Maryana Timofeevna Spivak

(born March 23, 1985, Moscow) is a Russian theater, film and dubbing actress. She became widely known in 2020, playing the main role in Andrei Zvyagintsev’s film “Loveless”.

Biography

Maryana Spivak was born on March 23, 1985 in the family of actor and director Timofey Spivak (born 1947) and actress Ekaterina Vasilyeva (born August 19, 1961), who played the role of Alena in the film “You Never Even Dreamed of...”. Her maternal grandmother Zhanna Prokhorenko (1940-2011), a famous Soviet film actress, grandfather Evgeny Vasiliev (1927-2007) - director of the film “Farewell of the Slav”.

In 2002, Maryana entered the Moscow Art Theater School in the workshop of Igor Zolotovitsky and Sergei Zemtsov. During her studies she played in educational performances: “Hamlet” ( Gertrude

Career of Maryana Spivak

The actress made her film debut at the age of six, when she received a small role in her grandfather’s film “Until the Thunder Strikes.” Since then, the craving for theater and cinema has not left the young beauty.

The actress made her theater debut during her student years. The first was the production of “Hamlet” and the role of “Gertrude”, the second was “The Nameless Star” and the image of Mona. The next works were the classics – “Don’t part with your loved ones”, “Three Sisters”.

Not counting her childhood years, Maryana Spivak’s debut role was the role of Vasilisa in the fairy tale “Grief and Misfortune.” Then the girl was still in school and once again realized that acting was her thing. Already in the status of an actress, she starred in the full-length films “Son of the Father of Nations,” “Clever Man,” “Fedorov,” and “Loveless.”

Maryana’s grandmother is the famous actress Zhanna Prokhorenko, whom older viewers will probably easily remember from “Kalina Krasny” or “The Ballad of a Soldier.” It is curious that the woman in the family was not called grandmother, because Zhanna Trofimovna always looked great, even in old age. The family used to call her simply, “Zhanetik.”

The actress’s grandfather is also a famous person in Soviet cinema. This is Evgeny Vasiliev, director of the film “Farewell of the Slavic Woman,” which has become a cult film. Maryana's parents, the second generation, are also known to the audience. Her mother, Ekaterina Vasilyeva, was the heroine from the famous melodrama, “You Never Dreamed of It.” Among the most famous roles of Maryana’s father Timofey are the recognizable, large-scale works “Maritsa” or “It was the fourth year of the war.”

Therefore, it should not be surprising that the fate of the girl born in 1985 was already predetermined long ago. There were creative, enthusiastic, talented individuals in her family.

True, Maryana Spivak had to endure the breakdown of her family after her parents’ divorce. The girl was only 3 years old at that time. The parents quickly exchanged the shared apartment for two. Only both purchased living spaces were in the same high-rise building.

Later, the mother and little Maryana moved, choosing the Troparevo area, as it was closer to the grandmother of the future actress. Later, by the age of 14, the girl was already living with her grandmother, when her mother remarried, she soon gave birth to Ksenia, her youngest daughter. Maryana later recalled that she was extremely close to her grandmother at that time and even considered her her second mother. But after the divorce, Spivak continued to communicate with both parents.

It’s interesting that Maryana first tried to resist the “signs of fate,” although being an actress is the cherished dream of millions of girls. On the contrary, she declared that she was ready to become a veterinarian, most importantly, not an actress. After all, the girl, like thousands of children, had to be an involuntary listener to home conversations where the “kitchen” of the acting environment was discussed. And I often didn’t like what I heard. Yes, thousands of girls dream of one day shining, receiving standing ovations and leading roles, but they only see the shiny surface of the acting world. Maryana was exposed to the other, seamy side. That's why she wasn't eager to go there at first.

Actress Maryana Spivak admitted that she took serious and repeated steps to master and learn other professions. For example, I learned current English by attending courses from the Diplomatic Academy. Moreover, she studied diligently, receiving a special diploma, where the girl’s outstanding achievements were noted. At the same time I managed to master Latin and French. However, her willpower fought with her genes and the latter won. At first, the girl was celebrated by the school leader, and Maryana was often a star at school events. At the same time, I studied well. It’s interesting how they fought the desire to “be different,” to stand out, to avoid the stage and filming with an alluring scene. After all, it was not for nothing that Maryana was called the star of events; the girl often performed when school performances were organized. I set the numbers myself. Already in high school, the Spivak girl attended various preparatory courses presented by the Moscow Art Theater.

Her parents didn’t like her zeal too much; they tried to dissuade the girl and offer other options. The decision grew stronger inside, and perhaps the last straw was her conversation with her godmother, also a famous, talented actress like Marina Levtova. Her daughter, Daria Moroz, was still studying at that time, a student from the Moscow Art Theater, a studio school. The girls were friends.

After graduating from school and receiving a certificate, Maryana applied at random to several theater universities known to her. The girl herself doubted whether her plan would work out. But apparently genes cannot be deceived. Maryana was able to pass three, if you look at the list of everyone, the Moscow Art Theater was there. The future actress chose it as an educational institution, deciding to study together with Daria Moroz.

On June 1, Andrei Zvyanitsev’s film “Loveless” was released on Russian cinema screens, receiving the jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The main role in it was played by 32-year-old actress Maryana Spivak. Zvyagintsev's film became her feature film debut. According to Maryana, she never dreamed of acting with a famous artist, because such work seemed to her an unattainable height. Spivak spoke about this in a recent frank interview with reporters.

As the woman notes, the tests lasted six months. Zvyagintsev immediately warned Spivak that he had been selecting and approving actors for roles for a very long time. However, Maryana reacted extremely calmly to this information. According to Spivak, before that she had only acted in TV series, so she took the casting as an interesting experience.

When Andrei Zvyagintsev finally approved the actress, she did not believe it at first. “Everyone was waiting for a call with the words: “Sorry, we changed our minds...” recalls Maryana. As it turned out, the artist had other doubts. The plot of the film tells about problems in the relationship between husband and wife, which negatively affect their common son Alyosha. The main character considers the child a burden that prevents her from organizing her personal life, says Spivak. Maryana herself has a completely different situation in her personal life.

“There is such a contradiction among actors: when you play very involvedly, you can attract the events that happen to the character... I had fears before filming the film Loveless. After all, it’s about a divorce and an unnecessary child, but everything in my life is wonderful: love, family, son. But, thank God, everything worked out,” said the actress.

According to Maryana, she previously had to experience the superstition common among artists herself. While working on the play “The Seagull,” the woman’s partner Anton Kuznetsov began courting her. At first, Maryana believed that a man simply could not get out of character, but after some time the actors began an affair. Since then, they have been together for six years and are raising their son Gregory.

Anton Kuznetsov rejoices at the success of his common-law wife and tries to support her in everything. “When Maryana walked along the red carpet, I was filled with pride for my wife! Even tears began to flow from an excess of emotions,” Hello! magazine quotes the man.
