Childhood and youth

Actor Nikolai Ivanov, whose photo can be seen in our material, was born on March 6, 1980 in the city of Temirtau, Kazakhstan. Later the family moved even further north - to Noyabrsk. It was here, in harsh winter conditions, that our hero spent a significant part of his childhood.

When the future actor Nikolai Ivanov reached the age of 10, the head of the family decided that he needed to move to a place with a more favorable climate. The guy’s new home was a small village in the suburbs of Penza. Here the young man fully experienced what work was. Nikolai had to herd cows, collect firewood, and plow the field. As you might guess, the family was poor. They had to survive at the expense of the garden and livestock. In such an atmosphere the 90s began for the guy.

After graduating from school, Nikolai went to the nearest regional center of Nizhnelomovsk, where he became a student at a pedagogical school. Nikolai Ivanov: Let's host an evening for those over 70!

Tomorrow the wonderful St. Petersburg actor will celebrate his 70th birthday

At the Bryantsev Youth Theater, Nikolai Ivanov’s creative career began with the role of Ivan the Fool in the fairy tale “The Little Humpbacked Horse.” In total, over the years of work in the theater he played more than 100 roles! And the actor’s role as Ivan Savelyev in the television film “Eternal Call” brought him popularity and love from television viewers.

January 22 at the Youth Theater - creative evening of the actor

— Nikolai Nikolaevich, how are you going to celebrate the anniversary? — On stage! On January 22, there will be my creative evening at the Youth Theater. We will show excerpts from performances that are very dear to me - “The Little Prince”, “Ondine”, “Boris Godunov”, I will read poetry and tell you something. And of course, there will be congratulations - it’s not a matter for an artist to show off more than others on his birthday! (laughs). There will be many guests, even my classmates will come along with our beloved class teacher Elena Aleksandrovna Antonovich. I studied at school No. 235 named after. Shostakovich, and we had a very friendly class, we still keep in touch. We are the same age, and for all of us, 2013 is an anniversary year. We even decided that when the last of our graduating class turns 70, we will host an over 70s night! (laughs).

— You probably celebrated birthdays with your classmates as a child? — No, we had a huge family, and birthdays were always a home holiday. You know what's interesting? January 22 is the day of Bloody Sunday according to the new style, and the day before, January 21, was the day of Lenin’s death. These two days there were always mourning flags hanging on the street, and I was very proud that mourning flags were hanging on my birthday (laughs). True, I once had an unhappy birthday. It so happened that when I turned 10 years old, I was supposed to be accepted as a pioneer. Our class teacher asked us to bring ties in advance, but only the three of us complied with her request. The teacher took our ironed silk ties and locked them in her closet. And on January 22, she became seriously ill and was unable to go to work. The pioneer leader, having learned that we don’t have ties, said: “That means we won’t accept you today!”... And just imagine, a ceremonial line, a drum, a bugle, our classmates are being accepted as pioneers, and we, three fools, are sitting in the classroom and we're crying...

— You have worked in the Youth Theater all your life, what does this theater mean to you? — This is almost 53 years of my life. In 1960, I entered the Studio at the Youth Theater, and already from the 1st year I played on the theater stage. When Zinovy Yakovlevich Korogodsky headed the Youth Theater in 1962, it became one of the most powerful theaters in the city. 25 years with Zinovy Yakovlevich is the “golden age” of the Youth Theater, an exciting time... In general, our theater is always in search of new dramaturgy, theatrical language and how to captivate the modern young audience with performances and penetrate their soul. Today I have great pleasure in playing in Alexander Kuzin’s plays “Treasure Island” and “Mad Money”. It was very interesting to work with Boris Pavlovich on the play “Tityus the Impeccable”.

— Are modern youth interested in theater? — Judging by the fact that there are always a lot of young people in the hall, it’s interesting. But, of course, it is now difficult for theater to compete with cinema. I recently watched the film “The Hobbit” by Peter Jackson - out of professional interest, since I myself played Gandalf in the play “The Ballad of Glorious Bilbo Baggins”. I was so excited about the film! Of course, the theater cannot compete with such a fantasy film spectacle; it must offer something of its own, unique.

— Which films do you remember most about filming? — I was very lucky - it was my first time starring in a movie with the great director Mikhail Kalatozov in the film “The Red Tent.” Then there was a meeting with the outstanding director Leon Saakov - I played in his film “Sea on Fire” about the defense of Sevastopol. But this picture had a tragic fate - Saakov “dug too deep”, and the film first ended up on the shelf and then disappeared! And recently a miracle happened - they called me from Sevastopol and invited me to take part in an action to rescue and restore this film. It turned out that the only surviving copy was found in Sevastopol and they decided to raise money to convert it into digital form and replicate it. And I flew to Sevastopol and took part in this action.

In the role of Vasily Ivanovich in the play “Fathers and Sons”. Nearby - Tatyana Tkach

I also had the chance to work with Sergei Gerasimov - in his film “Loving a Person” I played a doctor. The role of Fyodor Apraksin in Ilya Gurin’s film “Young Russia” is also very dear to me. Ilya Yakovlevich had long dreamed of filming this picture, but he got such an opportunity only after Gerasimov filmed Peter’s Youth. The director of Gorky’s studio said: “Ilya, do you want to make a movie? There are ready-made sets, costumes, even Peter - Dmitry Zolotukhin. But you only have time to do everything about everything—one year.” Despite the limited time, Gurin did absolutely fantastic things. There is one scene where my hero meets with Ryabov - Boris Nevzorov and they have a very serious conversation. But the director failed to bring us together in the frame. That’s why he filmed Nevzorov in Vyborg, and me in Moscow: Boris has the Gulf of Finland behind him, I have a Moscow monastery, and we are talking eye to eye! What about “Eternal Call”? This is 12 years of life and the role of Ivan Savelyev is a happy gift of fate.

— Are you acting in films now? — I just finished filming Oleg Pogodin’s film “Special Powers” (“The Cry of an Owl”). I play a watchman in a hostel, where a group of KGB officers arrive to investigate which of the island's residents collaborated with the Germans during the war. And there, almost the entire city was forced to work for them, because it was impossible to survive otherwise. The watchman constantly conducts nightly conversations about life with the main character Mitin, played by Sergei Puskepalis. And then he burns this German archive... It’s interesting that initially my role was small, but then Pogodin got carried away and wrote a few more scenes for me. And on the last day of filming, he gave us a huge final scene with huge monologues. I didn’t have time to learn it anymore, but the cinematic craftsmen came to the rescue: they made banners with text for me so that I could “spy”!

— I wonder if your children caught the acting virus? — My eldest daughter Ksenia graduated from theater, but then lost interest in this business. She became a journalist and now works as a production editor on a St. Petersburg TV channel. Son Kuzma walked a little on stage during his school years, but did not want to be an actor. Suddenly he became interested in makeup artistry, and now he has a huge clientele and is in great demand. And the youngest Aglaya played with me in the Youth Theater as a child, but already in the 8th grade she firmly decided to study veterinary medicine, and this year her daughter entered the Veterinary Academy.

— They say that over the years the idea of happiness changes.
What does it mean to you to be happy today?— As for the profession, it is, of course, to be in demand. Happiness is not getting sick, being healthy. And so that all the people around me are not offended or upset by me... Interviewed by Elena Fomina, photo provided by the press service of the Youth Theater.

Personal life

Nikolai first fell in love at the age of eight with a girl named Lena (two years older), when he first came to the village of Novy Shustrui during the summer holidays. The girl's father was the director of a local state farm; he was later transferred to the regional center of Nizhny Lomov. For several years the boy was in love with Lena and was very embarrassed by these feelings.

He was constantly silent when she came to the village, watched her from afar, but did not have the courage to speak. Because of his indecision, his love remained unrequited. His love came to naught in 1991, when everything began to fall apart around him and everyone lived their own lives. Kolya never saw Lena again.

During his student years, the artist was very amorous: he loved deeply, with his characteristic youthful maximalism. Nikolai is married. Nikolai met his wife, actress Natalya Valerievna Moteva (born in 1979), while working in the capital’s Youth Theater. At that time, the girl graduated from GITIS, was a star in her course, and also an informal person not only in the profession, but also in life. She preferred creative experiments. She was skeptical of everything traditional.

The young people played together in the theater project directed by Henrietta Yanovskaya “A Taste of Honey” (2003). Gradually, their friendship grew into a romance, which soon ended in the marriage of the actors. Since Nikolai is very careful and respectful of family values, having found his other half, he got married.

The actor fell in love with Elena for her kindness, gentleness and cheerful disposition. He admired her irrepressible ability to directly and sincerely enjoy everything that surrounded her.

Today the couple are raising four children: daughters Pelageya, Aglaya and Dunyasha, as well as son Thomas. The couple are married and have their spiritual father - Dmitry Roshchin. Nikolai is happy in his marriage.
