Biography

The future star of the sports saga “Moving Up” Kirill Zaitsev was born into the most athletic family.
His parents graduated from the Physical Education Academy. Mom did the shot put, and dad threw the hammer. As the actor himself says, he had a “genetic need for sports.” As a child, Kirill was involved in swimming, shooting, billiards and, of course, basketball. “One of my friends got me into basketball during my school years. And it so happened that at some point all the guys around me were having a great time,” says the actor. “And I naturally wanted to be no worse than others, to excel, to beat someone and score beautifully.”

In 2005, after graduating from high school in Volgograd, Kirill Zaitsev entered the State Maritime Academy named after Admiral Makarov in St. Petersburg, the navigating department. After graduating from the nautical academy, he became interested in yachting: he participated in sailing regattas and made quite long passages on a 17-meter Latvian yacht Spaniel. Later, in 2011, by coincidence, he left for Riga.

It was in Riga that his journey as an actor began. One day he saw an advertisement for an acting course at the Riga Russian Theater named after Mikhail Chekhov. I decided to give it a try and was accepted. In 2014, Kirill Zaitsev graduated from the Latvian Academy of Culture, a course of Russian directors Igor Konyaev and Elena Chernaya.

Movie

Kirill Zaitsev is one of those actors who one day woke up famous. “Moving Up” was preceded by a small work in the Latvian film “The Chronicle of Melania”. The role of the Soviet basketball player Sergei Belov brought the artist enormous popularity in 2018.

At first, the director of Moving Up, Anton Megerdichev, tried Kirill Zaitsev for the role of Lithuanian basketball player Modestas Paulauskas. And the next day the actor received a call and was invited to try out again, this time for the main character - Sergei Belov.

Kirill waited a long time for approval for the role; all this time he trained hard. “I have loved basketball since childhood and therefore I thought that I would train hard until I found out exactly who was approved for the role of Belov. If not me, then in any case I will be in plus – in good physical shape,” says the actor.

After approval, without slowing down, Kirill Zaitsev began training in Moscow, learning specific combinations for the film. Nikita Mikhalkov's TRITE Studio provided almost ideal conditions: the artist lived next to the Sports Palace, where he could hone his basketball skills every day.

When the film was finally released, the actor was already heavily involved in new projects. Filming for “Moving Up” took place in 2020. But it’s not like in the theater, where you immediately feel the audience’s response. While the film was being prepared for its premiere, Kirill Zaitsev managed to take part in three large-scale projects: the full-length film “Gogol” and the TV series “Trotsky” and “Cop”.

In the detective series “Cop,” the actor plays the main role of American policeman John McKenzie, who comes to Moscow to join the Investigative Committee to exchange experience with Russian colleagues. The cop's partner is the Russian girl Vasilisa, played by actress Anna Snatkina. In each episode, John and Vasilisa solve a new crime, while simultaneously solving their internal problems against the backdrop of a clash of two different cultures.

In 2018, the film “To Paris” is being filmed - the story of tank crews who went through the war shoulder to shoulder and decided to celebrate the Great Victory in Paris. On the way to the French capital, exciting adventures await the heroes. Kirill Zaitsev played one of the bright roles in this film, whose script was written by Stanislav Govorukhin.

In the same year, the television series “Godunov” was released, in which the actor starred in the “star” of ]Sergei Bezrukov[/anchor], Andrei Merzlikin, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Anna Mikhalkova, Sergei Makovetsky, Viktor Sukhorukov. The historical saga about the Godunov family, which covers a long period, from the reign of Ivan the Terrible to the accession to the throne of Mikhail Romanov, was filmed by film director Sergei Andrianov.

In 2020, the actor received the Golden Eagle Award for his supporting role in the film Moving Up.

Interview

"Do what you must, and come what may"

“I didn’t delay and wait for approval for the role of Belov, I just said to myself: “Do what you have to do, and come what may.” When you love something, you have desire and strength. I waited eight months for a final answer. I tried not to think about how cool it would be to play in this movie, but tried to concentrate on the personality of Sergei Belov, study him, understand him, try to live his life and at least get a little closer to the physical stress that a professional basketball player experiences. . There is a stage in an actor’s work on a role—getting an emotional impression of the life of his character. So this is the impression I received. I started pumping my legs like Sergei Belov in order to increase my jump and fulfill the dream of my school years - to score from above into a standard ring 3.05 m high from the parquet. I began to spend all my free time on the basketball court. My best friends were the ball and the ring, as Sergei Belov wrote about himself. I just played a lot of basketball: no matter with whom, no matter where. I needed to plunge into this life, and it was interesting to me.”

"Upward movement"

“I recommend reading Sergei Belov’s brilliant book, which, like the film, is called “Upward Movement,” not only for athletes. This is an excellent example of a conscious path to high achievement. Sports here are only a model, suggested circumstances. The laws are almost the same in any field of activity. The famous basketball player writes that he could tell how in his free time he picks up a volume of Bunin, but in reality this is not so, because if you want to achieve high sporting achievements, then there is no time left for anything else. Obsessed people devote themselves entirely to their work. This book opened up a huge amount of thought. I understood what was going on in the main character’s head.”

About Riga

“Riga is one of the best cities in the world. Compact, with good ecology, close to the sea and forest. Latvia has a pleasant climate and distinct four seasons. My favorite places are the beach and bakery in Saulkrasti and the “Sea Gate” - lighthouses in Mangalsala and Bolderaja. I arrive there, stand for a while, and the longing for the sea passes. Well, from every trip to Riga I always bring “Black Riga Balsam” to my Moscow friends.
