Daniel Jacob Radcliffe

(English: Daniel Jacob Radcliffe; born July 23, 1989, London, England, UK) is a British actor.

He is known as the performer of the role of Harry Potter in the long-running series of films of the same name, based on the works of the writer JK Rowling. In 2009, he was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest paid actor of the decade.[1] Received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in California for his contribution to cinema.[2]

Biography[ | ]

Childhood and youth[ | ]

Born on July 23, 1989 in Fulham, west London[3]. The only child in the family. Mother - Marcia Janine Gresham Jacobson, casting agent, native of South Africa of Jewish origin[4], father - Alan George Radcliffe, literary agent, Protestant, born in Banbridge (Northern Ireland)[4]. He was brought up outside of religion[5]. Already at the age of 5, he began to show interest in acting when he appeared in a school production as a monkey. Radcliffe was educated at two private schools for boys: Sussex House School[6], and the City of London School[7]. However, then it became very difficult for him to attend them, because because of his role in the first part of the Harry Potter film, his classmates began to be hostile towards him. As a result, I had to quit school.

Cinema[ | ]

The young actor first appeared on screen in 1999 in the BBC television film David Copperfield[8]. In the same year, he screen-tested for the role of Harry James Potter in director Chris Columbus's film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Filming began in 2000 and release took place in 2001. The film was a huge success, with worldwide box office receipts exceeding $970 million. Before this, Radcliffe appeared in a small role in the film The Tailor of Panama (starring Pierce Brosnan and Geoffrey Rush).

This was followed by sequels - “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”, “Harry Potter and the Hallows” Deaths: Part 1" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2", which made no less impressive collections.

Daniel's fee for participating in the first Harry Potter film was £150,000, for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - £5.6 million, and for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was at least 8 million[9]. Currently, Daniel's net worth is estimated at more than £23 million.[10]

On February 3, 2012, a new film with Daniel’s participation, “The Woman in Black,” was released worldwide, and on March 15, 2012 in Russia, which grossed just under $5 million in Russia.

In one of the episodes of the series “Extras” he starred as himself.

In 2020, Daniel played the role of Amazon survivor Yossi Ginsberg in the psychological thriller “The Jungle” directed by Greg McLean[11].

From February 2007 to February 2009 he played in another theatrical production - “Equus”, based on the famous play by Peter Schaeffer, directed by Thea Sherrock (English) Russian: first in the West End (Gielgud Theater (English) Russian, February 27 - June 9), and then on Broadway (Broadhurst Theatre), September 5, 2008 - February 9, 2009)[13][14].

According to the plot of the play, Alan Strang, a stable boy, out of love for horses, blinds them and goes crazy (the role of psychiatrist Dysert was played by Richard Griffiths - Uncle Vernon

in Harry Potter). After the first photographs of the performance with Radcliffe's naked character were released, many parents demanded that Daniel be stopped from participating in this event, threatening to otherwise prohibit their children from watching his films.[15]

In 2011, he played Jay Pierpont Finch, a window cleaner from New York, in the musical How to Succeed in Business Without Doing Anything.

From February 25 to May 6, 2020, he plays Rosencrantz in Tom Stoppard's play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead at the Old Vic (Joshua Maguire plays Guildenstern).[16] The production received four-star reviews from The Guardian,[17] The Independent[18] and The Telegraph,[19] and Radcliffe's presence ensured that the theaters sold out throughout its run, prompting an extension of the play (from its original closing date of 29 April). On 20 April 2020, the play was broadcast to cinemas in the UK and around the world as part of the National Theater Live project.

Other works[ | ]

In 2007, in the magazine “Rubbish (English) Russian.” His poems were published under the pseudonym Jacob Gershon

(eng. Jacob Gershon).
Mother's maiden name Gresham
is the English version of the Jewish surname Gershon[20][21].

Radcliffe is also involved in the video for the British indie band Slow Club (English)Russian. for the song “Beginners” (2012)[22].

Social activities[ | ]

Daniel makes every possible contribution to the fight for gay rights[23][24]. Taking a stand against homophobia, Radcliffe began appearing in public service announcements in 2009 for The Trevor Project, an organization dedicated to providing educational materials about homosexuality and preventing suicide among LGBT teenagers.[25][26] The actor first learned about the project while working on the play “Equus” in 2008[26]. He made a significant financial donation to this organization[27]. In a 2010 interview, Daniel said:[26][28]

I have always hated those who are intolerant of gays, lesbians or bisexuals. I consider myself very lucky that now I can really help and make my contribution.

I have always hated anybody who is not tolerant of gay men or lesbians or bisexuals. Now I am in the very fortunate position where I can actually help or do something about it.

In the same interview, he spoke about the importance of the participation of public figures in the fight for equal rights[26]. Radcliffe considers this activity one of the most important components of his career[25]. In 2011, the actor was awarded the Hero Award by The Trevor Project[25].

Star Trek actor

The young actor's first film appearance came in 1999 in the BBC television film David Copperfield. The film did not become super popular, but Daniel's acting talent attracted the attention of many directors and film critics. His adult colleagues tirelessly emphasized Radcliffe’s kindness and naturalness, which made working with him easy and pleasant. And already in 2001, Daniel starred in the film “The Tailor from Panama,” where his partners on the set were such Hollywood stars as Pierce Brosnan, Geoffrey Rush and Jamie Lee Curtis. However, of course, Daniel Radcliffe's true finest hour struck after he was cast in the role of the most famous literary character of our time - Harry Potter. More than 1,600 young actors applied for the role of the famous boy with a scar, but, according to the director of the film, Chris Columbus, when, after several months of searching, Radcliffe appeared at the audition, the entire film crew immediately realized that they had found their Harry Potter. And they were right. When Daniel himself found out that he had received this role, he could not hold back his sincere tears of happiness. The first Harry Potter film, The Philosopher's Stone, released in 2001, not only became a huge success among audiences, but also collected an unprecedented amount at the box office. Subsequent films in the saga about the boy wizard were in no way inferior to the first and only year after year consolidated the popularity of the talented actor. In addition to filming the famous Harry Potter, Daniel actively took part in theatrical productions: in 2004 he performed a role in the musical comedy The play what I wrote, in 2007 in the production of Equus, and since 2008 he has appeared on famous Broadway. The actor also recently discovered his literary talent, and in 2007 he published several poems under the pseudonym Jacob Gershon.

When all the Potter episodes were filmed, Daniel did not leave the movie. He continued acting, and in 2012 the film “The Woman in Black” with his participation was released. At the moment, Daniel Radcliffe is not only one of the most popular and famous around the world, but also the most sought-after and highly paid actor. By the way, Daniel Radcliffe is 169 cm tall.

Personal life[ | ]

In 2008, Radcliffe admitted that he suffers from dyspraxia.[29] He cannot tie his shoelaces.

He stated that he is an atheist[30] and is also proud to be a Jew[31][32][33].

In a 2009 interview with Attitude

the actor declared his support for the Liberal Democrats[34].

In 2010, Radcliffe admitted that he had problems with alcohol. The reason for this was the incredible success of the Harry Potter films, and then he decided to devote himself entirely to “this pleasure of life.” However, he soon stopped drinking [ source not specified 123 days

].

In January 2012, Radcliffe announced that he was in a relationship with assistant director Rosie Cocker.[35] But already in October of the same year it became known about their breakup[36]. Since 2012, he has been dating American actress Erin Dark, whom he met on the set of the film Kill Your Darlings. Rumors of their engagement circulated in 2014, but Erin's father denied them in December.[37][38][39][40]

Harry Potter Almost Turned Daniel Radcliffe into an Alcoholic

The fate of child actors is most often sad: when they grow up, their charm goes away, and everyone forgets about them. A good example is Haley Joel Osment from M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense and Steven Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence: now he has gained weight and disappeared in completely unnoticeable films. And in the early 2000s, Spielberg wanted him to become Harry Potter in the film adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s novel...

But Osment was not cast in the role (he is American, and Rowling insisted that all roles be played by Britons), and Spielberg left the project. And the director who replaced him, Chris Columbus, called Daniel Radcliffe , whom he saw in the television adaptation of David Copperfield. And in 2001, 12-year-old Daniel became one of the most famous boys in the world .

And now everything seems to be going well for him: he’s not a superstar, but every year he has some kind of high-profile premiere. And the Potter saga ended in 2011, but Daniel is still not tired of talking about it with journalists and fans. “You know, in my youth I met an old punk from a band that I really loved. I asked him some question about her, and he snapped: “I don’t remember that!” And I thought it must be sad to look back on a huge period in your life and not love it. I feel honored when people come up to me and say, “You were a part of my childhood!”

“THE EASIEST WAY TO FORGET ABOUT ATTENTION TO YOU IS TO GET DRINKED”

After the premiere of the first film about Harry Potter, Daniel became a star, journalists wrote about him, the paparazzi followed him, and gradually this took the form of mild paranoia: the actor began to feel that he was being followed everywhere. He understood that this was an illusion, but the anxiety was persistent, and Daniel began to drown it out with alcohol. “The easiest way to forget about it was to get drunk. And when you are already very drunk, you suddenly realize: “Now people are looking at you because you drank, you need to drink more to ignore them!”

He soon realized that he had to quit, but it turned out to be difficult. He tried several times, his friends helped him with advice... And then Daniel woke up one morning after drinking and thought: “It seems that all this is not good.” And since 2010 he has not touched alcohol.

But “even when I was at my lowest point, I really loved my job. I loved coming to the set, and not once did the thought occur to me, “Oh, I wish none of this had happened, I wish I hadn’t become Harry Potter. And I can honestly say that I never drank at work. That is, it happened that I came to work with my eyebrows still on, but to do so right on set - no, no. Although I can point my finger at many scenes where I am simply nothing, completely devastated!”

The fame that befell the actor almost caused a tragedy, but for nine years Radcliffe has had no problems with alcohol. Photo: GLOBAL LOOK PRESS

Reminiscing about “Potter,” Radcliffe says that his favorite films from this film series are the fifth and final (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II”). “As for the fifth, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, I know that few people can call it their favorite. But I liked acting in it, and I liked watching it afterwards too. It's about the relationship between Harry Potter and his godfather, Sirius Black, and there's a lot of Gary Oldman !"

Daniel believes that Harry Potter will be continued one way or another, or J.K. Rowling's books will be filmed again. “I'm sure I'm not the last Harry Potter I'll see in my life. After all, there are others already,” he said, referring to the actors who played in the theatrical production of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

I NEARLY CRIED IN BULGAKOV’S APARTMENT

On his 21st birthday, Daniel unexpectedly arrived with his then-girlfriend Laura O'Toole and a couple of friends in St. Petersburg, celebrated the holiday in a restaurant in the city center - the bill amounted to a modest 7,000 rubles, and Daniel left more than three thousand as a tip. When he returned, he told reporters about St. Petersburg that it was “the most beautiful, most amazing, incredible city I’ve ever been to.”

A couple of years later, he came to Moscow for the premiere of the horror film “The Woman in Black” and went into Bulgakov’s apartment. It turns out that The Master and Margarita is his favorite novel , which he describes as “a great explosion of imagination, madness, satire, humor and heart.” Radcliffe is an atheist, and said to himself “apparently I’ll end up like Berlioz,” although he noted: “I didn’t believe in God, but after reading it I decided that maybe it’s worth thinking about this topic.” Radcliffe calls the cat Hippopotamus his favorite character in the book. Also in 2012, the series “Notes of a Young Doctor” was released, where Radcliffe played Dr. Bomgard from Bulgakov’s series of stories...

In Bulgakov's apartment, Daniel almost cried from the influx of feelings. But Bulgakov is not the only Russian writer he knows: Radcliffe also respects Dostoevsky, Zamyatin and Gogol.

A FEW MORE FACTS ABOUT THE BIRTHDAY BOY

Daniel Radcliffe - about friendship, losing virginity and filming without clothes

After starring in the global Harry Potter franchise, where his face was featured on everything from pillowcases to toothbrushes, Daniel Radcliffe's looks even more impressive. The boy wizard made the audience see him as a serious man. In 2008, he burst onto Broadway in the production of Equus, made fun of his own image of a child star in the series Extras, and played the main role in the American television adaptation of Bulgakov's A Young Doctor's Notebook. This year, the 25-year-old Brit's transformation is complete with the release of his first romantic comedy. The exemplary hipster rom-com Friendship and No Sex , where Radcliffe tries not to win Zoe Kazan away from the handsome Rafe Spall, is a modern version of the Hollywood masterpiece When Harry Met Sally. Off-screen, Daniel is in a serious relationship with actress Erin Darke, whom he met last year on the set of the drama Kill Your Darlings. Speaking candidly to ELLE, the actor talked about losing his virginity, filming naked and how to behave with friends.

ELLE What do you need to find in a girl's apartment to immediately understand: you are incompatible with her?

DANIEL RADCLIFFE Well, if she had a whole shelf of vegetarian cookbooks, I'd know I was in trouble.

ELLE Doesn't the complete set of Harry Potter books promise more danger?

D.R. Come on! Many people have them. It would be wrong to deprive yourself of a chance because of such a trifle.

ELLE You undressed in “Friendship and No Sex”, completely naked in “Equus”... Are you comfortable naked in public?

D.R. No. Or rather, relatively comfortable. I have to say, the first time I had to take my clothes off on a Broadway stage at age 17, I was freaking nervous.

ELLE Were you embarrassed to date girls who said: “Oh, I saw Equus...”?

D.R. Not particularly. I didn't date a lot of girls at that time. But such a dialogue would most likely continue with the words: “Oh, cool, you saw me naked!”

ELLE What changed for you the day you lost your virginity?

D.R. Hmm... You know, I'm apparently one of the few who had a great first time!

ELLE Really? Did everything go according to plan?

D.R. It was with a girl I knew well. I'm happy to say that I've had a lot more successful sex since then, but my first time wasn't as bad or awkward as others. For example, like my friend who got drunk and indulged in passion with a stranger under a bridge.

ELLE Yeah, do you think it’s better to have sex sober?

D.R. I don’t rule out that for some, drunken sex is the ultimate dream. But personally, I and the person I’m doing this with are much better off sober.

ELLE You once published several poems under a pseudonym. Would you like to share with ELLE readers the poems you wrote for your beloved?

D.R. In my youth, between the ages of 16 and 19, I was interested in writing and during that period I wrote many love poems. But today I can say with full responsibility that there is not a single one of them that I would like to see in print or come across on the Internet. (Laughs.)

Shorty Star

It’s interesting that for the first film Radcliffe received only 150 thousand euros, while the box office receipts for “Harry Potter” amounted to as much as a billion. Of course, this is a lot for a little boy, but for the actor who played the main role it is very little. For comparison, Daniel was paid 8 million euros for the last part. Radcliffe completed his 10-year contract. He was never late for filming and never missed a schedule. Only once did I ask the director for a two-day day off when he was very ill. He did everything that was required of him on the set. David could not do complex tricks himself, because since childhood he has suffered from a rather rare disease - dyspraxia. This is a disease of the musculoskeletal system, which manifests itself in a lack of coordination. He even had difficulty tying his shoelaces - there was no time for dizzying pirouettes on a broom during a game of Quidditch. But in real life, Radcliffe suffered much more not from lack of coordination, but because of his short stature. Now - as an adult - his height is only 165 centimeters. But during the filming of the saga about the boy wizard, short stature turned into an advantage, especially in the latest films - after all, the actor continued to play a schoolboy.

Started my career with a monkey

Daniel Radcliffe, who everyone would later call “the Harry Potter guy,” was born into a family where his mother worked as an acting agent and his father worked as a literary agent. This situation is more typical for residents of the Hollywood Hills. But the Radcliffe family lived in old, prim London. And Daniel himself, from an early age, cherished the dream of becoming a record holder in cricket and winning all possible cups for his native Great Britain. But already at the age of 5 the boy appeared on stage in a children's play. Radcliffe played the monkey. The play was soon followed by a movie - Radcliffe got a role in a film about the magician David Copperfield . It should be noted that the film was shot for the TV channel where the actor’s mother worked.

Filming was over, and a new casting was already looming before little David - friends of his parents, also agents, were actively looking for the main character for the film adaptation of JK Rowling's about Harry Potter. They say that once they saw David, all other viewings were cancelled. Even the writer herself, looking at the boy, admitted that he was “the real Harry Potter.” The contract with Radcliffe and his parents was signed. His term was no less than 10 years.

After the release of the first film about the little wizard, Daniel woke up famous throughout the world. Crowds of fans, constant filming, paparazzi tracking the guy’s every move. But at the school where Radcliffe studied, the boy was disliked. They teased him and insulted him just because he was acting in a movie. As a result, the parents took their son and transferred him to another educational institution.

The Boy Who Lived

Of course, Harry Potter became the pinnacle of creativity for actor Daniel Radcliffe. The list of filmography does not begin with him at all - before that the boy managed to star in the films “David Copperfield” (played a young illusionist) and “The Tailor from Panama”. So, when he walked into a casting studio at the age of 11, where they were looking for an actor who could flawlessly play Harry Potter, he already had some experience and a track record.

From 2001 to 2011, he was very busy filming the Potter series. However, even in such conditions, Daniel Radcliffe managed to act in other films. The filmography (list of films) was also replenished with such films as “Children’s Party in the Palace”, “December Boys” and “My Boy Jack”.

Moreover, he even managed to “show up” in the animated series “The Simpsons”. The hero voiced Edmund, a vampire whose prototype was the vampire Edward from the film “Twilight” (who, by the way, was played by Robert Pattinson, who played an important role in the fourth film about Harry Potter).

Over the next seven years, Radcliffe starred in almost twenty more films, but none of them were successful and are unlikely to be able to do so.

Life after Harry Potter

Despite the fact that the producers did not force Daniel to refuse other offers while working on Harry Potter, he still simply did not have the free time and desire to engage in other projects. There was also no talk of a wife for Daniel Radcliffe. It is worth noting that his fees were rapidly increasing, thanks to which he could afford a measured, luxurious lifestyle. In fact, that's exactly what he did for several years. The actor began to have minor problems with alcohol, which could well have ruined his entire career. However, his loved ones helped him cope. After two years of wild life, the actor came to his senses and appeared on the set in a new role.

For the first time in a new incarnation, viewers could see Radcliffe in a mystical thriller, where he played the role of a young lawyer and tracked down a ghost. Of course, The Woman in Black was not as successful as the Harry Potter films, but the film turned out to be quite successful. He was even nominated for several prestigious awards. Rumors began to appear about Daniel Radcliffe's possible wife, because he had long ceased to be “the boy who lived.”

His next interesting work was the thriller Frankenstein, where Daniel played opposite James McAvoy. He chose the role of an assistant to a talented scientist who was engaged in reviving the dead. Despite such an interesting duet, the film could not meet the expectations of the audience and, unfortunately, did not pay off. Next, the actor plays in the film “Kill Your Darlings,” where Erin Dark and Daniel Radcliffe met.

Radcliffe then appears in the detective thriller Now You See Me 2, where he played the antagonist Walter. The film was warmly received by critics, and the studio earned three times its budget. At the moment, the actor has about 20 works in his filmography, and he is constantly looking for a new field for his talent.

Daniel Radcliffe: childhood and adolescence, personal life, interests

Future actor Daniel Jacob Radcliffe was born in London on July 23, 1989. His father, George Radcliffe, was a literary agent, and his mother, Marcia Jacobson, was a casting agent. Daniel's love for theater began as a child; at the age of 6, he made his stage debut as a monkey in a school production. After this, the boy began to dream of an acting career, and when he turned 9, he successfully passed the casting for the role of young David Copperfield in the film of the same name by Simon Curtis. Radcliffe dropped out of school due to the hostility of his classmates after the release of the first Harry Potter film.

Fans of “Harry Potter” attributed to Daniel an affair with Emma Watson, who played the role of Hermione Granger, and later with Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley), but these rumors were not confirmed. In 2012, the actor briefly dated assistant director Rosie Cocker, but the couple soon broke up. In the same year, it became known about Daniel's relationship with actress Erin Dark, whom they met on the set of the film Kill Your Darlings. In 2014, there were rumors that they were going to get married, but the girl’s representatives denied them.
