Oleg Nikolaevich Shmatko is a cheerful warrant officer who often finds himself in ridiculous situations, but always easily gets out of them. He is loved not only by the soldiers, but also respected by his colleagues, who still laugh at him. The audience loved the character so much that the filmmakers decided to make a separate film about him. The painting “Ensign Shmatko, or E-mine” was no less successful.

About the series

The action takes place in a certain military unit, in the city near this unit, in the apartments of the characters. The life and relationships of soldiers, sergeants, warrant officers, officers and their immediate circle are shown.

It all starts with how the city major Mishka Medvedev (Alexander Lymarev) and a simple boy from the village Kuzma Sokolov (Ivan Mokhovikov), who were previously fellow countrymen, but for a long time lost their connections in civilian life, end up in the army, each for their own reason. At first, the guys have a hard time: they are beaten and insulted by the “old men,” especially Medvedev. But they quickly adapted: Sokolov found himself a friend - warrant officer Shmatko (later the most famous character in the series), and Medvedev began an affair with nurse Irina Pyleeva. But it turns out that not only Medvedev is in love with the nurse, but also the deputy unit commander for educational work, Major Kolobkov. In the 2nd part, “Bear” and “Kolobok” “fight” with each other, Kolobkov even tries to kill Medvedev. But love wins. In addition, Medvedev was discharged due to injury six months ahead of schedule. But there are still two main characters - Sokolov and Shmatko with different, but sometimes overlapping stories.

At the end of the sixteenth season, only Lieutenant Sokolov (Ivan Mokhovikov), senior warrant officer Danilyuk (Anatoly Koshcheev), Colonel Zubov (Alexey Oshurkov), Varya Sokolova (Sofya Anufrieva) and senior warrant officer Shmatko (Alexei Maklakov), some did not participate in the filming of the main series for a while (not counting the spin-off “Ensign, or “Yo-moe””).

The series uses musical works by the groups “Utah” (“Serve the Fatherland”, “Once Upon a Time”), “The End of the Film” (“Youth in Boots”, “Theme of Love”, “Ensign Blues”, “Don’t Envy”, “Demobilization”) ", "Song of the Spirits", "Alright", "Lonely Night", "Puerto Rican"), "Leprechauns" ("Soldiers") and Django "Papagan".

The final 7 episodes of the 16th season were shown from June 8 to June 17, 2010 only on the NTK channel (Kazakhstan).

The actor began acting in films as a child, since his father, a television editor, often took him with him to work. Roman got his first major role in Georgy Danelia’s film “Completely Lost,” which is an adaptation of Mark Twain’s novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.”

In the series “Soldiers,” he played the negative character of Major Kolobkov, whom the soldiers did not like, and his colleagues tried not to have anything in common with him, since he was cruel and constantly weaved intrigues. Madyanov also starred in such popular films as “The Irony of Fate. Continuation", "Our Russia: Eggs of Destiny", "Legend No. 17" and many others.

Criticism of the television series

Despite a certain popularity, the series is subject to criticism. Thus, those who served in the army note the distance shown from the real state of affairs. For example, hazing is shown in a greatly toned down form in all parts except the first season, as well as several episodes in other seasons. In some cases, a negative attitude towards contract service is shown (in Part 4 there is even a special episode where the negative characters are three contract soldiers). Also, partly in connection with the previous one, it is said that the series was created with the aim of promoting military service. On the other hand, in 2006, the series was criticized by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov. In particular, in one of the interviews he said:

...I would be careful not to say that the series shows the real life of a military unit. The series is still a comedy, and, as far as I understand, its creators did not set themselves the task of objectively and impartially depicting army reality.

To this, director Sergei Arlanov replied:

Everyone who has seen the working material of our film notes that our army turned out to be good. If we hear in the news that people in the army are shooting or hanging themselves, then our maximum is a slap on the head in the frame. This is a kind of retro look at the army. My parents remember such an army. This is not an army-prison, but a school for educating men. We have a little bit of real life in the series, we have a fairy tale with a dash of romance. We deliberately refuse things that ridicule the army, from characteristics that would belittle the military. The main task facing the artists was to make their characters as charming as possible. Some even joke that we are making a movie commissioned by the Ministry of Defense.
