From late 2000 to November 2001, Farrell dated actress Amelia Warner.

On September 12, 2003, at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Colin's ex-girlfriend, Canadian model Kim Bordenave, gave birth to Farrell's son, weighing 3.43 kg, who was named James Patraig Farrell

). However, after some time, the couple also broke up. Despite the end of the relationship, Colin was not going to give up his son and said that he would provide for him for life. The actor himself could not be present at the birth of his son due to filming the film “Alexander” in Morocco, but during this event, Colin’s mother, Rita, and his sister were with Kim [18]. Later, Farrell admitted more than once that James was a real gift, that he was the one who changed his whole life, and fatherhood is the best job he has ever had[19]. In 2007, Farrell announced that James suffered from Angelman syndrome.[20]

In December 2005, the actor voluntarily entered a rehabilitation clinic to get rid of his addiction to painkillers and recreational substances[21]. The official version is that Farrell began taking painkillers due to frequent back pain.

On October 7, 2009, Farrell had a second son, who was named Henry Farrell and baptized in Poland.[22] The mother of the child was Alicia Bachleda. Colin Farrell met her on the set of Ondine in 2008, but kept their relationship secret until he announced in September that the Polish woman was expecting a child. On October 15, 2010, a message appeared that Colin and Alicia had separated[23], and soon this message was officially confirmed.

In March 2011, rumors appeared that Colin and Barbadian singer Rihanna had a rather serious relationship, such that Farrell introduced the singer to his children and family[24]. But a couple of weeks later, these rumors were officially denied[25].

  • Drama, historical film.

The historical drama of a living classic - the wonderful visionary director Terrence Malick - takes place in the 17th century, when the British were just beginning to explore the territory of America. One of the first settlers, Captain John Smith (Colin Farrell), falls in love with Pocahontas, the daughter of an Indian chief.

For the role of veteran John Smith - a real historical figure - Colin Farrell read all of his books, written upon his return to England. Unfortunately, despite Malick's talented direction and Emmanuel Lubezki's unsurpassed cinematography, the film failed at the box office and barely repaid its production.

Lay low in Bruges

In Bruges

  • UK, USA, 2007.
  • Black comedy, crime, drama.
  • Duration: 107 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7.9.

The main characters are hitmen Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson). Because Ray has just failed an important assignment, his boss (Ralph Fiennes) sends his companions to the picturesque Belgian town of Bruges. There, the killers have only one task: keep a low profile, sit quietly and wait for instructions. And while Ken explores the surroundings with admiration, Ray suffers from remorse and dies of boredom.

Martin McDonagh's crime comedies are often compared to the films of Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie, but the Irish playwright has definitely created his own unique style. His films are simultaneously a comedy full of witty dialogues, a satire, a drama, and an intense psychological thriller.

At the moment, the role of Ray, for which Colin Farrell received a Golden Globe, can be called the pinnacle of the actor’s creative skills.

Colin Farrell: 'Fatherhood is the best job'

Carier start

2015 pleased fans of Colin Farrell with two interesting projects at once - the science fiction film 'The Lobster' and the TV series 'True Detective'. There hasn't been such a stir around Farrell's person for a long time - perhaps since the film 'Alexander', which made him famous throughout the world. Where did the famous actor start, and why has nothing been heard about him in recent years? Advertising:
Colin Farrell was born in the capital of Ireland, Dublin on May 31, 1976. Colin grew up in a large family. His father, Eamon Farrell, was a footballer for the Shamrock Rovers club, and his mother, Rita Farrell, was involved in housekeeping and raising children. Besides Colin, there were three more of them - two daughters and the eldest son.

When Farrell was 10 years old, the family moved to the Dublin suburb of Castleknock. Here he went to Castleknock National School and then to the local college. However, it was never possible to finish it. In his youth, Colin was distinguished by an obstinate character - he rarely attended classes, smoked marijuana, and hung around bars with friends. One day he fell asleep in class and when the teacher demanded an apology, he used his fists. After this he was expelled from college and never returned there again.

Not knowing what to do with himself, Colin and his friends left for Australia. He stayed there for about a year, and when he returned, his older brother Eamon advised him to go to acting school. Farrell thought this was a good idea and began attending 'The Gaiety School of Acting'. However, after some time he dropped out of this school too. Instead, Colin began acting in commercials, and soon made his film debut, playing a cameo role in the film The Disappearance of Finbar (1996).

First successes

Once, while playing on stage at the Donmar Warehouse in London, Farrell attracted the attention of Kevin Spacey. Tom liked the aspiring actor’s performance, and he persuaded the producers to give Colin a small role in his film “Common Criminal” (2000). And although the film was a complete failure at the box office, Farrell’s performance received positive reviews.

Thanks to this work, Colin managed to get the role of Private Roland Bozz in the anti-war drama 'Tiger Country' (2000). It became an important stage in the development of his film career. The actor received his first awards and positive reviews from critics, who vied with each other to talk about his stellar future.

Farrell's career took off sharply. In 2002, two landmark films were released with his participation - the military drama Hart's War and the science fiction thriller Minority Report based on the legendary story by Philip K. Dick. And if the first film was not a big success at the box office, the second earned 358 million, becoming the main film event of the year. The actor again found himself in the spotlight and was nominated for several awards.

The success of Minority Report made Colin Farrell one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood. In 2003, he appeared in five films at once, of which the most successful were the crime thriller 'SWAT Special Forces of the City of Angels' and the comedy melodrama 'Break'. Unlike the first work, the second, staged in the actor’s homeland of Ireland, was well received not only by viewers, but also by critics. And Farrell was nominated for several European awards.

World famous

Despite his constant employment in films, Colin Farrell remained virtually unknown to the world public until 2004. As the actor recently admitted, the fact is that he is very passive and always waits for the agent to find him a suitable role. Another reason was that until 2004, Colin played only minor characters. And his first leading role brought him worldwide fame.

Colin Farrell photography

We are talking about the historical drama 'Alexander' (2004), which tells the story of the famous commander Alexander the Great. Despite the star cast and the scenes filmed on a grand scale, the film was crushed by critics and grossed only 34 million at the American box office. But it was a success in Europe, where it was generally received favorably. The only exception was Greece, where they wanted to ban the painting because it allegedly showed a distorted, unreliable image of the great commander.

Colin Farrell photography

Be that as it may, it was the role of Alexander that made Farrell recognizable all over the world. The following year, he appeared in the historical drama New World (2005), and a year later in the crime film Miami Vice. Department of Morals' (2006), based on the popular TV series of the 80s. These works cemented Colin's success in Hollywood.

Colin Farrell photography

The real discovery of Farrell’s dramatic talent were the films “Cassandra’s Dream” (2007) and “Lie Down in Bruges” (2008). The first work, a crime drama by the famous director Woody Allen, tells the story of two brothers who commit a crime and become bitter enemies. The film received high marks from critics, and the actor's performance was received with a bang.

The second work - the black tragicomedy 'Lay Down in Bruges' - tells about the adventures of the hitman Ray. This role brought Farrell many nominations and a Golden Globe, and also became, according to most critics, one of the best in his career. For the next few years, the actor was involved mainly in passing films. The only exception was the next film adaptation by Philip K. Dick - the fantastic action movie Total Recall (2012).

Colin Farrell once again made his mark in 2020 with the release of the bizarre, surreal film The Lobster, which won the Jury Prize at Cannes. According to the actor, as soon as he read the script, he agreed to star in the film without hesitation. He also received an offer to play one of the main roles in the second season of the acclaimed TV series True Detective. Both works became a big event in the world of cinema and opened up new facets of Farrell's acting talent.

Personal life

In Colin Farrell's personal life, peace and tranquility now reign, but he was once known as a big party-goer and hooligan. But, according to the actor, all this is a thing of the past. Currently, he prefers to walk in parks, eat healthy and do yoga. It sounds boring, but without consequences.

Colin doesn’t have any relationships now either, but he has a marriage with actress Amelia Warner, the birth of two children and fatherhood. The actor's first child, son James, was born in 2003 from Canadian model Kim Bordenave. According to Farrell, this event became the most important in his life and completely changed it. And fatherhood, Colin says, is the best job he's ever had.

Despite the birth of their son, Farrell and Bordenave were together for only a year. In 2008, while filming the film Ondine, he began a romantic relationship with actress Alicia Bachleda. This romance also did not last long, but in 2009 Alicia gave birth to a son, Henry, from Colin. Two years later, rumors appeared about the actor’s serious relationship with singer Rihanna, but after some time they were officially denied.

Colin Farrell believes in marriage and living together, but believes that family is not for everyone. And, in his opinion, everything depends on the situation in life. For example, for the last six years he has lived alone and feels comfortable. But he doesn’t know what awaits him tomorrow. When asked what he is willing to sacrifice for the sake of art, the actor replies that almost everything. At least he will have no problem playing in a low-paying project if it interests him. After all, Farrell long ago learned to make money in alternative ways. For example, as the actor jokes, his perfume is selling well.

True Detective

True Detective

  • USA, 2014 - present.
  • Detective, crime, drama, neo-noir, southern gothic.
  • Duration: 3 seasons.
  • IMDb: 9.0.

True Detective can easily be called one of the most exciting and talented series ever released. The first season, which featured two Louisiana State Police detectives trying to solve a mysterious murder case, earned rave reviews from critics.

The main location for the second season was California. Detectives from three collaborating police departments are investigating a series of crimes they believe are connected to the murder of corrupt city manager Ben Casper.

Detective Raymond Velcoro (Colin Farrell) is a man with a difficult fate. After his wife was raped and gave birth to a son, the hero withdrew into himself. Nevertheless, he tries to be a good father and adores his child to the point of oblivion. Velcoro's distinctive feature is that despite all his shortcomings, he is capable of self-sacrifice for the sake of others.

The second season was less successful than the first and received no awards. Viewers missed both the Louisiana gothic atmosphere from the first season and the compelling plot. But it’s worth watching if only for the powerful cast: Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughn as the crime boss.

One day, an uninvited guest, teenager Martin, interferes with the peaceful life of successful heart surgeon Stephen Murphy (Colin Farrell). The fact is that due to Stephen’s fault, the boy’s father died on the surgical table. And now misfortunes befall the doctor’s family one after another.

In “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” one can find all the characteristic features of Lanthimos’ directorial style: absurd atmosphere, detached acting, pretentious dialogues. In addition to the brilliant Farrell, one can note the performance of Nicole Kidman. Together in the same year they played in another major project - “The Fatal Temptation” by Sofia Coppola.

The film was also decorated with the work of the young Irish actor Barry Keoghan, known for his strong dramatic role in Christopher Nolan’s film “Dunkirk”. And not so long ago, Barry appeared in a major HBO project - the series Chernobyl.

In 2006, Farrell played one of the key roles in Michael Mann's crime action film Miami Vice, a remake of the 80s series. In 2007, the actor played one of the main characters in Woody Allen's drama Cassandra's Dream. The film is about two brothers, the “bad” one played by Colin and the “good” one by Ewan McGregor.

An important role in Colin Farrell's film career was played by the film "Lie Down in Bruges" (2008), for which he was awarded the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. A year later, he played a small role in the science fiction film “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” which also starred such celebrities as Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp and Jude Law. In subsequent years, the actor’s filmography was replenished with such films as “The Way Home” (2010), “The Bodyguard” (2010) and “Horrible Bosses” (2011). A new wave of popularity came to Farrell thanks to his role in the film Total Recall (2012), a remake of the 1990 film of the same name with Arnold Schwarzenegger. After this, Colin got the main roles in the films “Seven Psychopaths” (2012) and “Saving Mr. Banks” (2013).

Colin Farrell - "True Detective"

In 2014, Farrell joined the cast of the second season of the popular TV series True Detective. The project allowed him to remind viewers of how brilliantly he is given dramatic roles. The second season, according to critics, turned out to be significantly weaker than the first, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, but was still generally received positively.

Colin Farrell - "The Lobster"

The next successful project for the actor was the film by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos “The Lobster” (2015). The role of a mature single man, David, brought Farrell nominations for the European Film Academy Awards and the Golden Globe.

In 2020, the actor appeared in the role of Percival Graves in the fantasy film by David Yates “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (2016), a film adaptation of the book of the same name by JK Kathleen Rowling. In 2020, Farrell starred alongside Kirsten Dunst, Nicole Kidman, Anguary Rice and Elle Fanning in the dramatic western The Fatal Temptation (2017) by Sofia Coppola.

The Beguiled

  • USA, 2020.
  • Drama, Western.
  • Duration: 93 minutes.
  • IMDb: 6.3.

The film takes place during the American Civil War. One of the students at a boarding school for girls finds a seriously wounded corporal of the northern army, John McBurney (Colin Farrell), in the forest. And although the rules require him to be immediately handed over to the army of the southerners, the owner of the boarding house Martha (Nicole Kidman) allows the soldier to stay for a while to improve his health. This leads to love passions unfolding in the boarding house: after all, handsome John has sunk into the heart of almost every woman living in the house, hungry for male attention.

Oscar winner Sofia Coppola set out to remake the 1971 film The Beguiled from a woman's point of view. It’s impossible to say that she succeeded: the remake differs from the original only visually, but not ideologically. And the reason to watch it is rather the wonderful actors. In addition to Kidman and Farrell, the film stars such stars as Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning.
