Biography
Natalya Surkova is a Russian theater and film actress, Honored Artist of Russia. The actress’s best works are considered to be her roles in the military drama “Ours,” the social film “Fool,” and in the TV series “The Favorite” and “The Great.”
Natalya was born in Nizhny Novgorod into a working-class family: her father worked at a factory, and her mother often went on business trips to Moscow and St. Petersburg for work. At that time, the Surkov family was considered prosperous, because the mother brought foreign new clothes from frequent business trips. External well-being, coupled with external attractiveness, caused envy and rejection of others and peers.
Actress Natalya Surkova
The need for communication and self-expression allowed Natalya to make an early decision to become an actress. Even as a child, the girl loved to organize performances, where she attracted friends, and her relatives and neighbors were supposed to be spectators.
After school, Natalya entered the Gorky Theater School, where her teachers were V. S. Sokoloverov and R. Ya. Levite.
Immediately after graduating from university, Natalya began working as part of the Cheboksary theater troupe. A few years later, director Semyon Spivak noticed her and invited her to the stage of the Young Theater at Lenconcert. Surkova still does not understand what Semyon Yakovlevich found in her.
Natalya Surkova in the play "Killer Whale"
The creative collaboration between the director and actress did not start out so optimistically. Right during the rehearsals of the actress’s first performance, “Tango,” Surkova’s partners suggested that the director remove Natalya from the role. But Spivak had the patience to wait three months, when the actress, in her own words, “struck” and she revealed herself in all her glory.
Later there were the roles of “Killer Whale” and “Little Lady” in productions of the same name, Lucille in “The Bourgeois in the Nobility” and Countess de Saint Fonds in “The Marquis de Sade”. The collaboration between the young actress and her artistic director turned out to be long and fruitful.
ugly duck
Natasha's beautiful appearance and good clothes aroused the envy of her peers. They considered her a “crank” (the girl loved to organize performances to which she invited her family, neighbors and friends).
When the time came to choose a path in life, Natalya decided to become an artist and entered the theater school of her hometown. Studying was difficult for her, primarily due to the fact that the girl was unprepared for the grueling acting work that lasts 24 hours a day. The teachers did not see her as a professional actress and did not regret that Surkova did not find work in her hometown.
With a diploma giving her the right to work on the professional stage, Natalya got a job at the Cheboksary theater . There weren’t enough stars from the sky, but something caught the attention of the director of the Young Theater at Lenconcert, Semyon Spivak. He took care of the transfer of the young actress to the city on the Neva and waited a long time for the beautiful butterfly to fly out of the chrysalis.
Having steadfastly withstood the attacks of critics, hecklers and envious people, Spivak introduced Surkova to sold-out theater performances, and the actress sparkled with all the facets of her talent. Their joint collaboration has lasted for more than two decades.
Movies
Natalya Surkova began acting in films in 1986, simultaneously with the start of work at the Young Theater. Her first work was her role in the musical film “Here is this yard again” about the residents of Leningrad. In the same year, the artist appeared in an episode of the spy detective story “The End of Operation Resident,” where she appeared in the guise of a young Soviet saleswoman. After the first screen tests there was a 12-year break.

Even before gaining popularity, already in the 21st century, the actress starred with two famous directors. In 1998, she appeared in the famous series “Cops” with Vladimir Bortko. The first full-length film in which Surkova starred in 2000 was called “Gladiatrix” (in the English version - “Arena”). The picture became the debut work of Timur Bekmambetov.
However, the first truly notable work in Surkova’s creative biography was the role of the fortune teller Zhanna in the serial film “Lines of Fate” (2003), which was a great success with the public. Natalya Surkova's partners in the frame were the inimitable Valentina Talyzina, Irina Rozanova, Sergey Garmash, Konstantin Khabensky.

Surkova received audience recognition after her role as Anna in the military drama “Ours,” directed by Dmitry Meskhiev in 2004. This film was highly praised by critics and received dozens of awards: five nominations at the XXVI Moscow International Film Festival, the Nika, Golden Eagle awards, as well as the Golden Aries film critics and film critics award, where Surkova’s performance was especially noted.
To get a better feel for the role, the actress and her daughter lived among the villagers for several weeks before filming began, doing all the usual hard work for them. Initially, the rather portly Surkova had little chance of getting the role of a “Russian woman”. However, Dmitry Meskhiev saw her in the role of Anna and demanded that the actress gain at least 8 kg. Surkova gained 24 kg. These efforts did not go unnoticed; Natalya Surkova received the American Screen Actors Guild Award for her work in the film “Ours.”
Natalya Surkova in the film "The Master and Margarita"
2005 brought the actress participation in another military drama, “Alka,” about students of a choreographic school who went to the front. Natalya got the role of a military paramedic. And in the film adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita,” which was undertaken by Vladimir Bortko, the actress appeared in the role of secretary Anna Richardovna. Alexander Galibin, Anna Kovalchuk, Oleg Basilashvili, Sergei Bezrukov, Vladislav Galkin, Alexander Abdulov shone in the acting ensemble of the mystical series. In the melodrama “The Princess and the Pauper,” the actress tried on the role of a station homeless woman.
Another notable work of that time for Natalia was the role of Catherine II in the TV series “The Favorite”, for which the artist received a prize at the film festival “Vivat, Cinema of Russia!” in the nomination “For Best Actress”. The film was about the relationship between the empress and Grigory Potemkin (Igor Botvin), with whom the empress decided to have a secret marriage.
Natalya Surkova as Catherine II
The actress is not afraid of experiments, so in the black comedy “7 Cabins” she took on the characteristic role of the heroine named Lyudok. The film brought together a star cast: Kristina Kuzmina, Alexey Barabash, Mikhail Evlanov, Fyodor Bondarchuk and Alexander Yatsenko. At the same time, the artist was transported to the era of the reign of Nicholas II, which was recreated in the series “Stolypin... Unlearned Lessons.” Natalya embodied on the screen the image of the wife of the chairman of the Council of Ministers.
The role of Shura’s mother in the film “One War” did not go unnoticed by critics. In 2009, Natalya Surkova was awarded a prize at the Amur Autumn Film Festival in Blagoveshchensk. In 2010, with the participation of Natalya Surkova, the second part of the war film “We are from the Future” was released.
Natalya Surkova in the film “Sunstroke”
Surkova’s filmography includes more than thirty films and TV series, including participation in the top-rated films “1814”, “Catherine’s Musketeers” and “The Brothers Karamazov”. Natalya Surkova starred in three films by Nikita Mikhalkov: “12”, “Burnt by the Sun: Imminence” and “Sunstroke”.
Her most notable work in recent years was her participation in the social drama “Fool” directed by Yuri Bykov, released in 2014. Natalya Surkova played the role of the mayor of a provincial town.
Trailer for the film "Fool"
The film "The Fool", called "the most evil and merciless film of 2014", reveals the ugliness of the bureaucratic machine and human indifference. The film received prizes from the Kinotavr Film Festival, the European Film Festival in Grenoble, the Locarno Film Festival, the Nika Award, as well as the White Elephant Award from the Guild of Film Critics for Best Supporting Actress (Daria Moroz).
The year for Surkova turned out to be fruitful for successful roles. The actress played the wife of Grigory Rasputin in the series “Grigory R.”, the heroine Zoya in the melodrama “The Long Way Home.” 2020 brought Natalya participation in the melodramatic comedy “Divorce of one’s own free will,” where the actress played together with Konstantin Yushkevich.
Natalya Surkova and Yulia Aug
Natalya Surkova herself became best supporting actress in 2020 for her role as Empress Elizaveta Petrovna in the TV series “The Great.” One of the most expensive projects in the history of Russian television and Channel One was released on the country’s screens at the end of 2020. A little earlier, viewers of the Rossiya 1 TV channel were presented with the television film Ekaterina. The role of Elizaveta Petrovna was played by Yulia Aug, who received a similar award a year before Surkova.
It is possible that the choice of actresses was due to their stunning external resemblance. The two actresses could have starred in “The Fool” - the role of the assistant to the city mayor, played by Surkova, was offered to Aug. However, after reading the script, Aug recommended not to repeat the image of the mayor, and the director followed her advice.
Actress Natalya Surkova: “It’s not interesting to put your life on the altar of glamor!”
Brilliant Elizaveta Petrovna in the series “The Great”, amazing Catherine the Second in “Favorite”, humble Praskovya Fedorovna in “Grigory.R”.
And this is all actress Natalya Surkova. They say about people like Natalya: “Power! Talent! God kissed you at birth!” And this is true: in every word of the actress one can feel strength, respect for the profession and the interlocutor. A little about myself, a lot about cinema in an interview with Natalya Surkova for Argumenty Nedeli. From the author
I fell in love with actress Natalya Surkova after the series “The Great”. I was lucky enough to see many pictures about the life of the daughter of Peter the Great. But only Elizaveta Petrovna, played by Natalya Surkova, sunk into my soul. This is my personal opinion. I definitely wanted to interview the actress. I was absolutely sure that the conversation would be interesting. And I was not mistaken! We met with Natalya at the House of Cinema in St. Petersburg. An hour of conversation, for me personally, flew by unnoticed. I wanted to ask and ask, but alas, the actress had to leave for Moscow, where her next filming was awaiting her.
— Natalya, you brilliantly played Elizabeth in the TV series “The Great.” Were you cast for this role right away?
— There were tests. Regular samples. When I passed them, I forgot. I didn’t know whether I would be approved or not. I don’t remember who, but at one event I met a colleague who told me: “We’ll soon be filming together in Velikaya.” You will play Elizabeth." I was surprised: no call from the director, no news. But my colleague turned out to be right: they called me and informed me that I had been approved for the role of Elizaveta Petrovna.

Or
— What was the most difficult thing on the set?
— Playing real heroines is generally difficult. There will always be someone who says: “That’s not true! She wasn’t even close to that!” And there are few historical materials about Elizabeth that have reached us. Very few. What was Peter's daughter like? A woman with a very difficult fate. I can’t say that she was not very educated, but she was prepared for social life: she was taught dancing, languages, good manners. But she was not prepared for the role of empress. And she became one. Elizaveta Petrovna was capricious and somewhat despotic: she could pull someone by the forelock and allowed herself extravagant antics. But at the same time, she had enough courage and courage not to lose the thread that her father had spun. I played the fate of a woman. There is no talk of any historical similarity. A woman and her fate. I won't say that filming was easy.
Even physically. There is a scene where we are at a ball. Naturally, wigs, long and heavy dresses, candles are burning, the windows are tightly closed so that the light does not penetrate. And it's 30 degrees outside! I have a scene with Sergei Kayumovich Shakurov. We film for several hours! The fact that we are pouring sweat is understandable! But we stand in this stuffiness for several hours! I suggested to Sergei Kayumovich: “Let’s sit down!” He tells me: “No! If we sit down, we won’t get up!” What I mean is that it’s always a pleasure to work with great masters. The series “The Great” truly has a golden cast.
- This is true. But when such stars are on the same set, it’s apparently difficult to act. Was it possible that someone was “pulling the blanket” over themselves?
- God forbid! It's hard for me to imagine. If, for example, I allowed this, then what would Sergei Kayumovich tell me? On the contrary, we supported each other. You can't do without this! Everything is immediately visible to the viewer. There must be respect, emotional attraction, and understanding between partners. We had it all on set.
— Natalya, this is not your first role as an empress. There was also Catherine the Great...
— Yes, I starred in “The Favorite,” where I played Ekaterina. A serious historical figure. There were already enough historical documents here. I read and learned a lot about her, and a certain image of this extraordinary woman emerged. I was interested in the simplest things that shaped her character. I had to feel a human being, a woman, in the historical character. And play it.
- But on your “historical list” there is another person about whom we know little - the wife of Grigory Rasputin. I am sure that it is not so easy to play Praskovya Fedorovna. Almost nothing is known about her! Do you agree?
- To a certain extent. And we will never know the whole truth about Rasputin. For me, Praskovya Fedorovna is a deeply religious woman who was endlessly devoted to her husband. She understood everything perfectly, but she decided for herself that, as a true Russian woman, she should endure everything without complaint. She is a married wife. She had everything: patience, humility, devotion, love, but also enormous inner strength of spirit.
— It’s possible that I’m not entirely right, but there are actors who say that it’s difficult to work on the set with Vladimir Mashkov. An actor who is too powerful and “shuts down” his colleagues. How was it working with him?
- Who can say that? I can't even imagine! It’s hard to imagine a more reverent partner. I'll tell you one case. We are in the frame together. We kneel and pray. So that my face was better visible in the frame, Volodya carefully turned my head towards the camera. What are you talking about? Working with Mashkov is a pleasure.
— You play historical heroines in whose lives there were also mystical events. Were you not touched by, say, providence? Didn’t you feel their “energy”?
- No. I didn't feel anything like that. I'm not a very superstitious person. Of course, I’ll sit down on the script if it falls down. If Faina Georgievna Ranevskaya herself sat on the fallen script, then God himself told me to. But I definitely won’t shy away from a black cat! What is she guilty of? The fact that she was born black? Stupidity. But there were moments in my life that are difficult to explain. I was offered one scenario where a brownie appears. A series about a brownie. This is not a horror film, but a comedy. By the way, the script is very cute. I was thinking about it, but I was inclined to act. But there were no specifics yet. And in the evening I went for a walk with the dog and broke my leg. Of course, all filming, sorry, was canceled. What's this? Clue? Providence?
— It’s no secret in the acting community that there is rivalry and envy. Do you feel this yourself?
- I don’t think about it at all! Why should I fill my head with unnecessary thoughts and waste time on it? I live and do not envy anyone. Envy destroys a person. And I want to live in harmony.
— Natalya, it’s difficult to catch you at various parties in the capital. Are you not a fan of such events?
- No. Placing your life on the altar of glamor is no fun. I am not interested. I'd rather spend my free time with my family. I’d better tie it up and put my thoughts in order. This is relaxation for me. Do you know how your head brightens and your thoughts fall into place when you knit? Amazing! Try it!
- Thank you for the conversation.

Personal life
The actress was married twice. In her first marriage to actor Konstantin Gershov in 1993, she had a daughter, Aglaya. The girl followed in the footsteps of her parents and is already a member of the troupe of the St. Petersburg theater on Liteiny. Natalya Surkova’s second husband was also her theater colleague, artist Alexey Titkov. In this union, the spouses had no children together.

Unfortunately, the second union also ended in divorce, and the actress is currently single. She leads a closed lifestyle, focusing exclusively on creativity; Natalya does not have a personal page with photos on Instagram.
Career, Ksenia Surkova
The artist received theatrical roles while studying at VGIK. She played in productions adapted from the works of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol and Shakespeare. But after graduating, I encountered difficulties - I couldn’t find a job in my specialty. I had to “knock on different doors.” But she was lucky: Ksenia was accepted into the Center for Drama and Directing. When it closed, the girl had to experience disappointment again - during one of the viewings, her potential employer... fell asleep.
Film debut
Critics first noticed the young Surkova after filming the film “One War,” a project by Vera Glagoleva. Ksyusha played the role of Natalya, despite the indignation of the then leader Igor Yasulovich. A strict teacher at VGIK forbade students to act in films until they gained experience. However, Glagoleva offered to read the script, and the man changed his anger to mercy.
Fateful year
2011 can safely be called fateful in the career of the young actress. Ksenia got a role in the film “My Dad Baryshnikov”, and also played in the TV series “Closed School” and “Profile of a Killer”. Both film projects had a large number of fans. The series “Closed School” turned out to be especially popular. Surkova’s character is high school student Sonya Gordeeva, who behaves very strangely, arouses suspicion, and it seems to the audience that there is something mystical about the schoolgirl.
In 2012, the film “Three Days of Lieutenant Kravtsov” was released. Famous actors became her partners in the film. The Ukrainian-made film was shown on the Rossiya-1 TV channel and received good ratings from critics. And in 2020, the actress was invited to film the series “Olga”. She got the role of Anya Terentyeva, the daughter of the main character, who constantly finds herself in difficult situations.
Natalya Surkova now
In 2020, Natalya Surkova starred in four projects. The actress appeared in the top-rated series “Doctor Richter.” In the tragicomedy “Frostbitten Carp” she played the role of a registry office employee. The main characters, an elderly provincial woman and her son, who works in the capital in a prestigious position, were played by Marina Neyolova and Evgeny Mironov. Alisa Freundlich also starred in the film.

At the beginning of 2020, the premiere of the science fiction film “The Debtor's Shack” took place, where Natalya Surkova played the role of an accuser. Now the actress is working on a role in the project “Lev Yashin. Goalkeeper of my dreams”, where she will play the stepmother of a young football player.
Biography, Ksenia Surkova
Ksenia Surkova is a young Russian actress whom film critics compare with the most famous Hollywood divas. Including the star of “Silence of the Lambs” and “Taxi Driver” Jodie Foster. The girl received the love and recognition of the audience thanks to her roles in the series “Closed School” and “Olga”. In these film projects she played controversial and discussed characters.
Childhood and youth
Ksenia was raised by parents who encouraged her desire to become an actress. As a little girl, she firmly decided to enroll in a theater institute, after which she would receive roles in films and TV series. The first step towards cinematography was classes at the Domisolka children's musical theater. The teachers who taught acting lessons spoke warmly of the student, saying that she was incredibly persistent, purposeful, and hardworking.
Her film debut took place at the age of 7, when young Surkova starred in the film “Friend”. The event completely turned the girl’s life upside down. From that moment on, she dreamed of cinema, and after graduating from school she entered the VGIK acting department under the direction of Igor Yasulovich. The future star of the series admired his talent. Although audiences fell in love with him not from films, but from theatrical productions.

Natalya Surkova: “Getting fat is much more romantic!”
The latest premiere of Russian cinema is Dmitry Meskhiev’s film “Ours.” The creators of the film have already received many good reviews and prestigious awards - for the best film at the Moscow International Film Festival (by the way, domestic cinema has not received this award at the Moscow International Film Festival since 1991), for best director, and actor Bogdan Stupka - for best actor. Alan Parker called this film the best he has seen recently. And the jury awarded the main prize to “Ours” with the wording: “For an adequate presentation of a private person inside great historical events.”
One of the actresses, Honored Artist of Russia Natalya Surkova , who played the role of Anna in the film, lives in St. Petersburg, works at the Youth Theater on Fontanka, which is also called the “Spivak Theater.” There we met before the play “Marquise de Sade,” where Natalya Surkova plays the fatal Countess de Saint-Fonds.
Actress Meskhieva
— Natasha, you, “Spivak’s actress” in the theater, seem to be becoming “Meskhiev’s actress” in the cinema... How did you get into his film “Lines of Fate”?
— Acting assistant Larisa Sergeeva called me: “Natasha, could you come to the audition?” Having learned that Meskhiev would be filming, I refused: “No, thanks, I won’t go!” They said a lot about him. I was very surprised that Larisa spent a long time persuading me. Usually, as it happens: no? Well, goodbye! Larisa also struck me with one phrase: “I showed Meskhiev your series “Cops.” What kind of acting assistant shows the director a tape?! Well, okay, I think I'll go. To be honest, leave me alone.
And during the auditions I became interested in Meskhiev! - Natalya Surkova admits. - This is that rare director in cinema (as in the theater - Spivak) who knows how to work with actors and respects them. He just has talent! I left in bewilderment. I wanted to play more! And suddenly two weeks later they call me and say that I am approved.
— After the role of Zhanna in the TV series “Lines of Fate”, did you receive offers to act in films?
-Were. But I warned everyone that I’m fat now, not the way I was in the series. Someone even exclaimed: “Lord, you need to get rid of this quickly!”
- Did you smoothly move from one Meskhiev’s film to another - to “Ours”?
- Yeah! There's a whole story there. Four months later I was called to audition for the film “Ours.” “Meskhiev, do you need actresses?” - I asked. “We need two. But you, Natasha, my beloved, will not come. Your butt is small. I need a girl in a body. A film about a village, about a war..."
I'm not that skinny, but give him a fat woman. I ate it in a week. I came to the studio and told the girls: “Please dress me so that I’m thicker!” I really wanted to work with him! Dima came into the dressing room and saw me: “So, Surkova, why did you come? I approve you without testing. But if you don’t gain eight kilograms, don’t be offended, I won’t take it.” As my friend Katya said, “getting fat for a role is much more romantic than losing weight.” And I started to eat away.
A month later everyone just fainted! “Oh, how good you are! But not enough. Let’s do more!” said Dima. And I recruited... I was sent to practice in the village, where I learned to milk a cow, mow grass, turn hay, in general, do everything that village women do. It was just a vacation, I took the child, and we went to the Novorzhevsky district of the Pskov region. We lived there for three weeks. I learned everything: how to heat a bathhouse, how to fetch pigs, how to whip pigs... I learned to speak the village language. Dima doesn’t give much praise, but when he saw me, he said: “Well done, Surkova!”
— How did the theater react to your new look? And, of course, you no longer fit into your old suits...
— How grateful I am to Spivak! Imagine, your artist, to whom you are accustomed, comes, having gained 24 kilograms!.. I told him: “Semyon Yakovlevich, here’s the story: I need to get very fat...” He just sighed: “Well, what should I do with you? Work. And then you’ll lose weight?” - “I’ll lose weight. I can!" Just imagine: everything happens, what if you can’t lose weight? No, he believed me, knowing my character.
I went to the costume designers: “Girls, what should we do?” - “Natusik, don’t worry! We have had such experience working with pregnant women over the past year! We’ll put on your suits and put on elastic bands.” In “Marquise” I have a corset. The dress, naturally, didn’t fit. I am so grateful to everyone at the theater for their understanding!
Shaking Hearts
— Usually actresses ask the cameraman to film them more beautifully. With you it's the other way around. How did your relatives, acquaintances, and fans react to your appearance on the screen in such, frankly, unsightly form? They probably gasped?
“I sent my family in Gorky a photo from the filming. “You’re 50 years old here!” - said my aunt. To be honest, I only care about the quality of the work, the meaning, and not about who will perceive me how. Oddly enough, this is the first film where I like myself on screen. I rarely like myself at all. But here - very much. Probably because I was striving for this result. And I achieved it.
It was hot and hard
— Natasha, does art really require sacrifice?
— The director explained that he needed a portly Russian woman. I understood him. He still thanks me when we meet for understanding him and making such sacrifices. Now there are different sacrifices: denying yourself something tasty, a couple of extra hours of sleep in order to go to the gym... But it was interesting for me to work in this film. It was interesting to act in this script, with this director, with this company, in this role. If I didn't want to, I wouldn't do it.
I began to lose weight very quickly. In six months I lost 20 kilograms. This is a huge number.
- And how did you get fat?
— I led a sedentary lifestyle. I slept a lot. I ate a lot. Bakery. Fat. Beer in combination with fatty sausage, scrambled eggs - you immediately gain a kilogram. I didn't think it was so hard to get fat. It got to the point of nausea. When we were filming, it was very cold, everyone was wearing down jackets, freezing, and a “river” of water was flowing down my back. I was constantly hot. This feeling of “globalism” of the weight room is, of course, not very pleasant.
The main thing is character
— Have you returned to your previous form? Did you come in in your theatrical costumes?
- She came in. I don’t have much left: the heaviest is three kilograms. The first kilograms come off well, but the last ones come off more slowly and heavier. Now I'm doing figure modeling. By summer I will be in perfect condition, such that I like myself.
- Wow!
- Well, I have character. This is good. I raised him for a very long time, because as a child I was a complete slob.
- And at the same time I see: you eat chocolates and ice cream. Is it possible to?
- Yes, I can do that. I have a special nutrition system. My trainer (I do shaping 2-3 times a week) developed it for me and strictly monitors me.
- Keep it a secret?
- There are no secrets. On the day of classes you cannot eat protein: meat, fish, bread. Throughout the day I eat 2-3 apples and drink a cup of unsweetened coffee. Or I eat cabbage stewed in water and drink coffee. But a little bit of everything. You can’t eat at all for three hours after class.
— Do you cook for your husband and daughter?
- Of course, but I don’t eat it myself. How am I holding up? Well, if you, say, are allergic to ice cream, you won’t eat it, it will make you feel bad, right? That's all you can't do! I tell myself: “Today I can’t do this. Tomorrow can be". These temptations seem stupid to me. Well, why didn’t I eat caviar? Cakes? Didn't you drink champagne? She ate and drank. And I’ll drink, I’ll eat in my life. Therefore, I can limit myself to two or three times a week.
