The casting of Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto as the Joker in the upcoming film Suicide Squad came as a surprise to many. However, given his transformation in Dallas Buyers Club, it's hard to criticize him.
From the moment fate decided to make Leto the new Joker, the actor threw himself into the role, but in an even more intense and slightly shocking way than expected.
Like Heath Ledger, Jared allowed himself to become the Joker, going through many bizarre rituals before filming began. All of this indicates that the actor and frontman deliver the definitive Joker look, regardless of some controversial cosmetic changes.
But there are also some strange, disturbing and intriguing facts about Jared Leto since Suicide Squad began filming.
Brace yourself, people, Summer is coming Editorial Material
Ayer timed the publication of the photo of the actor in makeup to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the cult character. The Joker first appeared in the very first issue of Batman Comics, published by DC on April 25, 1940.
Suicide Squad will be about a gang of villains who are put into custody but used by the government to carry out covert operations. In addition to Leto, the film will also feature actors Will Smith (who will play Deadshot), and, probably, Ben Affleck (Batman) in a cameo from the film “Batman v Superman,” which will premiere in Russia on March 25, 2020.
The new image of the Joker (who is the hero of another universe in which, for example, the Man of Steel exists) differs significantly from the appearance of the villain from the Dark Knight trilogy, directed by Christopher Nolan. There, the role of the Joker was played by Heath Ledger, who died from an overdose of painkillers on January 22, 2008.
Social network users expressed surprise at the unexpected change in the image of the popular character and offered their own options and associations. For example, his grin was compared to the hero of the comedy Home Alone, and his tattoos were compared to review headlines.

Joker + Harley = ? Review of the film "Suicide Squad"
On " Suicide Squad"
“Initially we had high hopes (especially with such and such an advertising campaign). And now many critics write that expectations were not met. But let's first figure out what we were really waiting for.
Cool action? More than half of the film consists of action. Complex team relationships between supervillains who are not used to working as a team? So, naturally, they quarrel throughout the entire film and learn to work as a team (it turns out badly). Lots of crazy and sexy Harley Quinn? She is definitely the star in the squad. Jared Leto's great performance as the Joker? It's there. Lots of humor? Lots of humor, please.
So where are the unmet expectations? On the contrary, the movie fully lives up to expectations, but the problems here are completely different.
In the background of " Man of Steel"
" and "
Batman v Superman
" the movie seems strange and does not seem to fit into the general concept of the DC cinematic universe. There is no gloss inherent in all the latest films of the company, no perfectly calibrated shots and pathos, and even the music is mostly familiar themes like Without Me by Eminem, without the sterile works of Zimmer.
Let's admit it: the most independent work in the new cinematic universe was “Man of Steel”: completely self-sufficient, even with almost no fan service. Batman v Superman was a completely different story - comic book fans went crazy, and the rest left the movie with a languid shrug. Suicide Squad falls somewhere in between. Yes, there are plenty of things here that only fans will appreciate. However, fan service remains fan service and does not interfere with the narrative - so this is perhaps the golden mean.
► Dream team, huh?
However, at the same time, “Suicide Squad” follows the canon: if you have read at least a couple of story arcs of the comic, then from the first minutes you will recognize the spirit of the original. Progressive-minded lady Amanda Waller proposes a dubious adventure to the government: gather supervillains into one squad and implant microbombs in their necks. The task of the detachment is to carry out the dirtiest and darkest orders of the government, which the government itself does not want to have anything to do with. If something goes wrong, you can just blow everyone's minds, and voila - the hands of America's managers are pristinely clean.
► In the DC Comics universe, not all villains are truly villains. Someone is a mercenary, someone is an ordinary thief, someone is just crazy. And everyone can be understood. Except for the Joker, of course. This is truly true evil, and only Batman understands it.
The villains in the squad, however, don’t really want to do dirty work for the government, and even as a team. And this is the main problem of the film: instead of sending the squad on a secret government mission, Amanda Waller leaves them to do “Superman’s job” - saving the world from an ancient evil. What Batman and Wonder Woman and the rest of the heroes of the as-yet-defunct Justice League are doing at this time is a big question.
They also missed the mark with the main villain. This seems to be the fashion: to arrange a battle at the end with a huge pile of garbage (Deadshot even managed to joke about this) and special effects. Why not start a government conspiracy? Or, at worst, take one of Batman’s enemies for the role of villains, as in the magnificent cartoon “ Batman: Assault on Arkham”
»?
► Here is the deleted scene. Why was she removed from the film? Looks like another strange decision.
It's also obvious that Suicide Squad is a victim of poor editing, like Batman v Superman. This is also indicated by the ragged narration in places, which is why the movie periodically seems chaotic, and, for example, the scene with the burnt Joker: it was in the trailer, but disappeared from the film. But at least here the storylines don't go nowhere like they did with Lois Lane's investigation in the theatrical version of Batman v Superman.
You notice all these disadvantages while watching, but generally ignore them. Because, my God, what a Harley Quinn this is.
! What amazing humor, what heroes! What a Joker, finally!
What is very important is that the humor here is purely situational. It fits seamlessly into both the action and dialogue. There is no emphasis on it, as Marvel likes to do: here we have a joke about Thor’s hammer in the elevator, we came up with it separately, laugh now. No one is going to pause theatrically long enough for you to laugh at how “ Flag got dragged away again.”
"(although you will remember the joke for a long time). All the jokes seem to be made up on the fly.
► Rick Flag doesn't have a bomb in his neck, but he finds himself in the same desperate situation as supervillains. Amanda Waller is a master manipulator, as all comic book fans know.
Thanks to this, “Suicide Squad” is not perceived as a comedy, although there are plenty of comic situations there. Katana, for example, was given almost no screen time, but she was presented as something incomprehensible from Japan and wearing a mask, which seemed to be supposed to help. He runs around, slashes at enemies with the Soul Eater and periodically shouts something pathetically in Japanese. Croc keeps a serious face throughout the film and pretends to be a cruel beast with whom it is better not to joke, and then at the most crucial moment, backwards up (in sweatpants!), he dives absurdly, like a crocodile, into the water, plunging the entire audience into laughter. And only Captain Boomerang really jokes for the sake of joking, but it suits him, he’s such an Australian troll.
Of course, Harley Quinn deserves special attention. God, she's really crazy! And not in the way that usually happens in comedies about funny crazy people: Harley’s logic is difficult to read, but at the same time, she herself, apparently, is in absolute harmony with herself.
► The careful design of the characters’ appearance deserves special attention. All the inscriptions, all the jewelry, all the tattoos mean something.
Moreover, the girl is driven by feelings that are completely understandable to everyone: love, care, and sometimes even friendship. She is deliberately childish, but at the same time she is fair and honest both with herself and with others. And yes, she has a simply gorgeous figure, emphasized by a perfectly tailored and extremely sexy outfit. It's hard to resist feeling sympathy for her, regardless of your gender.
Absolutely all the characters behave exactly the same as in the comics. El Diablo is depressed and tries to control himself, Captain Boomerang choke down his beer and egg on his party members, Killer Croc growls and looks angrily at everyone, Deadshot is just doing another job to see his daughter - absolute canon.
► El Diablo - a character, frankly speaking, not the most popular - suddenly reveals an unexpected, tragic side.
Many people complain about Jared Leto as the Joker and that there isn't enough of him in the film. But, firstly, no one promised much of the Joker - he is not a member of the Suicide Squad, and his interest is purely personal: he wants to take back his “favorite toy”, and that’s all. We'll probably see a lot more of the Joker in the Batman solo film: that's where Summer will really hit its stride.
Secondly, Leto plays a completely different Joker from The Dark Knight
Nolan, and that's just a fact you have to live with.
Throughout the history of DC Comics, the image and behavior of the Joker has changed countless times, and this Joker is one of the options. Here he is extremely scary and dangerous. This is a real natural disaster. Truly absolute and completely insane evil
.
► According to the latest data, there are several Jokers, and one of them served as the prototype for Jared Leto’s Joker.
The Joker's behavior is best described by the scene in the club, from a flashback. He puts his “business partner” in a terrible and hopeless situation. No matter what he does, no matter what he undertakes, it will all end badly for him. This Joker seems to be testing himself every minute, as if he is proving something to himself. Something that can never be proven.
In a word, you can only sympathize with Batman and such and such a Joker - you will have to squeeze your buttocks even tighter.
► Eh, such an actress - and such a bad role! This is where it really is “miscast”.
The love story between Joker and Harley is perhaps the most striking impression from the film. This love is completely sick, but at the same time natural. No sugary vanilla or romantic clichés, only natural human feelings, a hundredfold enhanced by madness. Harley is ready to do anything for the Joker: jump into a vat of chemicals, die, kill. At the same time, she wants one thing - to be close to the one she loves, and, oddly enough, a calm family life with him.
At the same time, the Joker desires independence and justifies his attraction to Harley with a sense of ownership, they say, I made her like this, she is my thing, my favorite toy. But in fact, without Harley, the Joker feels damn bad, and he cannot understand the nature of this feeling because of his pride. Now tell me that real human relationships work differently. That's it.
► The most natural love on screen in recent times, oddly enough.
You can blame “Suicide Squad” as much as you want for the fact that this is not another “Marvel” film, which is what many are doing, coming up with exaggerated arguments to justify themselves. But it’s time to come to terms with the fact that the ass ring as a gift to the bride is Marvel (even if it’s Deadpool
"was not filmed by the publishing house's own studio, but the film reflects the general concept very accurately), and complex human relationships are DC Comics. Both approaches are good and correct, but Marvel makes spectacular movies about superheroes, and DC makes spectacular movies about people. Sometimes in raincoats, sometimes with guns, sometimes dressed as clowns. But still about people.
An excellent movie outside of genres, which can’t even be called a superhero. And yet it's canonical.
Heath Ledger
Whatever one may say, real tragedy broke out only in the life of one actor who got involved with the Joker. But can we talk about a real curse here? Let the reader decide for himself. Our job is to present the facts.

Probably, the way Heath worked on the role is not worth repeating, because it is already known. He locked himself in a hotel room and didn’t leave there for a month, experimenting with his voice and his famous laugh. At this time I slept little and was emotionally exhausted. The offer for the role did not come at the best time of his life: his love relationship ended and he stopped seeing his daughter.
According to him, the role scared him, but he still wanted to play the Joker in his own way. As a result, he managed to penetrate the inner world of an absolute psychopath, who is completely alien to remorse.
On August 4, the blockbuster “Suicide Squad” was released - a paradoxical story of supervillains saving the world. As part of the film's promotional campaign, Jared Leto, who played the crazy maniac Joker in the film, said in an interview with the Russian HELLO! about madness, comics and a specific sense of humor.Without exaggeration, Jared Leto can be called a strange person. At home in Los Angeles, in his living room, he keeps a coffin, he dreams of living in a cave, and in a conversation with reporters, answering a question about the secret of his youth, he never tires of repeating that he drinks the blood of babies at night.
This year, Jared will turn 45 years old, but he has no intention of settling down and stopping being rebellious—he prefers touring with his rock band 30 Seconds to Mars and crazy antics on stage to red carpets and social events. Jared appears on the big screen no more than once every 3-4 years - for roles that match his character, risky and controversial. In 2013, the actor played a transgender man in the film “Dallas Buyers Club” and won an Oscar, and now he will appear on screen again - in the image of the iconic comic book villain, the unbalanced maniac Joker.
For the sake of this role, the actor not only dyed his hair acid green, but, while continuing to play, he himself went a little crazy: first he threw a box with a live rat to his colleague on the set, Margot Robbie, and then left a gift in the form of dead pig.
“I wanted to immediately place emphasis in our relationship,
— Jared says with a smile, remembering that incident.
“The Joker loves bright gestures, he would approve of such a trick.”
And then he adds: “But I will never tell you where I got this pig, don’t even ask. And I don't regret what I did one bit. It was part of working on the role." Obsessed with his character on set, he talks little about it in real life and rarely reveals anything to the press. For obvious reasons, Jared does not want to reveal all the secrets until the premiere of Suicide Squad, but he shared some details in the interview.
Jared, you rarely act in films these days, but you accepted the role of the Joker in David Ayer’s film Suicide Squad. Why?
Because it is a challenge, and a very powerful one. Many famous actors played the role of the Joker in good films - they played sharply, riskily, they were remembered precisely because of this image. And this is a huge success and responsibility - to join the squad of the chosen ones, and to play a role after everything that happened before. How could I refuse?
The film is based on a comic book series. Do you love them yourself?
In America it is a whole culture. When I was little, I was given a box of old comic books. I remember that I immediately buried myself head over heels in these magazines and the magical worlds and superheroes described there completely captivated me.
The Joker also often appears in comics, he has a whole army of fans among readers...
It is already 75 years old... In any case, it was created so many years ago. (Smiles.) And he really became a cult hero: this bad guy was shown in cartoons, on television, in movies, and cosplays were made of him. And each time they reinvented it to suit the times. Perhaps this is the whole secret of his popularity.
“Suicide Squad” is a team of supervillains who, according to the plot of the film, are sent by the government on a deadly mission. It consists of: Slipknot (Adam Beach), Boomerang ( Jai Courtney
), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Rick Flag (Yuel Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnoye-Agbaje) and Diablo (Jay Hernandez).
When it was your turn to play the Joker, what did you start with?
Director David Ayer and I immediately decided to look for a new approach, to make this character different, even crazier. The fact that many actors had already played him was to our advantage. We immediately realized what we shouldn’t do: repeat ourselves. And most importantly, the Joker himself has no rules or boundaries. He only has instincts. This is exactly how I approached this work, breaking all the rules: I read a bunch of literature, watched a movie. And then filming began, and I forgot about everything I had read.
And how did your Joker turn out in the end?
You understand that I’m not allowed to reveal all the secrets before the premiere? (Smiles.) I can only say that for me this character became a real person. To some extent, it was a transformation on the physical level, a transition to the state of the Joker. I even talked before filming with doctors and psychiatrists, and then with their patients - psychopaths and criminals, in order to better understand his madness - and this benefited me, helped me unravel the character of the Joker. He's a nice guy with a great sense of humor - from a certain point of view.
You were clearly inspired by Stanislavski's method when working on the role. And the director gave you complete freedom of action?
David, of course, took part in the creation of the character: for example, the various tattoos on the Joker’s body were just his idea. But otherwise, he trusted me and simply let go of the situation, allowing me to do any crazy things. An invaluable quality of a director is to let another person participate in the creation of a character, to become something of an author-observer. This is why I love good cinema, and this is why it was one of the best shoots of my life. I liked playing psychological games.
The most famous Jokers in cinema
1.
The star of the 50s and 60s, actor Cesar Romero was one of the first to try on the green Joker wig on television. Despite the demands of the make-up artists, the actor flatly refused to shave off his favorite mustache - as a result, the image of the insidious villain in his performance turned out to be slightly comical.
2.
Nicholson's trademark smile became even more noticeable thanks to the Joker's makeup, but fans of the character did not like it, criticizing his performance. Jack himself was not worried: the actor still receives income for his participation in “Batman” through deductions from profits.
3.
The role of the Joker was the penultimate one in the career of Ledger, who died tragically in 2008. The director of the film called his performance fearless, and in 2009 the American Film Academy awarded the actor a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Jared Leto on Suicide Squad: "Being around psychopaths was good for me"
Jack Nicholson
Surprisingly, while working on the image of the Joker, the famous actor began to have the same problems as the “first victim of the villain” Cesar Romero. At first, D. Nicholson liked the complete freedom that Tim Burton, the director of the film “Batman,” gave him, then, apparently, the character began to absorb the actor, penetrate all areas of his life, and Nicholson began to have headaches, insomnia, and anxiety attacks. Even for such a giant, the role turned out to be too difficult. The Joker performed by D. Nicholson still occupies the first places in all kinds of charts. Perhaps the actor penetrated into the inner world of a serial killer incapable of repentance, even deeper than his creators managed to do?
It is also noteworthy that after this role the actor did not play openly crazy people. Apparently, by embodying the Joker, he approached the border of true madness.
One more touch. Perhaps D. Nicholson was invited to play the Joker precisely because 8 years ago, in 1980, he showed himself remarkably well in Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel “The Shining.” Although, to be honest, Nicholson plays the role of Jack Torrance in such a way that it seems that the hero is already on the verge of insanity, then he simply lets himself go and madness comes into its own.

The news that Heath Ledger had accepted the role of the Joker greatly excited D. Nicholson, and he excited people with a vague hint that was leaked to the press: “Well, I warned him.”
Mark Hamill
Mark Hamill is a different story. By the time he took on the Joker, he was already one of the pillars of pop culture: he played Luke Skywalker in three films of George Lucas's landmark Star Wars saga, and the alliance with the Joker was formed only in 1992. Then there were various cartoons and video games , in which the villain spoke exclusively in the voice of Mark Hamill. The fact that the Joker is voiced by “Luke Skywalker” added to the piquancy of the situation.
Naturally, the actor was asked what it was like to spend so many years with a character like the Joker? Mark Hamill replied that his character is completely unpredictable and each new script forces him to look for new details of the character. He compared the Joker to a spice spice: “If you add too much of it to a dish, it makes the food sick. But when she’s not there, you want her unbearably - that’s what the Joker is for me. I never thought it would be how popular it would be."
But, apparently, the villain was doing his dirty work, and at a time when M. Hamill's work was gaining popularity, the press began to predict to him that now he would voice only one character until his death, as did the great Mel Blanc, whose voice Bugs Bunny spoke . The actor fought back and replied that he did not deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as such a master of the craft as Mel Blanc. Besides, he now has at least two memorable roles in cinema history.
