Actor Roman Ageev: biography, films and interesting facts

Childhood and family of Roman Ageev

Roman was born in a small town with the romantic name Polyarnye Zori.
According to the actor’s own recollections, his parents were very strict, they often punished him - they “pulled” him with a belt and put him in a corner, for which he is very grateful to them. As a boy, Ageev was interested in theater, and he had a desire to become an actor since childhood. Immediately after graduating from school, Roman went to St. Petersburg to study acting there. For this purpose, the Academy of Theater Arts was chosen, where he entered and began taking a course with Spivak. Ageev graduated from it in 1999.

Personal life

Despite his enormous theatrical experience, as well as many film roles played, Roman is a very non-public person. He practically does not give interviews, limiting himself to short comments. It is known that Roman met his love in the 90s and got married in 1998. His wife’s name is Alena, nothing more is known about her, but Ageev speaks with pleasure about his own children. The family is raising a boy Oleg and a girl Marfa, the actor dreams of a third child.

Roman devotes all his free time to the upbringing and education of children. The wife teaches them music, while the actor reads fairy tales and helps them study the exact sciences. The happy family spends every summer in Crimea, which has a beneficial effect on the health of children.

The first films with Roman Ageev

In the same 1999, the actor began acting in films. In the well-known film “Gangster Petersburg” he starred in the role of the bandit Lobaz. He was lucky enough to work with Sergei Bodrov and Oksana Akinshina in the film “Sisters”, where Ageev is the crime boss Alik. This film made Roman a recognizable actor. Critics praised this film as a cinematic masterpiece.

Roman Ageev on the set of the film “Sisters”

You can see him in small roles in the series “Empire Under Attack,” which was filmed in 2000, and in the series “Deadly Force,” where the actor starred from 2000 to 2007. In 2000, he received a minor role in a melodrama called “The Garden Was Full of the Moon” by Melnikov.

In the comedy “Garden” by Ovcharov, Ageev successfully coped with the main role. The work turned out to be very interesting for Roman. For the first time he played classics in films. He had similar experience in the theater, but not in cinema. It was work in a historical film, in a historical costume.

Before filming the scenes, there were rehearsals, the filming was somewhat reminiscent of a theatrical production. It was precisely because of the many hours of rehearsals that many actors described Ovcharov as a monster. The invitation to audition for the role of Lopakhin was more than unexpected for Ageev; in addition, the actor was shocked by the fact that it was a classic. Nowadays there is little interest in it, so it is rare for directors to decide to shoot such things. As the actor himself said, every day of filming brought him a lot of new and shocking things, but at the same time, he gained enormous experience in filming films, valuable acting experience.

He really liked working with Ovcharov and, according to his own feelings, thanks to this role, he grew in terms of skill. Giving an interview about filming this film, Ageev said that filming and acting based on Chekhov is not easy.

In his opinion, Shakespeare is a much easier material, where you can “sculpt”, which you cannot do with Chekhov. Roman noted that not every director can make a film based on Chekhov, since for this you need to have some kind of solution, which Ovcharov just had. That is why Roman Ageev accepted the offer to star in this film and did it with great pleasure.

Movie

Roman’s debut roles were in the TV series “Gangster Petersburg” and “Streets of Broken Lanterns.” The actor became famous after the film “Sisters” by Sergei Bodrov Jr. There Roman played the crime boss Alik.

The actor’s first leading role was in the comedy “The Garden” by Sergei Ovcharov. The film is an adaptation of the play by A.P. Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard". The novel appears in it in the role of Lopakhin. By the way, it was then that he played a classic in a movie for the first time. As Roman himself said, he then gained extensive experience in filming films. In one of his interviews, the actor said that filming and acting based on Chekhov is not easy, and, besides, not every director can make a movie based on this writer.

Roman also has many works in TV series, including “Black Raven”, “Mistress of the Taiga”, “Caviar Baron”, “Provincial”, “Collection”, “Men Don’t Cry” and others.

Roman Ageev in TV series

Roman played roles in a number of TV series, which, unfortunately, did not have much success with the viewer: “Black Raven” (this series also starred Tatyana Kolganova, Anna Samokhina, Evgeny Dyatlov, Yolka and others), “Kingdom of the Crooked...”, “Named Baron”, “Collection”, “Men Don’t Cry”, “Catherine’s Musketeers”.
Film "TRAP". Natalya Pallin / Roman Ageev It should be noted that Roman Ageev does not often act in films, preferring to work on television and in the theater. Since 2005, at the Youth Theater he has been playing in productions of “The Cry from Odessa” and “Othello”, etc. The play “Othello” by Uteganov, where Ageev plays the role of Othello, is not staged quite traditionally. There, Othello is not a maddened jealous man, he is an employee who hears gossip about Desdemona’s betrayal and wants to kill her only in order to whitewash himself in the eyes of his subordinates. In the production, Othello himself does not believe in treason, but is afraid that he will forever remain a “cuckold.”

The best moments from the film Sisters with Roman Ageev In the play “A Cry from Odessa,” Roman plays Mendel Crick himself, a man whose thirst for life is exorbitant. The actor brilliantly manages to show Mendel’s indomitable nature and his deep drama.

Movies

Yesterday's film academy graduate was welcomed with open arms. The fact is that Roman was not afraid to start his career with television films and series, which his colleagues are often not too fond of. It turned out that the type of actor - a strong physique and a courageous face - was very much in demand in this genre, and this allowed Ageev to literally immediately occupy his niche.

Roman Ageev in the film “Sisters”

The film actor’s first work was the role of bandit Labaz in the cult TV series “Gangster Petersburg.” The novel fit perfectly into the image, which later allowed directors to call him for similar roles. For example, Ageev was invited to play the character of crime boss Alik in the television film “Sisters,” where director Sergei Bodrov himself and rising star Oksana Akinshina took part.

In addition, it turned out that the actor’s type is suitable for both criminal personalities and their opposites: police officers, special forces, military and other positive characters, which allowed the actor to greatly expand his own role.

Roman Ageev in the film “Marriage Contract”

For a long time, the actor received exclusively minor and episodic roles. Roman Ageev played the only major role during this period in the farcical comedy “Cinderella in Boots,” which adapts the plot of the famous classic fairy tale by Charles Perrault to the realities of a Russian military unit and tells the story of a private who dreams of going to a rock concert. But by the end of the 2000s, the actor’s career took off, and Ageev began to be regularly offered bright and large roles.

Of special note is his participation in the comedy project “The Garden,” which was released in 2008. The film was an adaptation of Chekhov's play The Cherry Orchard. When Roman received a call from the studio and was offered to audition for the role of Lopakhin, the actor was initially shocked. First of all, he was surprised by the format of the project itself, since in Russia it is quite rare to see film adaptations of classical works.

Tatyana Kolganova, Sergei Makhovikov Makhovikov and Roman Ageev on the set of the film “The Personal File of Captain Ryumin”

Ageev came to audition and was greatly impressed by the style of work of director Sergei Ovcharov, who approved the artist for the role of the merchant. The work, like the character himself, allowed him to step away from his role for a while and show the audience a completely different side of his acting talent.

A year later, the actor starred in the leading roles in three projects at once: in the psychological thriller “The Personal File of Captain Ryumin”, the crime drama “The Trait” and the adventure comedy “The Marriage Contract”.

Roman Ageev in the TV series "PPS-2"

In 2010, this trend only intensified. Roman Ageev played the main roles in the action adventure film “Sea Devils. Fate", detective story "PPS", crime melodrama "Hide and Seek", ironic detective story "Grey Horse" and mystical thriller "I'm Waiting for You". In addition, the actor received a minor but prominent role in the crime film “Revenge Without Transfer.” And such a demand for the actor was not an isolated case.

The actor received no less offers both a year after that and two years later. In addition, sequels of popular series began to be filmed, in the first seasons of which the actor appeared. For example, in 2012, Roman Ageev returned to the main role in the detective television series “PPS-2”.

Roman Ageev in the film “Leningrad 46”

Every year, on average, 2-3 series are released with the participation of Roman Ageev in leading roles. The artist participated in the filming of the multi-part films “Black Raven”, “Palm Reader”, “Foundry”, “Bandit”, “Escape” and “Catherine’s Musketeers”. In the latter, Roman played Count Grigory Orlov.

One of the subsequent striking films released with Ageev’s participation was the crime drama “Leningrad 46,” which tells about life in post-war St. Petersburg. But even in this essentially historical film, the actor had to play the role of a bandit named Ivan, who is a member of the Teacher’s gang. Filming for the series took a year and a half, and the film was released on television in March 2020.

Actor Roman Ageev is married and has two children

According to Roman, his parents punished him as a child, and he does the same. But he believes that children should under no circumstances be afraid of punishment, they just need to clearly understand that they can be punished for some offenses. If a child is punished, the parents must explain to him why. Every evening, a caring father bathes his children and reads to them before bed; he and his wife decided that this would be the right thing to do. Although the actor himself calls himself a lazy dad and reads fairy tales with reluctance. Since his wife took on the responsibility of teaching music to the children, Roman decided to study the exact sciences with his son. For Ageev, it is much easier to teach his son to ride a bicycle or row a boat. But that's all ahead. The main thing is to have free time.

Every summer the family goes to Crimea for one month. Parents believe that children should absolutely not be in St. Petersburg all summer, as this will have a negative impact on their health. Grandparents, unfortunately, live far away, which makes it impossible to send children to them for at least a month. On the other hand, the Ageevs are so attached to their children that they cannot even imagine how they would live even a day without them.

In one of his interviews, Roman Ageev, when asked about the existence of a marriage contract, replied that there was none, but at the same time he and his wife were living well. He never thought about a prenuptial agreement, believing that the most important point in marriage is responsibility for children, and not personal financial well-being.

Ageeva’s wife studied music with the children from an early age, teaching them to read music and play the piano. In addition, both children attend sports clubs.

As for parenting methods, Roman believes that parents should punish their children. However, this should not be an end in itself. It is important that the child understands that he will have to answer for some offenses.

For several years now, every summer the Ageevs have been traveling to Crimea for one month. Roman and his wife believe that St. Petersburg is not the best place to spend school holidays. Unfortunately, grandparents live far away, so it is impossible to send children to them.
