Biography and personal life of Nikolai Drozdov
The biography and personal life of Nikolai Drozdov began in the capital. He was born and raised in Moscow on June 20, 1937 in an intelligent family of scientists with a long history. An interesting fact is that his great-great-great-grandfather on his father’s side, Metropolitan Philaret, was even canonized as an Orthodox saint.
Father - Nikolai Sergeevich Drozdov, was a professor, worked at the chemistry department at the Moscow Institute of Medicine. Mother - Nadezhda Pavlovna Dreiling, worked as a general practitioner at a city hospital in Moscow. Her mentor and leader was Academician P.E. Lukomsky. Nikolai Drozdov is not the only child in the family. He also had an older brother, Sergei Nikolaevich Drozdov.
As we can see, Nikolai Drozdov’s interest in science was inherited. His parents instilled in the boy a love of nature. They often went on hikes with their father, where little Nikolai Drozdov watched various animals. At the age of 12, he worked with great pleasure as a shepherd, tending horses. It is known that at that time Nikolai Drozdov even dreamed of becoming a centaur.
During my school years, I attended a biology club at the Darwin Museum.
After graduating from school, he entered the Faculty of Biology of Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov. Later he took academic leave and worked in a garment factory. Then he graduated from the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University. Later he defended his candidate’s and soon his doctor’s dissertation.
In his youth, Nikolai Drozdov took part in various scientific and research expeditions across the territory of the USSR. In the early 70s, he interned in Australia at the Department of Zoology at the National University, about which he later wrote an interesting book, “Flight of the Boomerang.”
He also participated in foreign scientific expeditions and conquered Elbrus. He has earned many different medals, prizes and awards.
Since 1968, he has taken an active part in the television program “In the Animal World.” In addition, Nikolai Drozdov is the creator of several films about animals, writes books and articles, is a scientific consultant and much more. The journalist also becomes a radio host of the ABC of the Forest program on Children's Radio. He took part in the filming of the program “The Last Hero”. “I tried to minimize the celebration of the anniversary”
— Nikolai Nikolaevich, on your 80th birthday we couldn’t get through to you by phone! So please accept belated congratulations.
- Thank you very much! The fact is that I traveled around Australia for a whole month - I covered 5 thousand kilometers. Crossed the deserts several times from north to south. I returned in June, just before my birthday, a lot of things had accumulated...
— How did you celebrate the anniversary?
“I tried to minimize it all.” Of course, we celebrated for several days, but it was not on my initiative—my loved ones organized it. I live, I grow old, we all grow old. One stage of old age replaces another. Should I be happy? Why?
— You are in good physical shape. Travel, work!..
“I don’t like compliments, but I hold on to it, because movement is life.”
— You now periodically carry out expeditions with tourists around the already mentioned Australia. We've been there dozens of times ourselves. Are you bored? After all, everything is already known.
— I am, after all, an expert on Australia - in my youth I worked there for a year, wrote my doctoral dissertation, so this country is interesting to me not only for its nature, but also for the changes that people make to this nature. I’ve been working on the continent since 1971... Some people are interested in the very fact of communicating with animals, but I don’t just need to see a kangaroo, but to look and study how it has adapted to the fact that instead of a wild desert there are now full of roads, cars rush along them at terrible speed , there are hotels, motels all around... These are the changes that interest me.
— Isn’t it annoying that people on expeditions ask amateurish questions?
“They say that one person who knows little is able to ask so many questions that a hundred wise men will not have time to answer.” Therefore, this is interesting to me: I increase the level of knowledge of all the people traveling with me. I’m not going to travel with fellow scientists to discuss things during the trip. After all, I give lectures to my students - I’m not at all bored by the fact that they ask questions and are interested. On the contrary, it’s nice that they came to me knowing little and left with knowledge.

— Traveling to Australia is not a cheap pleasure (a tour with Nikolai Nikolaevich for 11 days costs an average of 300 thousand rubles, tours are sold by an Australian travel company), so not everyone can afford it. Where would you recommend spending a vacation that would be inexpensive but interesting?
— We have so many interesting places in our country! There is a whole system of nature reserves and national parks. You are not allowed to go far into nature reserves, but you can explore national parks.
— Which ones do you recommend visiting to get unforgettable emotions?
— You should definitely go to Baikal! The Oka Nature Reserve in the Ryazan region is wonderful. In the Moscow region there is a beautiful Prioksko-Terrasny Nature Reserve, surrounded by the Russian Forest National Park - Muscovites can go here without spending the night.
I hope that over time Lesha will host “In the Animal World”, and I will watch
— This year has been an abnormally cold and rainy summer...
— I am a professor at the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University, and right on this same floor, opposite us, is the Department of Meteorology. These are questions for them about the weather.
— How does our animal and plant world survive such a summer? What will be the consequences?
- No problem! These are people being capricious. As soon as it gets warm: “It’s hot!” As soon as it rains: “How can you survive this?!” This is completely normal weather for animals and plants.
- Yes, animals are not as capricious as we are!
“They have neither air conditioning nor specially heated holes. They know that there is a type of weather in which they do not get out of their homes, and there is another - when they can go out. Now the situation is within normal limits.

— Where else have you visited this summer, besides Australia?
- I just returned from Crimea, I was invited to Artek - to the Scarlet Sails festival of children's and youth films. We had very interesting meetings with the Artek people. The president of the festival, Vasily Semenovich Lanov, and I (and we are people of the old school - we are both over 80) were the only ones who at 7 am went down the rock down to the sea and then climbed back - the rest were afraid. And we lived, it should be noted, in a small hotel at the height of... a 15-story building.
from me:
It is curious that Nikolai Nikolaevich Drozdov demonstrated his love for animals right there in Artek during one of the ceremonies. From his place in the front rows, where the honored guests of the festival were sitting, Drozdov saw a stag beetle crawling onto the area in front of the stage where the young artists were to appear. Drozdov, fearing that the beetle might be accidentally trampled by the show participants, rushed to the insect and saved the poor fellow, moving him to a safe place, which caused applause.

Nikolay Drozdov about vegetarianism and a healthy lifestyle
Ecology of consciousness: “I became a vegetarian in 1970, when I worked with Alexander Sguridi in India. I read a book about the teachings of yogis, and realized that there is no need to eat meat for three reasons
Nikolai Nikolaevich Drozdov is a professor at Moscow State University, Doctor of Biological Sciences, host of the TV show “In the World of Animals” since 1977, Member of the Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Advisor to the UN Secretary-General on Ecology, Academician of the Russian Academy of Television, laureate of many international and domestic awards. Born June 20, 1937 (77 years old).
“I became a vegetarian in 1970 while working with Alexander Sguridi in India. I read a book about the teachings of yogis, and realized that there is no need to eat meat for three reasons, because: it is poorly digested; moral (animals should not be offended); spiritually, it turns out that a plant-based diet makes a person more calm, friendly, and peaceful.”
Naturally, a big lover of animals, even before this trip he was thinking about a moratorium on meat, but after he got acquainted with the culture of this country, he became a convinced vegetarian and took up yoga. In addition to meat, Drozdov tries not to eat eggs, but sometimes allows himself kefir, yogurt and cottage cheese. True, the TV presenter treats himself to these products only on holidays. For breakfast, Drozdov prefers oatmeal, because he considers it very healthy, and always eats pureed pumpkin. And during the day he eats vegetable salads, Jerusalem artichoke, cucumbers, cereals and zucchini. As Drozdov’s wife Tatyana Petrovna says: “Nikolai Nikolaevich simply adores zucchini and eats them in any form.”
from the interview “The benefits and harms of meat diets”
- As you age, you need to give up meat - this is the secret of long-livers. And Nikolai Drozdov thinks so. Nikolai Nikolaevich, your opinion is so authoritative, so I ask you to take with full responsibility what you are going to tell us now. I know that all your life you have been a person who loves to live, eat deliciously, and try everything. But you gave up meat. How did this happen?
- Yes! Well, that was a long time ago! A long time ago! In 1970.
— Nikolai Nikolaevich, what was the reason for such a refusal?
“I felt like I was overloading myself.” You eat something and it takes so much energy to digest it. It's a shame to waste time. And here we came with Alexander Mikhailovich Sguridi, the founder of our program “In the Animal World”, he invited me as a scientific consultant to the filming of his film “Riki Tiki Tavi”, the plot of Kipling. To India. We travel and film in India. We traveled everywhere in more than two months. And everywhere I looked at the literature of yogis, which we had in our pen at that time. And now I see that I could have guessed it myself - man is not by nature adapted to a meat diet. Let's see. Mammals are divided according to their dental system. First, small predatory shrews appeared, with predatory sharp teeth. And now they are running in the undergrowth. They catch insects and gnaw them with these teeth. This is the first stage. After them primates appeared. At first they were so primitive, like shrews, then prosimians appeared, then monkeys. Prosimians also eat everything, and their teeth are sharp. By the way, the larger the monkeys, the more they switched to a plant-based diet. And already the gorilla, orangutan and large gelada baboons that walk through the mountains of Ethiopia simply eat grass. There isn't even any tree food there, so they just graze in such herds.
— Nikolai Nikolaevich, what product replaced meat protein for you? How do you think?
— Plants contain so much protein, vegetable protein. Especially in peas, various legumes, spinach, and beans. This vegetable protein may well be for the construction of our body. There is an old vegetarian diet, where there are no dairy products and eggs.
- So-called pure vegetarianism
- Yes. But young vegetarianism allows dairy products and eggs. And it is better to consume fermented milk products, this is understandable. Therefore, you can live perfectly well without meat.
From an interview
“In old age, life is fun, interesting and instructive; you learn more and more new things, you read more. Over the years, homo sapiens, that is, Homo sapiens, feel more and more spiritual components in life, and physical needs, on the contrary, decrease. Although for some it happens the other way around. But this does not lead to anything good. An older man doesn’t take care of himself, drinks, overeats, goes to nightclubs - and then he is surprised that his health and appearance have deteriorated, he has gained weight, has shortness of breath, and everything hurts. Who is to blame but himself? If in youth excesses can somehow be compensated for, then in old age this is no longer the case. This is the kind of old age - God forbid, and the person punished himself. I can’t even call him homo sapiens.
How do I stay fit and positive? I won't reveal anything new. Life is motion. But the twentieth century gave us such civilizational conveniences that lead to deadly physical inactivity. Therefore, I would advise you to forget about the sofa, soft chairs, pillows and warm blankets, and get up early in the morning and just go for a run. For example, I am interested in ice swimming, skiing and horse riding. And I haven’t watched TV for five years now, although I work in television myself. I learn all the news from people. Eat less meat (and I don’t eat it at all). And the good mood will not go anywhere.
And if we speak from a spiritual, moral point of view, I think that my great-great-great-grandfather, Metropolitan Filaret (Drozdov) of Moscow, prayerfully supports me. Of course, my parents also gave a lot; they were believers.
Not only love for nature, but, more importantly, faith in God, hope and love - these eternal values have become my credo, my philosophy of life.” published

Meeting with his second wife
The first meeting with Tatyana took place in the elevator. However, there was no love at first sight. Nikolai lived on the seventh floor, she lived on the fifth. The second time they met was at a neighbor’s house over a cup of tea. We started talking. It turned out that the girl works in one of the ministries in the secretariat. And Nikolai just needed help with reprinting the text. The fact is that the scientist was writing a book about his trip to Australia.
Joint activities brought them closer; it seemed that kindred spirits had finally met and recognized each other. Drozdov spoke with fascination about distant travels, overseas animals, unusually beautiful landscapes, and the gentle ocean. Tatyana listened and did not believe her happiness - this was the man of her dreams. According to Nikolai Nikolaevich’s recollections, that day the girl revealed a new side to him - she turned out to be an attentive, thoughtful interlocutor, serious and not frivolous. Besides, when I was next to her I wanted to perform feats and make an impression.
