Ralph Fiennes - biography and personal life

The actor's childhood

The British star's real name is Rafe Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes. He was born in Ipswich, located in the English county of Suffolk, UK. The actor’s parents were creative people, but had nothing to do with the world of cinema: father Mark Fiennes is a famous photographer, and Rafe’s mother, Jennifer Lush, is a writer and artist. The family had many children - seven. Fiennes has three younger brothers named Joseph, Magnus and Jacob, and two younger sisters, Martha and Sophie. In addition, there is a brother, Michael, whom Fiennes' parents adopted at the age of eleven. The family's relatives are the British royal family. However, the glorious and ancient family of English aristocrats did not have much of a chance to become famous. Everything changed only with the birth of Rafe, after whom other extremely talented children were born into the family. This is how the Fiennes family became famous throughout the world.

About the artist

Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes – theater and film actor, director of the film “The Invisible Woman” (2013) was born on December 22, 1962 in the UK. Rafe is the first child in a large family. His parents had quite creative professions, which can be considered a prerequisite for the choice of young Fiennes’ future career. A little later, he had five brothers and sisters, each of whom is also related to the film industry. Now it becomes clear how Rafe managed to create such a rich filmography - the love of cinema is in his blood.

The Fiennes family moved often, but this did not stop the boy from finishing school well and starting his studies at a design college. Having received his diploma, the young man himself moved to London and submitted documents to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. After graduating in 1987, he began his career at the British Royal National Theatre. The future actor with a large filmography clearly knew what he wanted and confidently walked towards the goal.

The path to an acting career

The father of the family did not limit himself to photography and was engaged in home renovation, which is why the family constantly moved. Rafe had trouble making friends; many of his classmates simply seemed boring to him. When Ralph Fiennes graduated from school, the family went to London. There he went to college, where he devoted himself to the study of art and design. But his vocation could not help but make itself known - he soon entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. This institution is the most prestigious place to study acting in the UK. In 1986, he completed his studies and began working at the Royal National Theater.

Star Trek actor and films

Thinking about his future, Ralph Fiennes decides on painting, because he has been interested in drawing since childhood. He enters the College of Art and Design, but after a year he realizes that dramatic acting is more interesting. He graduates from London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, one of the most famous theater schools in the world.

“At first I thought he was a complete idiot,” recalls Neil Dudgeon, who became friends with Fiennes as students. “He repeated the same phrase: “My name is Rafe,” which, it turns out, was the way to pronounce his old name, which in modern transcription sounds like Ralph. I learned that the Fiennes' ancestors were once very rich, but from generation to generation money left the family, and in the end, of all the values, they retained only the aristocracy of spirit: decency, the ability to compassion and love. Ralph was lucky: he was very loved as a child.”

Then he began working at the Royal National Theater, and since 1988 he has been a member of the Royal Shakespeare Theater troupe. He masters the classical repertoire, talentedly performing many roles - from Romeo to King Lear. Theater criticism rejoices. Thanks to this success, the actor's film career begins.

The very first films brought Fiennes fame. In 1993, an invitation was received from Steven Spielberg himself. Fiennes plays the challenging role of concentration camp commandant Amon Goeth in the film Schindler's List. The audience is amazed by his performance and the amazing charm of the Nazi; they are not even aware of the stunning resemblance to the real Amon Goeth.

Ralph gains worldwide fame and an Oscar nomination. His career begins to take off; he is invited to Broadway to play the role of Hamlet, for which he receives a Tony Award. In 1996, new success: the drama film “The English Patient” was released. For the role of Count László Almásy, the actor was again nominated for an Oscar. Then sister Martha plans to shoot a film - “Onegin” and invites Fiennes to play the main role. His partner is the charming Liv Tyler.

Academic education allows Ralph to perform in any role. He stars in melodramas, thrillers, and fairy tales. He gained fame among young viewers after working in three parts of Harry Potter. No less popular films with his participation are “Lie Down in Bruges” (2008), “Clash of the Titans” (2010), “Wrath of the Titans” (2012). In 2012, Ralph visited Moscow to present the film “Coriolanus” to the capital’s residents. In it, Fiennes acted as an actor and director.

Personal life of Ralph Fiennes

The actor does not like to talk about his personal life. He was married to actress Alex Kingston from 1993 to 1997, before his marriage ended in divorce.

First roles

Immediately after completing his studies, Ralph Fiennes began to receive good roles. At the Royal National Theater he was lucky enough to play in productions called Henry the Sixth, Love's Labour's Lost and King Lear. And already in 1990, the actor first appeared in films. His first role was participation in the mini-series Prime Suspect, the creators of which received Emmy and BAFTA awards for their work. The start of my career was successful. In 1992, Rafe starred in the film Wuthering Heights, based on the novel of the same name by Emily Brontë, and in 1993 he received a role in the film The Child of Macona. Each of the works was successful, but they did not bring widespread fame to the actor. The situation changed somewhat when Ralph Fiennes took part in the film Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia, where he played the main character, Thomas Edward Lawrence. For this work, the actor received his first award - an Emmy.

Biography

Ralph Fiennes likes to talk about how his last name sounds different in different countries: in some places they call him Fiennes, in others Finnes, and in others they call him Fiennes.

Even in Fiennes' native England, 90% of people manage to pronounce his last name incorrectly.

Ralph Fiennes was born on December 22, 1962 in Ipswich (England). His father was a farmer, and his mother was an artist and writer. Ralph lived on a farm until he was six, and then his father, Mark Fiennes, decided that he should look for something more profitable. The head of the family decided to take up photography. The Fiennes family moved to Ireland and began to lead a nomadic lifestyle: the money earned from photography was not enough for the Fiennes, and the father worked part-time in construction work. As soon as the next order for home renovation was completed, a change of place of residence followed in search of a new job.

“We were very, very poor,” recalls Ralph. “My parents had to count every shilling, and gradually, in search of a better life, we reached London.”

By that time, Fiennes himself had already graduated from school and entered the College of Art and Design in Chelsea. It must be said that Ralph was interested in theater, writing, and drawing from childhood, so that after studying at college for only a year, he entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, the most prestigious theatrical institution in England.

After graduation, Fiennes got a job at the Royal Shakespeare Theater, and within a year he was receiving rave reviews from critics for his performances in King Lear and Troilus and Cressidy. Ralph owes his film career to the success of these performances: once director Chris Meno saw his performance on stage and invited the young actor to film one of the episodes of the television series “Prime Suspect.” For his role in the next TV movie, “Dangerous Man Lawrence After Arabia,” Fiennes received an Emmy Award. After this, the actor only had to choose something more interesting from the flurry of filming offers that fell upon him. He stars in Peter Greenaway's McCon's Child and then accepts Steven Spielberg's offer to star in Schindler's List.

In Schindler's List, Fiennes portrays Amon Hoth, a concentration camp commandant who executed tens of thousands of prisoners. For his role as Goth, Ralph Fiennes is nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, but in the end the statuette goes to Tommy Lee Jones. The actor's next works - "The English Patient" and three parts of "Harry Potter" - made Fiennes a real star of world cinema.

The actor does not like to talk about his personal life. It is known that since his college days he dated Alex Kingston; the couple got married in 1993, but four years later their marriage broke up. English tabloids also wrote about Fiennes' relationship with American actress Ellen Barkin.

Dramatic image

1993 brought more than just an award. In the same year, aspiring actor Ralph Fiennes was noticed by Steven Spielberg. The director offered the Briton a role in his large-scale project called “Schindler's List.” Rafe had to reincarnate as a cruel Nazi, the commandant of the concentration camp Amon Goeth. The difficult role was worth every minute of effort - Ralph Fiennes became a world famous actor. In addition, he was highly praised by various film academies. He received an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor, an MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Actor of the Year, and awards from the Boston, Fort Worth, Chicago and London film critic communities. Many newspapers and magazines wrote about Rife, and even those who had not seen other films with the actor’s participation remembered his name after “Schindler’s List,” which became a cult favorite over the years.

Ralph Fiennes brought his mistress to Russia

On Monday, May 23, the opening ceremony of the Tarkovsky Film Festival “Mirror” took place in Ivanovo. This year, the regional film forum attracted special attention from journalists, because British actor Ralph Fiennes, Voldemort from the Harry Potter film saga and star of the films “The English Patient” and “Schindler’s List,” became the chairman of the festival jury.

Fiennes arrived in Ivanovo on Sunday evening. After the actor was checked into the best room of the most expensive Ivanovo hotel, he did not appear in public until the press conference that opened the festival.

Rafe came to the press conference in an expensive dark suit. The actor did not speak frankly with the press; he answered journalists’ questions briefly and dryly.

Fiennes has a reputation as a very private person; he does not like informal photographs, much less interference into his personal life. Therefore, in Ivanovo, the actor carefully hid his companion.

The elegant brunette, who followed Fiennes but tried not to get into the frame, reacted painfully every time when a camera click was heard next to her. Fiennes seemed even more dissatisfied, whose assistant demanded that filming be stopped immediately.

Fiennes' companion turned out to be British aristocrat Amanda Harlech, one of the most stylish women in England. In her homeland she is called Karl Lagerfeld's muse. As Komsomolskaya Pravda learned, Harlech and Fiennes settled in the same room in Ivanovo.

It's clear why Fiennes didn't want to be seen with Harlech. In England, their difficult relationship has been written about for four years now. They began dating in 2007 after Fiennes split from his common-law wife, Francesca Ennis. But according to reports in the British press, their relationship was constantly overshadowed by scandals associated with Rafe’s love affairs.

Four years ago, the Daily Mail wrote that Fiennes had an affair with Romanian singer Cornelia Crisan. Then there was a huge scandal on board a Quantas airline flight from Sydney to Bombay. On board the plane was Ralph Fiennes, who was then a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. He flew to India as part of a program to combat the spread of HIV infection. Fiennes was caught having sex with flight attendant Lisa Robertson in the plane's toilet. As a result, the actor lost his title as a goodwill ambassador, and Robertson was fired from Quantas.

After this incident, Rafe and Amanda did not appear in public together for a long time. Rumors about their separation have already spread in the press. But a year ago they were caught together in Belgrade on the set of Fiennes’s next film.

Since then, they have not had a single public appearance together. And so in Ivanovo the actor decided to take Amanda. Obviously, everything is fine with the couple's relationship.

Ups and downs

Spielberg's successful role changed everything. Ralph Fiennes, whose roles were previously very worthy, became a real star. In 1994, he took part in a historical film called “Television Quiz Show”. In 1995, James Cameron's film Strange Days was released, in which the actor played Lenny Nero. For this image, he received the Saturn Award for Best Film Actor. The next year turned out to be especially successful - Rafe played in the melodrama “The English Patient,” based on the novel of the same name. The work turned out to be so impressive that the actor received three awards for it: a Golden Globe, an Oscar and an award from BAFTA. In the same year, he also managed to star in a BBC mini-series about the First World War. 1997 pleased viewers with the film “Oscar and Lucinda,” where the actor received the main role. But there were also failures. In 1998, Ralph Fiennes, whose filmography included extremely successful films, starred in an action comedy film called The Avengers. This work turned out to be a failure - the acting duet with Uma Thurman was considered one of the worst, for which the film was nominated for the Golden Raspberry.

Ten years on screen

Ralph Fiennes, whose filmography began in the early nineties, managed to star in many different films over the decade. After the failure with The Avengers, he quickly rehabilitated his image as a talented actor by starring in the film adaptation of Pushkin’s novel Eugene Onegin. His sister Martha worked as a director on the set. In addition, in the same year, Fiennes took part in voice acting for the first time, working on the animated film “The Prince of Egypt.” In 1999, A Taste of Sunshine was released, where the actor, who began his career playing a Nazi, played a Hungarian Jew during the Holocaust. In the same year, the film “The End of the Affair” was released, and in 2000, Fiennes pleased fans with his appearance in the television films “The Miracle Worker” and “How Proust Can Change Your Life.”

New millennium

Ralph Fiennes did not even think of stopping at one dozen years of work. Therefore, 2002 pleased the audience with four films with their favorite actor. In “Spider,” based on the novel by Patrick McGrath, Rafe played a mentally unstable man, and in “Red Dragon” he had to completely transform into a homicidal maniac. In “Mistress Maid” and “The Good Thief,” the actor’s characters were much calmer and more familiar. In 2004, he worked on the set of the film “Hollywood and the Holocaust,” and 2005 was again busy - six films were released at once. At the beginning of the year, “Charmscrubbers” and “Chromophobia” appeared on screens, and then “The Constant Gardener” attracted the attention of film critics. For his role as Justin Quayle, Fiennes received a BAFTA Award, and the film itself was nominated for an Oscar several times by the Academy. For Wallace and Gromit, Rafe again tried his hand at voice acting. After the premiere of The White Countess, a new part of the worldwide popular franchise about a boy wizard was released.

Magic on set

In the film “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” the actor played the sinister wizard Voldemort. For this image, Ralph Fiennes, whose filmography had not previously included such films, received an award from the MTV Movie Awards in the category “Best Movie Villain.” For filming, complex multi-layer makeup was used, but even in such conditions the actor managed to show his artistry. It is not surprising that all subsequent parts of the franchise enjoyed continued success. In 2007, the fifth, entitled “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” was released, and three years later, the final of the two films, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” I and II, appeared on the screens. Together with the actor, such stars as Helena Bonham-Carter and Alan Rickman took part in the films, and the franchise gave young Radcliffe, Grint and Watson a path into the world of cinema.

Ralph Fiennes now

In 2020, the comedy detective “Holmes and Watson” was released in Russia, as the name implies - based on the works of Arthur Conan Doyle. The film, directed by Ethan Cohen, stars Kelly MacDonald, Will Ferrell, and Pam Ferris. Fiennes got the role of the main antagonist - the treacherous Professor Moriarty.

Ralph Fiennes as Professor Moriarty (still from the film Holmes and Watson)

The actor is currently working with Rebecca Hall on the drama Forgiven. In the film, colleagues played spouses going to the seaside. However, the festive mood is ruined by an accident - their car hits a child and kills them.

Rafe has another major role in the project of the author of “12 Monkeys” Terry Gilliam. The new film received the same name as the novel, taken as a basis - “Mr. Vertigo”. The Briton will play the mysterious figure of Master Yehudi, who teaches people levitation.

Ralph Fiennes (still from the movie “Kingsman 3: The Great Game”)

At the beginning of 2020, fans of Matthew Vaughn's spy franchise will receive the 3rd part. In Kingsman 3: The Great Game, Fiennes will appear as the hero's mentor, Harris Dickinson, and the film itself will become a prequel and tell about the origins of the secret organization.

Roles of recent years

Ralph Fiennes, whose photographs appear on posters every now and then, does not lose popularity. In 2010, he starred in the theatrical film Coriolanus, where he also tried himself as a director and producer, and he was accompanied on the set by Tom Hiddleston, the star of the Thor franchise. 2012 pleased viewers not only with “Wrath of the Titans” and “Great Expectations”, but also with a new part of the Bond movie with the participation of Fiennes. In addition, in the film “The Invisible Woman” the actor played Charles Dickens himself. In 2014, the film “The Grand Budapest Hotel” was released, which immediately turned out to be extremely successful. The films “Turks and Caicos” and “Salty Battlefield” premiered on TV. The film “Two Women” is planned for release this year, “Bond 24” is scheduled for 2015, and a year later fans should expect “The Flying Horse,” in which Ralph Fiennes also stars.

Ralph Fiennes: 'I feel like a loner quite often'

Julie Kavanagh's book “Rudolf Nureyev. Life” you read about twenty years ago, and the film “White Raven” inspired by it appeared only now. Why did you wait so long? When Julie sent me the first six chapters of her book to read, I didn’t really understand why she did it. Yes, I had great pleasure, but I couldn’t find any practical application for this plot at that time: I’m not a ballet connoisseur, nothing in me inclines me to create the image of Nureyev myself, and at that time I didn’t even think about directing . Figuratively speaking, I put my impressions into a box and put it on a shelf in my head. Producer Gabi Tana, with whom we filmed Coriolanus and The Invisible Woman, suggested that I take up this topic, and I gladly responded.

How did you formulate the task for the leading actor, dancer Oleg Ivenko? When I was selecting an actor for this role, I immediately began looking for my Nureyev among the ballet dancers. If I gave the role to a dramatic artist, I would have to use numerous doubles for different parts of the body. In addition, the name of Oleg Ivenko was unknown to a wide circle, which relieved us all of the pressure associated with expectations. I was looking for an actor who could convey Rudy's unique combination of passionate and ardent and at the same time humble nature, obsession with dance and stage, creative impatience, arrogance and a sense of being chosen.

What facets of Nureyev’s personality did you consider especially important to highlight? I constantly encounter the fact that when talking about Rudy, people always slide into discussions of his harsh verbal attacks, selfishness, various character flaws, shameless demonstration of his homosexuality, everything that in the minds of most people is “out of line.” And they forget that Nureyev was driven from early childhood by an indomitable, unbridled passion for the stage. Is it possible to find even a drop of selfishness in Rudy's attitude towards his profession? In this sense, I was greatly impressed by Simon Robinson's memoirs, A Year with Nureyev. These are the memories of a young man who worked for a year for a completely unbearable man, who changed his decisions every minute, was helpless in everyday matters and whom it was impossible to please. And at some point, the already discouraged, exhausted young man looks at Nureyev from a different angle: he understands that absolutely everything in his life is subordinated to the stage. Only in dance and what is connected with it is the meaning of life for him, and everything else is just tiresome noise. I was really moved by this book because it is a story of acceptance and forgiveness.

Why did you decide to play the role of Alexander Ivanovich Pushkin, Nureyev’s teacher? Initially, I did not intend to act in this film myself. I can say that I was prompted to take this step by the financial difficulties that we encountered during the production of the film: we collected funds for it for a long time and with difficulty. There is a wonderful black and white documentary about Pushkin on YouTube, and I have watched it countless times. I was worried - and not only because I had to play in Russian, albeit not for the first time in my life, which is very difficult if it is not your native language. My character, about whom I asked many of his contemporaries and former students, including Mikhail Baryshnikov, is an extremely delicate, sensitive, warm-hearted person and completely devoted to the art of ballet. He is a man with self-respect, who lives in his own world, and his teaching method was to gently guide the student and bring him to the realization of the mistake, and then correct it together. A very wise approach, I must say.

You called your film “White Raven”. Do you personally know this feeling? Did you feel like an outsider? Yes, I know this feeling. I remembered one indicative case: it was on the train, I was going to school, and I was about 13 or 14 years old. It seemed to my fellow travelers that I was a typical black sheep, and they began to make fun of me in a friendly and caustic manner, hinting at my lack of masculinity, calling me gay and a klutz. I played sports, I liked girls, and these attacks were very humiliating. In general, I must say that I feel like a loner quite often. I was never attracted to noisy companies, all these trips to bars and football matches. I am one of those who would prefer to settle down with a book on the sofa.

At a friendly screening at the Angleterre Cinema, your film is shown in the director's cut, as well as during the Russian premiere and at the press screening of the film. However, the version with banknotes was released. Why did this happen and how did you react to it? Of course I'm very upset and disappointed. At first, there were no signs of problems, and the film's distributors, Disney, were optimistic. Then they asked me to cut out the sex scene with Teia Kremke and the shots of the completely naked male body. At the same time, I was assured that this should be done not for censorship reasons, but for commercial reasons, so that the film could be shown to teenagers. At the same time, they promised me that cinemas would be given the opportunity to choose from two versions - the director's version and the one with cuts. As it turned out, Russian cinemas voted for the edited version, and ordinary viewers could not watch my version. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to influence the situation, although I tried to do so more than once. I hope that someday at least some cinemas in Russia will consider it possible and correct to show my version of the film.

Personal life of the actor

In 1993, the Briton married an actress named Alex Kingston. The relationship between them began while they were in college. But the actor could not play the role of an exemplary family man for long - he soon began a relationship with Francesca Annis, an actress who is seventeen years older than Fiennes. The wife could not put up with this situation for long, and the marriage ended in divorce after four years of marriage, in 1997. After that, Ralph Fiennes and his women did not attract the attention of the public - the actor’s new relationships remained in the shadows, and the actor never intended to marry a second time. In 1995, Empire magazine named him one of the 100 sexiest men in cinema, and in 1997 he was recognized as one of the 100 best movie stars of all time. Perhaps his heart is free, the loving fans wonder, but Fiennes himself does not give any information on this matter. The actor’s relatives are busy in the world of cinema, so Rafe now and then runs into brothers or sisters on the set. The younger brother Joseph played Shakespeare himself in the melodrama Shakespeare in Love. Sister Martha became a film director, and even directed her older brother in one of her films. Sophie works as a producer, and Magnus became a composer. Only Jacob decided to stay away from creative professions and chose to become a forester. The actor is closest to Martha. It is she who shares his ideas about cinema. However, unlike Rafe, her sister manages to combine her life in art with family life - Martha has a beloved husband and children. In his free time from filming, the actor participates in various UNICEF programs, of which he is a goodwill ambassador.

Ralph Fiennes

Ralph Fiennes
Ralph Nathaniel Fiennes

British actor.

Born December 22, 1962 in Suffolk, UK.

He was the first of six children in the family of photographer Mark Fiennes and writer Jennifer Lush. The parents' creative natures forced them to frequently change their place of residence, and also encouraged their children to engage in art. As a result, Rafe and his brother Joseph became actors, sisters Martha and Sophie became producers and directors, and another brother, Magnus, became a musician.

Initially, Rafe became interested in painting and even studied at the College of Art and Design in Chelsea, but then he still went to study acting in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

After graduating from the academy in 1987, the certified actor joined the troupe of the Royal National Theater, and a year later became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. There Rafe was lucky enough to play a lot of classic roles from Romeo to Edmund in King Lear. The actor first became known to the general public after starring in the British television film Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia.

The actor turned into a global star in 1993 after the release of Steven Spielberg's film Schindler's List. Rafe's portrayal of the Nazi Amon Goeth shocked audiences with its dramatic depth and earned the newly minted star an Oscar nomination and a British Academy Award. After Schindler's List, newspapers and magazines began to write about the actor, only then did many learn that his name was pronounced Ralph Fiennes (and not Ralph Fiennes, as can be read according to the rules).

In 1996, The English Patient again brought Rife further Oscar and Golden Globe nominations.

In 1995, Empire magazine named Ralph Fiennes one of the "100 Sexiest Stars in Cinema History" and in 1997 one of the "100 Best Movie Stars of All Time."

But his next films were subject to numerous attacks. But 1999 brought Rafe back into the favor of critics and the public. This happened thanks to the film adaptation of Onegin (directed by the actor’s sister, Martha Fiennes), another film adaptation of The End of a Love Affair, and the saga about the life of the dynasty of Hungarian Jews, A Taste of Sunshine.

Rafe gave Martha the idea to film Eugene Onegin; this was when she was still in college and she had to live for years and years for the idea to come true. Everything connected with Russian culture awes Rafe, just as his mother once did. He came to Russia three times. First with a performance based on Chekhov’s play “Ivanov”, then at the “Faces of Love” festival with the film “The English Patient”. And finally, to the anniversary celebrations of Pushkin - he and Marta brought their brainchild, their film “Onegin”, terribly worried about how it would be held in Pushkin’s country. Fiennes is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. prizes and awards BAFTA Award (1993): Best Supporting Actor (“Schindler’s List”)
