Jude Law: "The word 'young' should now be in every role I play"

Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter

After the British actor played the main role in the TV series Sherlock, he gained an army of fans around the world. Nothing was heard about Benedict’s personal life, and the girls wondered whether his heart was free. Some even began to suspect their pet of non-traditional sexual orientation. Simple politeness between him and actor Martin Freeman, who played the role of Dr. Watson, was regarded by the public as real flirting. A party where Benedict had fun in the company of Michael Fassbender or James McAvoy added fuel to the fire. But before the women had time to give up on Cumberbatch, he surprised everyone with a sudden engagement: theater director Sophie Hunter became the actor’s chosen one. And so in less than a year they completed the “maximum” program: they got engaged, got married and celebrated the birth of their first child.

Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness

Despite the fact that Hugh Jackman has been married to Deborra-Lee Furness for more than 15 years, rumors about his homosexuality still do not subside. Suspicions crept in after the couple adopted children because Deborra was diagnosed with infertility. But fans immediately put forward their own version: that it was actually Jackman who simply did not want intimacy with the opposite sex. By the way, it is not he himself who is most worried about Hugh’s reputation, but Deborra, who, at every opportunity, assures the press that her husband is traditional in every sense.

Jude Law is a famous English actor who was born on December 29, 1972 in east London. Films with Jude Law amaze his admirers from all over the world with their depth and acting. The family of the future actor did not belong to the wealthy part of English society. His father was a primary school teacher, and his mother made a living by teaching English lessons to refugee children. “Since childhood, I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my parents.

It seemed organic to me - they are teachers and I.” However, all of his future dislike for school began in the lower grades. “I constantly endured bullying and ridicule from my classmates. And if even in elementary school I could at least somehow tolerate it, then soon my patience ran out. At first it was even more or less harmless, but as soon as I moved to high school, the situation escalated.” The parents had no choice but to transfer their son to a private school in order to somehow protect him from the ridicule of his classmates.

The first films with Jude Law appeared on wide screens in the mid-80s. “If it weren’t for my desire, you wouldn’t have seen me on wide screens. My parents are theater fans, so they were pleasantly surprised by my desire to get there. At the age of 6, I played in a theater production for the first time, and at 12, I went on tour with a theater troupe.” The actor's debut took place in the film "Pocket Money". A little later, the film “The Tailor of Gloucester” was released, and then he appeared in the TV series “Families”. And already in 1991, Jude appeared in a small and inconspicuous supporting role in Sherlock Holmes. At that time, Jude Law did not yet know that he would return to the story of the incredible detective.

Films with Jude Law became truly famous after the release of “The Crane,” and “Shopping” only confirmed his position. All critics began to note his extraordinary talent, and the actor himself became a regular on various television projects. On the set of “Shopping,” Jude not only found his popularity, but also his future wife. She became the actress Sadie Frost, who played the role of his hero’s girlfriend. “It was love at first sight, so maybe that’s why all the scenes with feelings for Sadie became so easy for me to do?”

In the biography of Jude Law, there was a role in which he had to play naked. It was the tragicomedy "Terrible Parents". Critics were shocked, and the film led to many scandals. But despite everything, the audience was crazy about the role of Jude. Having a remarkable figure and tall stature, Jude Law was able to make the entire female population of America fall in love with him.

The film “Wilde,” which was released in 1997, brought him stunning success. The film tells the story of the complex relationship between Oscar Wilde and his crush Alfred Douglas. The role of a gay man was not easy for Jude Law. “Since I was raised within strict boundaries, it was difficult for me to imagine myself in a different orientation. Although I have nothing against such men, I myself felt out of place.” The actor was still able to adequately perform his role, for which he received the Evening Standard award for best debut role.

However, despite the awards, the actor no longer wanted to sit in the UK and set off to conquer the Holy Hills. He decided to expand his boundaries in Hollywood. In 1997, he was able to try himself in the role of a paralytic in the film “Gattaca”. “I liked playing in Hollywood much more. There are many famous people there who will always help you play well. My partners on the set in Gattaca were Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, who helped me a lot.

If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t have been able to act in half the film!” That same year, the wedding of Lowe and Sadie took place, a relationship that developed very rapidly. “Our wedding was exactly as we had planned. "Sadie always dreamed of a wedding on the water, so we rented a barge in the middle of the Thames." Sadie, according to Jude, inspired him to organize his own film company in tandem with other popular actors. She received the name “Natural Nylon” from the combination of the names of two cities - New York and London. However, real success lay ahead.

His appearance in the film “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” where he played with Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow, came like a bolt from the blue. The rental exceeded the cost of the budget twice! Critics called Jude "the most talented of actors, who easily managed to convey the image of the arrogant Ripley." Lowe was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award, but ultimately only received an award from the British Academy of Film Arts.

In the war film Enemy at the Gates, Jude played the role of Vasily Zaitsev. Although the film's budget was considerable, the film itself did not receive particularly rave reviews. In Russia, this film had virtually no success at all, since it was in many ways at odds with the original events that took place during the siege of Leningrad.

In Cold Mountain, which was released in 2003, Jude played the role of a soldier. “This film has special meaning for me. I only did one film in 2003 because it made a big impression on me. The American Civil War was one of the most important pages in history, so I wanted to meet the expectations of everyone who watches this film.” Although critics did not recognize the film as successful, Jude Law was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe. The overall box office did not disappoint either – 173 million was a good result for the film.

In 2003, Jude's marriage failed. Despite the fact that Jude Law's children remained with their mother, he tries to take part in their upbringing. “We already had a tense relationship with Sadie, and the tabloids that trumpeted my relationship with Kidman provoked our breakup even more.” The tabloids did not want to leave either the actor or Jude Law's wife alone. Their pages constantly featured articles about the romance between Jude Law and Sienna Miller, who became his partner in the film “Handsome Alfie: What Men Want.”

After Sherlock Holmes, Jude Law became even more famous, and his relationship with Miller also failed. This is the other side of the life of the famous actor. However, despite the troubles in his personal life, Lowe continued acting, and his latest works were a constant success.

Jude Law

Jude Law and Philippa Cone Jude

For a long time, blue-eyed blond Jude Law was suspected of having affairs with men. The actor has said more than once that his “tender” appearance played a cruel joke on him and gave rise to rumors that he dates women only for show. And even after Jude married British actress Sadie Frost in 1994, who in a six-year marriage gave birth to two sons and a daughter, the rumors did not subside and continued to circulate even despite Jude’s high-profile romances with the most desirable women in Hollywood (what is the connection worth? with Sienna Miller!). And only in May last year, when Jude married Philippa Coan Jude, the haters calmed down a little.

Jude Law: "The word 'young' should now be in every role I play"

Still from the film “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”
07/24/2018 Editorial THR Russia The new performer of the role of Professor Dumbledore said whether he has a favorite spell and what JK Rowling advised him.

Only the lazy didn't make a joke about the young Pope when Jude Law was appointed to play Albus Dumbledore in the film Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. For Potter fans, the news caused an attack of skepticism, but when the first photos and then trailers appeared, the public became kinder. Let us remind you that in the second part of the adventures of Newt Scamander we will see how he studied at Hogwarts under the leadership of the young Dumbledore, and later, together with him, he confronts the professor’s former comrade Gellert Grindelwald ( Johnny Depp ), who set out on the path of evil.

Entertainment Weekly spoke with Jude, who explained how his Dumbledore differs from the one we saw in the Harry Potter franchise, what JK Rowling advised him before filming, revealed (by accident) a couple of intriguing plot details and spoke about what he should be like. the sexual orientation of his character.

Did you do any research before accepting this role?

I know the Harry Potter books and films well, my children grew up with them, and I grew up with them for company. I also watched the first Fantastic Beasts and really liked it. Then I was lucky enough to talk to author and screenwriter JK Rowling immediately after starting work on the role. She gave me a sense of Albus's life journey - who he was, what was going on in his head, in his heart and in his world within this particular story.

Did you watch Richard Harris and Michael Gambon play Dumbledore?

I'm sure I leaned on them because I've seen their work and have incredible admiration for both of them as actors. We talked to the director David Yates and decided that we shouldn't play one of them, but kind of younger. Our Dumbledore is a man who still has 100 years ahead of him before becoming the character we know. So we wanted to see what he was like at the time and create our own version. I always find it funny when David says “young Albus” - I’m already 45, already having a midlife crisis. But I'll be happy to stick with this character for as long as I can!

It's funny that you went from the young Pope to the young Dumbledore in pop culture.

The word “young” must now be in every role I play, according to my contract.

What did Rowling tell you in terms of acting or a character's inner life that you found helpful?

Oh my goodness, there are so many references to his inner life. What opened up for me was his sense of play. Dumbledore has a very young, active approach to life, but there is something heavy in his heart, in his past, that is holding him back. He has a good sense of humor, a kind heart, self-esteem and a sense of the past.

Still from the film “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”

Did you have any influence on how Dumbledore would look in the film?

Well, when you have famed costume designer Colleen Atwood working with you, you know you're in great hands. There is no one else like her in the world of cinema. She has a very clear vision and is open to collaboration. There were all sorts of tricks, of course, but on the whole I was successfully integrated into the general style, which was clear from the very beginning.

So what is Dumbledore like these years and how will he be different from the character we know?

Like I said, he will have a sense of humor and mischief, a bit of an anarchic streak, a sense of what is right and what he believes in, and a touch of mystery. We will also show how the kon wins people over to his side - quite tactfully. There's also something weighing on him—but I don't want to talk about that much—and that's something he has to overcome, or he hopes to overcome. He is also passionate about sharing his knowledge and is a very strong and involved teacher.

He teaches transfiguration, right?

He doesn't actually teach transfiguration, not this time.

Wow! Because the Potter Wiki says that Dumbledore was a Transfiguration teacher before becoming Headmaster.

At this stage of my career, no. I’m not sure if I can tell you what he teaches (later, according to published footage, it turned out that Dumbledore teaches Defense Against the Dark Arts - editor’s note).

A skeleton in the classroom points to the subject that Dumbledore is teaching.

OK. So, what's your favorite spell that you've learned?

Well... I... I only succeeded in one thing. There's a lot you don't know about Albus in this movie. And there are certain limitations in storytelling - you'll see, everything will make sense. You won't see Dumbledore in all his glory just yet.

Interesting! And if I remember correctly, Dumbledore doesn't have the famous Elder Wand yet, right? What kind of wand does he have now?

That's right, Dumbledore doesn't have the Elder Wand yet. His current wand reflects him very well - it is made from the root of a beautiful dark tree with a stone at the end.

Dumbledore asks Newt to go after Grindelwald. What is his relationship with his former student?

I think what he likes about Newt is his moral code, the fact that he always does the right thing because he can't help it. I think he likes that Newt sees beauty in every monster, because I think Dumbledore feels like a monster. And, of course, there is the relationship between teacher and student. And Newt is not afraid to tell Dumbledore that he is wrong - he is not his servant.

Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law

There was some excitement earlier this year when David Yates told us that the film's Dumbledore "isn't really gay." How obvious do you think Dumbledore's sexuality should be?

A few years ago, Jo Rowling revealed that Dumbledore was gay. I asked her exactly this question, and she answered - yes, he is gay. But your sexual orientation does not define you as a person. Dumbledore is multifaceted. I guess the question is: How is Dumbledore's sexuality portrayed in the film? You need to remember that this is only the second film in the franchise. And the most brilliant thing about Jo's work is the way she develops characters, bares their heart over time. In this film you will only get to know Albus, and there is a lot ahead of you. We learn a little about his past at the beginning of the film, and then the characters and their relationships develop naturally, which I'm very happy about. But we are not going to reveal everything at once.

It is obvious that Dumbledore had a relationship with Grindelwald. What kind of relationship is this at the time of the film? And what was it like working with Johnny Depp?

I actually didn't have any scenes with Johnny. As I said, this is only the second part of a very long story. I've always admired Johnny from afar, but we don't know each other personally and I haven't met him yet. In many ways, this helped our characters, since in the film they had not seen each other for a long time. So there's a complexity to it that I like. Again, the past will definitely show up.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tasha MacAulay

As soon as the young actor made his debut in the film “10 Things I Hate About You,” gossip immediately began to spread about his intimate relationship with his co-star on the set, Heath Ledger. The thing is that Joseph never liked to advertise the details of his personal life, and therefore for many years he showed off on the list of the most eligible bachelors. In 2020, Gordon-Levitt surprised fans with a loud announcement: he proposed to his longtime lover Tasha McCauley, who is far from the world of show business and works as a manager of one of the Silicon Valley companies. A year later, the newlyweds became parents and finally dispelled all possible speculation about Joseph’s orientation.

Jude Law: "I'm monogamous by nature"

What does it seem like at first glance? Cold, self-confident, maybe even narcissistic. Such a person is unlikely to make any effort to seduce a woman; rather, he will, muttering icy pleasantries through his teeth, dodge the ladies who flock to the light of his beautiful face. Jude Law is emotionless, like silent film actors or imperialist spies in early Soviet films. Or - like the grown-up boy Kai, whose heart was never saved by Gerda.

But it all just seems. Meanwhile, “boy Kai” arouses serious passions. They talk about his romances with Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Sienna Miller, Lindsay Lohan and a dozen other young ladies. In some places the rumors are worth believing, in others they are not, but fans (as well as admirers) are losing their minds over him, and one lady once bought for a thousand pounds a pillow on which Jude slept in the hotel penthouse for only a couple of nights.

ENGLISH POODLE

Lowe was once a quiet man. The beautiful London child, named by his Beatlemaniac parents after the song “Hey Jude!”, was not particularly popular among his peers. The boys teased him, called him “poodle” and beat him because he looked like a girl, had a non-male name, and was lying to the teachers. The girls did not pay attention to the sweetheart with flaxen curls precisely because he was beaten too often. The guy studied well, and what he acquired at school is still reflected today. Few actors who earn millions for acting or appearing in commercials (a contract with Dior brought him $20 million!) can quote Thomas More's Utopia. Jude knows how to do this, shocking journalists not only with his scandalous antics, but also with his education.

Of course, his “universities” cannot be called complete: at the age of seventeen, Lowe dropped out of school for a role on television. This did not come as a surprise to his parents and his older sister Natasha (named after the same Rostova from “War and Peace”): the handsome boy took part in amateur performances from the age of six, and he already had a “soap opera” under his belt. Only in London fame does not come through a television screen...

FROM THE BATH TO NEW YORK

Acting training at drama school was difficult: teachers recognized the student’s excellent “exterior,” but completely refused to believe in his talent. In Hollywood, from morning to evening, legends are told about a cute bartender who was called to an audition by a tipsy producer. In prim England, an actor is tested on stage. The scene showed that Jude was very likable only in the role of a cute guy in the background who bothers the heroine. But the vaunted “exterior” worked here too.

The directors made full use of the actor's external characteristics. Photo: Kinopoisk.ru

So, London, 1994. Jude Law is 22 years old. He is handsome, beautifully built and unencumbered by prejudice. Yes, he again got a supporting role - the son of the heroine in Jean Cocteau's play "Terrible Parents". But the first scene is played in the bathroom, and Jude comes out naked. In order to calm moralists, some things are masked with foam, but this foam is not so much. Girls cry, respectable matrons blush but cannot look away, gays are delighted. So from a London bath the guy goes straight to New York - the only one from the entire troupe of the play that was transferred to Broadway. His partner, his mother, is Kathleen Turner, and among the spectators is Yoko Ono. He is noticed, and Lowe takes advantage of this in a calculated way. Useful acquaintances, gentle smiles... Jude becomes one of many important people. Older women take care of a cute boy, men of a certain orientation also do not forget to push such and such beauty upward to fame. And then Sadie appeared...

(NOT) AN EXEMPLARY FAMILY MAN

In fact, Sadie Frost appeared in Lowe’s life much earlier; she played his girlfriend in the thriller “Shopping” in 1994. Sadie was married to Gary Camp, the guitarist of a popular band at the time. She had already given birth to a son, and her life seemed very measured. The actress was on the rise, playing with the famous Coppola in Dracula. Sadie was also almost seven years older than Jude. Nothing foreshadowed a romance, but three years after they met, the wedding of divorced Sadie and Jude was celebrated on a barge sailing along the Thames. Lowe insisted on paying for everything: at that time, it was Sadie Frost who was clearly richer.

On the set of the film “Shopping,” Jude met his future wife, Sadie Frost. Photo: Kinopoisk.ru

Jude spent a long time persuading her. It looks like it was a story from the series “Honey, I’ll give you a star!” And for several years the handsome man seemed to be an exemplary family man. Adopted a boy, Sadie. Three more children - a son, then a daughter, then another son - were proof of an absolutely happy marriage. In an interview, Lowe talked about how he cooks breakfast for his wife, how he walks with his children, and how he feels. In addition, he decorated himself with a tattoo in honor of his beloved wife. Only with the third baby, the family took a few steps back in his eyes: finally, the world of cinema brought him to the forefront. The fees became higher, he was called to film more often, and Jude’s partners were no longer stars of yesteryear, like Kathleen Turner, or promising British actresses, like the faithful Sadie. The conversation after Cold Mountain was about the level of Nicole Kidman, who recently broke up with Tom Cruise. And although Nicole denied all rumors about the affair, Sadie felt worse and worse. In addition, Sadie and Jude talked at length about their vegetarianism, and after filming Cold Mountain, Lowe suddenly turned to meat. And when Jude spent only four days with his wife after the birth of their third baby, and then went off to filming, his wife rebelled. In 2003, the couple was divorced. Jude paid the woman whose name is immortalized on his tattooed arm $18 million.

ATHLETE SIENNA

No, it wasn't Kidman. Nicole even won a couple of cases against tabloids that claimed otherwise. Maybe Jude was annoyed by his wife's postpartum depression. Maybe he just saw the proximity of serious fame and felt that only he could achieve it, without looking back. Jude’s father also told him as a child that “if you are number one, no one will dare to offend you.” Lowe did not abandon his family completely; he often met with the children, which he still does today. But relationships with women turned into a kind of sport for him.

Yesterday one, today another, equally insignificant. And the appearance of a new athlete, 21-year-old Sienna Miller, in his life did not surprise anyone at first. However, an engagement followed, for the sake of which Jude rushed the divorce in every possible way and, without question, handed over to the “ex” everything that she demanded. House in London? Please! Monthly content? No problem! The actor had just arrived at a situation where he was being cast in six films a year: no downtime, no lack of money. He was ready to pay generously, if only there would be no questions about meetings with children.

Sienna Miller is considered one of the most stylish things in the world. But Lowe cheated on her with his children's nanny. Photo: Kinopoisk.ru

There were no such things. But it didn't turn out too well for Sienna. Engaged Jude cheated on the beauty with his offspring's nanny. The nanny told the press everything. Lowe did not deny anything, but willingly apologized to Sienna in all interviews. He called her smart, and beautiful, and talented... He was even able to convince her to return for a while, but it all ended in failure. “I’m monogamous by nature,” Jude once said in an interview. Practice has proven the opposite.

HAPPY END

Today, all the participants in this reality show are behaving very positively. Sadie Frost supports Sienna Miller after offensive graffiti appears on the wall of her home. Sienna has found new love. Jude Law went to Afghanistan with a peace mission, and not so long ago he helped the daughter of Heath Ledger, who committed suicide. And only he himself knows what woman Jude is with now. Either he held the hand of Rod Stewart's daughter Kimberly, or he went to the sea with fashion model Lily Cole. The playboy game dragged on.

Money flows to him like a river; many companies want to see this particular face in their advertising. A universal face - suitable for the sniper Zaitsev in the film Enemy at the Gates, and for Oscar Wilde's lover in the film Wilde. About the first story, by the way, he always said one thing: it’s very cold in Russia. But the second gave him a different feeling: “If you can play a gay man and then return to your wife and children, you are an actor.”

Tobey Maguire

Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Mayer

Paparazzi have repeatedly caught Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio leaving a bar in the morning or sunbathing together on yachts in the summer. However, rumors about Toby's homosexuality immediately subsided when he married jewelry designer Jennifer Mayer in 2007 and became the father of two beautiful kids. The actor was so tired of the baseless accusations that he decided to leave big cinema and devote himself entirely to his family.
