Vladimir Mashkov has always been a model of an actor with a clearly tangible inner core. You won’t see in him either the “prettyness” inherent in many modern artists, or visible weakness, or the habit of bending under the pressure of circumstances.
No matter who he plays in the movies, you can feel the strength, freedom and rebellious character of a real Russian man everywhere. This was the case at the beginning of his acting career, and nothing has changed now.
On November 27, Mashkov turned 55 years old. On the actor’s birthday, the editors of the portal Teleprogramma.pro decided to remember what characters he played over the past 30 years, how he grew up and how he changed in appearance.

"The Beast Exulting" (1989)
- Director: Vladimir Ufimtsev
- Starring: Evgeny Mironov, Elena Ufimtseva, Vladimir Mashkov, Yan Tsapnik, Alexey Shemes
Mashkov's first appearance in a movie happened in 1989. In the short film “The Jubilant Beast,” 26-year-old Volodya played a notorious scumbag who beat a student and then, together with a friend, violated his girlfriend.
In this role, he looked very organic - the actor, who had previously been expelled from the Novosibirsk Theater School for fighting, had both a smug look and a predatory glint in his eyes. By the way, the student he beat was played by Evgeniy Mironov, who was equally young but who managed to star in three films. Later, these two wonderful actors worked together more than once, including in very serious films, but it all started with this 25-minute short film.

Movie
Vladimir Mashkov made his film debut in 1989 in the film “Green Fire of the Goat.” In total, Mashkov starred in about fifty films. The actor’s finest hour came in 1994, when he played roles in the films “Limit” by Denis Evstigneev and “Moscow Nights” by Valery Todorovsky. Then there were the films “American Daughter” by Karen Shakhnazarov and “The Thief” by Pavel Chukhrai, which received an Oscar nomination. In 2000, he played the role of Emelyan Pugachev in the historical film “Russian Revolt” by Alexander Proshkin.
“Do it once!” (1989)
- Director: Andrey Malyukov
- Starring: Evgeny Mironov, Vladimir Mashkov, Alexey Burykin, Sergey Shentalinsky, Alexander Domogarov, Alexander Mironov, Alexander Polkov, Oleg Alexandrov, Vladislav Bychkov, Yuri Kochnev
In the film “Do It Once!”, released the same year, Mashkov again had to play the role of a scoundrel - the arrogant and cruel Sergeant Shipov. Before demobilization, together with other “grandfathers”, he decided to mock the new recruit Gavrilov (he was played by the same Evgeny Mironov). Thanks to the excellent performances of the young actors, the viewer could really believe this story and begin to fiercely hate Shipov. The saddest thing about this story is that it tells about what was really happening in the Soviet army at that time.
Anastasia Zavorotnyuk: the reasons for the illness of the most famous nanny
About another passion of Mironov, only her rare name was known - Marianna. The actor had a fairly long relationship with her. However, the couple never got married, which Eugene later commented: “She’s kind, sweet, good, but I’m bored with her.”
Due to the absence of a wife, they began to say about Yevgeny Mironov that he had an unconventional orientation. In 2013, a scandal erupted: the artistic director of the Moscow Conceptual Theater Kirill Ganin wrote on his Facebook page about Evgeny Mironov and his colleague Sergei Astakhov that the actors were gay and entered into a same-sex marriage in Germany. He also stated that most Moscow theaters are run by gays who form the “blue mafia.” The artist denied rumors that he is gay.
In 2020, information appeared in the news that Evgeniy was raising a child born by a surrogate mother. Colleagues noticed that the actor came to rehearsals at the theater with a little boy. According to anonymous sources, the actor’s son’s name is Peter.
Photos of Evgeny Mironov can be seen on his Instagram account. Over 30 thousand people have subscribed to the actor’s page.
“Moscow Evenings” (1994)

- Starring: Vladimir Mashkov, Ingeborga Dapkunaite, Alexander Feklistov, Alisa Freindlikh, Natalya Shchukina, Yuri Kuznetsov, Avangard Leontyev, Marina Openkina, Svetlana Razgulyaeva
In this film, based on Leskov’s story about the famous Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Vladimir appeared before the viewer in the image of a passionate, rustically rude carpenter. Without any difficulty, this man managed to seduce a married girl and make her fall in love with him so much that she would do anything for him, including murder.
"American Daughter" (1995)
- Director: Karen Shakhnazarov
- Starring: Vladimir Mashkov, Allison Whitbeck, Maria Shukshina, Armen Dzhigarkhanyan, Steven Epp, Johnny Hayes, Malcolm Brownson, Jennifer Davis, Dale Morris, Teddy Lane Jr.
And here Mashkov is 32 years old, but he looks like he’s 40. His hero is a restaurant musician who flew to America to pick up his daughter Anya, who had been secretly taken from her home country by his ex-wife a few years earlier. Simple, speaking no English and clumsy in expressing his fatherly feelings, Alexey and his daughter set off on a long journey in the hope of reaching Russia. He sings Elvis Presley songs with a guitar (the actor is good at this musical instrument), tries to bribe the police and finds himself in various funny situations.
Mironov and Mashkov swapped places
The director, who has previously helmed sets with the likes of Jennifer Connolly, Ben Kingsley and Uma Thurman, doesn't seem to have to put in the extra effort to stay in the spotlight on set. Everything happens clearly, almost automatically. The only thing that stubbornly refuses to obey the plan is the St. Petersburg rains, which in a matter of minutes turn the courtyard of Baron Stieglitz’s mansion into bubbling mud, in the dilapidated interiors of which there is an apartment where the thieves’ common fund is kept and a closet-pawnshop. In fact, this building, built according to the design of the architect Alexander Krakau back in 1862, belongs to the architectural monuments, but only the facade facing the Promenade des Anglais meets such a high rank. Inside, these are huge rooms with soaring ceilings, decorated with marble and filled with sculptures, here and there covered with construction mesh. On the windows are yellowed pages from the Pravda newspaper from 1952. Any art critic who comes here will grab his heart, but for filmmakers this is a paradise. Wherever the camera looks, it is sure to come across a rich texture that exactly corresponds to the alarming atmosphere of the 30s and 40s of the last century.
It was then that this almost detective story took place, which many years later became the basis for the “Ashes” script: an army commander (Vladimir Mashkov) and an experienced security guard (Evgeny Mironov), to whom the thieves entrusted the common fund, having accidentally met on a train, literally change with each other lives. The one who was a thief puts on a military peacoat, and the one who recently wore shoulder straps disappears from the scene of the commotion with a bag full of gold. Ash is the nickname of that bugbear.
- Why Ash? All because I’m also a bit of an artist. He opens the safe faster than the ash falls from a lit cigarette,” says Evgeniy.
According to the actor, during the filming he had to jump from rooftops, jump from a truck moving at full speed, participate in shootouts, and ride a motorcycle. There is also a serious love line in the script for Mironov - with a school teacher and, as it happens, the legal wife of the hero Vladimir Mashkov, played by Elena Lyadova.
— My character experiences true love. Big one. Dramatic,” continues Mironov. “After all, I need to make another man’s wife fall in love with me.” And for this I did everything possible. A woman's heart is, you know, not a safe to crack. It definitely lasted for several episodes. (Smiles.)
Evgeny has just filmed a scene with his colleagues in the thieves' case - the episode in which Ash is given the common fund. In order to pour an impressive mountain of shiny objects onto the table, the production designers had to go around more than one flea market. And the key jewel - a gold brooch in the shape of a dragonfly - was made to order.
When asked whether the gold in the frame is real, the actor, without getting confused, answers: “Well, of course, they took it from Piotrovsky!”
Another thief, this time named Vitya Wardrobe, is played by Andrei Smolyakov. He got his nickname because he never changes his wardrobe - the same bright red Spartak T-shirt. Although, according to the actor, his hero is more likely to support the Odessa Chernomorets. In addition, he has a large tattoo on his neck: a spider in a web. Thief in law sign.
Vladimir Mashkov got used to the image of a security thief.
— Did you have to learn the jargon for the role? - Smolyakov laughs. — I’m already 53 years old, I’ve known him since childhood. But, as Volodya Mashkov funny said, I followed in the footsteps of Oleg Pavlovich (Tabakov - N.K. ) and for the first time in my life I’m filming with gold primes.
Cameraman Ilya Demin, just like the actors, is bound by a contract of non-disclosure of the plot, but based on the camera equipment he lists used in the film, one can roughly imagine the scale of the future action. These include all kinds of cranes, boxes for underwater filming, and steadicams for action scenes. The geography of filming looks just as wide: from Karelia and Vyborg to an ancient monastery near St. Petersburg, where the prison set was built.
Vladimir Mashkov is passing by at this time. In a rough coat, with a wide, high collar. His hero has just brought that same golden dragonfly from the thieves' common fund to the pawnshop.
“Volodya Mashkov is something amazing,” the cameraman says, nodding at the actor. - You look at him on the court - it seems like nothing special. Well, he walks back and forth, smokes, frowns. Then you look at the material - it’s so alive, so real! When I told him about this, he thought I was joking. But then I believed it. What am I telling you - you will soon see everything for yourself.
"Thief" (1997)
- Director: Pavel Chukhrai
- Starring: Vladimir Mashkov, Ekaterina Rednikova, Mikhail Filipchuk, Amalia Mordvinova, Lydia Savchenko, Anna Shtukaturova, Olga Pashkova, Yuri Belyaev, Anatoly Koshcheev, Lyudmila Selyanskaya
The role of Tolyan, a professional thief, is called by movie lovers one of the best roles of Vladimir Mashkov. The actor was able to convey to his hero the strength of his own personality, the strength of his character. And although this character is a scoundrel of all kinds, the viewer still feels respect for him.
Thanks to the talent of Mashkov and other actors, especially little Misha Filipchuk, Pavel Chukhrai’s film was even nominated for an Oscar as best foreign language film.
Career of Vladimir Mashkov: films and roles
Having received a certificate, Vladimir became a student at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Novosibirsk University. But within a year, his life priorities had completely changed.
1982-1990: studies at the theater school and the Moscow Art Theater School

A year later, he was reinstated in the educational institution and took the course of Oleg Tabakov. The master was the only one who believed in Mashkov and saw his acting talent; the other members of the commission did not want to reinstate a student with such a disposition. In 1990, Vladimir received a diploma from the Moscow Art Theater School.
Mashkov's theatrical works
Immediately after studying, Mashkov was accepted into the troupe of Oleg Tabakov's theater studio. He showed his incredible talent already in the first role he played as Abram Schwartz in the production of Sailor's Silence.

The film was remembered by the audience for the duet of two bright and completely different in temperament actors and friends in life - Vladimir Mashkov and Evgeny Mironov. Interestingly, for the sake of filming the series, the actor refused to work with Clint Eastwood.

In 2004, in the film “Papa,” Vladimir not only played the main role, but also acted as a director, screenwriter and producer. Mashkov put all his feelings and heartfelt gratitude to his own father into this picture.

In 2006, the action movie “Piranha Hunt” was released, where Vladimir, in the role of a special forces officer, and his partner are looking for a secret laboratory at the bottom of the Dead Lake. In this film, they seemed to exchange the images of the “bad” and “good” hero with Yevgeny Mironov.

One of Mashkov’s most striking roles is that of the honest and noble deputy head of the Odessa Criminal Investigation Department, David Gotsman, in the large-scale project “Liquidation.” For his skillfully played colorful image, the actor received several awards at once - “Golden Eagle”, “TEFI”, and the FSB of Russia award. The film is often compared to the legendary film “The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed.”

Vladimir had to transform himself on screen into completely different characters: a hired killer in the thriller “Brownie” (in a duet with Konstantin Khabensky) and transport plane pilot Seryoga, who was captured by the Taliban, in the historical drama “Kandahar” (crew commander - Alexander Baluev).

He lives in the tundra among Evenk people and deer and is engaged in making children for local girls for a fee.
The roles of other brothers were played by Evgeny Mironov, Oleg Menshikov, Alexey Kravchenko, Mikhail Krylov. However, the producers decided to make Mashkov this kind of “bull bull” in a vest.

Mashkov, Bodrov Jr., boxer Taktarov and a couple of other people from the episodes. During filming, Mashkov benefited from the genes of his Italian grandmother, who slightly diluted his usual Russian image, adding southern “mystery” to it.
His hero Oleg is a man who knows no fear, who has power and a lot of money, but there are no sincere feelings on the part of his loved ones, including his own mother. And even the moment when he plays Russian roulette does not seem scary to anyone, because death for this hero seems like a kind of salvation.

But the heroes cannot fulfill it, because they suddenly became prey, hunted by bandits led by the “master of the taiga” Prokhor (Evgeny Mironov).
Mom, hello - Mashkov, goodbye
Evgeniy’s mother flew to the capital to save her son and never parted with him. Oleg Tabakov took the student’s mother as an usher in his theater. The colorful roommate, the hooligan Mashkov, has disappeared, but fate will bring friends together on film sets more than once.
Evgeny Mironov with his mother
In the 90s, the entire Mironov family moved to Moscow. Zhenya was joined by her father and sister Oksana, a ballerina. The personal life of Yevgeny Mironov, due to his constant “home-theater” route, was limited to “professional” loves. Saratov classmate Masha Gorelik opened the list of passions.

And only in 2014 the eight-episode series “Gregory R.” was released on television screens. with Mashkov in the title role. "Russia 1"
The Rossiya1 TV channel showed several films with the participation of Vladimir Mashkov.
Particularly worth noting is Mashkov’s work in the TV series “The Idiot,” which was directed by Vladimir Bortko in 2003. Vladimir Mashkov plays the characteristic role of Parfen Rogozhin, the son of a rich merchant in love with Nastasya Filippovna. Rogozhin’s passionate nature overcomes reason: his love for Nastasya, which has turned into an obsession, prompts Parfen to kill the woman so that no one gets her.
In 2007, Rossiya1 hosted the premiere of the serial film “Liquidation” directed by Sergei Ursulyak. The plot is based on the struggle of the Soviet government against gangs after the war in 1946 in Odessa. “Liquidation” is compared by many with our audience’s favorite film “The meeting place cannot be changed.” The main character of the television series, David Markovich Gotsman, is the head of the anti-banditry department of the Odessa Criminal Investigation Department, brilliantly portrayed on screen by Vladimir Mashkov. For this role, the actor was awarded the Russian national Golden Eagle award, won the Golden Duke, and also received the title of Honorary Citizen of Odessa.
“Hunting for Piranha” is an exciting Russian action movie, released in 2006. The special agent, played by Vladimir Mashkov, is faced with the task of not only saving his life, but also preventing a global catastrophe.
In 2010, the film “Kandahar” was released. The action, based on real events, takes place in 1995 in Afghanistan. The Russian crew of a cargo plane carrying ammunition for government forces is captured by the Taliban. Mashkov played the role of co-pilot Seryoga, who managed to organize an escape with other crew members by hijacking his own plane.
In 2013, the famous Hollywood director Vadim Perelman filmed the series “Ashes”. The action takes place between 1938 and 1948. An unusual plot, many plot twists and a truly deep story, one of the main characters of which is Igor Petrov, played by Mashkov. Overnight, he turns from an officer into a bandit, changing fate with another main character - Ash (played by Evgeny Mironov).
Evgeny Mironov is Mashkov’s most important partner in Russia. Both are Tabakov’s students and left the Tabakerka. Their duets in the films “The Idiot”, “Piranha Hunt” and in the TV series “Ashes” always arouse special interest among viewers and professionals. According to Mironov, Mashkov can always help, suggest in which direction to move.
In March 2020, television viewers saw the series “Motherland,” filmed by Pavel Lungin in the genre of psychological thriller. The film tells about the tragedy of officer Alexei Bragin, released from many years of imprisonment. The officer is hiding something: perhaps he was recruited by the enemy. The film received very high ratings. The role of Bragin was brilliantly played by Vladimir Mashkov. “I was impressed by this man. This settler. I still can't fully figure it out. When editing the film, all kinds of special effects, high-quality graphics, and 3D format were used.
On December 28, 2020, the action drama “Moving Up” was released. In this film, the inimitable Vladimir Mashkov starred as the coach of the Soviet basketball team, which beat the “invincible” US team at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
The team players were played by young talented actors - Ivan Kolesnikov, Kirill Zaitsev, James Tratas, Kuzma Saprykin, Alexander Ryapolov.
