BIOGRAPHY

Maxim Drozd was born into an acting family.
His father is People's Artist of Ukraine Georgy Drozd, his mother is Lyudmila Kurortnik, she played in the theater. The family moved often, but most of the future actor’s childhood was spent in Kyiv. The boy was seriously involved in boxing and became a master of sports. After school, Maxim decided to become an actor, but did not pass the exams the first time. He was drafted into the army, and for the next two years he served in the Airborne Forces. Then he left for Moscow and entered the Moscow Art Theater School-Studio for the Avangard Leontiev course.

Maxim Drozd began acting in films while still a student, and his first fame came to him in 1992 after the release of the film “Afghan”. Today the actor has more than 80 roles in films and TV series. Among them are “MUR is MUR”, “Adjutants of Love”, “Penal Battalion”, “Liquidation”, “And the Dawns Here Are Quiet”.

Education, theater

After school, Maxim Drozd, whose biography and personal life was of no interest to anyone at that time, went into the army. He had the opportunity to serve in the airborne troops. Having repaid his debt to his native country, the young man set out to conquer Moscow. He managed to enter the Moscow Art Theater School on his first try. He was accepted into the course taught by Avangard Leontiev. Many of the actor’s classmates later became famous, for example, Anastasia Zavorotnyuk, Yegor Pazenko and Dmitry Shcherbina.

The young man received a diploma from the Studio School in 1993. Soon after this, he joined the troupe of the M. Ermolova Theater. Maxim was unable to achieve success in the theatrical field due to being busy on the set. The actor was forced to resign from the M. Ermolova Theater.

CINEMA

Maxim Drozd first appeared in a movie in 1991, and not in an episode, he played a supporting role - a friend of the main character. It was the film “Afghan,” which tells about the difficult fate of an Afghan warrior who fell among the dushmans and experienced all the horrors of captivity.

The directors noticed a young, textured actor with a bright appearance and began inviting him to play the roles of bandits and villains. At one time this role greatly upset Maxim; he tried to carefully choose the best from what was offered.

So, in 2001, he played the bandit Podgaitsev in the crime series “Citizen Chief”, state security captain Fyodor Glukhov in the film “MUR is MUR”, police captain Danila Gulyaev in the TV detective film “Nine Unknowns”.

2007 was a successful year in his career. He took part in the historical detective series “Liquidation”, and was also featured in the foreground in a duet with Evelina Bledans in the crime drama “Cursed Paradise”. Another notable work of that period was the military television series “Saboteur 2: End of War,” where Maxim starred with the famous actor Vladislav Galkin.

The actor was increasingly being invited to lead roles. In 2008, he played five bright characters in the films: “Two Love Stories”, “Cursed Paradise-2”, “Parents’ Day”, “Only Forward”, “I Dream of You...”.

The fame of the brutal actor followed on Maxim’s heels; the list of leading roles in detective stories, crime series and military dramas grew larger every year. About parents:

“My father was a very close person to me. Despite the fact that we lived in different cities for many years, I felt some kind of, one might say, cosmic connection with him. It was my father who, without any violence, managed to instill in me a love of reading. It’s just that somehow, between the 6th and 7th grades, he slipped me the novel “Fathers and Sons,” which for some reason I read with interest. And I began to read adult literature quite early, which later became very useful to me in my profession. But I can’t say that I was such an intelligent teenager. My parents were constantly at work, and I received direct life experience on the street.”

“Mom was a completely secular woman, she loved actor’s gatherings and skits. At some point, I noticed that she began to change: many icons appeared at home, she went to church services more and more often, and began to dress more modestly. And then, overnight, she decided to enter a monastery as a novice. Now my mother says that I lead an unrighteous lifestyle, but I am not offended. I love her even more for this. And I try to help the monastery where she lives whenever possible.”

“When I’m working on a role, I remember a story from my life or from what I read from the classics and make a certain mix. In general, I am an intuitive person, I am a dog. I sense both prey and danger in my gut. I always try to listen to people who are interesting to me, to take a closer look at the artists and directors I like. I absolutely love talented people!”

About the service:

“I believe that every man should undergo military service. Such experience is simply necessary: not enough sleep, not enough food in the name of a serious man’s business. I have great respect for service people who take an oath and then follow their duty, no matter what the cost. No matter how life turns out around them, despite all the injustices, economic and social problems, they are completely loyal to their Motherland. I include in this category of service not only military personnel, but also doctors, clergy - all those who take a vow and remain faithful to it no matter what.”

About love:

“I once read from an old man: “Hell is a place where you cannot love.” If suddenly I become hardened and cannot overcome my own sorrows, then I am already somewhere close to this sad place. Life without love really turns into hell.”

The most brutal actor of Russian cinema spoke for the first time about the secret: the pain of his personal life, ex-wives and the monastery

Maxim Drozd, who played the main roles in the series “Cursed Paradise”, “Liteiny”, “Stanitsa”, “Pseudonym Albanian”, never spoke with anyone about the most secret things. For the first time, the favorite of millions will tear off the mask behind which he hid the pain all his life. Why will the macho man of Russian cinema repent before his three ex-wives? What made him go to the monastery and is he really ready to exchange fame and fans for a modest cell, take a vow of celibacy and become a hermit?

Maxim grew up in an intelligent Kyiv family, his mother and father are actors. However, he earned his first money at the age of 16... as a protection racket.

At first he was against it, but then he agreed,” the actor slyly recalls his youth. — That’s it, I won’t tell you anymore how I made a living, but I was always independent and already at the age of 20 I left for Moscow.

Surprisingly, a teenager with such inclinations devoted himself not to the criminal field, but to acting. Apparently, the genes made themselves felt.

— My mother read Vladimir Bogomolov’s novel “In August 1944” to me, a fourth-grader, and the story “White Fang” by Jack London. Mom instilled a love of reading. My father is a unique person, he never raised his voice to me, thanks to him I became interested in sports and became a boxer.

Maxim Drozd made his film debut at the age of 23 in the leading role in the Ukrainian film “Afghan” in 1991. For many years, his work in cinema did not have overwhelming success with audiences. People's love came to him at the age of 38 after the release of the series “Cursed Paradise” on NTV, where he played Cain, the head of the security service of a brothel, and was passionately in love with the owner of an elite love house, Evelina Bledans. — My main task was to cover my partner’s most piquant places from the cameras during the filming of sex scenes. Perhaps, in my place, many men would have lost their heads over such a lady, but at that time I was passionately in love with another.

In response to our question about the attitude towards prostitution - legalize it or toughen the punishment for prostitutes - he ironically assures:

— I’ll be honest: fortunately, I never resorted to the services of prostitutes (laughs). I haven’t thought about this phenomenon and know little about their craft. In my opinion, this is the oldest profession and, unfortunately, it is hardly possible to eradicate it. I think it’s better to organize it competently, no matter how sad it may sound.

Not long ago, Channel One premiered the series “Stanitsa” about the bloody events in the village of Kushchevskaya in the Krasnodar Territory. The authors of the film were hit with a wave of criticism - they say that local crime bosses Tsapkov were whitewashed, and they were responsible for mass murders and rapes. The main role in "Stanitsa" - the leader of the organized crime group Nikolai Volkov - was played by Maxim Drozd.

— I don’t know anything about criticism, nor about the events in Kushchevka. You know, I am quite familiar with the foundations of the 90s and therefore I was of little interest in the psychotypes of the bandits from this village. Previously, each city had its own Kushchevka. Volkov came up with the image himself: it was prompted by intuition and life experience. My hero fought for his business, to which he and his mother dedicated their lives. I said a sacramental phrase in the film: “You lived in shit, you had nothing to eat, you were beggars, I built you gardens, schools with English, and now you spit in my face.”

Now Maxim Drozd is literally in great demand. The 46-year-old actor already has 73 film credits, mostly leading roles. He recently starred in another remake of the film “The Dawns Here Are Quiet.” Even before its release, many began to condemn the upcoming premiere of Renat Davletyarov’s film: they say, it will not be able to overshadow the success of the Soviet film adaptation of Rostotsky.

— Renat, a brave man, knowing that he would be constantly compared to Rostotsky, still took on this film. I like the existing remakes of Soviet masterpieces - "The Irony of Fate", "Office Romance" - much less. From my youth I remember a close-up of Tikhonov to the music of Tariverdiev, Yankovsky to the melody of Rybnikov, and I will be happy if someone else can touch my soul like that, but alas... You must be able to use the experience of great masters, but you should not copy them.

Despite the wild popularity and love of a good half of the female population of our country, the actor’s personal life is not going well. But he can rightfully be compared with Count Vronsky from Tolstoy’s novel Anna Karenina. Recently, the sex symbol went through a third divorce from actress Victoria Poltarak. Drozd met her in 2009 on the set of the series “Secret Guard. Deadly Games” and almost immediately proposed marriage to the beauty, who is 12 years younger than the actor. No one knew about their breakup and why they decided to go to the registry office for the second time, but this time to file for divorce.

— We divorced in July of this year. We came to this decision mutually, at some point we realized that we could no longer live together, our views changed. I have four children, parents, everyone needs to help, and for this I have to film a lot, constantly be on the road. In this bustle, I gave Vika little love, attention, tenderness. Now I have a girlfriend, it’s too early to talk about a serious relationship, but I’m happy.

Maxim Drozd tied the knot for the first time at the age of 21. First love has not stood the test of time. The second attempt to build personal happiness also failed. But the actor became a father of many children.

— Dasha was born in her first marriage. She is 22 years old, recently graduated from university, and is now a certified psychologist. Lives with his mother in Riga. From my second wife I have two children - Yegor and Masha. My son is 13 years old; he himself decided to enroll in a Moscow theater studio. I haven’t invited you to my performances yet. He watches and criticizes my films, he thinks that I should try myself in the comedy genre and act in humorous sketches on STS or TNT. Egor tries to be independent in everything. He and I have differences about whether it is worth playing sports. Because of this, we began to argue often, I went to a psychologist. The specialist put me in my place and explained that my son does not have to be my copy, there is no need to put pressure, it is better to set an example, which is what I try to do. Daughter Masha is in sixth grade and studies at Sergei Andriyaka’s watercolor academy. She wants to become a fashion designer, and this already shows in her character. I keep trying to dress her in a pink blouse, and she puts on iron-toed boots and a fancy orange headscarf. From my third wife I have Sophie, she is four years old. By the way, I chose the name because I once admired the French actress Sophie Marceau.

Maxim remained on good terms with all his ex-wives and financially helps support all his children.

“I’ll say this about my exes: they were amazing and wonderful women, I’m proud of them and I regret that I didn’t have enough feelings and understanding for a lot of things... Alas. Today I want to repent to them: I was probably to blame for many things myself. I am hot-tempered, a person of mood, I do not allow people into my emotional and intellectual space. And this, as I now understand, is very offensive for women. My woman wanted to go to the theater, but I’m not in the right mood, I’ll tell her: “Go with a friend, I want to be alone at home.” Offended. And sometimes I am sincerely amazed that she has not read Remarque. I can get angry over trifles, but I quickly move away.

-Have you cheated on your wives?

- No, what’s the point of getting married and then going left?!

Drozd does not consider himself a star; he modestly says: “I’m a simple Russian guy.” You won’t meet him at social gatherings, and this is not due to lack of time, but rather because of the desire to while away the evenings in the gym or reading a book. Glamorous socialites do not touch the hearts of macho men. If he fell in love, then with all ardor and without wasting time: “You are mine, period.”

— Relationships that are based on a BMW or Mercedes are not of interest. I don’t give my women diamonds, apartments, cars, I don’t have a car - I’m not an oligarch. But I just don’t like natural furs and fur coats in particular. I like to go shopping, choose beautiful things: evening shoes, coats, etc. By the way, I have the same tastes as the ladies. It’s easy for me in everyday life: I like to manage the kitchen.

Few people know that the sex symbol of Russian cinema became a novice in a Kiev monastery at the age of 30:

— I came there to visit the grave of my spiritual mentor, I thought it would be for a day or two, but I stayed for six months. He washed the floors, swept the yard, did everything the other novices did. The love for the profession and talented people forced me to return to social life. Apparently, the Lord wanted it that way. Lately I understand that I am approaching a departure from worldly foundations. I do not exclude the possibility that in the future I may go to a monastery again.

Maxim’s mother, Kiev theater actress Lyudmila Kurortnik, became a novice 17 years ago. The actor is sure that it is thanks to her prayers that he is so successful in his career, his children are healthy and happy.
