Nelly Furtado - Unbreakable Spirit

Nelly Furtado emerged on the music scene and released several critically acclaimed hits such as 2001's "I'm Like a Bird" and "Lights Off" from her 2000 album, Wow, Nelly! When she teamed up with music producer extraordinaire Timothy "Timbaland" Mosley in 2006, they created a musical goldmine with the release of her album Loose. The Portuguese-Canadian singer put the world in a trance as she seamlessly infused her folk-pop worship with Timbaland's futuristic R&B beats. It was official: Furtado had taken the world by storm.

The Grammy winner was on her way to becoming a prominent figure in the entertainment industry... or so we thought. In the blink of an eye, she seemingly disappeared from every magazine cover and slammed the brakes on her Get Loose tour. So what happened?

Furtado endured a series of personal battles that sent her life into a downward spiral. That's the real reason you don't hear from her anymore.

She had a nervous breakdown

Nelly Furtado was 20 years old when “I’m Like a Bird” swept the globe. The track earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and the song remained on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for an impressive 24 weeks. Being so young, Furtado had to grow up quickly to take on the many responsibilities that came with her career, and things got even more complicated when she gave birth to her daughter, Nevis, separated from her baby daddy, and decided to go on her 2007 tour as single mothers.

The pressure of being in the spotlight eventually caught up with Furtado. “I had a nervous breakdown on stage. I was on the Loose tour and my daughter was with me—I was a mom and a singer on tour. I was exhausted. One night I walked on stage and suddenly realized how stressed I was. I actually cried my way through the first two songs,” she told The Daily Mail.

She decided it was time to take a break from touring and returned home to focus on her family. She later told The Daily Mail: "I spent hours alone in my house, just staring at the floor. I felt like a fraud for thinking that people liked me for my image and not for my music."

Music

While still at school, Nellie began to learn to play musical instruments - trombone, ukulele, six-string guitar and piano. The active girl could be seen in the local jazz band and wind orchestra. Gradually, Nelly begins to write music and poetry; at the age of 12, the first songs appear from the pen of the young singer. His favorite genres are rap and hip-hop, which Furtado successfully masters.

As an adult, Nellie moves to live in Toronto. At the beginning of her creative career, having got a job as a secretary in a small company, the young artist creates her own group “Nelstar” in the capital. Nelly writes trip-hop music. Furtado meets musician Tallis Newcreek and releases several songs for a joint duet.

Nelly Furtado in her youth

Luck came to the young singer unexpectedly. At the competition for young performers, which was held in Toronto, Nelly did not take a prize, but met talented producers Gerald Ethan and Brian West. Young people worked in . Representatives of the influential label listened to the singer again in the studio and decided to sign a contract with Nelly to create her first solo album. The managers were not mistaken in their calculations.

Nelly Furtado — I'm Like A Bird

Furtado's debut single, "I'm Like a Bird," received international acclaim, including a Grammy Award for Best Female Vocal Performance and a Juno Award for Song of the Year. The record “Whoa! Nelly" went double platinum in the US and stayed on the Billboard 200 for over a year. In her first album, the Canadian singer boldly mixed styles and genres, while maintaining the naturalness and energy of her stage presentation.

When creating musical compositions, Nelly used elements of rock, folk, hip-hop, electronics and rhythm and blues. In the wake of this success, Furtado made her first world tour called “Burn in the Spotlight.”

After the tremendous success, Nellie began working on her second disc. This time the singer decided to delve into the musical intonations of the peoples of the world, calling the album “Folklore”. Each track of the album received a special sound, the record became much more lyrical and deeper.

Among fans of pop compositions, it did not gain due popularity, which did not prevent the song “Forca” from being included in the musical accompaniment of the European Football Championship, which took place in 2004.

The album was created during the singer’s pregnancy, so it is not surprising that the song “Childood Dreams” appeared among the hits, which Nelly dedicated to the birth of her daughter. The video for the ballad “Try” pleased fans and the public with the emotional performance.

The creation of the third disc took place under the direction of hip-hop star Timbaland. The album “Loose” appeared in 2006 and immediately entered the Billboard 100 top list. Work on songs and videos for the third album took place in Latin America and the USA.

In 2007, “Loose” was recognized as the best-selling album of the year, the phenomenal popularity of which was explained by competent promotion, a preliminary world tour, and a large number of singles. The songs “Promiscuous”, “Maneater” and “All Good Things” became famous. Videos for the hits “Say It Right” and “Do it” were broadcast by the world’s leading music channels.

Among the popular compositions of this time are the duet between Nelly Furtado and musician James Morrison “Broken Strings”. The song “Give It to Me,” recorded together with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake, became a hit. In 8 countries around the world, the single started at the top of the charts, including the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and in 2008 became a Grammy nominee in the category “Best Collaborative Pop Vocal Performance.”

Nelly Furtado - Say It Right

A year after her thirtieth birthday, Nelly again delighted fans with the new collection “Mi Plan”, composed entirely of tracks in Spanish. The singer’s next work sold millions of copies in the USA, and also became the best record of the year in South America. The album's hit "Manos Al Aire" was remixed in collaboration with the singer, who performs under the stage name Pitbull. The series of remixes included adaptations of new songs that were created together with musicians K'os, Tiesto, NERD. Rethought compositions made up the “Best” collection.

The fifth disc “The Spirit Indestructible” in Nelly’s homeland did not achieve the expected popularity results, although sales still remained in the millions. Real success awaited the singer in Eastern European countries: for several weeks in a row, the single Waiting for the night, included in the collection, topped the TOP of the best European compositions in Russia and received a prestigious music award in Poland.

Nelly Furtado - Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)

Another hit on the album, “Big Hoops” (“Bigger the better”), also brought success to the singer. Nelly presented it at the Billboard Music Awards. The song's rating was proven by its gold certification received in Canada.

At the opening of the Vancouver Olympics, Nelly Furtado appeared as a guest star. In a duet with Bryan Adams, the Canadian singer performed the song “Bang the Drum”, which was then included in the collection of musical compositions “The Sounds of Vancouver 2010”.

In addition to her career as a singer, Nelly Furtado also tried her hand as a film actress. The girl got her first experience in 2007, appearing in an episode of the series “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation New York.” The film about the criminologists of the American metropolis kept viewers in suspense at their TV screens for 9 seasons, and Furtado considered it a flattering offer for herself to appear in the plot of one of the episodes of the film.

Having developed a taste for working on a film set, a year later the artist starred in the full-length film, the noir thriller Max Payne.

Another film that appeared in Furtado’s filmography in 2010 was called “The Hockey Musical.” In the Canadian musical comedy, Nellie joined the main cast, transforming into a passionate fan of the hockey team. The audience was able to appreciate the singer's comedic talent.

Nelly Furtado has a short stature (159 cm) and a fragile physique (the artist’s weight did not exceed 49 kg). The singer monitored her diet and was actively involved in sports. Her blue eyes against the backdrop of long dark curls looked charming, even in those moments when the girl appeared in public without makeup.

Over time, the singer’s appearance has changed, which can be seen from numerous photos on Internet resources and social networks, including Instagram.

After giving birth, the artist gained a little weight, which did not critically affect her image. For the album “Loose,” Furtado grew bangs, which stylists styled in a special way. On the eve of her 30th birthday, Nelly dyed her hair blonde for a while, and then returned to dark hair, but at the same time significantly shortened its length.

At the beginning of 2020, the Canadian singer no longer hid her plump figure. It was clear that Furtado felt comfortable at the new weight, although opinions were divided among fans. Some listeners even suggested that Nellie was pregnant again. Many advised the artist to urgently go on a diet. But there were also those who supported the singer.

Plump Nelly Furtado was suspected of pregnancy

The artist especially surprised fans with her appearance when she appeared at a performance at the Pride Island club in New York. Nelly took the stage in a tight white jumpsuit that did not hide her black bustier and bare back and was decorated with large shiny stars. Numerous photos of the pop diva were cited by the media as an example of an unsuccessfully chosen stage costume.

Nelly Furtado has gained weight

At the beginning of March 2020, the “updated” Nelly Furtado appeared on Larry King’s show, where she told fans the secrets of her personal life and creative plans. The singer was awarded the Unstoppable Achievement Award Recipient for supporting the international educational children's foundation.

She longs to be a hermit

Living in the digital age means that there are many social media platforms that many celebrities use to stay connected with their picnics. Furtado prefers a more conservative approach to replaces, but she Neo poli came a century behind with the help of a notary much more than her ex-husband's brothers.

“They are the ones who tweeted me and got me to listen to new things. You should stay Animals grandma—everyone has a Facebook page these days,” she told REN.

Furtado now has an Instagram account, but if she's left behind, she's likely clearing out her online footprint and disappearing completely into obscurity for longer periods of time. In a separate interview with The Daily Mail, she admitted: “There are times when I want to be a hermit living in a cottage. I often crave such solitude."

Divorce paid the price

Nelly Furtado began dating recording engineer Demacio Castellon after they worked together on her 2006 album, Loose. She called him her "secret boyfriend" in a 2007 interview with Blender (via People) and justified their low-key relationship by saying, "I just don't talk about it." Nobody's famous or anything."

The couple kept their secret relationship going strong. Furtado even waited a few months before sharing news of his 2008 nuptials with Entertainment Tonight Canada (via People).

As secretive as her wedding, her divorce from Castellon was even more secretive. While talking to the ladies of the Loose Women broadcast, Furtado shocked her fans when she revealed: "I'm single now... someone here needs to update my Wikipedia - this isn't helping my dating life!"

Although she was optimistic about her solo status, Furtado admitted that the breakdown of her marriage was accompanied by difficult times. Before going her separate ways in the summer of 2020, the singer said she went through an "emotionally difficult time" and found solace in songwriting. "I sang to myself on these long drives and thought to myself, 'I'm so lucky that I can write songs because I can calm down with them,'" she said.

Nelly Furtado - Unbreakable Spirit

Canadian singer Nelly Furtado can rightfully be called a unique singer.

Big Hoops (Bigger The Better) Say It Right I'm Like A Bird Maneater Forca Promiscuous (feat. Timbaland) Turn Off The Light Manos Al Aire …On The Radio (Remember The Days) All Good Things (Come To An End) Is Anybody Out There (feat. K'naan)

Firstly, her voice cannot be confused with any other - the vocals of this performer are very unique, and it is largely thanks to the peculiarities of her voice and manner of performance that Furtado has gained so many fans. Secondly, few modern singers have a repertoire as diverse in style as Nelly. Over the sixteen years of her musical career, Furtado managed to try herself in such genres as rock, folk, rhythm and blues, hip-hop, electronic music, including such radical manifestations as the now fashionable dubstep.

Thanks to all this, Nelly can hardly be called an ordinary pop diva. Among other styles, she has also shown herself in classical Latin American music - Nelly’s roots are evident: her parents Maria and Antonio Furtado are Portuguese immigrants originally from the Azores. At the age of four, Nellie began singing in Portuguese, which she now speaks fluently, as well as in Spanish. Nelly's multiculturalism is evident in everything, including her name - the girl was named after the Soviet gymnast Nelly Kim.

A vibrant mix of cultures. An equally interesting fusion of many genres. Plus, she has excellent artistic and singing talent. There is no doubt why Nelly’s new album under the impressive title The Spirit Indestructible (translated from English as “indestructible spirit”) is so awaited by all music lovers - each new Nelly album is individual in its own way and unlike the previous one. Each new single is like an exquisite musical surprise. What does the singer have in store for us this time?

Nelly's last truly big success was the album Loose, released six years ago. The songs Promiscuous, Maneater and Say It Right, recorded under the strict guidance of Timbaland, at that time the most influential and successful producer in the world, became hits, and were not heard except by the deaf. After Nelly really blew up the music scene with these songs, in 2009 she decided to take a very risky step - releasing the Spanish-language album Mi Plan. Naturally, Furtado has not just a lot of fans in Latin America, but a colossally large number, but still these songs will be heard by a much smaller audience than music lovers who would appreciate tracks in universal English.

However, this step cannot be called a mistake - the singer strengthened her position on the Latin American scene, and the following year, 2010, she made a name for herself with the release of a compilation of her best hits - an album that became one of the best-selling in Europe. Also, not long ago, several joint projects were released with colleagues in the music industry - the group NERD (song Hot N' Fun), DJ Tiesto (single Who Wants To Be Alone), singer K'naan (song Is Anybody Out There).

The first message from The Spirit Indestructible was the song Big Hoops (Bigger The Better), dedicated to... earrings. A very unexpected move both for the text and for the sound of the song itself: a powerful electronic sound, rich bass, jagged rhythm, and towards the end - the now so popular dubstep (many compared the single to last year’s creation of Bjork Crystalline). The song caused a real storm of emotions: some admired Nelly’s once again demonstrated courage and her innovation, others were indignant at the fact that the song had absolutely nothing in common with her previous work.

In any case, let's remember how surprised Furtado's fans were with the single Promiscuous, released in 2006 - either a song, or dialogue, or pop music, or electronics, or hip-hop. Nothing like this has ever been done before. But what a success that followed this composition! It is quite possible that a similar situation will arise with Big Hoops (Bigger The Better). After all, in any case, Nelly’s music is too interesting to let one easily lose sight of it.

The premiere of The Spirit Indestructible, much to the regret of Nelly's fans, was postponed from an earlier date to September 11 of this year. Many saw this as not a very good sign: usually, when the premiere of a disc is postponed, it means that it is much inferior in quality to already released records. But there are also positive sides to this opinion: the singer’s label is changing promotion strategies to avoid failure. Many records, precisely because of miscalculations with advertising and promotion, did not become commercially successful, although they were good quality recordings. For example, this happened with Christina Aguilera's album Bionic or Lady GaGa's Born This Way, which could have become even more popular with the right promotion.

Speaking about what influenced her most when recording the album, Nelly states the following: “Not so long ago I experienced real happiness - universal joy. Of course, motherhood was also happiness for me, but personal happiness. I visited Africa and saw how happy the people there were, all together, happy because they were alive. This was a real revelation for me and greatly strengthened my faith in humanity and reminded me of who I really am. That's why the album turned out to be so, a little childishly naive. This experience gave the name to this album - the indestructible spirit of humanity is able to overcome all disasters."

To the delight of fans of her early work, Nelly also stated that the album will be similar to her debut album Whoa, Nelly! 2000, and will contain elements of alternative music and even reggae. The tracklist includes collaborations with artists such as Ace Primo, Nas and Sara Tavares. Producers include Rodney Jerkins aka Darkchild, Salaam Remi, Bob Rock and Passion Pit. All these names are far from the last in modern show business and inspire confidence that The Spirit Indestructible will be equally individual and at the peak of the latest fashionable musical trends. Undoubtedly, one of the most anticipated releases of this year, with no more than three months left to wait.

She just wants to bake cupcakes

Following her debilitating breakdown, Nelly Furtado retreated from the public eye and focused all her attention on raising her co-parenting daughter with her ex-boyfriend Jasper "Lil' Jaz" Gahunia.

She told ITV Harlots: "It's great that your career takes off and has these blessings, but if you don't have that time where you give and give, you fail," she said. “I need to stay mentally, emotionally and physically healthy for my daughter.”

Furtado said that touring "became very tiring" and she "just longed to be home." When asked to recall this turbulent period in her past, the singer said that she sometimes yearned to return to her pre-fame lifestyle. “Sometimes you just want to sit at home and bring back some cupcakes for your daughter.”

So during the break, she basically went from being a "Maneater" to being a "muffin eater." (Sorry, we had to go there.)

The flowering of Nelly Furtado's creativity

  • The third disc, “Loose,” was created with the help of hip-hop star Timberland in 2006. Immediately after its release, the album entered the Billboard 100 top list, and in 2007 the album was named the best-selling album of the year. In 2008, at the presentation of the album in Russia, Dima Bilan performed as an opening act for the singer.
  • In 2007, Timberland performed the song “Give it to me,” with Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake singing with him. The artists received a Grammy Award for best joint performance of a song.
  • In 2009, a new collection “Mi Plan” was published entirely in Spanish. It became the best in South America, and Nelly Furtado and Pitbull created a dance remix for the song “Manos Al Aire”. This and other interesting remixes were included in the “Best” collection.
  • The album “The Spirit Indestructible” became mega-popular in Eastern Europe, leading the TOP of the best compositions in Russia for several weeks, and earned an award in Poland.
  • Nelly Furtado performed with Bryan Adams at the opening of the Vancouver Olympics. There they sang the song “Bang the Drum” as a duet.
  • At the very beginning of her long career, Nelly Furtado looked like a gentle elfin due to her very short height (159 cm) and petite build (49 kg). The artist always monitored her menu and was actively involved in fitness. Her blue eyes against her dark hair looked enchanting even without makeup.
  • Over time, the girl’s appearance has changed, which is easy to track from numerous photos and videos from the singer’s personal Instagram page.
  • Changes in the star’s appearance became noticeable after giving birth; she became overweight, but this had virtually no effect on the singer’s image.
  • While working on the album “Loose,” Nelly Furtado let her bangs go, which were styled in a special way by her hairdressers.
  • In 2008, the star dyed her locks and became a bright blonde, but this color did not suit her appearance at all. Then Nelly Kim returned to her brown hair, but noticeably reduced the length of her curls.
  • Nelly Furtado's 2020 photo from the Pride Island Festival event broke the internet. The star has changed beyond recognition, so fans did not even immediately recognize the bright singer of the “zeros” in the active brunette.

Nelly Furtado gained a lot of weight after her divorce from Demacio Castellon, gaining 30 extra pounds. The attention of the audience was attracted not only by the fact that the miniature singer had previously gained weight, but also by the heroine’s concert outfit.

The 38-year-old singer opted for a revealing pink jumpsuit and a sparkling fringed bra. Fat Furtado in a ridiculous outfit looked strange, but it looked like the artist was completely comfortable in her new weight, she was just living and enjoying herself on stage.

She worked different jobs

After the release of her album in the spirit of Serum in 2012, Furtado took Peter the tongue to find himself again and to study her work.

"I started taking ceramics classes and drama classes at men's university," she told Refinery29. But that's not all. She also sealed some time by "working in my daughter's library-type books." It was this stroke side hustle and hobby that actually helped her life come full circle. “All these things help me remember who I was,” she said.

After reclaiming his identity, Furtado returned to the studio to create his 2020 album The Ride. “This album is all realizations,” she said. - “I no longer wanted to be surrounded by Bulls**t; I want to demand the truth from the people around me and from myself. We are talking about dreams that do not always coincide with reality and come out on the other side.”

Craving for normal life and cleaning toilets

Being on the road and in front of the spotlight sounds like a dream come true for most artists. However, Furtado became restless with the hustle and bustle that came with being one of the best acts in the music industry. She achieved the success that most people strive for, but in the end, all she craved was a normal life.

During a conversation with GQ, Furtado revealed that when she left the music world, she started doing her own thing. These general household duties were surprisingly fulfilled for her. “I wanted to clean my own bathroom again and do my own laundry again. I really missed normal life,” she said.

To most, cleaning toilets sounds like anything but relaxing, and Furtado knows well what it must look like from the outside looking in. “It really helped me, honestly,” she said. “It sounds stupid, but it saved me,” she said.

Did she burn any bridges?

When Nelly Furtado teamed up with producer Timbaland, the world wasn't ready for her distinctive vocals to be paired with his signature electronic beats. The resulting album, Loose, sold 219,000 copies during its debut week, thanks to hits such as "Promiscuous" and "Say it Right."

They continued to collaborate on various tracks after Loose's debut, including his 2007 song "Give it To Me", which also featured Justin Timberlake. Furtado sings in the choir: "if you see us in the club, we'll act real good / if you see us on the floor, you'll be watching all night." Sounds pretty harmless, right?

Well, the song hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 2007, but despite the track's success, Furtado has made no secret of the fact that she regrets the project. “I had good instincts when it came to my music. Maybe I wish Justin, Timbaland and I hadn't released that song dis [sic] "Give it To Me," she told Metro. “It was the first pop song - dis [sic] - a genre usually reserved for rap. We put a lot of negative energy into the world."

Perhaps beating up the producer who came up with her biggest hits was a bad idea. Since her remarks, Furtado has struggled to recreate the success she experienced with Timbaland's golden touch. (More on this in a minute.)

Biography

The singer's parents are Portuguese, who arrived in Canada from the Azores. They belonged to the working class. Furtado got her name in honor of the famous Soviet gymnast Nelly Kim[1].

Nelly Furtado took part in her first serious show in 2001. Nellie grew up in Canada in the small town of Victoria, founded by some of Canada's first settlers.

Music career

The beginning of the singer’s career is firmly connected with 1996-1998, when the then unknown performer put together a group, giving it the simple name “Nelstar”, thereby showing her serious ambitions and intentions. Nelly released a dozen songs, one of which had a video shot. In 1999, fate threw her into the largest club in Toronto, Lee's Palace, where the Canadian diva met her manager. She still works with him and is still very successful.

The single "I'm like a Bird" became one of the most successful singles of 2001, reaching number one in Canada, number two in Australia and New Zealand, number five in the UK and number nine in the United States. The song was nominated for a Grammy for Song of the Year and won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. It also won the Juno Award for Song of the Year. The next successful singles were "Turn Off the Light" and "...On the Radio (Remember the Days)". Even before the album's release, "Party's Just Begun (Again)" was released as a single in the United States. It also became the soundtrack to the film "Broken Palace". Later, the singer's label decided to change the song slightly and ended up including it on Whoa Nelly's
entitled "Party". Another single for Mexico and South America was the song “Trynna Finda Way” and “Hey, Man!” for UK and Germany.

The album spent seventy-eight weeks on the Billboard 200 and was certified double platinum in the United States in January 2002. That same year, Nelly made her first world tour, entitled "Burn in the Spotlight".

, and Nelly Furtado chose to hide from the public eye for a while.
In mid-2005, news emerged that Nelly was actively working on her new album, entitled Loose
. Work on the album took place in various parts of the world, from Brazil to Los Angeles. The album was released in 2006.

In 2009, the singer released a new album called “Mi Plan”, which included songs in Spanish. The album was produced primarily by the singer herself, with the participation of James Bryan, Lester Mendez, Salaam Remi, The Demolition Crew, Julieta Venegas and Brian West. The first single of the record was the song “Manos Al Aire” (“Hands in the Air”), then “Más”, “Bajo otra luz”. The album reached number one on the Billboard USA Latin chart and was also certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In 2010, the album was recognized as the best album of the year at the Latin Grammy Awards.

In the same year, the remix album “Mi Plan (Remixes)” was released as an app, including a new version of the song “Fuerte”, which became the next single. Also in 2010, Nelly Furtado went on her tour of Latin America in support of the album “Mi Plan”. In 2010, Nelly recorded songs with such artists as K'os, Tiesto, NERD, and also released the first collections of hits in her career, “The Best of Nelly Furtado” (standard and deluxe versions), which included, in addition to all the famous Before this hit, three new songs: "Night Is Young", "Girlfriend in the City" and "Stars".

In September 2012, the world saw Nelly Furtado's new creation - the album Spirit Indestructible. The album received a lot of flattering reviews from critics, but the performer felt insecure in the world charts; the Canadian with Portuguese roots failed to repeat the stunning success of Loose. The first and most successful single from the album was the song Big Hoops (Bigger the better). The single was released in April and a month later Nelly presented it in a colorful performance at the Billboard Music Awards. In Belgium, the composition reached and firmly established itself in the main chart in fifth place, in the USA in sixth place in the dance chart, and in its native Canada the song was only able to reach 28th position, but this did not prevent the song from receiving a gold sales certificate in its homeland. On December 14, Nelly’s fourth (second successful) single is released - the composition Waiting for the night. In the USA and Canada the track was not appreciated, but Europe was in awe. In Russia, the song confidently took first place on the European + chart for several weeks and did not leave the top ten for several months. And already in 2013, Nelly was appreciated when she visited Poland, where she became one of those invited to the ESKA Music Awards ceremony. Furtado received a special award for her contribution to music.

On September 20, 2003, Furtado gave birth to a daughter, Nevis, named after one of the islands of the Caribbean archipelago where she was conceived. Father is musician Jasper Gehania. The couple dated for about four years, but finally broke up in 2005. On July 19, 2008, Furtado married Cuban sound engineer Demacio Castellon.[2]

She was busy in the warehouse

Once Furtado realized that she could no longer live in the spotlight, she made the choice to put a kibosh on her music career. Even though she wasn't in the booth recording new songs, she didn't stray too far from her passion.

Furtado began stocking the shelves at a friend's record store, GQ reported, and the mundane work really helped her focus and recharge. It wasn't long before the pangs to create her own music struck again, and Furtado quit her record store gig to team up with producer John Congleton for her album, The Ride.

Although she occasionally peeks out of the sand to remind her fans that she's still part of the music community, GQ said Furtado would rather "do sound installations at Art Basel" than "trot on stage and dance in front of thousands of people."

Nelly Furtado: biography

Nelly Kim Furtado is a Canadian pop star of Portuguese origin who has received worldwide recognition. The talent of the petite girl was not hindered either by her origin from a simple family or by the lack of connections in show business.

Her albums struggled

In the free era, Nelly Furtado proved that she was a versatile force to be reckoned with. The entire album was a hodgepodge of eclectic sounds that somehow cohesively created a musical masterpiece. From "Feared," which detailed the singer's fear of what others thought of her, to "No Hay Igual," where she showed off her multilingual prowess, Loose was a huge success.

Furtado followed this with the release of her Spanish album, Mi Plan, in 2009, but that project only sold 13,000 copies in its first week, according to Reuters. In 2012, she released The Spirit Indestructible, which only sold 6,000 copies in the United States in its first week and only peaked at No. 79 on the charts. After a five-year hiatus, she resurfaced in 2020 with her folk-inspired album The Ride, but it only sold 1,814 copies in its first week, according to chart data. Compared to Loose, it was clear that her subsequent albums did not connect with audiences.

Despite her terrible sales, the singer wasn't too concerned about her music's declining popularity. "I've had different scenes and I've dabbled in a lot of markets, so I see the music world as very global and I'm always looking for new opportunities and opportunities, so one chart or whatever doesn't necessarily [mean anything]." she told the Huffington Post.

Nelly Furtado now

On March 31, 2020, the Canadian singer’s next album, “The Ride,” was released. For the album, the performer chose an indie style and exclusively solo vocals. The premiere of the hits “Islands of Me”, “Pipe Dreams”, “Cold hart truth” took place back in 2020. The disc was created at the Nelstar Music recording studio.

Now Nelly Furtado devotes a lot of time to charity; she is a member of various organizations, including a foundation that opposes racism. The singer also gives concerts not only in her homeland or in Latin American countries, but also in Europe. At the end of July 2018, a video version of one of Furtado’s performances was included in the program of the IX Vienna Music Film Festival, which took place in Yekaterinburg.

Real Snow White

Some people lock themselves inside a room when traffic gets tough, while others fly away to an exotic location to help them stay centered. For Nelly Furtado, her disappearance from the public eye was deliberate, and while she was away, she retreated to a very remote location.

While speaking to The Daily Mail, the singer, who describes herself as a "bit of a hippie", said she often takes herself "into the woods" to get away from it all. She also compared herself to the real Snow White - minus those cute seven dwarfs, of course. “I need to run,” she said. “I grew up around trees and the ocean. I think I've retained a little bit of that spirit."

She said she enjoys being outside and listening to the birds, which isn't surprising considering her most popular song, "I'm Like a Bird," is about her connection to the winged animal.

Fame took her by surprise

With fame coming so quickly, it's no wonder Furtado panicked and crashed at the height of his career. “I was in no way prepared for the test that fame would bring. Thank God I was 20 when it arrived. If I had been a celebrity at 16, I would have behaved so badly. Or, I would be so depressed and trying so hard not to behave badly that I would be a complete wreck by 25,” she told the Daily Mail.
