Do you have this “training” now?
Not now. Sanya Molochnikov recently called me and, as sharply as he can, with his energy, he took on me. He says, let me send you the play, read it, but it would be better if you came to the Moscow Art Theater, we would rehearse right away. It was joyful, and then... You see, you have to immerse yourself in the theater for three months, and now I have such a schedule that it is very difficult.

Two years ago we shot the pilot for the film “Year of Culture”, I have a very interesting character in it, popular, recognizable, I have never played one like that before. It’s “settle”, I agree with you. For a long time I did not understand where this would all lead, this was my drift around Moscow. You go from one place to another because you don’t have your own place. All the most interesting things happened to me after college. For a long, long time, everything was in some kind of jumps: it seemed that something would more or less settle down, it would seem that it would go back to normal... Even now I’m talking to you, but I’ve only just returned to this rut.

It’s like in Gorokhov’s poem: a dream has come true, and everything is so cool, so cool, and then terrible.
And now what’s terrible, Sasha?
Now there is nothing terrible. But in May-June it seemed to me that life was somehow terribly difficult and unfair. Like a phoenix bird: it burns completely, what are the motivations for further existence? I didn’t have any motivation, everything happened just like that, by inertia: you feel good for a while, and then you feel terribly bad, and you don’t understand why.
But you have such powerful support, nourishment - I mean family. Wife, child...
Yes, everything is fine, but you see... Everyone is trying to support, but I feel like at times I have some kind of exacerbation, when you can’t control yourself. It’s just generally bad, bad. And I left home in May... I want to be alone, but this is also against the family, you know? It is very difficult to be alone in such conditions. And when it all comes to a certain point, you quarrel.
And where did you go?
I rented an apartment. And then I realized that this was not a solution at all, and I couldn’t stay there for long. I don’t need this kind of loneliness, I need everyone to be nearby, and at the same time I would be alone.
Well, of course, public loneliness. And how long did you last in this rented apartment?
Yes for a week. I wanted to try to live like this, but I couldn’t do anything serious under these conditions.
And you weren’t drawn to your child, to your wife?
Of course, I was drawn to it. It is at this moment that you realize how destructive emptiness is.
Perhaps, Sasha, this is also a midlife crisis.
Probably yes, that’s what it’s all called. It’s not that there’s a real crisis, but depression occurs periodically. I’ll tell you honestly, I had this condition even before entering GITIS: you could hang yourself, it’s a terrible state, you feel like you’re completely burned out. I then came to Moscow from Tambov. The admission was also so adventurous. These trains, the conductors...
Explain.
Well, I was late for some trains, jumped into the last carriage and drove from Moscow back to Tambov to take a state exam in philosophy or something else (I studied there at the university in the directing and theater department). I went to Tambov in between entrance exams at GITIS. I remember once I was very detained at GITIS. The last train was leaving, so I ran from GITIS to Paveletsky Station in 15 minutes. I run out onto the platform - the train is stopped. I bent down to catch my breath, and I saw that he was driving! I run and run, and from the last carriage the conductor shouts: “Do you have any money?” I told her: “Yes, 120 rubles.” And she told me: “Jump!” And this happened every time. Admission is like this: you apply and don’t know whether they will take you or not, but you do everything for this. It was not even an admission, but some kind of new round of life. Life has changed: you suddenly left your comfort zone, although, in fact, it never existed, this comfort zone, but you have already found yourself in a completely different reality.
You were born in Volgograd, how did you end up in Tambov?
I went to Tambov because it was the only place where there was admission to the theater course. In Volgograd, I didn’t get into the theater school; I also entered there, but I was quickly rejected in the entrance exams. I was worried then, I drank valerian, although nothing helped me. This was actually my first attempt to enter some theater university.
You grew up in Volgograd, your father was involved in such a romantic activity - he went sailing, was a captain. Didn't this story appeal to you?
I’ll tell you honestly, Vadim, I wanted to travel, I read adventure literature, nothing else attracted me, I didn’t think about acting as a child, because I didn’t know that such a profession existed. Well, then it turned out the way it happened.
Tell me, adventure lover, what provoked your crisis on the eve of entering GITIS?
I finished my studies at Tambov University, so what? I didn't become a director, I didn't become an actor. I had a diploma in teaching: during my studies, there was a reorganization at the faculty. But this is absolutely not my thing, just like directing - I cannot explain to people what to do.

Would you like to go to Moscow to enroll earlier, bypassing Tambov?
I wanted to, of course, but then I simply couldn’t imagine myself in Moscow. Moscow was some kind of myth for me. This city is an absolute Olympus, it is so inaccessible. In Tambov, many authoritative people told me: “Sanya, aren’t you going to Moscow?” And I doubted everything. And an unpleasant thing happened in my fourth year: my neighbor in the dorm had an accident. He drank, then left, leaving the room in simply a terrible state, and the room was assigned to me. The hostel commandant thought that I did it all, but I didn’t make excuses, and there was a scandal.
I assume that you were kicked out of the dorm and you left with your head held high. So?
Approximately. And the most interesting thing began: fifth year, wandering... I could only afford very strange places to live. There was no money, there was none even in the future. I found an apartment where a grandmother lived with her grandson. My grandmother was a cleaner at a grocery store, and she offered me a job there. For three hundred rubles a month I worked as a janitor, watchman, and loader all rolled into one, every other day or two. I practically didn’t go to college. I already had little understanding of what was coming next, and this was stressing me out. One hundred and twenty rubles out of these three hundred paid for housing, lived in the same room with her grandson...
Again everything is hopeless. I know that your life has changed dramatically after Mark Zakharov’s final year students from GITIS arrived in Tambov.
Yes. In the middle of winter, the Zakharovites arrived and we met with them. Misha Pokrass, Arina Marakulina, Vlad Galkov... They inspired me, told me some amazing words that I had never heard from anyone before.
Did the guys see you in graduation performances?
No, they saw me when we showed them some skit. And so they came up and asked if I wanted to try out for them: Mark Zakharov was recruiting a new workshop. And I couldn’t even dream about it! And then I decided to go to Moscow. I suddenly wanted to fit into Moscow, just fit in. In general, this is my principle even on the set: I don’t prepare, I can’t prepare for something. Everything you come up with in your head is good, it’s your internal work, but on the set everything is unpredictable and you just fit into a fight, like putting out a fire, you throw yourself headlong - that’s the only way you can work. You have to do everything desperately, this actually gives you strength. Recently we were filming in a cemetery, and I spent almost the entire shift lying in a coffin.
By the way, I starred with Sasha Molochnikov in the film “Myths,” which will be released in November. So Sasha asked me if I would agree to lie in a coffin in one scene. I refused. Because of superstition.
But I’m not superstitious, I don’t believe in any acting signs. The only salvation is to do your job desperately and selflessly, so if you’ve already climbed in, lie down. And there, in a coffin, I was lying with another beautiful artist, Alla, she played a teacher who dies in the first episode. And so our first episode begins with a tragic event. We also had a cactus and a bottle of cognac there. This is a farce.

Another fact from your biography. You didn’t graduate from GITIS. I think you were expelled for fighting, right?
Well, yes. There was a situation there, I don’t want to comment on it. Perhaps I myself was wrong, but one person’s reaction did not seem very masculine to me.

No. It was a teacher; he taught Yulia Peresild’s course.

Zakharov means a lot to me, he’s great, and in that situation I also think that everything turned out right. If it were different, then my life would have turned out differently. Zakharov finished me off in that situation, to be honest, he kicked me out of the institute. Yes, and I did the right thing.

Yes, I had a reset then, I had to start all over again.
Your whole life is so broken, full of zigzags.
I don’t know what to tell you so as not to translate all this into some kind of poetic form. They tell me, Sanya, what are you doing, you have the main roles, everything is fine. But I don’t know how to find this balance within myself, so that it’s fun, so that what you’re doing doesn’t stress you out. So that you can relax when it’s rest, and when it’s work, work.
Your wife is probably a strong woman: not everyone can tolerate you with your endless mental turmoil. For example, I took you back after your summer “tour”.
Yes, I have a wise wife. Although I don't know if she accepted me back, we'll see.
Sasha, is it true that you yourself delivered your wife’s child?
Listen, it was such trash! I promised Marusa to be present at the birth and did not promise anything else. She persuaded me to have a natural birth, to give birth at home, with midwives, in the pool, and not in a maternity hospital under any circumstances. At first I was scared, but then I realized that many of our friends gave birth this way - I just wasn’t interested in this topic. So, on June 10 she was supposed to give birth. And I already had nightmares that I was leaving for filming, that I was on a plane. And Marusya told me: well, you’ll have time, you’ll have time. Apparently she screwed herself up. I arrive on May 24th from filming, two weeks earlier, and on the way home I receive a text message: “My water broke.” I remember this day very well, it was endless. I flew from Murmansk after a night shift, I didn’t manage to sleep - there, in Murmansk, there are polar nights. That is, I am in a completely hellish state. And there was a lot to do: we had to urgently go for sea salt, for a swimming pool, because we have a shower, not a bath. Plus the midwives are stuck in traffic... It's Friday, the traffic jams are huge. And it was already clear that it was impossible to delay further. Then I suddenly switched gears, it seemed to me that everything would be great, I even had a sense of humor. It's six o'clock in the morning. In general, I delivered the baby myself. When the midwives arrived, the son was already lying on Marusya’s chest. Everything worked out for me and I was happy. But the next day I felt sick - some kind of postpartum syndrome.
Incredible story. What does the wife do?
When we met, Marusya was working as a make-up artist. Office romance type. I looked at how many projects she has at the same time, how it all happens. She came for three hours to sleep, and then again for her shift. Well, how is it anyway? And I realized that I didn’t want my loved one to work like that. And at that moment we decided that I earn money, and she takes care of the family and home.

Miroslav is now two years and five months old, such an interesting age. He is very contactable now, he touches everything with his fingers. Marusin's brother, Miroslav's godfather, made him such a slide at his dacha, like a climbing wall! He really likes it, climbing there. But returning to thoughts about old age... With the birth of a child, does this tradition of yours still apply?
Yes, we have been going there every winter for six years now. We probably won’t go this year, but I can’t promise it. While we want to finally get to Thailand, we just want to change direction. India is a place like a dacha near Moscow. You can always go there. But we already know everything there, it’s already boring. The first year we spent three months there. I came and left. And Marusya was there all the time, even while she was pregnant. For the last two years I have been with Miroslav. This year he actually learned to swim and dive there.
