Becoming a boxer
The future boxer was born in Dagestan. At the beginning of his career, there were disputes about who was the strongest fighter by nationality: some think that he is a Kumyk or a Dargin, others insist that Khabib is a Lezgin. According to the boxer himself, he is a purebred Avar.
Khabib Nurmagomedov is an Avar by nationality
Thanks to his roots, Khabib has a difficult mentality - the Avars are famous for their belligerence. Khabib is also an idol of Caucasian youth, and, despite his popularity, he never forgets his roots.
From an early age, his father raised Nurmagomedov Jr. to be faithful to his principles: he instilled in him a love of fighting and competition. Another mentor of the athlete was Javier Mendez. His influence became the final detail in the development of the future boxer.
In 2020, the athlete founded his own team, and 2 years ago he received the title of Honorary Citizen of Grozny. He was handed the car keys. Khabib was twice awarded the Order of Merit for his native country. Nurmagomedov's father and mentor also received several awards.

Despite his busy schedule, the athlete manages to develop himself. In 2020, he graduated from the 3rd year of the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.
Childhood and family
In the small town of Sildi, local guys are hereditary wrestlers, and Khabib’s family was no exception. At one time, Nurmagomedov’s father received the title of Master of Sports. There were also several titled martial arts champions in my mother's family.
Nurmagomedov has a brother. Since childhood, they trained together under the guidance of their father. At the age of three, the future champion began to study the simplest fighting techniques, and at the age of 5 he first entered the ring - Khabib’s biography as a future champion began from an early age.
Khabib Nurmagomedov in childhood with his brother
When Nurmagomedov turned 10 years old, the family moved to Makhachkala. The father recruited young athletes for mentoring. At the age of 15, the coach’s son regularly attended school, played sports, and was already beginning to show his difficult character. As a teenager, he planned to get a job as a security guard, but his father dissuaded him in time: he advised him to fully concentrate on what he loved, and not to chase easy money.
Khabib Nurmagomedov as a teenager
As a teenager, combat sambo became not only a favorite pastime for Khabib, but also a path to success. Having achieved success as a boxer, Nurmagomedov still admires sambo wrestlers Rustam Khabilov and Fedor Emelianenko.
Nurmagomedov was fond of various types of martial arts. One day he watched fights without rules and got the idea to try himself in a new direction. The father supported his son and, regardless of where his son lived and what opportunities the family had, gave him the opportunity to study fully. In 2005, Khabib already switched to combat sambo and supplemented his skills with striking techniques. In just 3 years, he perfected his technique. In 2008, Khabib entered the ring for the first time with a new technique.
Every fight was a test for Khabib - and he proudly won. He received the title of world champion in combat sambo, and in pankration he received the title of European champion. The professional MMA league has opened up new opportunities for Nurmagomedov. The first victory was brought by Khabib's famous choke hold.
Condition of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov as of May 2020
At the end of April 2020, it became known that the fighter’s father and part-time coach Abdulmanap Magomedovich Nurmagomedov was admitted to one of the hospitals in Dagestan with suspected pneumonia. There was another version - heart problems.
By the beginning of May, the condition worsened, and Nurmagomedov Sr. was urgently taken by special flight to the capital and hospitalized in one of the Moscow clinics.
Khabib did not comment on his father’s health for a long time, but wrote on his Instagram on May 5 about the test:
This is not how we imagined Ramadan 2020. This is not how we imagined spring in May. This is not how we imagined the test itself.
A little earlier, I urged everyone to take care of themselves and their loved ones, and also to devote time to their family and parents.
According to information as of May 16 from Ramazan Rabadanov, a friend of the Nurmagomedov family and sports commentator, Abdulmanap suffered a stroke and two-thirds of his lungs were affected. Doctors performed heart surgery on him and put him on a ventilator.
Khabib Nurmagomedov's message about his father and coronavirus
Khabib himself confirmed that his father’s test for coronavirus was positive and addressed his compatriots.
The condition is still serious, but everyone hopes for recovery. Even his longtime rivals support Khabib.
First success
My professional journey began in 2008. The fight took place with Ukrainian boxer Vusal Bayramov. Khabib won. In 2008, several more fights took place in Moscow. By unanimous decision of the judges, the victory was awarded to Nurmagomedov. At 23, the fighter becomes the youngest champion in UFC history.
The Americans appreciated Khabib's skill as soon as they saw his behavior and self-confidence in the ring. The athlete received the nickname Eagle for his temper and enchanting victories. The symbol of an athlete is a shepherd's hat. This is how the champion pays tribute to his roots. In interviews, he repeatedly expressed gratitude to his family.
History of the nickname
Khabib shared the story of how he had to look for a suitable nickname for himself. Since the symbol of Dagestan is an eagle, the fighter decided to call himself a proud and strong bird. The chosen symbol became a direct association with the fighter. His nickname is known not only in Dagestan, but throughout the world.
Childhood and youth
Nurmagomedov was born in the Dagestan village of Sildi on September 20, 1988. He is a native Avar by nationality. Many of Khabib’s relatives, including his father, who became his son’s coach, are professional wrestlers.
Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, Khabib’s father, became the champion of Ukraine in the distant 90s, and his uncle Nurmagomed Nurmagomedov at one time received the title of world champion in sports sambo. The street on which the future UFC champion’s home stood was named after him. There are also relatives on the maternal side who hold the titles of masters of sports in wrestling.

Khabib Nurmagomedov as a child with his cousin
The boy began training at the age of 5. His younger brother Abubakar, who later also became a professional athlete, was always present at training with him.
When Khabib was 12 years old, the family moved to Makhachkala, where his father continued his activities with young people, organizing a sports camp for talented teenagers. The young man’s coach during this period was Saidakhmed Magomedov, who trained the boys in freestyle wrestling. Over the course of several years, the future champion learned the techniques of judo, combat sambo and other types of martial arts, won the world championship in combat sambo twice and once in grappling.
Later, Abdulmanap described his sons’ childhood in the book “Father,” co-authored with Igor Rybakov. This is a kind of manual on how to raise champions in sports, life and business.
Why did the fight between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson fail?
While the coronavirus was raging in the world, UFC fans were waiting for the main issue of 2020 to be resolved, and the exact date of the Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov fight would finally appear.
And the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which organizes mixed martial arts fights, was desperately looking for an opportunity to arrange a duel between Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson. But the US and Russian authorities have banned the organization of mass events on their territories until the viral epidemic subsides.
Meanwhile, fate itself seems to be opposing the clash between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson - since 2020, 5 attempts to organize the fight have already failed. Coronavirus was the reason for cancellation #5.
- December 2020: Nurmagomedova was injured in training, and the fight scheduled for the 11th of the last month of 2020 did not take place.
- April 2020: Ferguson was diagnosed with lung problems - the second attempt to organize a fight on April 16 failed.
- March 2020: Nurmagomedov overdid it during the weight cut before the fight and ended up in a hospital bed instead of in the ring on March 4.
- April 2020: Ferguson injured his knee joint and was treated instead of the fight scheduled for April 7.
The UFC did not back down until the last minute and declared: canceling the fight in 2020 between Ferguson and Nurmagomedov is out of the question! However, fate had its own way.
At 22, Nurmagomedov became a two-time world champion in combat sambo.
Nurmagomedov had a successful amateur career. He competed in various types of martial arts and achieved high results. Khabib became the Russian champion in hand-to-hand combat, the European champion in pankration and the world champion in grappling.
After several injuries, Nurmagomedov almost ended his sports career. Khabib wanted to get a job as a security guard to start earning money and helping his family. The father dissuaded Nurmagomedov.
Khabib achieved his greatest success in combat sambo. In 2010, two world championships in this sport were held at once - in April in Kyiv and in December in Moscow. Nurmagomedov won both tournaments. In Kyiv he competed in the weight category up to 74 kg, in Moscow - up to 82 kg.
The world championships that Nurmagomedov won are not considered official in Russia. They were organized by the World Combat Sambo Federation (WCSF). The official championships are held by the International Sambo Federation (FIAS). Khabib did not participate in tournaments under the auspices of FIAS.
Is Khabib Nurmagomedov stripped of his UFC belt?
Tony's new opponent was American Justin Gaethje, to whom he lost. As a result, Gaethje became the new contender for the fight with Khabib. And Nurmagomedov is deprived of the belt, since Justin became the interim champion.
Khabib himself missed UFC 249, but supported Tony after the loss on Twitter:
“Everything that happened is in the past. Keep your head up, Tony. I hope everything goes well for you and your family. When your son grows up, he will be proud of you."
And American Tony Ferguson responded to him on his Twitter and Instagram:
“Respect. You still owe me 20 push-ups. Glad your dad is feeling better. See you soon, baby. Get ready for the real ending."
Nurmagomedov in the UFC
For the first time in UFC history, the youngest fighter entered the ring, who was then barely 23 years old. To the surprise of everyone, Khabib defeated all his opponents without losing a single fight. He defeated such eminent opponents as Tibau, Tavares and Healy.
In a short time, the rating of the undefeated Avar grew rapidly. He was among the TOP 5 strongest UFC fighters.
In 2020, a sensational fight took place between Nurmagomedov and Johnson. The entire world press wrote about him, highlighting the merits of both one and the other participant. During the fight, Khabib managed to perform a painful hold, which forced his opponent to surrender, admitting defeat.
It is worth noting that on the eve of this fight, after the weigh-in, the Russian met with Conor McGregor, the leader of the UFC, whom Nurmagomedov tried to provoke. It got to the point that a fight almost broke out between the fighters. Since then, it has become clear to everyone that Khabib dreams of fighting Conor.
In 2020, Nurmagomedov met in the ring with American Al Iaquinta. By a mutual decision of the judges, the Dagestani managed to win another important victory. An interesting fact is that Khabib is the first Russian to become UFC champion. When he returned to his homeland, his compatriots greeted him as a national hero.
The fight between Nurmagomedov and Gaethje in the fall of 2020
Now Khabib Nurmagomedov will meet Justin Gaethje in the fall for the lightweight title. Date of the fight Nurmagomedov vs. Gaethje is still unknown for sure, but most likely it will take place in September. The fighter himself commented on the news about the emergence of a new opponent on Instagram - he is ready to fight.
Read what Gaethje says about the upcoming fight in the article about it.
Nurmagomedov's preparation for fights
Avar is preparing for the next fight and says that he has no plans to retire yet. Whether Ferguson will ever become his rival remains to be seen. There is a possibility that Khabib will want to fight St-Pierre after Gaethje.
The champion prepares for battles with full responsibility. Each training begins with a run, then practicing punches in the ring. Khabib practices handstand and headstand. After training he always drinks a lot of water.
Before a fight, if Khabib has gained excess weight, he goes on a special diet. The diet includes greens, fruits, and cereals. He refuses carbonated drinks and flour products. And 36 hours before the fight, he gains his usual weight and becomes larger and stronger than his opponent.
Before fights you have to lose up to 8 kg. Typically, a wrestler’s weight during training varies within 80 kg, and during the off-season it is 85-88 kg. Nurmagomedov’s maximum weight of 90 kg was recorded in 2020, the minimum and acceptable for a fight is 70 kg.
Career
When Khabib was 23 years old, he was invited to the famous American mixed martial arts organization UFC.
In 2012, Khabib performed for the first time under the auspices of the UFC. The fight with Kamal Shalarus ended in the third round with a victory for the Russian.
Khabib Nurmagomedov and Al Iaquinta
Then there was a series of victories over the strongest athletes such as:
- Thiago Tavares;
- Gleison Tibau;
- Pat Healy;
- Rafael Dos Anjos.
Khabib competes in lightweight. The Dagestani always chose the strongest fighters as opponents. He turned to UFC President Dane White with a request to give him a fight with B. Jane Penn, a legendary UFC athlete. And what was his surprise when Jane himself refused to fight him.

Nurmagomedov Khabib Abdulmanapovich
Russian mixed martial arts fighter, nicknamed “Eagle” among athletes, is a native of Dagestan. After a fight with Al Iaquinta in April 2020, the athlete became the first Russian in UFC history to hold a championship title. At the beginning of 2020 he was disqualified. On September 7, 2020, Nurmagomedov defeated American Dustin Poirier in three rounds in a fight in Abu Dhabi and defended the UFC lightweight champion title.
Biography
Khabib was born on September 20, 1988 into a traditional Avar family from the small mountain village of Sildi, Tsumadinsky district of Dagestan. Many local men were hereditary wrestlers, and Khabib’s relatives were no exception.
His father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, was the champion of Ukraine in freestyle wrestling and sambo. Father's brother - Nurmagomed Nurmagomedov - world champion in sports sambo in 1992. And his uncle on his mother’s side is a master of sports in freestyle wrestling. My father is not only a wrestler, but also a freestyle wrestling coach. Trained 11 world champions. It was his father who became Khabib’s first coach, under whose guidance he practiced martial arts from the age of 5.
“For as long as I can remember, I spent all my time on the mat,” the fighter recalled. Khabib has a brother, Abubakar, who is 1.5 years younger. They trained together (Abubakar also became a professional fighter, competed in the WSOF, and signed a contract with the UFC).
In 2001, the family moved to Makhachkala. There he continued his training. “Father gathered us all together, about 15 relatives in Makhachkala. And we lived for seven or eight years, all under one roof. We ate together, trained together and grew up to be worthy guys,” said the athlete.
Somehow, Khabib came across a tape with fights without rules and he himself wanted to try himself in something new, namely, martial arts associated with striking techniques, although he continued to engage in freestyle wrestling. By that time, my father had already changed the type of martial arts and taught the guys combat sambo. “I also wanted to, but he said that I first needed to learn how to wrestle in a jacket and sent me to his friend, Honored Judo Coach of Russia Jafar Jafarov. I trained with him for a year and a half, and in 2005 I already switched to combat sambo,” said Khabib.
In 2020, with the support of Zivuyadin, Magomedov founded his own team “Eagles MMA”. In 2020, he called on Putin to help the arrested businessman.
In 2020, Nurmagomedov addressed the public with complaints about the torture of Akim Kuliev in Dagestan.
Khabib Nurmagomedov is one of the most popular Russian athletes. For example, the number of subscribers to his Instagram is approaching 6 million and this is an absolute record. Khabib beat Maria Sharapova in December 2020.
Khabib professes Islam, does not drink, does not smoke, regularly makes pilgrimages to Mecca with his brother and strictly observes all the basic commandments of the Koran, including not fighting during Ramadan.
Height: 177 centimeters.
Weight: 70 kilograms.
Arm span: 178 centimeters.
Married, a daughter was born in June 2020, and a son in December 2020.
Career
At 23, Nurmagomedov became the youngest Russian fighter in UFC history. On January 21, 2012, Khabib had his first fight, which ended in victory over Kamal Shalorus - in the 3rd round, Khabib performed a choke hold, forcing the enemy to surrender. The Americans immediately noted the very high level of Nurmagomedov’s wrestling training.
On July 7, 2012, Khabib fought his second fight under the auspices of the UFC against one of the best Brazilian lightweights, Gleison Tibau, one of the TOP 15 best lightweight fighters in the world at UFC 148 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Russian dominated throughout all three rounds and won by unanimous decision.
On January 19, 2013, the fighter met with another famous Brazilian lightweight Thiago Tavares in Brazil in the city of Sao Paulo at the grand UFC on FX 7 tournament. On the main card of the tournament, he made an uppercut, knocked down the Brazilian, and then finished him off on the ground with his elbows at 1:55 of the first round.
He also stated that he wants to fight one of the best fighters on the planet, Nate Diaz, on April 20 at UFC on FOX 7 in San Jose, California. But, since Nate Diaz received Josh Thompson as his opponent, Khabib met with a promising fighter from the USA - Abel Trujillo. The fight took place on May 26 at UFC 160 in Las Vegas. Khabib dominated all three rounds and won by unanimous decision.
After defeating Trujillo, Khabib asked Dana White (UFC President) via Twitter to give him a fight against legendary UFC fighter BJ Penn. But due to B.J. Penn’s refusal, the UFC offered Khabib a fight with Pat “Bam-Bam” Healy (at that time included in the Top 10 of the UFC rating). Khabib agreed and the fight took place in Toronto (Canada) at UFC 165. Khabib was better in the first and third rounds, winning by unanimous decision. Dana White noted the Russian in an interview after the fight, saying that he likes Khabib’s fights.
On April 19, 2014, Khabib met in the cage with the 5th ranked fighter in the UFC Rafael dos Anjos at the UFC on FOX 11 tournament in Orlando (Florida). The fight was very similar to the fight against Abil Trujillo, Khabib dominated all three rounds both in the stand-up and in the fight and won by unanimous decision.
On July 5, 2014, Khabib suffered a knee injury (ruptured cruciate ligament), which forced him out for one year before his fight against Tony Ferguson. In 2020, Khabib broke a rib and was out again indefinitely. A fight against Tony Ferguson was planned for April 16, 2020 as part of the UFC on FOX 19 tournament, but due to an injury, Tony Ferguson withdrew from the tournament, and Darrell Horcher was chosen as Nurmagomedov's opponent, the fight with whom was supposed to mark Khabib's return to the Octagon after 2 year break.
On April 16, Nurmagomedov defeated Darrell Horcher by technical knockout in the second round. Following this, Khabib was scheduled to face current UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 or UFC 206, and Dana White confirmed this on Twitter. However, on September 26, it was announced that Alvarez would defend his title against Conor McGregor.
On November 12, 2020, at UFC 205 in New York, Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated American fighter Michael Johnson via armbar submission (kimura). Throughout the entire fight, Khabib dominated Michael and, as a result, in the third round the judge stopped the fight, since the opponent could not even knock on the floor, being in a clamped position due to a painful hold. Before this fight, after the weigh-in, Khabib had an argument with the Irish fighter Conor McGregor, who also had his title fight there. Security did not allow the verbal altercation to turn into a brawl.
In January 2017, it was announced that on March 4, as part of the UFC 209 show in Las Vegas (USA), Khabib Nurmagomedov would fight for the interim lightweight champion title against American Tony Ferguson. The winner of the fight will become the main contender for the lightweight championship, which is held by Irishman Conor McGregor.
“On March 4, I will do everything to make my dream come true, and I will finally fight for the belt and win it,” Nurmagomedov commented on the news of the fight with Ferguson. However, the fight with Ferguson was canceled due to Nurmagomedov’s absence from the weigh-in due to illness. According to his father and trainer Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the fighter was taken to the hospital due to liver problems or kidney stones. The fights with Ferguson were canceled four times.
In 2020, Khabib had his only fight, but it was a very spectacular one. On December 30, 2020, in Las Vegas, as part of the UFC 219 show, Khabib Nurmagomedov won a convincing victory over Brazilian Edson Barboza.
Finally, on April 8, 2020, Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated American Al Iaquinta to become the UFC lightweight champion. Nurmagomedov became the first UFC champion from Russia. The fight lasted all five rounds, during which Khabib dominated. At the end of the fight, the judges unanimously gave the victory to Nurmagomedov with a score of 50-44, 50-43, 50-43.
Among Khabib Nurmagomedov’s other achievements: finalist of the Russian Championship, winner of the Cup and champion of Eurasia in hand-to-hand combat, champion of Russia, two-time world champion in combat sambo, European champion in pankration, world champion in grappling according to NAGA Grappling. He also took part in several M-1 Global tournaments, in competitions under the auspices of other organizations.
Unsportsmanlike scandal
In August and September, a verbal battle between Khabib Nurmagomedov and the musicians broke out. Moreover, the fighter performed extremely hard, with knockout blows, and on the part of the musicians there were rather attempts to enter the clinch.
It all started with concerts of the Azerbaijani rap duo HammAli & Navai in Makhachkala. Khabib posted a video from the performance on his Instagram (5.3 million subscribers) and accompanied it with the following comment: “Modern Dagestan. Is this what our righteous predecessors bequeathed to us? He was supported by another Dagestani fighter Islam Makhachev, who wrote the same comment: “Fuel for hell.”
At the very beginning of September, the Black Star music label (founder Timati) canceled the Makhachkala concerts of two of its rappers - MC Doni and Yegor Creed. Label representatives explained Fr. “We don’t want to risk the safety of people who want to go to concerts,” Black Star said on Instagram. Khabib Nurmagomedov responded unyieldingly to the label's statement, writing: "Not a big loss."
After this, Timati directly linked the cancellation of concerts with the influence of Nurmagomedov. “Our songs contain love lyrics. I understand that many songs are not close to you... but to support the wave that artists should not come because you personally don’t like it is probably a little wrong,” Timati said in a video message he recorded to Nurmagomedov. On September 11, Khabib responded with a completely angry post on Instagram: “Every creature will answer for its words.” Since the post did not point to anyone specifically, it remained unclear what provoked Habib’s anger.
Two days later, Ramzan Kadyrov tried himself as a judge in the ring: “Khabib is losing weight, he is nervous, so you can understand him. It’s better that guests come to us, we must develop the Caucasus, we must develop tourism. Therefore, let’s live together, my beloved Dagestanis.”
After this, rappers Eldzhey and Stas Mikhailov managed to cancel their concerts in Makhachkala.
Defeat Conor McGregor and disqualification
The main event at UFC 229 was announced on August 3, 2018 at a press conference for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor took place. Tickets were sold out in 3 minutes when sales started on August 17.
On October 6, 2020, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Irishman Conor McGregor in four rounds, retaining the lightweight championship belt.
Immediately after the fight, Nurmagomedov had a verbal conflict with McGregor's jiu-jitsu coach Dennis Dillon, who was near the Octagon, and Khabib jumped over the fence and rushed at Dillon. A massive brawl broke out, during which members of Nurmagomedov’s team jumped into the ring, some of whom exchanged blows with McGregor. The championship belt was not awarded to Nurmagomedov in the ring, and he, like the losing contender, was taken to the back rooms of the stadium.
After the fight, the fighter publicly apologized for starting a brawl and stated that McGregor provoked him with his insults. However, at the end of January, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (USA) decided to disqualify Nurmagomedov for 9 months (starting from the date of the fight) and fine him half a million dollars.
In February, Nurmagomedov paid not only his own, but also fines for team members Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Zubair Tukhugov in the amount of 50 thousand dollars.
Return to the Octagon
On September 7, 2020, in Abu Dhabi, Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated American Dustin Poirier in three rounds by choke and defended the UFC lightweight champion title. Poirier has been competing professionally since 2009, and since April 2020 has been the interim UFC champion in this weight category.
