Killer, psycho and cannibal: who's who in "Suicide Squad"

The film "Suicide Squad" is an action movie about superheroes based on the plots of DC comics. The film's release date in Russia is August 3, 2016. The film was filmed as the starting part of a project generalized by one theme.

For the first time, a comic book about a suicide team consisting of negative characters with superpowers hit bookstore shelves in 1959. The director, David Ayer, created the film adaptation in his characteristic directorial style. There is little computer graphics in the film, the actors perform their own stunts, special effects are implemented using staging capabilities, and the locations are real Toronto exteriors. Each soundtrack sets the pace for the entire action.

The film was preceded by a powerful advertising campaign. Photos of the characters were featured on posters in the most popular places in big cities, and promotional cars were driving around everywhere. Marketing is built on solid and meticulously thought-out images of the characters described by the spectacular trailer.

The plot tells that after the death of Superman, a departmental unit gathers a squad of dangerous criminals to fight the heroine named the Enchantress. Each of them has a chip embedded in their body that can explode if they try to escape. A kind of special forces detachment, which has nothing to lose, makes a deal with the government.

Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn)

The film "Suicide Squad": actress Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn |
kinopoisk.ru Harley Quinn is a psychologist who worked with the Joker and fell in love with him. The girl becomes the villain's companion and leads a riotous lifestyle, indulging the chosen one in planning crimes.

The role of Harley Quinn was played by Margot Robbie, who beat out eminent representatives of Hollywood at the auditions. The Australian actress gained popularity in the early 2010s after her debut in major projects. DC signed a contract with her to play the role of Quinn in other films about the comic book universe. Margot Robbie starred in the films: “The Elephant Princess” (Butterfly), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (Naomi LaPaglia), “Focus” (Jess Barrett), “Tarzan. Legend" (Jane Porter), "I am Tonya" (Tonya).

Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn (in other words, Harlequin) is a relatively young heroine. She made her debut in 1992 in the animated series "Batman" as the crazy girlfriend of the Joker, as the authors wanted to emphasize in every possible way that their Joker was not gay. Harley was so loved by the audience that a year later she was included in comics, but she was not included in the canon right away - she had to wait another six years. For the first time, the secret of the girl’s origin was revealed in the graphic novel “Mad Love” (1994): it turned out that before becoming the Joker’s henchwoman, Harley (more precisely, Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel) was his attending physician at the Arkham mental hospital, but, having fallen under influence of Mr. Jay, went down a slippery slope and rolled down. After the reboot of the DC comics universe, the image of the villainess underwent changes (she became even sexier, although it seemed much more) and joined the Suicide Squad. In one issue, she ties up and tortures her former teammate Deadshot by putting a cut off of the Joker's face on him and imagining that he is Mr. J. For this, the psychopath receives a bullet in the stomach from a sniper - however, not fatal. In Assault on Arkham, Harley is more affectionate: she climbs into Deadshot's bed and seduces him. In the latest film, the heroine was played by Margot Robbie, thus becoming the fourth actress to embody the image of the villain on screen: in the series Birds of Prey, her role was played by Sherilyn Fenn (in the pilot) and Mia Sara (in the remaining episodes), in Arrow - Cassidy Alexa, voiced by Tara Strong.

Will Smith (Deadshot)

The film "Suicide Squad": actor Will Smith as Deadshot |
kinopoisk.ru Deadshot is a hero who has something to live for. A dangerous criminal and a sharp killer is waiting to be released so he can be with his son. He makes a deal to meet a boy.

In the comics, Deadshot is Latino, but the producers could not resist Will Smith's talent and charm. The artist already had experience portraying a superhero on screen in the film Hancock. To work in the new project, he had to train a lot and take lessons from the military. The artist has worked in the following films: “Men in Black” (James Edwards), “Ali” (Muhammad Ali), “Rules of Filming: The Hitch Method” (Alex Hitchens), “I Am Legend” (Robert Neville), “Focus” (Nikki)

Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag)

The film "Suicide Squad": actor Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag |
kinopoisk.ru An experienced fighter who can cope with any vehicles, Rick Flag is the head of the suicide squad on behalf of the government. He is responsible for returning criminals to prison.

The character was portrayed by Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman, although Tom Hardy, Luke Evans and Bradley Cooper were considered for the role. The main work in the artist’s career was RoboCop in the project of the same name. Kinnaman is in demand in cinema. Make sure of this by watching the films: “Easy Money” (Johan Westlund), “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (Christer Malm), “Cape Town Access Code” (Keller), “Knight of Cups” (Errol), “Night Fugitive” (Mike Conlon)

Rock Flag

This colonel was played well by Joel Kinnaman , who is known to the viewer from the films:

  • "RoboCop"
  • "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo",
  • "Easy money",
  • and the television series "The Killing".

To put it simply, this character is the captain of the Suicide Squad , who at first has no authority. Despite this, his rich combat experience helps control the gang. Although in fact, a significant role was played by the explosives sewn under the skin of each member of the suicide squad (except Katana), and with the control panel at Rock Flag.

Before the film was shown in theaters, many thought that this character was unlikely to survive until the middle of the film. However, in fact, not only did he not become boring due to calls for discipline, but he was also the source of a number of worthwhile jokes. Their importance should not be underestimated.

Viola Davis (Amanda Waller)

The film "Suicide Squad": actress Viola Davis as Amanda Waller |
kinopoisk.ru Amanda Waller is the stern and confident leader of the operation to destroy the Enchantress. She assembles a team of thugs to get rid of the fiend.

There was serious competition for the role of Amanda Waller. The competitors were Oprah Winfrey and Octavia Spencer, talented black actresses. The role went to Golden Globe, Emmy and Oscar winner Viola Davis. The artist creates on-screen characters in television projects and films. She has work in iconic films behind her. You can evaluate the acting talent of Viola Davis in the films: “Solaris” (Gordon), “Eat, Pray, Love” (Delia), “The Help” (Aibileen Clark), “Ender’s Game” (Gwen Anderson), “Fences” (Rose Maxson ).

Suicide Squad / "Suicide Squad"

The third film in the DC extended universe, Suicide Squad, attracted attention long before its premiere; this picture is too different from the superhero movies we are used to. Amazingly aggressive marketing and unusual visual imagery used in promotional materials also contributed to the excitement. Well, let's find out if Suicide Squad managed to shake the foundations of the genre.

Genre comics Director David Ayer Starring Will Smith (Floyd Lawton / Deadshot), Jared Leto (Joker), Margot Robbie (Dr. Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Jai Courtney ( Digger Harkness / Captain Boomerang), Cara Delevingne (June Moon / Witch), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Waylon Jones / Killer Croc), Scott Eastwood (Lt. GQ Edwards), Karen Fukuhara (Tatsu Yamashiro / Katana), Jay Hernandez (Chato Santana / El Diablo), Ben Affleck (Bruce Wayne / Batman), etc. DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Pictures Year 2016 IMDb, KinoPoisk

Don't assume that it was Deadpool who opened Pandora's box and now we are waiting for a series of superhero films about bad guys. In fact, comics about antiheroes have been coming out for a long time; the first version of the same “Team X” or Suicide Squad appeared back in 1959 in The Brave and the Bold #25. The second team assembled in Legends #3 in 1987. The film is based on an updated version of the Suicide Squad comic, a reboot of The New 52 that ran from 2011-14. In 2014, an even more recent version was launched - New Suicide Squad, in which the composition of the squad was seriously changed.

However, the film does not entirely correspond to The New 52 comics; some characters in the film have been replaced. The producers did not dare to release King Shark on the big screen; if this hero appeared, the film would definitely receive an Adults Only rating, which would significantly limit its audience. Replacing King Shark with Killer Croc, who was never in the original Suicide Squad, allowed for a fairly decent PG-13. But all this is trivial, let's get back to the film itself.

So, as you probably understood from the trailers, Agent Amanda Waller, concerned about the emergence of superhumans, assembles a team of supervillains serving life sentences to oppose them to an even greater evil that could threaten the Earth. "Team X" or "Suicide Squad" operates under duress and does not disdain any means to achieve the goal. If they fail or are discovered, the agents are simply destroyed and the government abandons them.

It must be said that Waller has assembled a team of unusually charismatic scoundrels. Each of them is a non-trivial character with their own secrets, motivation, and interesting story behind them. But DC, as you know, acts as a catch-up and, as in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, is forced to present its heroes in fast forward. Here Deadshot is performing one of his tasks, and now he is being arrested. Within three minutes, Dr. Harleen Quinzel meets the Joker, falls in love with him, and becomes Harley Quinn.

Not all the iconic scenes and memorable images from the comic are present here, but the sense of urgency is still there. It is obvious that each of these heroes deserves a separate film with the Origin prefix, a thorough and detailed story, savoring the smallest details of the biography. But, unfortunately, there is no time for this - each character receives a two-three-minute presentation clip, in the most literal sense of the word. Some, like Harley Quinn, are larger, while others, like Killer Croc and Captain Boomerang, are even smaller. However, in these compressed representations of the members of the Suicide Squad, characters from past and future DC Extended Universe films flash - Batman, Flash, etc. This is nice.

Due to the clip structure of the narrative with distractions of flashbacks and personal stories of the characters, the film seems a little chaotic and torn. Something similar happened in X-Men: Apocalypse and Captain America: Civil War. This is a common problem with movies with a lot of superheroes/villains in the frame. Everyone doesn't get as much screen time as they would like. What to do. Although Harley Quinn seems to have already earned a personal or almost personal movie, let's hope that the other members of the Suicide Squad will be lucky.

Moreover, some of them clearly deserve it. There’s nothing to say about Harley Quinn, it seems Margot Robbie has found the role of her life and is simply reveling in it. She fell in love with her image so much that she will not only play in the next films in the series, but also produce them. Will Smith was also perfect for the role of Deadshot, although in the comics sniper Floyd Lawton looks and behaves, to put it mildly, completely differently, but Smith’s interpretation of the image has every right to exist. Jai Courtney's character is absolutely spot on; his Captain Boomerang looks like he stepped out of the pages of a Suicide Squad comic book. But El Diablo performed by Jay Hernandez, although similar to his prototype, is still a little lacking in madness and religious fanaticism. And yet, it’s completely unclear why they didn’t implement the feature with El Diablo tattoos. Cara Delevingne is very good in the image of June Moon / The Witch, especially the Witch, she turned out to be an excellent character, multi-faceted, so to speak. But Viola Davis is a controversial choice for the role of Amanda Waller, firstly, Waller in the comics is still much younger, and secondly, she is, of course, a rare bitch, but not the materialized evil that she is in the film. However, this is even more interesting.

The image of the Joker created by Jared Leto caused a lot of controversy. Critics compare it to Heath Ledger's work in The Dark Knight, which has become legendary, also due to the actor's death. Well, these are completely different Jokers. But in the corresponding comics this character is depicted completely differently. And Jared Leto's image is just closer to the original Suicide Squad comic. It's not a 100% hit, but close enough. In addition, the actor still has the right to his own vision. In any case, Leto’s Joker turned out to be very charismatic and memorable.

I would also like to say something about the picture. Although Suicide Squad is made in the traditional dark vein for DC Entertainment and Warner Bros, this time the companies are not shy about experimenting with color framing, filters and neon. It looks very interesting. The scenes with the Joker and Harley Quinn are actually some kind of holiday.

The action is also perceived very positively, there is enough of it here, it is shown with gusto, no shaky camera or ragged editing, DC knows how to stage fights and shootouts. Plus, the company traditionally uses scale. If you fight, then with the Gods, if you destroy, then the planet. We don't subscribe to anything less here.

Unfortunately, Suicide Squad doesn't shake the foundations. This is not Deadpool with a large number of heroes, unconventional humor and flirting with the viewer. In general, this is an almost traditional movie based on a comic book, built according to a proven scheme: introduction of heroes, gathering of a squad, the first test, the final battle, a hint of a sequel. But, thanks to the very bright and unusual characters, the picture still stands out from the background of Marvel's works. The film looks good and leaves a pleasant aftertaste. Personally, I will be looking forward to both new films in the DC Extended Universe, and specifically Suicide Squad 2 (November 1, 2020) and Harley Quinn's solo film, the release date of which has not yet been announced.

And next in line is another DC film with a strong female lead and a stunningly beautiful actress – Wonder Woman. It's a pity, we'll have to wait another 10 months for its release.

PS Competition is always good, we said it.

ITC.UA rating

Pros: Charismatic villains; good actors; atmosphere of madness; stylish picture; Harley Quinn

Cons: Some chaos in the narrative; Not all characters get enough screen time

Conclusion: A brilliant supervillain movie with unusually charming characters

Cara Delevingne (June Moon, Enchantress)

The film “Suicide Squad”: actress Cara Delevingne as the Enchantress |
kinopoisk.ru The Enchantress is an imperious and powerful character who awakens from a centuries-old sleep so that evil reigns in the world.

Cara Delevingne originally auditioned for the role of Harley Quinn, but she got an equally interesting role. The British model and actress starred in several films, creating images of heroines with a bright temperament. Evaluate the creative potential of the performer in the films: “Anna Karenina” (Princess Sorokina), “The Face of an Angel” (Melanie), “Paper Towns” (Margot Roth Spiegelman), “Children in Love” (Viola), “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” ( Laureline).

Amanda Waller

This American iron lady was played by Viola Davis , winner of an Oscar and an Emmy Award and even a Golden Globe nomination. The character she got was not a pleasant one, because Amanda Waller is cruel and calculating. Who would think of gathering motley villains for an obviously failed mission? Exactly for her! And the powers of such a “lady” have become a match for her, since she occupies a high position in a militarized state organization. According to the plot, Amanda's plans will not succeed. Apart from the Enchantress, this is the main antagonist of the film.

Jared Leto (Joker)

The film "Suicide Squad": actor Jared Leto as the Joker |
kinopoisk.ru A sophisticated villain, a psychopath and an antisocial personality, the Joker is not part of the suicide squad, but turns out to be the main figure in the action. He is a cunning master of torture, a skilled marksman and a toxin specialist.

Jared Leto had to face a serious wave of criticism when his work was compared to the characters of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger. The actor created an image different from those that were previously presented to the viewer. The Joker's personality and wildness come to the fore, proving that Leto is not only a talented singer, but also a gifted actor. Check out the work of an artist prone to unexpected transformations in the projects: “American Psycho” (Paul Allen), “Requiem for a Dream” (Garry Goldfarb), “Alexander” (Hephaestion), “Mr. Nobody” (Nemo), “Dallas Buyers Club” "(Rayon), "Blade Runner 2049" (Wallace).

Floyd "Deadshot" Lawton

What he can do: shoot without missing

In the comics, Lawton had a difficult childhood due to a sadistic father who abused the entire family. One day, Lawton decided to end his life, but he aimed poorly and killed his brother. From then on, he vowed never to miss. Deadshot is one of the main old-timers of the Suicide Squad and the informal leader of the squad. Among the crowd of psychos and cannibals, he looks the most sober and collected. At the same time, he is perhaps the most desperate “suicide” - Lawton does not expect early release from working in the detachment, he is looking for a beautiful death.

In the first teaser from Comic-Con, Deadshot appeared with a girl, likely his daughter. Apparently, in “Suicide Squad” he will not become a killer out of a good life either. In subsequent videos, we see Deadshot arguing with the formal commander of the squad, Rick Flag.

Jay Hernandez (El Diablo)

The film "Suicide Squad": actor Jay Hernandez as El Diablo |
kinopoisk.ru The philosophically minded El Diablo knows how to control fire. He is the only member of the Suicide Squad who tries to resolve issues humanely and uses his superpower in extreme cases.

The filmography of the Latin American artist speaks of him as a universal actor, capable of creating images of heroes in projects of different genres. He equally naturally plays the role of hero-lovers, brave military men, cunning bandits and comic characters. You can see the work of Jay Hernandez in the films: “Hostel” (Paxton), “Twin Towers” (Dominique), “Nomad” (Eraly), “Boy Raiders” (Eddie Hatcher), “Bad Moms” (Jessie).

Karen Fukuhara (Katana)

The film "Suicide Squad": actress Karen Fukuhara as Katana |
kinopoisk.ru Katana is a positive character in the squad of thugs. She is fluent in the samurai sword and the ability to steal souls. Katana volunteers to be Rick Flag's bodyguard.

Participation in the Suicide Squad project was Karen Fukuhara's debut on the big screen. The actress of Japanese origin created a memorable and organic image that exists apart from other characters in the film.

THE ENCHANCER (CARA DELEVINGNE)

June Moon is a girl suffering from schizophrenia, and both of her personalities are dominant. She can be both a heroine and a villain, but these personalities can change completely unexpectedly. She was once an artist, but one day, at a strange private party, she wanders into a distant room, where she encounters a mysterious creature who has endowed her with a magical gift. These powers are given to her to fight evil, but June herself cannot always really direct them in the right direction. The designs of the eccentric Enchantress costumes, which actress and model Cara Delevingne will wear in the film, were inspired by historical events in North America. It is also known that this character will be the love interest of Rick Flag.

Cara Delevingne as the Enchantress

Jai Courtney (Digger Harkness)

The film "Suicide Squad": actor Jai Courtney as Digger Harkness |
kinopoisk.ru The abilities of Captain Boomerang, Digger Harkness, are justified by the name. The members of the squad do not perceive this “colleague” as a capable fighter and reliable comrade. A racist, a coward and a vicious deceiver, he is not credible.

Jai Courtney was the only candidate for this role. The actor's career consists of a variety of positive and negative images. He participated in science fiction projects, so he was ready to work on Suicide Squad. You can see Jai Courtney in the films: “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” (Varro), “Jack Reacher” (Charlie), “I, Frankenstein” (Gideon), “Divergent” (Eric), “Terminator Genisys” (Kyle Reese ).

Captain Boomerang - Jai Courtney

Jai Courtney's character's nickname says it all. George "Digger" Harkness has the ability to generate energy, allowing the mercenary to make boomerangs. However, it is unknown whether the Suicide Squad movie will show this. The characters and actors of the upcoming premiere (we expect it, by the way, in early August, on the fifth) look very different - some are completely unrecognizable, but this does not apply to Courtney (at least his face is open).

Captain Boomerang is a sarcastic person, which becomes a stumbling block when communicating with Deadshot and the Wall.
