- How are you doing, Dmitry? How are you coping with quarantine, what are you doing?
“I’m experiencing it in the same way as everyone else: I try not to go out too much, I only walk around the house and allow myself some banal joys that I have long forgotten about. For example, sitting at home in front of the TV, leisurely drinking tea - I could not afford these completely everyday things for many years. And now I’m so involved that I can’t seem to leave the profession completely. But they keep pushing me. The children’s “Voice” has just finished, and at the same time I’m preparing my own Internet project. In my heart of hearts, I am certainly glad that there is a demand for an elderly artist, beaten by time and prayer. On the other hand, sometimes I think: “Lord, why?”

"I'm a patriot, but not a loudmouth"

— What internet project are you preparing?
— Something was born in my fevered brain, I told the idea to the guys I knew. It turned out that it might turn out funny, so now we will write something, build something inexpensively and put together something small... But seriously, there will be a project, but it’s too early to talk about the details.
— They say all sorts of things about the coronavirus, including that it is a global conspiracy. What do you think about this situation?
— If we don’t take into account the tragedies of people who suffered from the coronavirus - and we know that many died, many had a hard time with it, many are still sick... If we don’t take into account the work of doctors who are overwhelmed, and I know, that this is so, there are acquaintances in this environment, then I think everything else can benefit us. True, the death of people - you can’t bring them back - cancels out this benefit.

— Here are some popular statements now: after self-isolation there will be a baby boom, as well as a divorce boom. People will reassess their values - we finally stopped, looked at ourselves, and spent time with our loved ones. Which of these theses do you agree with?

— Probably with everyone: there will be a baby boom, and the number of divorces will increase one hundred percent. When people chose a mate for life, they never expected that they would have to sit nose to nose with this couple for several weeks. This revaluation comes at too great a cost to all of us.
On the other hand, we made such a mess of everything around us that we probably didn’t find another way in heaven, we didn’t know how to help us, how to tell us that it was impossible to live like this any longer - cutting down, stealing and pumping out.
— Do you think something will change in human relations? Or will everything be quickly forgotten and life will return to normal?
- Let's be honest: for some, something may change, but by and large, we - those who now live on this earth - cannot be changed. We must leave so that those who will build everything completely differently will come. You and I already live in absolute darkness and have been moving towards it for quite a long time. I'm talking about what we have basically done on this planet. Surely there are many beautiful worlds out there. Why did we choose this particular dead-end path of development?
I want to believe that something will change, but you and I are not children and we understand that it will not change for long. Just so as not to go into an uncontrolled feast in honor of the exit from this plague.

— If I wanted to get involved in politics, I would do it, you are asking the wrong question. I can only express my deepest regret for what is happening to people. I see how they are running out of money. The simplest example is that we proudly talk about the development of small and medium-sized businesses. My brother has a chain of mini-hotels, he dismissed people, everything is closed. To continue paying salaries, he sold his car. But we have a state to which we pay taxes. Why doesn’t it take care of those who are left without work due to self-isolation? Some people today have nothing to eat - the simple little person about whom Chekhov and Gogol wrote.
— How is the filming process of “Nagiyev in Quarantine” going? While everyone is content with the modest capabilities of the zoom, it is filmed with a professional camera, with a cameraman and lighting...
— The fact is that I again succumbed to the persuasion of director Sarik Andreasyan. Once he persuaded me to star in “Unforgiven” - he said that the story was simple and it would all be done quickly enough, but I almost died from worries and endlessly re-taping beards for several months. Now everything is developing in absolutely the same direction - he said: “Let’s quickly film 10 episodes of 10 minutes each.” As a result, 10 minutes grew into 19 minutes, and then it turned out that due to lack of time and people, we were forced to work with a small group and resources. So now we’re grinding like hell, without a break, and we’re churning out a product that could last a week. There are only a few of us, we wear masks, we spray all sorts of sanitizers on each other’s hands, faces and ears.

— In an interview with Izvestia, Sarik Andreasyan said that the situation with coronavirus neutralizes the scale of such films about the epidemic as “Contagion” and “I am Legend.” In reality, billions of people simply bought toilet paper and are sitting at home. Do you have the same thought?
— Everything related to toilet paper and buckwheat is not for me. I try to come up with stories that are at least a little more intricate and make jokes that are a little more subtle.
— And if you yourself made a film about coronavirus, would it be a drama or a comedy?
- I don’t think about it at all - I think you shouldn’t think about it, you shouldn’t devote your life to such thoughts, you shouldn’t tug at fate in one place. We will live as long as each of us is given. It is better to devote thoughts and attention to your loved ones. I am completely uninterested in the topic of coronavirus unless it concerns my work on camera.

“Fortunately or not, I’m a little smarter to get to this point just now.” I realized much earlier that there is nothing more interesting than life itself. And what I do is just a microscopic part of the interesting, beautiful, complex, loving life that unfolds around us. I just don’t have a way out and never had one, I’m forced to work, do what happens to me. These are not always worthy projects, sometimes it would be much more useful to sit at home and give this time to your loved ones, but I am a hostage to this lifestyle and the family - very poor - into which I was born, so I just work all my life. Now, perhaps, I’ve just become convinced that sitting at home can be not boring, and communication and conversations about nothing, about some trifles, are much nicer than trying to squeeze out something wise in the frame.
— Which director gave you the greatest pleasure?
- If I don’t list someone, I will be misunderstood. I am grateful to almost every director; I tried to learn something from everyone. Of course, there were some complete scoundrels, and I won't work with them anymore.
— The most important disadvantage of the acting profession, which is still difficult for you to come to terms with?
— I think almost everyone will answer the same. The hardest thing in our profession is to wait and be dependent. I absolutely don’t want to be a producer and lie to people that I like it, but I want to act because I haven’t played enough of it yet. As a result, I sit and wait, trying to convince myself that everything is going fairly and that at least someone understands me as a talent...
