Alexander Samuilovich Shein

Biography

Alexander Samuilovich Shein was born on February 9, 1933 in Moscow into the family of administrator Samuil Abramovich Shein (1893-1958)[1]. Since 1954 he worked as an assistant director at the Moscow Theater. M. N. Ermolova, served at the Mossovet Theater in Moscow.

In 1956-1963 he studied at the directing department of GITIS (course of Yu. A. Zavadsky). In 1961-1962 he was a director in theaters in Tula, Kazan and Moscow.

First work in cinema: 1962 - second director on the film “Hello, Children” (directed by Mark Donskoy) at the M. Gorky Film Studio.

Since 1963 - director at the Mosfilm film studio.

In 1969 he made his debut as a director - “Family Happiness” (short story “Nerves”).

In 1970, he organized and headed the experimental workshop “Sovpolikadr”, where the first Soviet wide-screen multi-screen artistic and journalistic films were created. He has directed more than 20 films based on his scripts. Director of a number of radio and television programs.

He died on February 24, 2020 at the age of 83[2].

Alexander Shein was married twice. His relationship with his first wife did not work out, and, despite the appearance of his son, the family did not become strong. Later, the director had an affair with Nikita Mikhalkov’s eldest daughter, Anna Mikhalkova. Things were heading towards a wedding, but in the end the woman chose to return to her ex-husband Albert Bakov, whom she had divorced a year before.
