In 2010 she was accepted into the troupe of the Moscow Theater on Malaya Bronnaya[1].
Ekaterina Dubakina: “I didn’t think I’d get into directing”
The series “My Fair Nanny” became 14-year-old Ekaterina Dubakina’s debut work on television. Before this, the girl studied in a theater studio and went on stage, where she was noticed. Ekaterina received the role of Masha, the daughter of Maxim Shatalin.
“The theater gave me a lot at once”
Dubakina was born on November 2, 1989 in Sevastopol. The family was here temporarily. When the work trip of the head of the family ended, the Dubakins returned to Moscow. The father continued to work at a computer company, and his daughter (Ekaterina has an older sister) continued studying.
In first grade, her parents sent their daughter to an art school at the Tretyakov Gallery, where she studied painting for two years. At the same time, Katya attended the studio of the Galina Vishnevskaya Music and Theater College and the Joseph Haydn Music School, where she studied piano. Since 2005, Dubakina began taking guitar lessons at the Sergei Prokofiev Music School.
Due to such a range of interests, it was difficult for Catherine to decide on a profession. In high school, she considered journalism. Everything was decided by chance. At the age of 14, Ekaterina, who attended theater college, played a small role in the film “Lonely Sky” by Sergei Rusakov. A year later, Dubakina was invited to the casting of the series “My Fair Nanny.” The bright red-haired girl was noticed by the director's assistant during her performance on the studio stage. Soon Katya was approved for the role of the eldest daughter of the main serial character, played by Sergei Zhigunov.
“I was recognized everywhere. “I didn’t even expect it,” said Dubakina. “Everyone told me that they thought I was bigger, older, taller. On the screen she is a big grown-up girl, but in life she is such a little girl. I am also calmer in life. I don’t have such conflicts with my dad because my parents are more understanding. Any modern girl can find her reflection in Masha. She is kind, unenvious, sincere, believes in everything good, loves her loved ones. She’s just a little naive and doesn’t know life very well.”
In 2010, Dubakina successfully graduated from a theater university and was immediately accepted into the theater on Malaya Bronnaya. Her debut performance on this stage was the production of “Arcadia”. The girl was worried before her first appearance on the theater stage, but the support of her family and teacher who were present in the hall helped her overcome her fear.
“I studied with Sergei Golomazov at the directing department, but in the acting group. This means that we, the actors, studied together with a group of directors and completed all training tasks together: they stage, and we act. It turns out that during the learning process we worked more with classmates than with teachers. From the 3rd year I started rehearsing at Arcadia, and after the 4th year Sergei Anatolyevich took me and some other students into the troupe. We were lucky because there were no green guys in the theater at that time. Therefore, all the girls, fairy tales and young heroines immediately became mine. The theater gave me a lot at once, it was very cool. We were all immediately put to work.”
“You have to forgive if the director is nervous”
Dubakina doesn’t talk about personal things, doesn’t rush to the registry office and tries not to advertise her relationship. In photographs, she can often be seen in the company of colleagues or friends, while her lover remains in the shadows. Catherine rarely remembers the times of My Fair Nanny. Now the actress already has a busy creative and personal life, there is no time for Dubakina to be nostalgic. She loves to travel the world. She is not attracted to southern countries; the actress prefers to spend her holidays in Sweden. Her sister lives here, who works as an ophthalmologist and is involved in the development of new treatments for glaucoma. According to the artist, northern nature is conducive to creativity, especially to writing music.
Dubakina appeared in the comedy films “A Little Out of My Mind” and “Traffic Light”. Upon completion of work in these projects, the artist was invited to star in the series “Think Like a Woman.” But still the theater remains a priority for her. Moreover, Dubakina herself has already tried herself as a director of performances. Her debut was “Suicide” based on the play by Nikolai Erdman.
“A couple of years ago I would never have thought that I would do this. I just wanted some kind of creative movement, and then a small stage just opened up, which makes it possible to experiment,” says Dubakina. – On the big stage, such experiments are impossible due to financial risks, you can’t just have fun there. And then my classmates and I decided to try it. I understood a lot. For example, that the director needs to be forgiven when he starts to get nervous. It is clear that he has no right to do this, but such moments happen. I am a woman myself, I am emotional. I was lucky that the guys, when I had moments of crisis, when the temperature increased, did not take offense at me. They understood that I was nervous not because I thought they were bad, but because I myself was not confident in myself right now. You have to forgive for uncertainty, that’s normal.”
Previously, she considered directing a male profession: “No one planted this idea in me, it was somehow initially in my head. There has never been a situation where someone told me that a woman cannot be a director. I have always infringed on myself in some way. Now I feel that I have already stepped over this barrier in myself and realized how far behind the times I am.”

An excerpt characterizing Dubakin, Ekaterina Aleksandrovna
- Well, what if Marya Genrikhovna becomes king? – Ilyin asked. - She’s already a queen! And her orders are law. The game had just begun when the doctor’s confused head suddenly rose from behind Marya Genrikhovna. He had not slept for a long time and listened to what was said, and, apparently, did not find anything cheerful, funny or amusing in everything that was said and done. His face was sad and despondent. He did not greet the officers, scratched himself and asked permission to leave, as his way was blocked. As soon as he came out, all the officers burst into loud laughter, and Marya Genrikhovna blushed to tears and thereby became even more attractive in the eyes of all the officers. Returning from the yard, the doctor told his wife (who had stopped smiling so happily and was looking at him, fearfully awaiting the verdict) that the rain had passed and that she had to go spend the night in the tent, otherwise everything would be stolen. - Yes, I’ll send a messenger... two! - said Rostov. - Come on, doctor. – I’ll watch the clock myself! - said Ilyin. “No, gentlemen, you slept well, but I didn’t sleep for two nights,” said the doctor and gloomily sat down next to his wife, waiting for the end of the game. Looking at the gloomy face of the doctor, looking askance at his wife, the officers became even more cheerful, and many could not help laughing, for which they hastily tried to find plausible excuses. When the doctor left, taking his wife away, and settled into the tent with her, the officers lay down in the tavern, covered with wet overcoats; but they didn’t sleep for a long time, either talking, remembering the doctor’s fright and the doctor’s amusement, or running out onto the porch and reporting what was happening in the tent. Several times Rostov, turning over his head, wanted to fall asleep; but again someone’s remark entertained him, a conversation began again, and again causeless, cheerful, childish laughter was heard. At three o'clock no one had yet fallen asleep when the sergeant appeared with the order to march to the town of Ostrovne. With the same chatter and laughter, the officers hastily began to get ready; again they put the samovar on dirty water. But Rostov, without waiting for tea, went to the squadron. It was already dawn; the rain stopped, the clouds dispersed. It was damp and cold, especially in a wet dress. Coming out of the tavern, Rostov and Ilyin, both in the twilight of dawn, looked into the doctor’s leather tent, shiny from the rain, from under the apron of which the doctor’s legs stuck out and in the middle of which the doctor’s cap was visible on the pillow and sleepy breathing could be heard. - Really, she’s very nice! - Rostov said to Ilyin, who was leaving with him. - What a beauty this woman is! – Ilyin answered with sixteen-year-old seriousness. Half an hour later the lined up squadron stood on the road. The command was heard: “Sit down! – the soldiers crossed themselves and began to sit down. Rostov, riding forward, commanded: “March! - and, stretching out into four people, the hussars, sounding the slap of hooves on the wet road, the clanking of sabers and quiet talking, set off along the large road lined with birches, following the infantry and battery walking ahead.
