“50 Shades of Grey”: actors were selected as if they were going to fly into space

Plot of the film

Anastacia and Christian are the main characters of the saga “50 shades of gray” (part 2). Actors D. Dornan and D. Johnson played these characters. In this part of the film, the heroine breaks up with her lover after learning about his unusual sexual preferences. The girl wanted to change her loved one and try to improve the relationship, but instead of compromise, she came across a wall of misunderstanding on the part of her lover. Anastasia despaired and left Christian and decided to start life from scratch.

Having got a job as a personal assistant to Jack Heyde, the girl goes about her business, trying to drive away stupid thoughts about her lover.

Christian is trying to improve relations - first he writes by email, then sends an invitation to visit a painting exhibition. Anastacia goes to the exhibition herself, but still decides to give Christian a chance.

Jack, the main character’s boss, tries to put pressure on her and fire her, but this leads to Gray buying out the entire company and freezing the accounts to protect his beloved.

Elena is the woman who abused Christian and is the reason he loves BDSM. She understands that the young man has fallen in love, and tries in every possible way to prevent the happiness of two hearts.

There was a lot of talk among Internet users about when Part 2 of “50 Shades of Gray” would be released, but now it is known for sure that the next part of the saga is timed for Valentine’s Day 2017.

Film adaptation of “50 Shades of Gray” and cast

When the film adaptation of the novel was first discussed, a lot of controversy arose regarding how a pornographic film could be made for general screening, not to mention how to find worthy actors for this. After all, in fact, the content of the film should have been several times more censored than “9 ½ Weeks” and “Basic Instinct”. And anyway, where can I find a new young Sharon Stone or Kim Basinger? Over the years, many options were offered, but, as a result, director Sam Taylor-Johnson chose Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson.

Jamie Dornan was far from a popular actor before this. He played in such films as “Marie Antoinette” and “The Flight Home.” He also starred in the TV series “Once Upon a Time” as the sheriff, “The Collapse,” and “New Worlds.”

Dakota Johnson has a more extensive filmography, but has also played less popular roles. The most famous roles are in the films “Macho and Nerd” and “The Social Network”.

So for these actors, starring in Fifty Shades of Gray is literally a career boost. Although not all moviegoers and fans of the novel appreciated this choice. This is especially true for Dakota. Most believe that she does not convey the traits and character of the main character at all. But Jamie played 100% - both character traits, appearance, and charisma - everything corresponds to the true Christian Gray.

As for the other heroes. Christian Gray's brother Eliot was played by Luke Grimes, and his mother Marcia Gay Harden. Anastasia's friend was played by Eliosa Mumford.

The world premiere of “50 Shades of Gray” took place on February 9, 2020, in Russia on February 12.

Jamie Dornan

The actor of Irish descent is known throughout the world as the performer of the role of Christian Gray in the saga “Fifty Shades of Grey”.

Born in May 1982 in Belfast (UK). As a child, he played sports, and then became interested in theater and acting. The actor's mother died of cancer when Jamie was only 16 years old.

After school, Dornan studied acting and studied in London, and also played in the musical group Sons of Jim. The team broke up in 2008.

He made his debut in the film industry in 2005 thanks to filming in the film “Marie Antoinette”.

For several months in a row, the actor’s social networks could not withstand the emotional onslaught of fans demanding to know when Part 2 of “50 Shades of Gray” would be released. Jamie did not confess, and fans of the film found out about everything after the date was revealed.

Jamie Dornan is married and the couple has two children.

Production

By early 2012, several Hollywood studios were preparing presentations to the author and her agent in order to obtain the rights to shoot a film based on the Fifty Shades trilogy. Sony Pictures, Paramount and Universal, as well as Mark Wahlberg's company, wanted to acquire the rights to the film. Ultimately, Universal Pictures and Focus Features acquired the rights to the trilogy in March 2012. The novel's author, E. L. James, tried to gain some creative control over the film adaptation process, but it remains unclear how successful she was. Mark Bomback was hired to write the script for the film. Entertainment Weekly estimated the film's budget at $40 million.

Until May 9, 2013, the studio considered Joe Wright to direct, but he declined due to scheduling conflicts. Other directors considered were Patty Jenkins, Bill Condon, Bennett Miller and Steven Soderbergh. In June 2013, E. L. James announced Sam Taylor-Johnson as the film's director.

Casting

Bret Easton Ellis stated that Robert Pattinson was James's original choice for the role of Christian Grey. On September 2, 2013, author E. L. James said that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson had been cast as Christian Gray and Anastasia Steele.

The studio initially wanted to cast Ryan Gosling as Christian, but he was not interested. Hunnam initially ruled out the role of Christian, but later reconsidered it after meeting with studio heads. Hunnam said: “I felt really intrigued and excited. I read the first book to get a clearer idea of who this character is, and I felt even more excited about the prospect of recreating him."

On October 12, 2013, Universal Pictures announced that Hunnam had left the film. Alexander Skarsgard, Jamie Dornan, Theo James, Francois Arnault, Scott Eastwood, Luke Brackey and Billy Magnussen were at the top of the list to replace Hunnam as Christian Gray.

On October 23, 2013, Jamie Dornan was cast as Christian Grey.

Filming

Filming began on December 1, 2013 in Vancouver. Bentall 5 was used as the Gray Enterprises building. The University of British Columbia served as the setting for Washington State University Vancouver, where Ana studied. The Fairmont Vancouver was used as the Heathman Hotel. Production officially ended on February 21, 2014.

Reshoots with Dornan and Johnson took place in Vancouver during the week of October 13, 2014.

Dakota Johnson

The actress was born in Texas in October 1989. In her family, all relatives on her mother’s side were actors, and the mother herself, after a divorce from the girl’s own father, began to live with Antonio Banderas.

That is why Dakota’s choice of profession was predetermined. From early childhood, the girl played in school plays, was interested in self-expression and creativity, and danced and sang well.

In 2006, Dakota signed a contract with a modeling agency and works with MANGO. The actress’s filmography begins with the film “A Woman Without Rules,” in which she starred in 1999. The film “50 Shades of Gray” brought fame, in which the girl played the role of an innocent student of the Faculty of Philology, in love with a millionaire.

After the release of the first part, she starred in other films: “My Friend is Gay,” “Black Mass” and others.

Currently in active search. Like her colleague on the set, Dakota did not tell anyone when the 2nd part of “50 Shades of Gray” would be released, even close people. The actors firmly decided that they would keep this information secret from everyone until the official statement from the film's authors.

Kim Basinger

In the film “Fifty Shades Darker,” the actress played the role of Elena, the main character’s first lover, who opened the world of pain and torture to him.

Kim was born in December 1953 in Athens (USA). My father worked as a jazz musician, and my mother was a water ballet dancer.

50 shades of gray part 2 actors

In high school, the girl actively took part in beauty contests and won titles. After graduation, she traveled to New York, participated in the Miss America competition and enjoyed success as a model.

Kim began attending acting classes after realizing that beauty is not eternal and a modeling career cannot always generate income. He made his film debut in a small role in the TV series Charlie's Angels.

Divorced from Alec Baldwin, she has a daughter. Continues to act in films. It is noteworthy that, unlike her colleagues, Kim did not know when Part 2 of “50 Shades of Gray” would be released, so she was in relative peace during the hype around the film.

Reviews

The film received mostly negative reviews from film critics: on the website Rotten Tomatoes, 25% of reviews were positive with an average rating of 4.2 points out of 10[7].

Soon after the premiere, film experts and anyone who wants to get an adequate idea of the cult work of E. L. James should better re-read the novel itself[6]. Reviews from early viewers ranged from “boring softcore porn” to “an exciting, mind-bending Western.”[8]

Unlike a novel, where the author is associated with the character, a feature of the film adaptation is the view of events from an outside third person. Due to this circumstance, the perceptions, emotions, thoughts and experiences of Anastacia known to the reader become inaccessible to the viewer, which somewhat impoverishes the psychological aspect of the film. The reviews also note plot parallels and similar descriptions of the monstrous essence of the Dominant in the novel and film with the libretto of the musical “The Phantom of the Opera” - another modern variation of the classic European fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast”[9].

Sales

The book's erotic content and sales statistics (majority of buyers were married women over 30) led to the book being given the nickname "mommy porn", which was subsequently used in the press.[12][13] Another impressive part of the audience were teenage girls and students[13][14][15]. On August 1, 2012, the administration of amazon.co.uk announced that Fifty Shades of Gray had surpassed the entire Harry Potter series in terms of sales, as a result, E. L. James became the best-selling author there[16].

The success of the novel Fifty Shades of Gray was largely determined by the sale of versions for electronic media. It became the first book to sell one million copies on Amazon Kindle.[7] This is partly due to the fact that people may be embarrassed to buy printed erotic publications in a store and choose electronic copies, which can also be easily read on electronic devices in transport[17][18].

In April 2012, E. L. James was named one of Time's

[19][20].

In 2013, a series of toys for adults was released based on the 50 Shades of Gray trilogy, officially endorsed by E. L. James. It included toys for adults and accessories used by the main characters of the trilogy, Anastacia and Christian[21]. The official Fifty Shades of Gray lingerie collection is created under the Bluebella brand, the essence of the fashion concept is a combination of confidence and pleasure[22].

Film adaptation of “Fifty Shades Darker”

But the story doesn’t end there, because work is currently underway on the continuation of the “Fifty Shades Darker” trilogy. And there is still a lot of controversy and rumors here. One of these rumors is that Dornan will no longer film with Dakota. The reason is simple - he has a wife and two children. In addition, his wife does not like so much attention from fans to her husband. According to rumors, Dornan’s wife herself did not watch the film on principle. But we repeat once again - these are rumors. There is no official information about Dornan's participation in the continuation of the trilogy.

But there is confirmed information that the sequel will be shot by a different director, due to multiple disagreements between Taylor-Johnson and Erica James.
