Childhood and youth

Philip Avdeev was born on November 10, 1991 in Moscow. He received his secondary general education at school No. 1297. According to Avdeev, for some time as a child he dreamed of becoming an architect, but the boy did not succeed in drawing.

Philip's grandmother contributed to the development of his acting talent, teaching him poetry and taking him to dances. His grandmother’s efforts bore fruit: at the age of 10, Philip became an actor in the notorious musical “Nord-Ost,” which was staged at the Theater Center on Dubrovka. He had no questions regarding his choice of profession - after graduating from school, Philip submitted documents to the Moscow Art Theater School. At first, Avdeev’s father was indignant and called studying at a theater university “child’s games,” but he quickly realized that everything was serious and changed his mind. Biography

He studied at the “Class Center” school[1]. In 2001 he made his debut on the theater stage in the musical “Nord-Ost”. On October 23, 2002, the day of the terrorist attack, he was at the Theater Center. At the moment the militants began to seize the building, he was preparing to take the stage in the second act of the musical. He was able to hide in the dressing room and, after several hours spent as hostages, escape through the window with other members of the troupe.[2][3] Since 2003 - actor at the Children's Musical Theater for Young Actors. At the same time he made his debut in cinema, his first work was the role of Artyom in the children's adventure film “The Secret of the Blue Valley”. He played in the film magazine "Yeralash". After graduating from school, he immediately entered the Shchepkinsky and Shchukinsky theater schools, the acting department of GITIS and the Moscow Art Theater School.[1] He preferred the Studio School (Kirill Serebrennikov’s workshop), which he graduated from in 2012. At the same time, as part of the Seventh Studio theater troupe, he came to work at the Gogol Center. In 2014, as part of the main competition program of the 25th Open Russian Film Festival “Kinotavr”, the premiere of Ivan Tverdovsky’s film “Correction Class” took place, in which Philip played the main role. The film received the prize “For Best Debut” and the Film Distributors Jury Prize,[4] and subsequently participated in several other domestic and foreign film festivals. In 2016, Philip Avdeev made his debut on the stage of the Gogol Center with his first theatrical directorial work, “Iolanta/opus,”[5] and in 2020 he staged the play “Sea of ​​Trees” there.[6] In the spring of 2020, as part of the main program of the 71st Cannes Film Festival, the world premiere of Kirill Serebrennikov’s film “Summer” with the participation of Philip took place, [7] in the summer of 2020, as part of the debut competition of the Kinotavr film festival, Alexander Gorchilin’s film “Acid” with Philip Avdeev was presented starring.[8] In February 2019, “Acid” participated in the “Panorama” program of the 69th Berlin Film Festival.[9] In June 2020, the premiere of Oksana Karas’ film “Above the Sky” took place at Kinotavr, in which the actor also played the main role. Theater

In 2009, Kirill Serebrennikov, together with the students of his course, founded the theater troupe “Seventh Studio”, which included Avdeev. The first performances took place at the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art and at the Moscow Art Theater. One of Avdeev’s first works on the stage of this theater - the role of Grisha Zhilin in Serebrennikov’s play “Thugs” based on the novel by Zakhar Prilepin, brought the actor the “Golden Leaf 2012” award in the “Best Actor” category. Among Philip’s other works in the theater is the role of Hamlet, desired by all actors (dir. David Bobet from France), topographer Petrov in the play “Kharms. Myr" (dir. Maxim Didenko) and the young nobleman and romantic Alexander Aduev in "An Ordinary History" based on the novel by Ivan Goncharov.

Philip also plays in Serebrennikov’s play “Who Lives Well in Rus'” based on the poem by Nikolai Nekrasov and two productions of the “Star” project (a series of plays about poets of the Silver Age), such as “Pasternak. My sister is life” and “Mandelshtam. Century the Wolfhound” with Chulpan Khamatova in the title role. For playing several roles at once in the last performance in 2020, Philip was awarded the Parabola Prize by the Foundation named after the poet Andrei Voznesensky.

Directing work in the theater

Avdeev tried his hand not only as an actor, but also as a director at the Gogol Center. Philip said that since his 4th year he asked Serebrennikov to stage something on stage, and now his dream finally came true. Among other things, Philip and the other actors of “Seventh Studio” recorded the soundtrack for the film. Soon after the release of the film, which received a lot of positive reviews, Avdeev appeared in supporting roles in Yulia Belaya’s tragicomedy “City Birds” and Alexander Kott’s melodrama “Insight” about a man who starts life from scratch after losing his sight. In June 2020, the long-awaited film by Kirill Serebrennikov “Summer” was released on the big screen, which was based on the history of the formation of the Kino group and the work of Viktor Tsoi (Teo Yu), his friendship with Mike Naumenko (Roma Zver) and Mike’s wife Natalya (Irina Starshenbaum).
