Biography
Alexander Terekhov is a designer who is often called a unique phenomenon in Russian fashion. The clothes created according to Terekhov’s sketches do not at all give the impression of pretentiousness and pretentiousness. However, even seemingly simple things from the designer’s collections look incredibly stylish and, as they say, “expensive.” It is this kind of non-flashy luxury, created by Alexander Terekhov, that Svetlana Bondarchuk, Renata Litvinova, Polina Gagarina, Sergei Shnurov and other film and pop stars prefer.
Alexander Terekhov designer: development, prosperity, trends
Models from the Terekhov brand are not a problem to buy today. With the support of the Rusmoda company, the brand is sold both in its own boutiques and in world-famous showrooms.
Among the trends and models that the designer offers to clients all over the world, both permanent series and periodic experiments deserve recognition. Terekhov tries to set prices for all his masterpieces within a reasonable range, rightly believing that fashionable and beautiful clothes should not cost as much as a personal plane.
Depending on the year, fans received and continue to receive the opportunity to purchase the best items from the designer’s collections:
- bags produced in collaboration with the brand Сoccinelle (Italy);
- limited edition printed T-shirts;
- jeans, coats, skirts, blouses and dresses – each season has its own masterpieces.
The collections of Alexander Terekhov are sometimes assessed as “repetitions of the past,” but this can be said about the ideas of any designer.
All great maestros draw inspiration from the fashion of past years, choosing the best and adapting styles to modern trends. So it is not the basis of the collection that should be evaluated, but its actual result. And in this matter, Alexander Terekhov has no equal: his talent and individuality are noticeable in every model, which is appreciated by fashionistas all over the world. Did you like the article

I agree with the statement that Alexander Terekhov is a designer with great prospects and a huge number of fans. His images are so tender and romantic that even Ksyusha Sobchak in his dress seemed like an unearthly beauty to me.Answer
Childhood and youth
The future couturier was born on June 8, 1980 in a town called Vyazniki, in the Vladimir region. From early childhood, the boy was interested in clothes and even sewed clothes for dolls. Later, Alexander began to cut dresses for his mother and sisters.
Designer Alexander Terekhov
Alexander Terekhov’s father, a military man, was not delighted when he learned about his son’s hobbies. However, the boy’s mother, who usually did not argue with the head of the family, this time showed firmness and insisted on her own: Alexander was sent to an art school. A few years later, the time came to think about his future profession, and the choice of Alexander Terekhov turned out to be predictable: the young man wanted to be associated with the world of fashion.
The young man approached admission in detail. Together with his mother, Alexander went to the capital to choose a suitable educational institution. This turned out to be the Institute of Design and Fashion. However, getting there turned out to be not at all so easy: the capital’s teachers felt that Alexander’s drawing was poor by Moscow standards.
Alexander Terekhov
The designer himself later admits that he actually discovered some gaps in his artistic skills. For example, at the art school that Alexander graduated from, the teachers did not pay attention to the technique of shading, filling, and some other nuances that are important to professionals. Therefore, already in Moscow, Alexander Terekhov took private lessons to catch up and prepare for admission to the coveted institute.
In 1997, the young man managed to take the first step towards his own dream: Alexander was enrolled in the ranks of students at the Institute of Design and Fashion, and in a free department. The young man’s choice fell on the “costume design” department.
Fashion designer Alexander Terekhov
It seemed that now Alexander Terekhov had a direct path to fame, but the first time of his life in the capital turned out to be not at all cloudless. To earn at least a little money, the young man was constantly looking for options for part-time work in his free time. Terekhov even had to help workers break down floors in old houses.
By his own admission, Alexander approached his studies very seriously, trying to comprehend all the nuances and subtleties of the profession. Terekhov spared no time in independently studying the necessary information that he did not receive from teachers. The future designer considered the most important subjects to be the history of costume and costume design. It is they, according to Alexander Terekhov, who largely form the “hand” of any couturier.
Interesting facts about the life and work of a successful couturier
Alexander Terekhov is a designer from a small provincial town in the Vladimir region. From early childhood, his attention was attracted by various fabrics, from which he made miniature dresses for dolls, and later for his mother. Indeed, few people develop such talents at the age of 5. Usually children at an early age are restless and mischievous, but the thin boy Alexander had completely different hobbies.
After graduating from school, Alexander Terekhov knew exactly where to go - to the Fashion Institute. After several years of study, the young student takes part in the “Russian Silhouette” competition, where he demonstrates the creative “Twilight” clothing collection to the jury. This was the first step to great fame, since here he won second place and went to France to improve his skills - to the Fashion House with Saint Laurent himself.
An internship abroad helped the young talent hone his skills and begin to build a career. The work didn’t take long: requests for unique costumes began pouring in from singer Alsou. Already in 2004, Alexander Terekhov officially registered the brand and began demonstrating amazing outfits every year at Fashion Weeks both in Russia and in New York.
The elegant collections instantly appealed to nobles. Famous Hollywood actresses and singers wore the evening dresses of the young fashion designer. Fame and world fame did not take long to arrive: Alexander Terekhov opens his own fashion boutique under his logo in Los Angeles. In 2010, the couturier joined the team under the leadership of Oksana Lavrentyeva. Since then, the designer began producing seasonal clothing for women and girls.
Fashion and design
In 1999, Alexander Terekhov, while still a student, independently created a clothing collection called “Twilight”. The designer’s first such large-scale work was successful, giving Alexander second place in the Russian competition “Russian Silhouette”. The prize allowed the aspiring couturier to go on an internship to Paris, to the fashion house of Yves Saint Laurent himself. From this moment, perhaps, the professional biography of designer Alexander Terekhov began.
Returning to Moscow, the young man began creating stage images for Russian stars. The artist's first famous client was singer Alsou. This was in 2002. The girl organized a competition for the vacant position of her own stylist, and Alexander became the winner. By Terekhov’s own admission, the experience of working with stage outfits turned out to be useful. However, the current Alexander does not like the images created at that time.
“Everything was too elegant, a lot of glitter, stripes and tiaras,” admits the designer.
A year later, Alexander Terekhov already held a personal exhibition of his own clothing models in one of the Moscow creative galleries. Until 2005, the fashion designer worked with girls from the Reflex group - Irina Nelson and Alena Torganova.
Alexander’s long-time dream came true in 2004 - the fashion designer created his own brand, calling the company “Terexov”. Initially, only women's clothing and accessories were produced under this brand. Three years later, Alexander Terekhov opened the brand’s first boutique in the capital, and two years later, clothes and accessories “from Terekhov” began to be sold in Milan, Italy.
Ksenia Sobchak, Renata Litvinova, Sati Spivakova in dresses by Alexander Terekhov
In 2010, the Terexov brand joined the group and received a new name - Alexander Terekhov. In the same year, another fashion designer boutique opened, this time in the Ukraine Hotel. By this time, the designer’s name was already well-known all over the world, and Alexander’s outfits featured Celine Dion, Renata Litvinova, Angelina Jolie, Ravshana Kurkova and other recognized beauties.
Since 2011, Alexander Terekhov has been collaborating with Italian fashion. The year 2013 in the designer’s career was marked by participation in a prestigious show called “Designers of Dreams”, which took place at Disneyland Paris. For this event, Alexander prepared a luxurious ball gown for Cinderella. The outfit was sky blue, and the “highlight” of the fashionable ensemble was a handbag made in the shape of a clock with ticking hands. A photo of this dress appeared in, perhaps, every fashion magazine.
In 2013, the short film “Girl with a Box” was released, directed by Renata Litvinova to the music of Zemfira. This film was created specifically for Alexander Terekhov. The picture turned out to be atmospheric: black and white shots, “historical” interiors seem to take viewers back several decades. The film stars Alexander Terekhov and Renata Litvinova themselves, as well as Sati Spivakova and Ingeborga Dapkunaite.
In 2014, the fashion designer tried his hand at a new activity: Terekhov presented a collection of clothes for children. In the same year, a line of T-shirts with childhood photographs of Russian stars appeared. Alexander Terekhov transferred the money collected from sales to a foundation called “Vykhod”, which helps children with autism.

ABOUT HIM Born in the Tambov region into a military family, Alexander has been thinking about fashion since his school days. Deciding to get involved in fashion design, he did not do it the first time, but he entered a university, where he studied clothing design and modeling. Not everything came easy for him. I had to create my first products at night in a rented apartment. And yet, Alexander took part in the Russian Silhouette competition for young designers, where he took second place. After that, he went for an internship in France with the outstanding fashion maestro Yves Saint Laurent. There, Alexander became closely acquainted with the world of famous couturiers, absorbing the atmosphere of the capital of fashion and style. In 2004, he registered his trademark and presented his collections at New York Fashion Week for several seasons in a row. It would seem that all this is like a fairy tale. But the main role, contrary to well-known expectations, was not played by the naive Cinderella, but by a simple Russian guy.
Let's not split hairs. Behind the usual appearance and dislike of publicity lies real talent and incredible charisma, no matter how pretentious it may sound. Terekhov has the skills to create clothes from idea to implementation. Thanks to the skill of cutting, dresses from Alexander can be worn by women from sizes 38 to 52. Alexander definitely has a sense of taste and a professional instinct for future trends. Unfortunately, many Russian designers are sometimes deprived of this. The originality and creativity of Alexander’s character is manifested in such seemingly small things and details as the designer’s musical and book preferences. For example, in his playlist there peacefully exist tracks of artists such as Sade, Britney Spears, Sergei Shnurov, etc., which are completely different in style and mood.
ABOUT PATRIOTISM For Sergei Shnurov, by the way, Terekhov created a special collection for a tour dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the musical activity of the Leningrad group. The special recent collection is filled with the patriotism of the famous fashion designer. It was created for a tour dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the musical activity of the Leningrad group. The idea of love for fatherland runs like a red line through the entire collection - here are the dresses of the Leningrad soloists, decorated with sequins in the colors of the Russian tricolor, and our dear alcoholic T-shirts with cats and the inscription in Russian: “It’s not me,” and so beloved by compatriots (and now and throughout the civilized world) trousers with stripes.
The idea of patriotism, by the way, can be traced practically in other outfits of Alexander. This is understandable - often moving from city to city, Alexander constantly observes the tastes and preferences of Russian women and girls. And his views, of course, are reflected in the collections created - a lot of glitter, scatterings of stones on dresses, rhinestones, silk flowing fabrics. But not “too much” and not on the brink, as other designers sometimes like to do. Everything is very subtle and tasteful, for a sophisticated audience not only in Russia, but also abroad. For an audience willing to pay for unique products. Currently, Alexander Terekhov brand clothing is represented in 78 countries around the world, and the brand is not going to stop there.
ABOUT INSPIRATION To a banal and boring question from journalists about where the fashion designer gets inspiration, Alexander evasively and laconically answers: “In the people who love me.” Of course, like all creative people, Alexander is characterized by frequent mood changes and, as a result, his muses are always different. One of Alexander’s first muses was Svetlana Bondarchuk. According to the designer, she was the first popular media person to wear his dress, and from that moment his career took off.
But, probably, one of the most famous muses of Alexander Terekhov was Polina Gagarina - a legendary snow-white dress with a train was created especially for her for the Eurovision Song Contest, which became iconic both for Polina Gagarina and for Terekhov himself. By the way, the history of the creation of this masterpiece is very interesting - its sketch appeared literally “on the knee” in 5 minutes and it was sewn together in a week. The dress was made in two colors – white and “liquid silver”. The singer still chose a snow-white dress.
ABOUT KAZAN “The first show of the Alexander Terekhov brand collection in Kazan took place 7 years ago, and since then the brand’s clothing has been a commercial success and occupies a leading position in sales in the VIP category,” notes Lina Kurbanova, founder and head of the luxury retailer VIP Group. On November 15, the Alexander Terekhov Spring/Summer 2018 collection was shown in the Ballroom of the Korston Hotel. More than 35 models were demonstrated to a selective and sophisticated public - everyday, as well as for evening and special occasions. Luxurious evening dresses with scatterings of stones of various lengths became the calling card of Alexander Terekhov. Mini cocktails and real masterpieces of the Russian designer - maxi - were presented here for more significant and important events.
Focusing on the aesthetics and culture of the 1980s and 90s, Alexander Terekhov boldly experiments with a combination of different textures and styles. Feminine models are often mixed with voluminous unisex raincoats, all kinds of khaki bombers and sweatshirts. His silk dresses with a transparent organza cape are amazing.
Dresses with asymmetrical cuts, silk slip dresses, shiny jumpsuits, flowing evening dresses with breathtaking slits and wide shoulders send us back to the frankly sensual style of the eighties era.
Voluminous denim jackets, shiny miniskirts, leather biker jackets and shorts, robe coats and oversize raincoats remind us of the nineties. Only the models' hairstyles take us into modern times and tell us about the main trend of recent years - healthy lifestyle - the models' hair is styled as if they had just left the gym and went to a party.
Terekhov did not spare men either. For them, he prepared double-breasted suits in light shades, parkas and trousers in camouflage colors, classic trench coats and shirts.
An exceptional event - the performance of Alexander Terekhov's muse, singer Polina Gagarina - marked the end of the evening.
Of course, events of this level are rarely held in Kazan, and it seems that the third capital will not soon recover from the show of this brilliant designer.

Personal life
The fashion designer does not talk about his own personal life, believing that matters of the heart should be kept secret.
Alexander Terekhov in 2020
However, in one of the interviews, Alexander admitted that the ideal girl, in his opinion, should be self-confident, have a lively sense of humor and be ready for bold experiments. Such a beauty has a chance to become a muse for Alexander Terekhov.
Alexander Terekhov, son of Margarita Terekhova
Surely many have at least sometimes thought about how hard it is to be the son or daughter of a celebrity. And especially one that is admired by entire generations. So Alexander Terekhov, the son of Margarita Terekhova, fully experienced what it was like to live with an eye on his famous mother. By the way, common to all star children without exception is the prefix “son (or daughter) of so-and-so (or so-and-so),” which invariably follows one’s own name in any publication.
In the photo - Alexander Terekhov, son of Margarita Terekhova
Despite all the inconveniences that his mother’s fame sometimes brought to Alexander Terekhov, he remembers his childhood years with constant tenderness and warmth. Apparently, because the son became a late youngest child for Margarita Terekhova, the boy was surrounded by maternal care and love from childhood. When the child was sick, the actress easily canceled planned concerts and tours. At the same time, according to Alexander Terekhov, the artist’s son, the mother never smothered her children with her love, leaving the right to her own choice and her own mistakes. One of the clearest examples is the unquestioningness with which the ardent believer Margarita Terekhova accepted her son’s decision to be an atheist.

Of course, from his mother, Alexander Terekhov received powerful support (and not only moral) for all his creative endeavors. So, it was from his mother that he received the first voice recorder and the first video camera as a gift back in his school years. Not finding a strong enough desire in himself to graduate from the acting department of VGIK, Alexander Terekhov nevertheless became an actor, playing a role in a film directed by his mother.

In his childhood, the happiness from communicating with his mother and sister was overshadowed only by the fact that for a long time the son of a cinema star did not have the slightest idea who his father was. All the assumptions made by journalists in this regard turned out to be incorrect. Margarita Terekhova eventually revealed his name herself - Sayfiddin Turaev, and also explained the reason why she had not done this before. Naturally, today Alexander Terekhov is an adult and self-sufficient person who, in general, no longer really needs a father. By the way, the son of the famous artist has been a husband and father for a year now. His chosen one was the former soloist of the popular group “Viagra” Tatyana Naynik. Many publications wrote a little more than a year ago that the love of young people turned out to be stronger than even the terrible diagnosis of Alexander Terekhov’s chosen one - the girl has been suffering from panic attacks for several years now. The couple had a daughter in August last year.

Now Alexander Terekhov continues to create, creating new and new images that can satisfy even fastidious fashionistas. In the spring of 2017, a joint collection of designer and model Anna Litvinova was released, consisting of 10 dresses.

And on Alexander’s official website and in the designer’s online store, clothing models that were included in the spring-summer 2020 collection have already appeared.
Alexander Terekhov: from simple to brilliant
If you look at the biography of the young designer, you will notice the determination with which he developed from a simple student to the owner of his own brand.
Born in 1980 in the small town of Vyazniki, already in 1999 Alexander was able to get an internship at the Yves Saint Laurent Fashion House in Paris. This happened thanks to the “Twilight” clothing collection, which the designer created while studying at the Moscow Institute of Fashion and Design. The Paris experience gave me a lot. In fact, it served as the start for the name of Alexander Terekhov to soon be known to the entire fashion world. Collections and ideas were born one after another:
- 1999 – “Meteo 2000”;
- 2002 – collaboration with Alsou in the creation of the singer’s stage costumes;
- 2003 – personal exhibition of sketches;
- 2003-2005 – work with the Reflex group.
2004 became a landmark year for Alexander’s work - the brand received official registration as a line of women’s clothing and related accessories. The assortment for ladies was extremely diverse, but designer Alexander Terekhov chose dresses as the basis for inspiration - and he was right. All the talent of the fashion designer was able to reveal itself in feminine and sophisticated outfits.
Today the whole world knows the name of Alexander Terekhov. Each brand collection is an event that fashionistas, competitors, celebrities and other equally important people look forward to.

- Winner of the second Big Book Prize (season 2008-2009) for the eight-hundred-page novel “Stone Bridge”, the plot of which is based on the investigation of the mysterious murder and suicide of two boys and a girl from among the children of the highest Stalinist elite on the Stone Bridge in 1943. Genre: mockumentary. Critics noted the high quality of the book's text [ source not specified 1005 days
], but attention was also focused on the author's ambiguous coverage of the topic of Stalinism and the disappointing conclusions he made that there is no need to stir up the past, it is impossible to establish the truth, and history is only the fruit of different interpretations .
- On June 3, 2012, Terekhov was awarded the National Bestseller Prize for the novel “The Germans”[4], in which the writer artistically rethought his experience as director of the press center of the prefecture of the Western Administrative District of Moscow in 1999-2008[5].
"Gossip" visiting TEREXOV
Not long ago, the Terexov fashion house became part of Rusmoda, a company headed by Oksana Lavrentieva.
"Gossip" decided to personally meet with the designer and find out how he works in his new place, and at the same time be the first to evaluate the spring-summer 2011 pre-collection, which until now had only been seen by buyers in Milan and Paris. ...We arrived at the studio, where the Terexov office is also located, on Sunday. The spacious rooms are empty, the computers are turned off, and perfect order reigns. Alexander Terekhov drinks tea and tells his friend, Ravshana Kurkova, that yesterday he watched “Kill Bill” for the first time.
While the young actress is choosing outfits to pose for the photographer in, the designer notices, not without pride, that a boutique with his collections recently opened at the Ukraina Hotel. But things from the shoot will not appear there soon - this is a pre-collection, one of four that are produced in a year (two main and two pre-), and it can be expected to go on sale no earlier than in a few months.
During the conversation, we do not notice how Ravshana Kurkova appears from behind the screen. She has already tried on the first look - a dress with a floral print, which formed the basis of the collection. While the photographer is taking the first pictures, I ask the actress about her friendship with Terekhov, about fashion and what projects with her participation we can expect in the near future
Ravshana, have you known Alexander Terekhov for a long time?
If we are talking about my acquaintance with Sasha Terekhov as a designer, then it took place two years ago at the Sochi Kinotavr. I still have before my eyes the unearthly beauty of a silk dress with flowers - probably every girl dreams of this. Even then, judging by how well the item was made, how good it was, it became clear that the designer was not a fly-by-night, that he was in this business for a long time, if not forever. It was clear that he put love for us women into this dress, and this, you see, cannot but bribe.
There is a certain opinion that the creations of Russian designers are incredibly expensive, while the things they create are not always fresh, new and, what is especially offensive, of high quality. Do you agree with this?
It seems to me that there is no need to immediately label things. I am sure that in our country there are designers to whom these definitions are more than suitable. But there are also guys who, perhaps, are not so famous, but they sew original, interesting and high-quality things that have an individual signature and style.
Sasha, of course, belongs to the latter, although he can already be called an accomplished fashion designer. I think in his case the price is determined by the cost of the fabrics and the fact that all his collections are sewn here in Moscow, and not, say, in China.
By the way, I believe that it is not necessary to buy exclusively designer items. I love going to vintage shops and flea markets, choosing interesting accessories - for example, just the other day at the Sunday Market I bought a chic briefcase from the 1960s, all shabby, with cracks of time, I can’t wait for a reason to “walk” it.
During the fitting, you preferred to “manage the process”, clearly understanding what would suit you and what would not. Is it an innate sense of taste or experience working with stylists?
Like many girls, I am convinced that I have a very specific figure. Despite the fact that I eat a lot (and it’s true - during the fitting, Ravshana happily nibbled on cookies, washing it down with sweet tea - approx.), I cannot gain weight. From time to time I am accused of anorexia, but this is not true - it’s just genetics. So, I know for sure that there are colors and styles that suit me, and there are things that absolutely do not decorate me. Many years of experience in finding your own image is telling. One glance at a thing is enough for me to understand whether it is “mine” or not. For example, when I saw this yellow dress with a floral print, I immediately fell in love with it - it’s a pity that I will only be able to wear it next spring.
Readers of Gossip Cop often praise you for your appearances on the red carpet. When going to an event, do you create your own image or resort to the help of professionals?
I have a wonderful friend Oksana. She is a very talented girl with impeccable taste. I try not to bother her over trifles, but when going to important events, I consult with her, listen to her recommendations and sometimes wear what she suggests to me. Unfortunately, I do not have the opportunity to pay for the services of a stylist - this is a very “costly” pleasure. So, as a rule, I wear what suits me.
Ravshana, the expression “style icon” is very popular now. Are there people whose image you would like to emulate?
You know, usually I either like a person or not, and style, of course, has nothing to do with it. I can’t say that there is any girl who is interesting to me only because she perfectly matches a clutch to her shoes, while remaining a mediocre actress and an unpleasant conversationalist.
The energy that comes from the individual is important to me, so my sympathies are with strong, but at the same time feminine women, women with a capital W. Recently, we have begun to replace concepts: we see either independent, but tough and cynical women, more like men, or, conversely, refined and gentle nymphs who are absolutely helpless without outside support. I like people with an active lifestyle, who are not indifferent to what is happening in the world, in the country, in their private life - at work and outside of it. Such people have a position, have a character and, as a result, have their own style of clothing. And they know exactly what suits them and what doesn’t.
A simple example: some time ago, breeches were in fashion - a disgusting model of pants that disfigured any, even the most impeccable figure! But breeches were “in trend” and absolutely everyone wore them.
I believe that it is extremely wrong to become a victim of fashion; on the contrary, you need to create your own image, your own style. You can't wear what is forced on you if it doesn't suit you. Never in my life will I wear something that I will feel uncomfortable in, for example, something very short, very transparent or very low-cut - I know that I will be “in the grip” and thereby ruin the thing, even if it is incredible beauty. In fashion, as in everything else, you need to follow your heart.
Many Western celebrities, even very young ones, create their own lines of fashionable clothing, cosmetics, care products... Have you ever thought about becoming a designer?
I have some ideas about this. But if I decided to undertake such an experiment, it would only be in collaboration with professionals in their field. I think I could be an ideological inspirer or, dare I say it, a muse. I like to try new things, why not? But about the “independent fashion designer Ravshana Kurkova” - you can sleep peacefully, such horror will not happen, I am going to continue doing what I love most in the world - cinema and theater.
By the way, about theater and cinema - since we won’t see Ravshana the fashion designer, where can we look at Ravshana the actress?
There are a lot of projects, one of them is Roman Karimov’s film “Shattered”, in which I am currently filming. The author is a young director (he is only 27 years old!), at the Window to Europe festival, his previous work collected all the awards - from the Grand Prix to the prize for best director. Another project is an eight-episode series for Channel One, “The Last Meeting,” which has a very strong cast: Lenya Bichevin, Mikhail Kazakov, Dima Ulyanov play in it. This is such a retro story about the 1980s, the events unfold around the last meeting of the CIA and the KGB, I play a Spanish spy in it.
And at the end of August we had a pre-premiere screening of the musical play Rooms, staged by Oleg Glushkov (the premiere will take place in September - approx.). We were received wonderfully, it was sold out, more than 700 people gathered in the hall! I was lucky - my stage partners were Alena Babenko, Liza Boyarskaya, Maxim Matveev, Klava Korshunova, artists from Sovremennik and Pyotr Fomenko Workshop.
This performance gave all the actors the opportunity to play diverse roles - everyone in it sings, dances, and moves a lot. I play both a young woman and an old woman. Since this is my theatrical debut, I received tremendous pleasure from the rehearsals, the work, and the energy of the hall. But cinema is my passion and I wouldn’t want to stop there.
After the interview and filming of Ravshana ends, we move to the Trekhgornaya manufactory, where Terexov production and the designer’s office are located. There is a completely different atmosphere here: there are rolls of bright fabrics everywhere, dozens of art books, colored pencils, paints, sketches. In a “creative workshop” setting, we talk with Sasha about what is happening in his life now and how he got into the industry:
How did your passion for fashion begin?
To be honest, I don’t remember myself. My mother says that from childhood I was interested in fashion, leafing through glossy magazines with interest, looking at pictures with bright dresses. And at the age of five I started sewing myself. First he “dressed” the dolls, then the sisters, then he raised the bar and began to “dress” his mother. All this resulted in what is happening to me now. But I can’t say that there was some kind of turning point when I realized that I would be doing fashion all my life.
Realizing that fashion is exactly what you are interested in, did you decide to get a specialized education in Moscow (Terehov’s hometown is Morshansk, approx.)?
Yes, I consciously came to Moscow and decided to enter the Institute of Fashion and Design. Passed the exams and spent several wonderful years within the walls of this institution.
Did you like studying?
Yes, it was fun. All the funniest things happened in the dormitories, which I changed three times during my years of study at the Institute.
I have no doubt that the hostel was fun! Did you like the learning process itself? What were your favorite subjects?
It was interesting to study, although I don’t have any nostalgia for those times yet. I liked many subjects, but most of all I liked the composition and history of costumes.
How did your path to fame begin?
While still studying at the Institute, I took part in the “Russian Silhouette” competition, held at the Pushkin Museum. It happened by accident: I was walking through the institute, saw an announcement that such a competition was taking place, and decided to try my hand. The conditions were simple - you had to draw several sketches (it seems their theme was dedicated to the work of A.S. Pushkin) and bring them somewhere to Ilyich Square. I remember it was bitterly cold, I walked and thought that if I didn’t find the right house now, if the next lane wasn’t mine, then I’d just turn around and leave. I was one of the last to submit the sketches and had already forgotten about it, when it turned out that I took second place and, as a prize, received the opportunity to go to Paris for an internship with Yves-Saint Laurent.
I’ll immediately make a reservation that I spent all the time in the atelier, and met the couturier himself only once - I was brought to the factory where Yves Saint Laurent worked. I talked with him for exactly half a minute - the designer’s day was planned by the hour. He left the office with his bulldog named Muzhik, asked me a couple of questions, wished me good luck and left. So I can’t boast of having a close acquaintance with him (laughs).
What happened next?
Returning to Moscow, I began working for Natalia Pilat - at that time she “dressed” many Russian stars. I was her assistant, helping select outfits for performances and social appearances of various celebrities - for example, my first job was selecting Alsou’s wardrobe for her concert at the Olimpiysky.
Later, I started working on my first collection as part of Russian Fashion Week. It was called "Elf Corporation". There were many dresses and skirts embroidered with rhinestones, and jackets and tops had wings printed on them. I remember everything was so “girly”, shiny...
How did you get there, to RFW?
I just went to their office and applied to participate.
How simple! What about sponsors and support from the “right” people?
I won’t lie: in order to break into this business, money, of course, is important. After the show, they believed in me and began to offer me support.
Tell us about the collection that you presented just the other day in Paris?
This is a pre-collection, it is very romantic, delicate, with a slight retro touch. It was presented in the showroom in Milan, the other day we presented it in Paris, at the professional exhibition PRET A PORTER PARIS, and now it has again moved to sales in Milan. Ravshana and “Gossip” were lucky that we managed to photograph her a little in Moscow.
The inspiration for this collection was a vintage 1940s floral dress that I found in my grandmother's closet as a child. I liked it so much that I cut it into pieces and sewed dresses for dolls from it. My grandmother scolded me greatly for this, but the print stuck in my head so much that I decided to make it the starting point of the spring pre-collection. As a result, we modernized the print and made it in several color options. My favorite model is, of course, the sunny yellow coat. I foresee mixed reactions to it, but we believe in it! (laughs)
Do you make your own prints?
Unfortunately, I don’t know how to draw on a computer, I can only explain what I want and how to do it. I have a friend, Ilya Besedin, he helps me with prints. We have created two very interesting and bright prints for the main summer collection. They are radically different from “flowers”. You can see them at the spring/summer 2011 fashion show in November.
In fact, drawing prints is terribly difficult. Can you imagine, it took more than one week to make the “correct” peas. We come up with several options, print them out on huge sheets of paper, look at them, try them on, realize that we don’t like anything, and start all over again. But, as we know, truth is born in disputes.
Where do you get ideas for your collections?
It’s hard to say... I can’t name any specific sources of inspiration. I love books by old designers, I can endlessly look at their work, maybe I unconsciously draw something from there? Another passion of mine is vintage. Rare dresses brought from Paris, New York and Rome are my “muses”.
After you've had enough of vintage dresses, what do you do with them?
Mostly, I give it to my friends - fortunately, I have a lot of them.
How do you like to spend time outside of work?
I travel a lot. Not long ago I was in Argentina and simply fell in love with this country. There is such nature there! There’s also great meat and a lot of wine, and I love good food.
Do you have a favorite city?
Yes, New York is very alive. I also love Moscow, but it is, of course, completely different.
By the way, about Moscow. Do you think people in the Mother See know how to dress?
There are a lot of “cheerful” people here who are always in a hurry, late, and want to do everything. Recently, fashion has begun to develop and promote in Moscow. More stylish people are appearing. But we are still lagging behind New York - even the homeless look more organic there.
Are there any Western stars you would like to “dress”?
You know, in the West this is very difficult - you can’t just dress up a star like that. Write a letter, call. This is impossible, they won’t even listen to you. In order for celebrities to wear your outfits, you need to collaborate, on a commercial basis, of course, with foreign PR agencies, which through their own channels contact assistants, stylists, and assistants of the stars. Only then, perhaps, something will work out.
But if you dream a little, I would like Kirsten Dunst to wear my dresses - I really like her style. Mischa Barton, who has worn my dresses a few times, is also cool. When she flew to Moscow, we hung out in her room until the morning - just chatting, fooling around, drinking and listening to music. Oh, Misha is very funny!
The most important question that worries Gossip Girls is: do you eat, do you do drugs and do you change your T-shirts?
Well, first of all, I love to eat delicious food and I eat a lot, believe me! I don’t use drugs, I drink, if I can say so at all, in moderation. And I change my T-shirts every day, I just have a lot of them, and most of them are the same.
