How did the new generation film critic Evgeny Bazhenov, aka BadComedian, start? Video blogger biography

Biography

Internet users often joke that some Russian films are made in order to get into the reviews of film critic Yevgeny Bazhenov. Indeed, the videos of a guy with the sarcastic pseudonym Badcomedian (“bad” is “bad”, and the Comedian is Zhenya’s favorite character from the film “Watchmen”) can compete with full-fledged films in terms of plot.

Evgeniy Bazhenov

For example, in a review of the horror film “Dislike” with Maria Wei and Anastasia Akatova, the guy successfully got used to the images of a maniac and a victim. Therefore, it is not surprising that in 2020 the Bedcomedian channel has more than two million subscribers.

Childhood and youth

There is very little information about Zhenya’s childhood and youth. It is known that the future blogger was born on May 24, 1991, in the city of Sterlitamak, which is located in the Republic of Bashkortostan. When the boy was 12 years old, he, along with his parents and older brother, moved to the very heart of Russia, where he graduated from high school. It is also known that from early childhood Evgeniy became addicted to computer games, reading and films by well-known directors.

Evgeny Bazhenov in childhood

Having received a certificate of secondary education, Bazhenov continued to study and his choice fell on the Russian State Trade and Economic University: Zhenya was a student at the Faculty of Commerce and Marketing. Perhaps Badcomedian (the pseudonym of a blogger), who defended his thesis on the topic “Viral Videos,” would have become a successful marketer, but the guy did not work a single day in his specialty.

But Bazhenov decided to try his luck in the journalistic environment. Initially, the young man worked for a whole year as an editor on the Rossiya 24 TV channel, despite his “bad Russian”: Zhenya admitted that he adores literature, but often makes mistakes in his words. Then Evgeniy decided to throw in his lot with video blogging and devote his life to reviews.

Blogosphere

Inspired by foreign bloggers Spoony and Nostalgia Critic, Evgeny Bazhenov began his creative biography on the YouTube video hosting site on March 28, 2011. In his debut video, Evgeniy told viewers about the Indian film “Mahakaal” (1993), which is more reminiscent not of the declared genre of a horror film, but of an absurd comedy with a reference to the classic “Nightmare on Elm Street.”

Author of the BadComedian blog Evgeniy Bazhenov

It is noteworthy that in his first video, Bazhenov did not appear in person, so viewers could be content with only the voice-over of the young man, and in the video, which was released on June 25, 2011 under the title “Nevsky Drift [Da Vinci’s Fast and the Furious],” Evgeniy showed his face.

By the way, actor and director Alexander Nevsky is Evgeny Bazhenov’s favorite object of ridicule. The films “Moscow Heat” (2004), “Treasure Hunters” (2007), “Murder in Vegas” (2010), “Black Rose” (2014) and “Showdown in Manila” (2016) fell into disgrace. According to Badcomedian, Alexander’s films contain plagiarism and cliches from classic action films with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Nevsky himself completely lacks acting talent.

Evgeniy Bazhenov

Next, Evgeny Bazhenov touched on the work of Nikita Dzhigurda, who directed the film “Reluctant Superman, or the Erotic Mutant,” and in 2013, having honed his skills, the guy criticized Nikita Mikhalkov’s directorial skills, releasing a review of the war film “Presentence” (2010) and “Burnt the sun - 2. Citadel" (2011).

“If Tarantino shot his “Inglourious Basterds”, initially showing that he was fooling around, then Mikhalkov shot the domestic version of “Inglorious Basterds” with an absolutely serious expression on his face,” Badkomedian said in the review.

Evgeniy Bazhenov’s channel enjoys unprecedented popularity among Internet users: loyal fans are waiting for new reviews, and many of Zhenya’s expressions have become quotable and have become catchphrases “for important negotiations.” Such fame of the blogger is due not only to merciless and reasoned criticism, but also to the charisma of the young man.

Evgeniy is not deprived of a sense of humor, and his videos are accompanied by “on-topic” clips from famous films. Badcomedian also often transforms into funny characters: a gopnik, a schoolboy, Jesus, a lover of alcoholic beverages, a bandit from the 90s and other heroes who have become local memes.

Images of Evgeny Bazhenov

In addition, Evgeniy has professional editing skills, so, according to fans, the young man could easily work on the set of Hollywood films. Bazhenov’s channel often criticizes the work of directors Zhora Kryzhovnikov, Sarik Andreasyan and the Russian film company Enjoy Movies, which holds the record for the number of reviews of Badcomedian.

But sometimes Zhenya also criticizes foreign films: the young man reviewed “Divergent” by Robert Schwentke, “The Hunger Games” by Gary Ross, “Terminator. Genesis" by Alan Taylor and "Alien. Testament" by Ridley Scott.

On his channel, a tall YouTuber (Bazhenov’s height is 183 cm) expresses dissatisfaction with the work of the Cinema Fund. The guy is indignant because the state cultural institution does not sponsor talented directors (Zhenya often mentions Yuri Bykov and his film “The Fool” (2014), but, according to him, finances mediocre filmmakers.

There is a known case when Bazhenov received a response from Vladimir Medinsky after a review of the film “Hack the Bloggers” (2016) by Roman Karimov and Timur Bekmambetov, where “Internet” stars Maryana Ro, Ivangay and Sasha Spielberg played.

Evgeny Bazhenov at the Vidfest festival

In an interview with the Dozhd TV channel, Evgeniy stated that the film with a budget of 35 million rubles looked like 100 thousand, when in his own review he himself paid only 2,000 rubles for the same computer animation as in the film. It is noteworthy that the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation ordered an investigation into the feasibility of financing the film “Hack the Bloggers.”

In addition, Zhenya entered into an agreement with the entertainment site CarambaTV.ru, where at the same time he hosted the “Heroes of the Internet” program with Maxim Golopolosov, invented the “BadTrip” section and took part in Ilya Naishuller’s film “Hardcore” (2015), playing the fleeting role of a cyborg.

Lawsuit by film company Kinodanz

On June 3, 2020, Evgeny Bazhenov posted a video on his main channel where he talked about the lawsuit that the film company Kinodanz filed against him at the beginning of 2020[51]. The plaintiff stated that in his review of the fantasy film “Beyond Reality,” Bazhenov exceeded the “permissible volume of quoting original material,” and also accused the critic of “damaging his reputation” and sued him for one million rubles[52]. Bazhenov himself called this an attempt to “censor criticism” and said that he was thinking about closing the channel before they did it for him[53]. The blogger drew special attention to the fact that films produced by this company, which were also reviewed, are financed by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation[54].

The public reacted very quickly to the situation. Particularly active subscribers organized a petition on the Change.org website in defense of Bazhenov[55]. Famous people also spoke out in support of the film critic, including those whose work was criticized at various times on the BadComedian channel, among them: producer Alexander Rodnyansky[56], directors Fyodor Bondarchuk[57], Vladimir Bortko[57], Sarik Andreasyan [58], Ksenia Sobchak[59], Tina Kandelaki[60], Garik Kharlamov[61], rapper Basta[62], deputy Vitaly Milonov[63], TV presenter Ivan Urgant[64], journalist Yuri Dud[65], head Roskomnadzor Alexander Zharov[66] and others[67][68][69][70][71].

The Ministry of Culture, commenting on the situation, noted that they welcome “constructive film criticism, which is lacking in our country,” and also “do not support any film companies in legal proceedings”[72]. State Duma deputy from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Valery Rashkin sent a parliamentary request to the Prosecutor General, in which he asked to check the Kinodanz company for compliance with the law when the Ministry of Culture allocated funds to this film company[73].

On June 5, 2020, a representative of Kinodanz stated that the company was ready to reach a settlement agreement with the blogger; the terms of this agreement were not disclosed. Producer Evgeny Melentyev also complained that “the situation was turned to the plane of freedom of speech,” although the lawsuit was a claim for copyright infringement and damages associated with the release of the review, which amounted to much more than one million rubles. It was separately noted that the Ministry of Culture allocated 6 million rubles for the production of the film “Beyond Reality,” which is 5% of the film’s total budget[74]. BadComedian later commented on this statement, calling it a lie, since the film company did not make a single attempt to meet and peacefully discuss controversial issues[75]. Representatives of Kinodanz, in turn, accused the blogger of pressure due to the fact that he made the details of the claim public, and noted that reconciliation is now possible only in the public field[76][77][78]. According to Bazhenov, the disclosure of the details of this conflict and the resonance that arose in this regard will allow “to calmly count on a trial that will not be under pressure, mythical or real”[79].

On June 17, 2020, Bazhenov’s lawyer, Sergei Panchenko, announced that the parties had reached reconciliation. The terms of the agreement are not disclosed; on June 24, 2020, at a court hearing, the settlement agreement will be formalized procedurally[80].

Scandals

According to rumors, Bedkomedian was repeatedly threatened with lawsuits by the film company Enjoy Movies, director Maxim Voronkov and actor Mikhail Galustyan, who on his Twitter spoke unflatteringly about Bazhenov’s works and stated that Zhenya “insults individuals, violates copyrights and expresses unconstructive criticism.”

Alexander Nevsky, in turn, spoke of the guy as a “mediocre hater,” and according to Bazhenov, a friend of one of the directors called him on his mobile phone, threatening him with physical harm.

Evgeniy Bazhenov (Badcomedian)

Ultimately, at the request of the owners, some reviews that used scenes from films that violated the copyright of the creators were deleted, as a result of which Badcomedian created a new channel “BadNotDead”, where he re-uploaded the blocked videos.

But there are cases when media people spoke positively about Bazhenov’s work. His reviews with his own participation were praised by Basta and Alexey Vorobyov, and publicist Dmitry Puchkov noted that Bedcomedian has surprisingly deep views on life for his age.

Filmography and dubbing

In addition to the YouTube channel, BadComedian starred in several famous films, such as:

  • 2015 - “Hardcore”;
  • 2016 - “Friday”.

But a better known fact is that Bazhenov gave his voice to certain characters from the following films:

  • 2012 - “Ninja in Action”;
  • 2014 - “I wish I was here”;
  • 2014 - “Tusk”;
  • 2016 - “Complete sausage.”

The career of the young comedian and blogger is at the peak of popularity, and you can be sure that dozens more reviews will delight our quiet evenings.

Personal life

In life, Evgeniy is a cheerful guy, accustomed to delighting his subscribers with sparkling humor. For example, when Bedcomedian gave an interview to the Dozhd TV channel, the journalist who introduced Bazhenov to the audience accidentally made a mistake in the blogger’s last name. Thus, a new character has been added to the heroes that the film critic loves to impersonate: journalist Evgeniy Batikov.

Evgeny Bazhenov and Evgeny Batikov

It is worth saying that Zhenya is open to communication. He often answers questions from subscribers in his group on VKontakte and on the official page on Instagram. As for amorous relationships, Bedcomedian does not like to advertise this information, but fans of the blogger suspected that the film critic was dating his colleague Katya Klap.
