“When we skated together for many years in the same group with Natalya Ilyinichna Dubova, I with Samvel Gezalyan, and Sasha with his wife Maya Usova, there was a gulf between us. This happened when Dubova’s group moved from Moscow to Lake Placid. The town is tiny, there are no acquaintances - naturally, we spent all our free time in one group. I felt terrible. I realized that I fell head over heels in love and I couldn’t help myself. I told myself that I shouldn’t disrupt other people’s relationships in any way, especially since Maya and Sasha had a very important Olympics ahead of them. At the same time, I felt that we were uncontrollably drawn to each other. Even during training. As soon as our eyes met, we immediately began to smile and instantly turned away from each other. Then all this became noticeable to others.
I actually wanted to leave America, quit figure skating, just so as not to see Sasha. I understood that this would not lead to anything good. Nobody believed that we were developing a serious relationship. They branded me with shame, accusing me of all mortal sins, they said that Sasha would never be with me, but I just rushed headlong into the pool,” said Navka.
Passions during the decisive period of preparation for the main start of the cycle really ran high.
“I arrived at the Olympics in Lillehammer empty-handed: I had neither strength nor emotions,” Usova later recalled. – Two months before the tournament, when my and Sasha’s mothers came to America, I was forced to deal with the police. The point was this: Sasha turned his attention to Navka. I was simply dying. And then Tanya’s partner, hot oriental man Samvel Gezalyan, beat Navka with the words: “How can you do this to Maya, she’s your friend.” Then our mothers fought.”

Natalya Mikhailova’s greatest achievement in her career occurred precisely under the leadership of Zhulin. Paired with Arkady Sergeev in 2006, she won silver at the World Junior Championships.

Alexander doubted, but understood that he wanted to be with Natalya forever. The man was worried about how his daughter, his wife Tatyana, would react to this (although, as Zhulin himself says, at that time their marriage was already purely nominal). But all the obstacles were left behind and the lovers were able to be together.

After Lillehammer, Dubova sent Tatyana to train with Gezalyan in Moscow. This condition was set by Usova, who continued to skate with Zhulin; their couple planned to participate in professional competitions.

By that time, they had already broken up with Maya, lived separately, but I could not come to Lake Placid with Samvel - Maya was categorically against me skating. But I made up my mind. We began to live together, I even went to training, because I couldn’t give up figure skating so quickly. Maya’s condition of not seeing me anywhere reached the point of absurdity - if I noticed Maya’s car near the supermarket, I would immediately turn around and drive away - I knew that all the consequences of her mood would spill over into Sasha during the training.
For his sake I was ready to do anything. But at the same time, I began to feel that I was simply going crazy from the isolation of my existence. We decided to leave Lake Placid for Simsbury. I was aware that, perhaps, with no other partner I would not reach the level that I reached with Gezalyan, but for me it was much more important to be next to Sasha. I started performing with Nikolai Morozov. Sasha trained us, while continuing to skate himself. Moreover, he regularly traveled to Lake Placid to train with Maya - it’s four hours one way by car. A year later, I was offered to try skating with Roman Kostomarov from Natalya Linichuk,” Navka recalled.
It was at this moment that the relationship between Navka and Zhulin passed the first crash test - Grischuk reappeared on the horizon.

“Tanya trained with Kostomarov, and I was unemployed,” said Zhulin. “Usova said firmly: “I won’t ride with you anymore.” And she paired up with Zhenya Platov. He left Oksana Grischuk, with whom he endlessly quarreled. I lost my entire business - I didn’t train, I didn’t go on tours, which bring figure skaters their main income.
Tanya worked hard in training, got tired, came home and literally fell. But I was kicking ass and, as a man accustomed to earning money and working, I felt extremely uncomfortable. And then a thought came to mind: why not pair up with Oksana Grischuk? I shared this idea with Tanya. She, as an intelligent woman with phenomenal intuition, was against it. They say correctly: don’t wake up the trouble while it’s quiet. But, alas, I did not listen to her opinion. And it was difficult for me at that time to refuse a promising job.
Despite Tanya’s protests, I called Oksana: “What if we get together?” She agreed, and we began to prepare for the World Professional Championship. At first, the relationship with Grischuk was purely partnership, but soon the old things came back to mind. I admit, I gave up. At some point, it seemed that Tanya didn’t really need me - she was at the skating rink from morning to evening, getting so exhausted that in the evening she fell into bed and instantly fell asleep. She has no strength to talk or watch a movie. I felt lonely and went to Oksana.
“You are making the biggest mistake in your life,” Tanya said goodbye. Five days apart was enough for me to understand that she was right. Finding myself under the same roof with Oksana, I felt that this was not my person at all. I came to Tanya and threw myself at her feet. She forgave."
Roman Kostomarov skated with Navka for one season, after which he suddenly left for Anna Semenovich, which provoked serious changes in Tatyana’s personal life.
“At some point, Roman said: “You know, Tanya, I’m leaving for another partner.” I was horrified and shocked. Well, we quarrel, well, who doesn’t quarrel? There are no such couples. These were the best months of my life. Maya finally agreed to the divorce, I felt great, became prettier, got up in the morning whenever I wanted, worked a little as a trainer - two to three hours a day. In the evenings, Sasha and I always went out somewhere. To a restaurant, to a disco. Sasha became a very desirable child for both of us. From the first days of her life she began to smile and was very energetic,” said Navka.
“We moved to New York, bought a luxurious townhouse on the Hudson overlooking the Twin Towers on credit, and lived happily ever after. At that time I was quite a wealthy person: having invested money in stock market shares, which were growing by leaps and bounds, I received a stable, solid profit. As if by magic, Tanya immediately became pregnant. We got a coaching job, teaching American children how to skate. Tanya was on skates almost until she gave birth. “One day, when Sashenka had already appeared, and we were all lying on the bed at home together, Tanya said: “If only Romka had called and apologized now.” He called a day later.
