Childhood and youth
Alexey Barabash was born under the zodiac sign Gemini on June 12, 1977 in St. Petersburg. He was his parents' only child.
The boy's father was involved in jazz, his mother was a housewife. The relationship between the spouses was not easy: the couple sometimes diverged, then converged, but in the end the parents chose to live together. Today, Alexey often visits his hometown - primarily because of the desire to be close to his family.
In his family, only his grandmother, Galina Frantsevna Rusetskaya, a Ukrainian by nationality, had anything to do with acting. The woman served at the Leningrad Comedy Theater when it was directed by Nikolai Akimov. Despite the fact that the future artist did not personally know the relative, this still influenced his further choice of life path.
The young man attended music school, but quickly lost interest in playing the drums and abandoned his studies. Like his peers, Barabash was fond of sports - he played football and hockey, was professionally involved in martial arts and participated in competitions. One of Lesha’s hobbies during his teenage years was ship modeling.
During his studies, the guy changed several schools. This was due to family moves. The need to adapt to new conditions influenced Alexei's character. He quickly learned to find a common language with strangers. Later this came in handy in my creativity.

Alexey Barabash in his youth
Drama clubs and theatrical performances were alien to Alexei. But the mother of the future actor was sure that with such appearance and genes, her son would turn out to be a bright artist. When the guy was 16 years old, she enrolled him in theater courses taught by the eminent teacher Zinovy Korogodsky.
The influence of Zinovy Yakovlevich on Barabash turned out to be so strong that after graduating from school as an external student, the guy applied to the St. Petersburg Humanitarian University of Trade Unions. The entrance exams were easy for him: Barabash wrote poetry himself and easily memorized large amounts of text. The applicant decided not to try to impress the commission with originality, but simply read the famous fable about the crow and the cheese. Alexey was enrolled in the workshop of the same Korogodsky.
The first course was not easy, the guy was not ready for theatrical life. The future performer began to skip classes, periodically facing the threat of expulsion. But his leader turned out to be loyal and patiently waited for adaptation.
In the 2nd year, from a lagging student who often became the object of Korogodsky’s criticism, Alexey turned into the master’s favorite. The artist himself recalls in an interview that the triggering moment for him was the showing of one excerpt. Then on stage the guy felt like an actor. Every day the young man's talents became more and more obvious. With the help of Zinovy Yakovlevich, the performer found his own path in the profession.
Personal life
Alexey was married 4 times, from 3 marriages he has children growing up. His first wife was actress Olga Belinskaya. The colleagues met in their youth, when they were still university students, and immediately got married. Soon their son Arseny was born, and the guy had to combine study, work and raising a child.
A terrible accident put an end to family life, after which Barabash nursed his wife for a long time. But in the end, Olga decided to leave the actor. Alexey continues to maintain a relationship with his son and, to the best of his ability, helps him in life.
Arseny chose the path of a musician. Now he plays classical guitar, writes music, and gives concerts. The father himself envied his son’s persistence in achieving his goal. In an interview, Barabash admitted that the guy studies a lot and, if given the opportunity, sits at the guitar for several hours.
The artist’s second wife was actress Natalya Burmistrova. This marriage also did not last long. Soon, an unknown girl named Yulia appeared in the performer’s personal life, with whom a son, Matvey, was born. But these relationships did not stand the test of life and time.
A dwarf New Year was born, a hunchbacked, wrinkled freak, a dreary jester and a skeptic, a sage and an epileptic.

Alexey Barabash and his wife Anna Zdor
On the set of the series “The Man in Me,” Alexey met actress Anna Zdor. At that time, both were not free, and at first Anna did not even react to the actor’s advances. Later, a spark flashed between them, and the partners began to think about living together. The girl filed for divorce, and Barabash left his wife and young son.
Anna and Alexey got married, and soon their daughter Varvara was born. In 2014, Zdor filed for divorce due to her husband’s infidelity. She told reporters that she found his love correspondence with his ex-wife Yulia Barabash, whom he met in St. Petersburg. The artist himself denied everything and categorically disagreed with the motives for the divorce. Nevertheless, the court granted Anna’s request and ordered the man to pay alimony.
At one time, Alexey tried to improve relations with the mother of his 2nd son Matvey, but soon a new muse appeared in his life. According to some media reports, it was actress Anna Vorkueva. The girl accompanied Barabash several times at social events, although her photo cannot be found on the artist’s personal Instagram account.

Alexey Barabash and Evgenia Brik
Later, the media started talking about the actor’s romance with his colleague Alexandra Bogdanova. Sasha is 15 years younger than her chosen one and has already played in such projects as “Ghosts of Zamoskvorechye”, “Smersh”, “Rostov”.
For his 40th birthday, the actor reconsidered his views on his lifestyle. Alexey quit smoking and drinking alcohol. In terms of nutrition, he switched to a vegetarian diet and took up sports. Today the artist runs 5-6 km a day. Barabash loves walking; in the summer, the man tries to get around by bicycle. Thanks to an active lifestyle, the performer managed to achieve athletic shape in a short time.
Alexey claims that he feels 100% like an actor. He is not lying when he says that he wants to please the public. And the man succeeds. According to critics, the artist looks natural in any historical environment, and his external characteristics (height - 180 cm, weight - 83 kg) are suitable for many roles.
Fans of the screen star have a question: is Alexey a relative of director Roman Barabash? In fact, there are no family ties between the two creative personalities; they are just namesakes.
Director
Roman's first directorial works came during his student years. In 2002, he made two short films: “Holy” and “The Drug.” And three years later, the film “Gnome” with the participation of Jane Capriss was released in the same format, which received the Audience Award at the “Open Night” festival. Then Roman released the children's series Kuvyr.com - short comedic stories about schoolchildren aged 5 to 12 years.
“My mother is the Snow Maiden”
Russian audiences met the director in 2007 thanks to the joint project “My Mother is the Snow Maiden” with Ukraine. This is one of Roman's early full-length works, made in the genre of melodrama. The author, together with screenwriter Tatyana Kaluzhina, filmed the story by Natalya Antonova. It tells about what stories happen to people from completely different lives and how fate can connect them with each other a week before the New Year.
It was not by chance that Roman Barabash turned to the fabulous New Year’s theme: “The story seems to be simple, but when producer Yuri Minzyanov offered this script to me, a director who is attracted specifically by melodrama and comedy, I was captivated. And although I could not immediately formulate what attracted me to this story, we immediately had the idea to add a little magic and comedy to the film, making its characters even more interesting. At the same time, we tried to make the film very touching and truthful, without missing out on human destinies in the New Year’s tinsel.”
In one of his interviews, Roman spoke about the record-breaking short casting for the film: “We selected all the actors, which is more than twenty people, in a week. And this despite the fact that the film stars very good actors: Maria Poroshina, Dmitry Orlov, Tatyana Abramova, Ilya Drevnov, Natalya Lesnikovskaya, Mikhail Bogdasarov and many others. It seems to me that the result is a rather interesting group of actors, in which none of the actors “drags the blanket over themselves,” and at the same time they complement each other.
Casting children for the main role was very difficult, but we were incredibly lucky. Within a week we managed to find a little boy in Moscow to play the role of the main character Stepashka, this is Ruslan Shchedrin. In my opinion, such a child is a success for every director, every film. So don’t believe in miracles after this...”
The next successful project for the director was the comedy “Come in - don’t be afraid, come out - don’t cry” with Andrei Sokolov and Lyanka Gryu in the lead roles. And the melodrama “A Few Ghostly Days” brought Roman his first serious international award - the “Platinum Remi” Prize at the Independent Film Festival in Houston. The film about the life of a card sharper stars the famous Russian actor Igor Lifanov.
In 2011, the Russia-1 channel premiered the director’s new melodrama, “Love at Two Poles.” This was followed by the comedies “Housekeeper” and “Chief of Police.”
One of Roman’s longest-term projects was the 40-episode ironic detective story “Tail,” which tells the story of an incredible woman, Anna Khvostova, a kind of “Miss Marple.” The plot of the series develops around “Columbo in a skirt” - Anna Ivanovna Khvostova. It appears when the investigation reaches a dead end and cannot find the necessary information to solve the crime.
The audience also fell in love with the melodramas created by Barabash in recent years: “Time of Daughters”, “The Golden Bride”, “Bad Neighbor”. In total, the talented director and screenwriter has about two dozen interesting projects.
Theater
In 1997, the guy graduated from the university and immediately received several invitations to famous theaters. The graduate preferred the Theater for Young Spectators, which was directed by Anatoly Arkadyevich Praudin. Working with the main director turned out to be fruitful: in addition to numerous roles of animals, which were frequent characters in his track record, Alexey played Ivan the Fool in the production of The Little Humpbacked Horse, as well as Jean in the play Bonjour, Monsieur Perrault.
When Proudin left the Youth Theater, the entire theater troupe decided to follow him. Anatoly Arkadyevich created an experimental stage on the basis of the Baltic House theater, where Barabash began playing in 1998.
The debut at the new location was the unusual play “Crocodile” based on the fairy tale by Korney Chukovsky. On the wave of success, the performers went on tour across Russia, where they performed on the best theater stages.
The artist also participated in Proudin's subsequent projects. In the play “Sisyphus and the Stone” he played the legendary Theseus, and in the production “Lesson One. Sunday" appeared in the guise of one of the apostles. Barabash worked on the experimental stage for 2 years, after which he lost interest in the theater. The artist bet on cinema and was not mistaken.
Movies
The first film roles turned out to be quite passable for Alexey. In 2000, he took part in the filming of the film “Russian Revolt”, where he played a nameless clerk. In his youth, the actor appeared in a number of episodic roles. Thus, in Yevgeny Tatarsky’s detective story “Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin” he appeared as a bandit. Later, the performer said in an interview that, voicing the hero from the first take, he received praise from the director. Stage director Fr.
The first notable role was the character of Alexander I from the series “Poor, Poor Pavel.” The serial film was a success, and directors began to notice the talented artist.
Barabash, as a matter of principle, does not act in sitcoms, refusing such projects almost every day. However, he has his weaknesses: the actor is delighted with costume films, where the emphasis is on depicting the era and the appearance of the characters. Therefore, when Evgeny Ivanov invited a man to his historical film “Gentlemen of the Jury,” he could not resist.
During the same period of Alexei’s creative biography, a series of historical characters followed. This is Prince Mikhail Dolgoruky in the film “The Emperor’s Love”, cornet Obolensky in the comedy “The True Story of Lieutenant Rzhevsky”, Count Stanislav Poniatovsky in the adventure film “With a Pen and a Sword”.

Alexey Barabash and Valeria Gai-Germanika
Many viewers remember Barabash for his role as Kostya, an office worker from the romantic film “Peter FM”. Interestingly, Alexei himself did not like this image. For him, the role of a manager turned out to be too boring.
The artist played his first significant role in 2006, appearing in the action adventure film about the times of the New Economic Policy, “The Life and Death of Lenka Panteleev.” Barabash brilliantly coped with the image of a Cheka employee who also turned out to be a dashing robber, a kind of “Soviet Robin Hood.”
Later, Alexey starred in a number of melodramas: “Palm Sunday”, “This woman is coming to me”, “There would be no happiness” and others. His partners were such screen stars as Natalia Antonova and Glafira Tarkhanova. In 2010, Barabash appeared in the continuation of the famous military drama “We are from the Future,” where his colleagues in the frame were Igor Petrenko, Vladimir Yaglych, Dmitry Stupka, Ekaterina Klimova.
The artist was also lucky to work with Viktor Merezhko (the man starred in his film “Wanted”) and Valeria Gai Germanika in the TV series “A Short Course in a Happy Life.”
Alexey Barabash’s image of Nikiforov from Fyodor Bondarchuk’s film “Stalingrad” turned out to be bright and memorable. When the eminent director invited the actor to film, he immediately agreed.

Alexey Barabash and Maria Andreeva
There were some difficulties: according to the script, his character is an opera singer, who, by the will of fate, ended up at the front. If not for the war, his life would have turned out differently: success awaited the young man on stage. For the sake of the role, Barabash lost 15 kg in order to feel and convey the whole gamut of feelings and emotions that a man starved in war experiences.
One of the notable works in the artist’s filmography is the series “These Eyes Opposite,” dedicated to the biography of the famous Soviet pop singer.
Here Barabash played the main character - singer Valery Obodzinsky. Alexey performed many of the songs included in the film’s soundtrack personally. The man was remembered by television viewers for his episodic but colorful roles in the projects “Teach Me to Live”, “Icebreaker”, “The Third Life of Daria Kirillovna”. According to the actor, what is important to him is not so much the popularity of the film, but rather the new things that he was able to discover while working on the image.
In 2020, Alexey played the role of a KGB officer in the series “Mysterious Passion,” produced by Denis Evstigneev.
In 2018, the performer took part in the filming of 2 films. In the melodrama “Nanny” he played Nikolai, and in the comedy “What Men Talk About. Continuation" appeared in the image of a businessman, a friend of the main character Sasha (Alexander Demidov).
Interview
About the profession
“It seems to me that every director, when he starts working on a film script, still writes it anew, for himself. To film something that has already been written word for word is more like an illustration than a new painting. The main thing is to capture the essence of what was written, what the author of the work wanted to tell. This is what distinguishes good literary material from bad, because one and the same thing can be read in different ways.”
“The director’s wishes are a terrible thing. Sometimes you see a role, but you don’t see an actor who could play it, or you see a talented actor, but there is no role for him in your film.”
“In general, it is believed that working with non-professional actors, children, animals is incredibly difficult, because filming requires more time, you don’t know how a small child will behave in the frame, where a trained dog will eventually run, etc...., but I have this job aroused great interest."
About the director's dream
“Every director dreams in his heart that his films will be watched by audiences. At least more than once. And when some directors say that they make films exclusively “for themselves,” they are lying, because they also want to leave their mark on eternity. There are, of course, exceptions, there are those who work only for internal self-realization, but very rarely does anyone watch these films; in most cases, this is just internal narcissism. I don’t know whether this is good or bad, to be honest.”

Alexey Barabash now
In April 2020, good news appeared for fans of the work of Alexey Barabash. For the anniversary of the 75th anniversary of the Victory, the mini-series “Julbars” was presented, in which the artist played the main role. The film is based on real events and is dedicated to the feat of a detachment of border guards and their service dogs, who fought a mortal battle against the fascist invaders in 1941.
The actor reincarnated on screen as party worker Polyakov, the father of the daughter of the main character Kira (Maria Andreeva). Polyakov arrives on the eve of the start of the war at the unit where his chosen one works as a doctor.
To create the picture, 20 dogs were brought in, with whom the best dog handlers in Russia worked. The main role of Julbars was played by a pet brought to the set in Crimea from St. Petersburg. The director of the project was Ivan Shurkhovetsky, who had previously directed such films as “The Legend of Kolovrat”, “Russian Prisoner”, “Fog”.
Filmography: films starring Alexey Barabash
The actor’s filmography is admirable, because he managed to star in a sufficient number of films, and in the films he played a variety of roles that were so different in character that one could only be surprised at the guy’s persistence. He started, essentially, small. At first he played episodic roles in the series “Streets of Broken Lanterns”, as well as “Deadly Force”. But after a while he began to get significant roles in films such as “The Emperor’s Love,” “Realtor” and some others. Of course, his most successful role was the role in the film “Stalingrad,” which received good success and allowed the actor to advance even more. I would also like to note that throughout his career, Alexey very often played negative characters, which was interesting for him. He has repeatedly said that playing villains is much more interesting, although he himself still loved positive roles more.
Also in his list of films, there were a variety of genres, from action films to the craziest comedies, where you had to play really funny characters. Any role was important for him, he took on acting work with pleasure, because the world of cinema is diverse, you just need to find your place there and follow your path. Alexey has proven that he is a universal actor, so he can cope with any role. Today, the actor continues to actively star in Russian TV series of various meanings and genres. All this suggests that the guy is still in demand, he can already afford to choose what he wants, and not just what is offered.
He has a sufficient number of good works to his credit that allow the actor to show his best side. As for his personal life, we will talk about this in more detail; we will only say here that the actor already has several marriages that have not become permanent for him, except for the last one.
