In our family, it is customary to undergo regular examinations: me, mom, dad, my children - once every six months we all take general tests and do an ultrasound. So I didn’t worry about anything, nothing hurt me. Serious things usually don’t hurt... And then I had a dream: I saw a doctor in a white coat who looked at me and said: “Yulia, you have cancer.” I woke up, I think - I recently visited the doctor. But I know myself, I have a very developed intuition, I just don’t dream about anything. I went for a re-examination and had an ultrasound, including the thyroid gland. The doctor said that there is some lump, very similar to a tumor, and a biopsy needs to be done. The fears were confirmed - a malignant tumor.”

Volkova, without hesitation, agreed to an operation to remove a malignant tumor, which, according to her attending physician, was safe: “A month after the diagnosis was made, the operation was performed. It is not very complicated, it lasted two and a half hours under general anesthesia. It wasn't painful or scary. They make a small, about five centimeters, incision. Look, I still have a barely noticeable scar. The worst thing happened then. After such an operation, they immediately begin to talk to the patient. I woke up, the doctor began to ask me questions, but I could not answer anything. Nothing at all. I’m trying to say something, but it doesn’t work, instead of sounds there’s some kind of hissing, there’s no voice at all. It turned out that the doctor had touched the vocal cord. This is what became the biggest challenge for me. On the one hand, I am alive, I got rid of the problem, but on the other hand, I lost my voice for several years, I lost my main working tool. At first, let alone sing, I couldn’t speak. I sat and thought: everything is pointless - giving injections to the phoniatrist, singing to the teachers... nothing will help! The doctor’s mistake turned into hell for me.”

It took Julia several years to restore her voice. To do this, the singer even had to seek help from a special specialist who works with transsexuals.

“I suffered for a year, then I had two operations to restore my voice in Germany - it didn’t help. After some time, I found a clinic in Seoul where they do voice work for transsexuals; a Korean doctor gave me my voice back. Of course, I don’t “sound” the same as before, although I always had a hoarse voice. But today, I admit, it’s even easier for me to sing than to speak,” Yulia shared her experience.
