— Priorities do not change, they are updated. As I have acted before, I will continue to act, because I love my profession: I am captivated by both this filming drive and the immediate process of immersing myself in the fate of this or that hero, understanding the psychological, mental characteristics of a person, comprehending meanings. This is a living, deep, fascinating process. At the same time, there is the concept of development and improvement in the profession, the desire to realize some more important goal in life. But a certain impulse must appear, perhaps some kind of hint from fate...
And so it happened: I decided to try myself in directing after I once came across some interesting material - an article telling about a legendary personality, about a man of unique destiny. And this is not a fictional character, but a real, real person who lived a life full of the most incredible adventures. The story of his life deeply shocked me, and at the same time I was surprised: why didn’t I know about him before, why didn’t they talk about him? And what an exciting film it would be! The plot includes epoch-making historical events, is full of adventures in the space of two continents, but most importantly, it opens a long and difficult path to the Truth.
Of course, I’m not the only one who admires the adventures of this hero and the story of his life. But it was that same impulse when your acting vision is transformed into something more - into an awareness of creative intent, dramaturgy. It’s not just that the idea to make a film is born, but the idea begins to be embodied in a specific action.
— Would you like to make this film together with Russian and foreign filmmakers, given that the life and adventures of your Hero connect two continents?
— It would be very interesting to create a joint project! We have observed that recently, for example, Western cinema, and not only Western cinema, is increasingly turning to its own interpretation of Russian literature and history. But it is the joint process that gives completeness, integrity of understanding of the material, and expansion of the worldview. And then, this is, of course, a contribution to the development of relations between different countries in the field of culture and the humanitarian dimension. Moreover, when historical material creates special opportunities for this.
— You filmed together with Polish, Ukrainian, Chinese, Azerbaijani filmmakers. How do you feel about joint film projects? What are the challenges of working on set with representatives of a different culture, and what are the advantages?
— Yes, indeed, I have some experience working with foreign filmmakers: in particular, I starred in Poland in the television project “For Worry and in Joy”, in the 20-episode television series “Gadfly”, filmed jointly with Chinese filmmakers.
He was invited to Azerbaijan to play the role of the President of the Republic, Heydar Aliyev, in the feature film “The Simplest Last Name.”
Also filmed in Ukraine. But since I consider this country, where I lived part of my life, to be my second homeland, after Latvia, I do not regard this experience as foreign.
Of course, working in other countries and creative groups of a different culture and mentality is a tremendous experience. Especially if you have to work in a foreign language environment, as happened on film sets in Poland and Azerbaijan. This experience requires constant honing of one's acting skills. In some ways, similar to tests for freshmen: you are trying to understand and organically react to a partner speaking a language you do not understand. As a result, you constantly check yourself - were you able to convey your thoughts to your partner, to what extent did you use the potential of expressive means?
It was very interesting to work with the Chinese group on the Gadfly project. Naturally, both groups - Russian and Chinese - spoke their own language. We did not understand each other at all; the translators had difficulty saving the situation. But we were so attuned to the material, to the result, that after some time... we began to communicate with the Chinese director without a translator. He spoke in Chinese, I spoke in Russian, but we both understood what we wanted. As a result, the translator was not in demand, which is why he was also offended by us.
It is this valuable experience that suggests that the only obstacle to working in joint groups, and even then a conditional and temporary one, is the language factor. But the creative process is such a powerful spiritual synergy that after a while this barrier is erased. You begin to feel and understand your partners at the level of intuition, intonation, and subconscious.
Personal life
Alexander was married twice. From his first marriage he has a son, Ilya, born in 1998. In 2005, on the set of the series “The Devil from Orly,” Nikitin met actress Nadezhda Bakhtina, star of the television film “Carmelita.” Since their characters get married in the story, the on-screen wedding was played first, and only 2 years later, in 2007, Alexander led Nadezhda down the aisle in real life.
