Youth
“Splin” soloist Alexander Vasiliev was born on July 15, 1969 in St. Petersburg. His parents were engineers. Alexander spent most of his youth in the cultural capital of Russia. He lived in Lithuania with his family for only a couple of years. Vasiliev fell in love with music from an early age. Already in the seventh grade, he organized his first group, and his studies immediately faded into the background. In 1986, Vasiliev met Alexander Morozov. This fateful meeting happened by chance. A friend of Vasiliev invited him to a rehearsal. The future bassist of the group "Spleen" Morozov played in it. The guys regularly went to concerts and dreamed that someday the audience would applaud them. The first group, which was formed while still in school, was called “Mithra”. She became the prototype of the now legendary Russian rock band “Splin”.
Childhood and youth
Alexander was born in Leningrad in 1969. But his family did not stay there for long. They moved to Sierra Leone. A few years later - to Lithuania, to Zarasai. Sasha returned to the future St. Petersburg only at the age of seven. I studied very diligently at school. He was an example for his classmates. This continued until the eighth grade.
Suddenly Vasiliev became seriously interested in music. I began to gradually master playing the guitar. The guy composed his own songs, played for his friends and dreamed of a musical career.
However, after graduating from school, Alexander chose a different specialty. He became interested in aviation instrumentation. Sasha entered the Leningrad university. But he didn’t give up music. He began performing in the Mitra group. True, the team broke up very quickly, as the guy was drafted into the army.

First works
In their younger years, the group did not have money to record their songs. At first, the guys recorded their debut tracks at Alexei Morozov’s apartment. Only after that did the Splin group have the opportunity to record tracks in special studios. At that time, the team began to grow. Among the newcomers was Oleg Kuvaev, who later made the cartoon “Masyanya,” and Vasiliev’s future wife, Alexandra. There were many difficulties on the path of beginning musicians. The group “Mirna” did not even manage to join the Leningrad rock club. The team, despite the setbacks, continued to develop.
Second wife of Alexander Vasiliev, children
Alexander Vasiliev's second wife is Olga Zhurba. In 2014, the couple had a beloved son, Roman, and in 2020, the wife of the popular singer presented him with a wonderful gift - the long-awaited daughter Nina. Children are the joy and pride of Alexander Vasiliev. Alexander, as an experienced father of three children, carefully looks after his little daughter.
Olga is an excellent cook. And she happily indulges her husband and son in their taste preferences. And Sasha Vasiliev is a great gourmet. Most often he prefers exotic dishes. For example, he loves spicy Chinese dishes. At the same time, he doesn’t know how to cook himself, but likes to eat what his wife cooks or dine in a restaurant.

Military service and theater work
The lead singer of “Splin” Alexander Vasilyev, having dropped out of school, went to serve in the army. There, throughout his entire service, he was a clerk. During the service, Vasiliev did not stop writing songs. A small part of them was later included in the album “Dusty True Story”. After serving in the army, Alexander, with the help of a friend, gets a job as a stage assembler. At the same time, he studied at the theater institute. The lead singer of “Splin” Alexander Vasiliev also worked as a night watchman. In 1993, he and his friend Morozov got a job at the Buff Theater. But the following year they decided to leave there. The time spent there was not in vain. It was at the Buff Theater that they met keyboard player Nikolai Rostovsky.
Biography of the singer and composer
Alexander Georgievich Vasiliev (07/15/1969) is a native Petersburger. However, at the beginning of his life he lived with his parents in West Africa. His mother is a philologist, and his father worked on the construction of a seaport. Then the family moved to Lithuania, and in 1976 the Vasilievs returned to their native St. Petersburg. It was in this city that Sasha, as a twelve-year-old teenager, first heard the concert of the popular group “Time Machine” at that time, with which his love for rock music began.
Alexander’s favorite city has always been and remains Leningrad (St. Petersburg). There he was born, graduated from high school, and entered college. And in 1988, Vasiliev was called up to serve in the Soviet Army. Sasha served in a construction battalion. He wrote a cycle of songs about this period of his personal life, which were included in his music album called “Dusty True.”
In 1992, Vasiliev decided to begin studying at the Faculty of Economics of the Leningrad Theater Institute, while working at the same time at the Buff Theater. The sound engineer of this theater is Alexander Morozov, a future member of Splin, thanks to whom Alexander Vasiliev and Nikolai Rostovsky (keyboardist of the now popular Splin group) met in 1993.
Alexander Vasiliev and the group "Splin"
After meeting, the young musicians began working on their first music album. In 1994, in honor of the end of this project, our heroes gathered for a friendly meeting, where Sasha Vasiliev and Stas Berezovsky met, which turned out to be an important milestone in the singer’s biography. And 1994 is recognized as the beginning of the existence of the now popular group “Spleen”.
Group "Spleen"
In 2004, Alexander’s famous album “Drafts” was released. “I’m happiest when I’m composing a song of my own. But when it’s finished, and I feel that it’s a powerful thing, I feel great joy. This charge lasts me for a long time.” During its existence, the Splin group released fifteen discs.
Currently, the group "Splin", whose heart is Alexander Vasiliev, is a musical project that has brought the singer not only great success, but also gratitude, as well as sincere love from listeners. The popular band is considered to be one of the founders of the “Russian rock” style.
Formation of the group “Splin”
At that time, the lead singer of “Splin” Alexander Vasiliev, together with his partners, was not yet famous. Therefore, they needed to find funds to record their first album. Aspiring musicians participated in dubbing advertisements and gave concerts in front of a small audience. The creation date of the legendary domestic group “Splin” is May 27, 1994. She celebrated the recording of her first album in a restaurant. There the band met guitarist Stas Berezovsky. The musicians themselves had no idea that their first album would gain such popularity. About 10 thousand audio cassettes were sold in the group’s homeland alone. Several songs from the album were broadcast on radio stations in St. Petersburg. This undoubtedly added new fans to the rock band.
The leader of the group "Splin" Alexander Vasiliev celebrates his 50th anniversary
Vasiliev will not go on stage on his anniversary (this form of celebration has become a pleasant and comforting habit for many artists - most recently, on July 8, Diana Arbenina also sang and collected gifts). He, a native Petersburger, will, according to our information, spend this day with his family (Alexander has a wife and two sons) and with friends. As they say, in a narrow circle.
A year ago, a RG observer found himself in one, and someone asked him about the upcoming 25th anniversary of the group (the date of its birth is considered to be May 27, 1994 - it was on this day that the debut album was completed) and about the anniversary. To which Alexander sternly retorted: “I don’t want to think about how old I am and know how old the group is. It doesn't matter to me. I just want to write new songs and perform concerts!” Fairly said and, perhaps, instructive for all of us too. Maybe this is how we should live?
By the way, Splin releases new albums more often than other famous rock bands. Since 2014, he has released four studio discs - “Resonance. Part 1", "Resonance. Part 2", "The Key to the Cipher" and "Oncoming Lane".
And Vasiliev, who once said that “every self-respecting group, in addition to other albums, must have at least one concert album (the group already has three of them, by the way) and one double album (two parts of Resonance”), one might say, has fulfilled his minimum program (he himself, of course, did not mention any programs). And without a doubt, he will soon begin to implement the program for the next 25 years.
There are no new songs yet. But it seems that Splin's main business this summer is participating in rock festivals. The group has already played “Usadba Jazz” and “Wild Mint” at the open air, ahead of them is “Invasion” (“Spleen” will close its concert program, appearing on the main stage on the evening of July 21). Then there will be Rostov Roof Music (August 16, Rostov-on-Don), Live Fest Summer (August 18, Sochi), festivals in Belarus and Estonia. And then we wait again for new songs.
Five facts about the group "Spleen"
Alexander Vasiliev came up with the name of the group after reading the lines of the St. Petersburg poet Sasha Cherny: “I am moth-eaten by spleen, sprinkle me with mothballs.” Another example of the benefits of reading books.
The musicians earned money to record their debut album by starring in advertising (singing in a video to a Paul McCartney tune), and working at the Buff Theater and at a confectionery factory. For some time Vasiliev was a night watchman.
The legendary Rolling Stones chose “Spleen” to perform as an opening act before their concert at Luzhniki in 1998. But for some reason they weren’t allowed to take advantage of the stage light and the chance to properly tune in, obviously saving all the best technical capabilities for themselves;
“Spleen” seems to have always been indifferent to titles and prizes. At the MTV annual awards ceremony, Splin was going to be honored in 2007 as the best rock band. But none of the musicians came to Moscow to receive awards. The hosts of the ceremony even became numb from such nihilism and, as it seemed to them, disrespect. There was a pause, after which Mikhail Segal (later a famous film director, and then the author of the group’s video for the song “Say”) came up on stage. “Who are you? - the presenter Alexander Anatolyevich asked him sternly. - I do not know you!". And no matter how much Segal tried to persuade him, no matter how much he explained about the video, he never gave the director the honorary statuette.
It seems like everyone loves the songs “Spleen”. And so do filmmakers. The group's songs are heard in 17 films. The most famous of them, of course, are “Brother-2” (“Life Line”), “Live” (“Holiday” and “Romance”) and “Warrior” (“Bonnie and Clyde”). Moreover, the champion here is the single “Romance”. It appears in four films - “Alive”, “Vacation”, “Pitfalls” and “After You”.
The beginning of the popularity of the group “Splin”
The group’s first album, “Spleen,” was so popular that various popular labels subsequently decided to reissue it on CD. In 1994, the first official concert of the group “Splin” took place in a small club. In 1995, the lead singer of the group “Splin” began work on the album “Collector”. Then he successfully negotiates in Moscow, and the debut video “Be My Shadow” begins to be broadcast on ORT. Thanks to this, the group gained a considerable number of new listeners. Soloist Vasiliev began to be recognized on the streets. Then it became clear that the group had reached a new level.
Career continuation
In 1997, the group presented the album “Lantern Under the Eye”. A large number of people gathered at his presentation. At that time, the lead singer of “Splin” Vasiliev already had a whole army of fans. Their songs were regularly played on the radio. In the same year, the group “Splin” had its first big concert. It received low reviews from fans who attended. Despite this failure, the group continued to work hard and success awaited them at the next concert in Luzhniki. In 1997, personnel changes occurred in the Splin team. They have a new producer, Alexander Ponomarev. And at one of the concerts, Vasilyev’s partner was Yan Nikolenko, although he was not officially in the group.
Alexey Meshcheryakov
Alexey is a young drummer of the band “Splin”. I have been eating for 35 years now. The man was born in Leningrad and was interested in music from an early age. As a teenager, he went to music school to study piano. After 3 years, he quit classes and became interested in percussion instruments. At school, the young man did poorly because he was only interested in music. Gradually he decided that he wanted to become a drummer.
Alexey was in many groups before he became part of Splin. He played in “Katyusha”, “Ka. Meshcheryakov tried himself in different fields and developed as a drummer. One day he dared to contact Alexander Vasiliev. This happened in 2005. He asked the leader of the Spleen group to consider his candidacy. At that time, the drummer left the band. Alexander agreed to accept Meshcheryakov into the group. Since then, the man has become part of the Splin team. Alexey is happily married to Yulia Meshcheryakova. In 2020, his daughter was born. Alexey does not forget about his family, but at the same time is actively involved in creativity. He tries to combine his career and personal life.
Release of the album “Pomegranate Album”
In 1998, the guys released their 4th album. At the end of the summer of that year, the group “Spleen” was invited to perform for the legendary group The Rolling Stones. A little later, the group was officially replenished with two wonderful musicians: Yanik Nikolenko and Sergey Navetny. By that time, the group “Spleen” was no longer given rest by numerous fans. In April 2004, the team turned 10 years old. In honor of this significant event, Alexander Vasiliev released the album “Drafts”. It includes the soloist's songs written since 1988.

In the same year, the group “Splin” released the album “Reverse Chronicle of Events” to the delight of its many fans. In addition to hits, it also contained experimental tracks, hard rock ballads and guitar compositions. In those days, the popular band toured regularly, and not all musicians could keep up with the current busy schedule. A significant loss was the departure of drummer Sergei Navetny.
Work on the ninth album “Split Personality”
In 2005, the group “Spleen” went on a big tour of America. In cities such as Chicago, New York and Boston, large numbers of fans of “Spleen” gathered. In parallel with this, the team began work on their ninth album. On April 2, 2006, the “Fuzz Prize” festival took place in his homeland. The popular rock band really surprised its fans. After the army
Returning to civilian life, Sasha again took up higher education. However, this time I chose economics as a specialty. And again I did not graduate from university. Returned to music. In 1994, he presented an album called “Dusty True”. This is how the group “Spleen” appeared.
The first album immediately brought the band considerable success. Konstantin Kinchev even invited the St. Petersburg group to perform as his “warm-up act.”
