The scandal with Konstantin’s refusal to go to the fight with the mandatory challenger for the IBF in Colombia received a great public response. At that time, armed unrest in the country was in an active phase, but the leadership did not consider this an obstacle and threatened the athlete with the removal of the title. Thanks to lawyers, through the court, the fight was postponed and moved to Australia.
Kostya lost the title on May 31, 1997 in a fight against Vince Philips. The American won by technical knockout in the 10th round. Konstantin managed to regain his championship belt only on November 28, 1998, with a victory over Diosbelis Hurtado.
