Biography[edit | edit code]

Early years[edit | edit code]

Born on April 15, 1979 in Pontypool, Wales, UK[3]. Luke is the only child in the family. His father David is a builder and his mother Yvonne is a cleaner. Both are members of the international religious organization Jehovah's Witnesses[2][4]. Luke spent his childhood in the small town of Aberbargoyd[5]. After leaving school at 16 and leaving the Jehovah's Witnesses, Evans decided to study vocals and acting. To pay for his lessons, he worked as a salesman in a shoe store and helped his father at a construction site[6].

At the age of 17, he moved to the capital of Wales, Cardiff[6], where he studied vocals under the direction of Louise Ryan[7]. In 1997, Evans received a scholarship to study drama at London Central Studios, from which he successfully graduated in 2000.[8] From 2000 to 2008, he took an active part in theatrical productions such as Taboo, Piaf, Rent, Small Changes, Miss Saigon[9][10][11].

In 2009, Luke received a minor role in the film “Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll”[12]. His film career quickly took off, he starred in “Clash of the Titans” by Louis Leterrier and “Robin Hood” by Ridley Scott. Even greater success was brought to him by the film “Irresistible Tamara” (Evans embodied the key character), an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel “Far from the Madding Crowd,” which was well received by the audience. The popularity of the film had a positive effect on Luke’s demand; he received many offers from famous directors[6]. In 2011, with his participation, Eliot Lester’s action film “No Compromise”, Tarsem Singh’s blockbuster “War of the Gods: Immortals”, the adventure drama “The Musketeers”, in which the actor played Aramis, and the drama “Excitement” were released. In 2012, he starred in the detective thriller “The Raven”[13]. Then he played the role of the main antagonist in the film “Fast and Furious 6”[14]. He became most famous for his role as the archer Bard in the 2nd and 3rd parts of Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy[15]. In 2014, Luke played the role of Vlad Dracula in the film Dracula[16][17].

Also in 2020, the film “Furious 7” was released, and filming took place in the films “A Message from King”[19], “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Girl on the Train”[20]. In the spring of 2020, the musical film “Beauty and the Beast” was released - an adaptation of the fairy tale of the same name, in which Luke played the role of Gaston[21]. Luke also starred in the film “Professor Marston and Wonder Woman”, in which he played the creator of the Wonder Woman comics, William Marston.[22]

From a 2002 interview with The Advocate: “At the time I got into Taboo, I was aware that although my role assumed a straight orientation, everyone knew me as gay and, living in London, I never tried to hide it.” [25]. In a 2014 interview with WWD, Luke said: “It’s important for a lot of people to see me and think - here’s a guy who’s doing his thing, enjoying it, being successful, and at the same time he’s living his life. I am who I am."[26]

In 2020, he appeared before the audience as Prince Gaston in the fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast.” The role of Belle went to Emma Watson, and the Beast was played by Dan Stevens.

That same year, Luke returned to the role of Owen Shaw in the eighth installment of The Fast and the Furious, but only appeared in an episode.

The actor got the main role in the drama “Professor Marston and His Wonder Women,” where he played the psychologist William Marston, famous for the invention of the lie detector and the theory of feminism. Comic book creator Max Gaines suggested that William, who highly valued the role of comics in the cultural space, come up with a female superhero.

In October, news broke that Luke Evans and Helen Mirren had joined the cast of Luc Besson's upcoming film Anna. Details of the picture are not disclosed. But it is known that the plot of the film is built around the girl Anna, who finds herself at the center of a criminal intrigue. In addition to Evans and Mirren, the action film stars Sasha Luss and Cillian Murphy.

In April 2020, the premiere of the thriller “10 to 10” directed by Susie Ewing took place. Luke played the role of a man named Robert Lewis, who does not believe that his beloved wife died as a result of medical error. He kidnaps the nurse who was on duty that day. The woman lives under a different name and keeps a secret.

The interest of viewers was aroused by the series "The Alienist", where Evans became a newspaper illustrator investigating a series of brutal murders in New York with a psychiatrist (alienist) and the first woman working in the police. Along with Luke, the main roles were played by Daniel Brühl and Dakota Fanning.

In addition, the artist is involved in the leading role in the drama “As if in a Dream.” This is the story of a widow, Catherine, who is killed by her husband's suicide. Suddenly a woman learns about the secret life of her deceased husband. To understand what happened, Catherine goes to a secret sex club, popular among high society men, and begins her own investigation.

Luke Evans will also appear in a documentary about the outstanding actor Ian McKellen.

Today, the horror film “Ma” is in production, where the artist is again involved in the role of the central character.
