinskaya - biography, photo, personal life, filmography

Childhood

Svetlana Karpinskaya was born in Leningrad. Date of birth: September 16, 1937. Her parents were teachers. The relatives of his father, Alexei Blagoveshchensky, belonged to the church class. In the 30s they came under repression and were shot. After these tragic events, my father changed his last name and thus became Karpinsky. The family lived in a communal apartment on Vasilyevsky Island. The parents tried to give their daughter a good education and paid great attention to cultivating the right taste, both in the material and spiritual sense. After the end of the war, Svetlana was engaged in amateur performances and participated in various cultural events. When she was 16 years old, at one of the concerts the famous V. Shostak drew attention to the girl. Unexpectedly, she receives an offer from him to play one of the main roles in his play “The Factory Girl.” Svetlana liked being an artist, but she did not give up her dream of becoming a journalist. Therefore, after graduating from school, she enters the philological department of Leningrad University.

Childhood

On September 16, 1937, a girl was born into a family of Leningrad teachers who was named Svetochka. On my father’s side - Alexei Blagoveshchensky - relatives belonged to the church class. But the family was subjected to repression, many were shot. After this tragedy, Alexey decided to change his last name, becoming Karpinsky.

At that time, the family lived in an ordinary communal apartment located on Vasilyevsky Island. Mom and dad not only sought to ensure that their daughter received a good, decent education. A lot of time was devoted to ensuring that the girl was instilled with the right taste - spiritual and material.

After the terrible war ended, little Karpinskaya Svetlana Alekseevna devoted a lot of time to local amateur performances and often participated in cultural events.

First film appearance

Svetlana did not aspire to cinema, studying regularly at the university. But here His Majesty chance intervened. When Eldar Ryazanov was preparing to film the comedy “Girl Without an Address,” for some reason he was dissatisfied with the actress, who had already been cast in the leading role. Having accidentally seen Svetlana, he invites her to star in the role of Katya Ivanova. Either Ryazanov was so sure that Svetlana Karpinskaya was ideal for the role, or he was so unsatisfied with the previously approved person, but young Sveta, who had never acted in a movie, did not even audition. Be that as it may, the great Eldar Ryazanov was not mistaken in his choice. The premiere of the film “Girl Without an Address” instantly made Karpinskaya a celebrity. Her heroine Katya Ivanova - “a girl with no address, but with character” - fell in love with millions of moviegoers. It should be noted that in the film the artist not only coped well with playing the main role, but also proved herself to be a wonderful vocalist. Her performance in the film included the countess's aria, "Song about Moscow", as well as the song "I lived as a little girl and knew no worries."

KARPINSKAYA

Svetlana Alekseevna

Born in 1938, Leningrad

Honored Artist of Russia (1986) Knight of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, II degree

Childhood

Svetlana Karpinskaya was born into a family of teachers. Relatives from her father, Alexei Blagoveshchensky, were of the church class. In the 30s they were shot, and the father changed his last name, becoming Karpinsky.

The Karpinskys lived very modestly - in a communal apartment on Vasilyevsky Island. The actress recalls about that time: “Honest poverty. The house was beautiful - an old St. Petersburg house with a bay window and fireplaces. But, nevertheless, it is a communal apartment. It was impossible to get into the bath!”

Her talent as an actress awoke very early. On her sixteenth birthday, Svetlana, who was studying in a drama studio, read the poem “I love you, Peter’s creation!..” She so impressed the famous actor and teacher Lev Vladimirovich Shostak that he immediately offered the girl the main role in the play “The Factory Girl” based on the play Volodina. This was her first serious theatrical experience.

"Girl with no address"

However, after graduating from school, Svetlana entered the philological department of Leningrad University. The girl dreamed of becoming a journalist. At that time, Eldar Ryazanov, still a young but already famous (thanks to the film “Carnival Night”) director, began filming his third film, which was called “Girl without an Address.” The actress who initially auditioned for the main role did not suit the director for some reason, and he turned his attention to Svetlana. Surprisingly, they started filming the girl without any auditions! She was then only nineteen years old.

The film “Girl Without an Address” was released in 1957. Svetlana Karpinskaya, who played Katya Ivanova, instantly became famous throughout the Soviet Union. The film studio received batches of letters from her fans. The address was simple: “Moscow. "Mosfilm". Katya Ivanova." To this day, on the mezzanine, the actress has a bag of letters that her mother collected at that time.

But Eldar Ryazanov, oddly enough, was very dissatisfied with this picture. He was openly sad when “Girl Without an Address” was shown on television, and in all interviews he noted that he had made an incredibly weak comedy. Whether he’s right or wrong, viewers have been watching this picture for decades. And they still remember Svetlana Karpinskaya as “a girl without an address.”

Other film works

However, let's go back to the 50s. After her success in the film “Girl Without an Address,” Svetlana seriously thought about a career as an actress. Boris Iosifovich Zon took her without any exams immediately to the second year of the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography (LGITMC). An outstanding theater teacher told her: “Karpinochka, you don’t need to be taught anything. You are an intuitive with a mimosa soul.”

There were other proposals. The famous Vasily Toporkov took her to study at the Moscow Art Theater School immediately in her third year, and Tovstonogov invited her to work in his theater. They say that one Mosfilm boss even offered to move Svetlana with her parents to Moscow, promising to give her an apartment and roles that would be written specifically for her. Svetlana didn’t believe him, and she didn’t want to part with Leningrad. Who knows - maybe in vain...

In 1961, Karpinskaya graduated from the theater institute, and in the same year she starred in the leading role in the film “Business Trip” along with Oleg Efremov. And then the actress disappeared from the silver screen. No, there was no shortage of proposals from directors. But somehow everything didn’t work out. And there are several reasons why this happens.

One of the reasons was the actress’s marriage. Her first husband, who was also an actor, opposed his wife’s filming. What was it - envy, or simply a reluctance to have a wife next to her - a successful actress? After living with him for five years, Svetlana separated. “My style is to leave men who interfere with my work,” she explains.

Another reason was the actress’s refusal to screen test. One day, it was in 1970, Karpinskaya was invited to audition for the film “Salute, Maria!” Svetlana played well, and then found out that even before her audition for the role, another actress had already been approved. After which Karpinskaya simply stopped going to screen tests.

And yet, the actress periodically acted in films. One of the most notable works of the actress in the 70s was her role in the television film by Pyotr Fomenko “For the rest of my life” based on the story “Satellites” by Vera Panova. The actress remembers this film with great pleasure. In addition, Karpinskaya played a prominent role in the melodrama “Sweet Woman”.

Much more often than in films, Karpinskaya appeared on Leningrad television. She starred in the television film “Dead Souls”, in the film adaptation of Fomenko’s play “This Sweet Old House”, in various fairy tales - “The Seedy Kingdom”, “Tsarevich Prosha”, “Donkey Skin” and others.

Svetlana herself did not agree to some roles. The outstanding director Sokurov, filming his famous “Taurus” in 2001, invited the actress to play the role of Maria Ilyinichna, the leader’s sister. But Svetlana, fearing to appear ugly on camera, refused the role. Maybe that was her problem. Great actresses are never afraid to be ugly.

Personal life

The actress’s first marriage has already been talked about. While still married, Svetlana Karpinskaya met Gennady Voropaev, her second husband, who was also married at the time of their acquaintance. He played the Scientist in the play “Shadow”, and she played the Princess. Voropaev was not only famous (his films “Height” and “Olesya” made him famous), but also fantastically handsome. “It was passion, and mutual. We came together and then diverged. Our daughter Katenka was born, then our grandson Alyosha. Now Gennady Ivanovich is no longer there. It’s a pity he didn’t see his second grandson Mishenka...”

Theater

The actress's unsuccessful film career was fully compensated for by her theatrical activities. In 1974 she came to the Comedy Theater. There she had the opportunity to play many roles in performances: P. Fomenko (“Forest”, “This Sweet Old House”), R. Viktyuk (“Flatterer”), Y. Aksenov (“Twelfth Night”, “Blue Sky, and in there are clouds") For twenty years in a row, Karpinskaya played in the play “Accelerators”. He was successful in all cities and villages. But perhaps the most famous was the role of the Princess in the famous play “Shadow” by N.P. Akimov, the same one where she played with her second husband.

At one time, Karpinskaya went to work at the BDT. Tovstonogov personally invited her. Svetlana worked at the famous theater for about four years. But then it turned out that the actress would not have any more roles, and Karpinskaya returned to her native theater. Svetlana Alekseevna recalls that period: “I left the Comedy Theater for four years and I won’t say that this departure was very happy for me. I always remember this with a shudder, although at the BDT I even received an award for a well-played role. Having returned to my favorite land, I realized that it was not at all by chance that Anton Pavlovich Chekhov classified his plays as comedies. Oh, if only there were directors who could convey the exquisite, charming atmosphere of Chekhov’s play, I would gladly play such a comedy, full of tears...”

At the St. Petersburg Comedy Theater named after. Akimova Svetlana Karpinskaya continues to work to this day. Here she received the title of Honored Artist of the Russian Federation. Extraordinary talent, bright personality, infectious stage temperament, musicality, the highest professionalism and efficiency ensured that the artist was in absolute demand in the theater’s repertoire. She can play poignant, lyrical, and grotesque roles.

With exquisitely thin, sharp strokes, and with the mockery of a witty cartoon, she paints the image of Wilde’s Lady Bracknell in the play “The Importance of Being Earnest.” In a vaudeville style, Karpinskaya plays the role of Mrs. Orgonov in the play “Ladies and Hussars” with ease, temperament and fervor. And in a completely different way, with deep semantic content and subtle psychological elaboration, the actress plays the role of the widow Daria Fedoseevna Kruglova in the play “It’s not all Maslenitsa for the cat.”

“I never regret what I did... You know, I was incredibly lucky. There are a million films. How many paintings have passed through and are not remembered, how many are lying on the shelves! Many actors suffer, they are forgotten, some drink, others are completely desperate. And I play in the theater! Playing on stage - any artist will tell you - is an incomparable pleasure...” says the actress.

Actress or journalist?

Karpinskaya Svetlana Alekseevna, whose filmography began with such stunning success in the role of Katya Ivanova, after the premiere of “Girl Without an Address”, she was finally convinced that she should devote herself to acting.

She dropped out of the university and immediately became a 3rd year student at the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography. In one of her interviews, Karpinskaya said that one of the representatives of the Mosfilm management offered to move to a permanent place of residence in the capital, promising to provide her with an apartment and roles. It was difficult for her to believe such loud promises, and she did not want to leave Leningrad.

The beginning of the 60s was marked by another major role. Svetlana Karpinskaya played Claudia in the film “Business Trip”. In subsequent years, several more films with the participation of this wonderful actress were released on the silver screen: “Cranks”, “Tsarevich Prosha”, “The Lost Among the Living”, “Habitat”.

Forward to a new dream!

It was thanks to Ryazanov that the young artist believed in herself. Now she makes a decision that will radically change her whole life. Svetlana decided that journalism was not her path after all, but becoming an actress would be great. Karpinskaya Svetlana, an actress, one might say, an accomplished one, drops out of the university, which she so aspired to enter, and becomes a student at the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography, and she was immediately accepted into the third year.

Now several films with her participation are being released. The beginning of the sixties of the twentieth century brought her another major role - she played Claudia in the film “Business Trip”. A little later there were more films that were loved by the audience: “Tsarevich Prosha”, “Weirdos”, “Habitat” and others.

But there could be more roles...

However, there could be even more roles. Actress Svetlana Karpinskaya received many offers from the most famous directors. But she did not always accept these offers. “A girl with character” studied the roles offered to her in great detail and demandingly. There were also personal reasons. Karpinskaya’s first husband, also a representative of the acting profession, had a very negative attitude towards his wife’s success in cinema. It's difficult to say what was the reason for this. Perhaps envy or a banal reluctance for his woman to be successful. Their marriage lasted five years, after which Svetlana Karpinskaya herself left her husband.

Another reason is the actress’s reluctance to undergo screen tests. The fact is that in 1970, Karpinskaya was invited to audition for one of the key characters in the film “Salute, Maria!” She did a great job, playing the given part of the role well. But it turned out that even before the audition began, another actress was approved for the role. After this unpleasant incident, she avoided going to screen tests.

This strange feeling is envy...

She could have had many more roles in Soviet cinema, but Karpinskaya rather meticulously considered all the proposals coming from directors (and there were so many of these proposals!). In addition, the first husband also had a hand in this (in parallel with the filming, Svetlana Karpinskaya, whose films the whole country loved, managed to marry an honest, intelligent and “poisonous” man, who looked like a real lord). He perceived his wife’s increasing success with undisguised hostility. After all, Svetlana’s first husband was also a representative of the acting profession. It was unpleasant for him that his wife was literally idolized. Therefore, he disapproved of his wife’s successes on the set.

He probably felt ordinary envy. In addition, he really did not want Svetlana Karpinskaya, whose films were increasingly appearing on screens, to become a successful actress.

One way or another, this marriage lasted five years. And then Svetlana herself decided to leave her husband.

Another reason for not such a huge number of roles was Svetlana’s cautious attitude towards screen tests - she did not want to go through them. And here's the thing. One day she was invited to one of the main roles in a film. Svetlana did a brilliant job and played the part of the role that was assigned to her perfectly. Karpinskaya was already dreaming of a new job when it turned out that a completely different actress had been cast for this role, and a long time ago, even before the auditions began.

Girl with character

As Svetlana Karpinskaya herself admits, films and roles leave different marks on the soul. Her favorite works are her role in the drama “For the Rest of My Life” and the melodrama “Sweet Woman.” One of Svetlana Karpinskaya’s most high-profile and large-scale films was the role of Vera Khomyakova in the film “The Third Take” directed by L. Tsutsulkovsky (1992).

There were several roles that Karpinskaya did not want to play herself. For example, having received an offer to star in Sokurov’s film “Taurus” (2001) in the role of the leader’s sister Maria Ilyinichna, she was afraid of appearing ugly in the frame and therefore refused.
