Denis Cheryshev's childhood
Denis Cheryshev was born in Nizhny Novgorod on December 26, 1990. From early childhood, the boy knew that he would become a football player. And all because Denis’s father was the legendary Dynamo Moscow football player Dmitry Cheryshev. Looking at the example of his famous father, Denis began playing football from the cradle.
Little Denis Cheryshev with his father, Dmitry Cheryshev
Denis had just turned 5 years old when Dmitry Cheryshev received an offer from Sporting Gijon. The whole family moved to Spain. For little Denis, such a sudden move became a real test. He didn’t understand a word of Spanish, and had to literally learn a foreign language on the fly.
Denis attended a preparatory school, where lessons were taught for Spaniards and in Spanish. Cheryshev admits that for the first few months he could not understand a single word of what the teachers and children said. But, over time, Denis got the hang of it and began to speak Spanish fluently, like a native.
Denis Cheryshev’s professional development took place in Spain
Dmitry Cheryshev made a lot of efforts to provide his son with a decent future in the sports world. After moving to Spain, Denis began training at the Sporting sports school, the club in which his father played. When Cheryshev Jr. became seriously interested in the best football club in Spain, Real Madrid, Dmitry Cheryshev left his career without hesitation and devoted all his time to developing his son’s career.

In 2013, Real signed a new contract with Denis Cheryshev and immediately loaned him to Seville. True, the season for the Seville team did not work out due to injuries. He played only four matches.
Denis got a second chance to prove himself in the main team of Real Madrid after the 2014-2015 season, which he spent wonderfully on loan at Villarreal - he was twice included in the symbolic team of the championship at the end of the month and fought with the same Ronaldo for the title of best player in the league. Which clubs wanted to see Denis . The first to become interested in Denis Cheryshev was the English club Everton. The British offered the Spaniards six million euros, but Real turned them down. Later, when Denis’s sports career took off, other clubs became interested in the midfielders: Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle. However, Real Madrid head coach Rafael Benitez did not allow him to leave the club. According to Cheryshev himself, the amount of compensation specified in his contract is 20 million euros.
Russian or Spanish . For a long time, in interviews, Denis called himself a Spaniard, not a Russian.
“I came to Spain at the age of five and have been living here ever since,” he told reporters. — I only go to Russia on vacation or to see my grandparents. My Russian part is quite limited and manifests itself only in the fact that at home we speak Russian so as not to forget the language. And so I feel like a Spaniard.
However, later Denis began to say that he was always drawn to Russia.
Be that as it may, the Russian language served him well. Once at Real Madrid, he quickly found a common language with many players, and especially became friends with Cristiano Ronaldo, whose play he had previously admired. At that time, Ronaldo was dating the Russian model Irina Shayk, and Denis helped the Portuguese football player master the Russian language.

Russian team . Having Spanish and Russian citizenship, Denis Cheryshev could play in the national teams of any country. However, the footballer chose Russia. Mainly due to the high competition that exists in Spain.
Denis began playing for Russia in the U17 youth team. And in 2011 he made his debut in the youth team in a game against Azerbaijan. A year later, Denis Cheryshev was for the first time included in the final roster of the main Russian national team for a friendly match against the USA. It was against the Americans that his father played as part of the Russian national team.
In 2020, Denis Cheryshev was again included in the final roster of the Russian national football team, which is especially honorable, since the World Cup will be held in Russia.

The first one in Real Madrid. Denis is the first Russian footballer to play for Real Madrid and score a goal. He appeared in the starting lineup in the second leg of the 1/16 finals of the Copa del Rey season 2012-2013 against Alcoyano and was replaced in the 61st minute.
The beginning of the career of Denis Cheryshev
Denis's serious sporting achievements began with joining the ranks of Real Madrid's youth team in 2002. Cheryshev performed well in the team, got along well with the management and coaching staff and passed through all levels of the youth team without hindrance. While playing for Real Madrid, Cheryshev became the champion among clubs in the youth league, and also received a personal achievement - “Best Sniper of the Tournament.”
The next stage of his career at Real was joining the club’s second most important team, Real Madrid Castilla. Having played 2 seasons for this team, Denis was able to develop his talent even more, as can be seen from the results of both seasons.
Football player, son of a football player
The fate of little Denis was largely predetermined by the fact that his father was the football legend Dmitry Cheryshev, who once played for Dynamo Moscow.
Denis was born on December 26, 1990, and they say that he absorbed the love of football from the cradle. Denis's family moved to Spain when he was 5 years old, and this was a real test: ignorance of the language and culture greatly hindered his ability to get closer to his peers. However, within a few months the energetic boy began to speak Spanish absolutely fluently.
Later, Denis began training at the Sporting sports school, where his father played. And Cheryshev Jr. was soon noticed in Real Madrid, and they began to say that he was a promising football player in the future. And as it turned out, the forecast was correct.
First sporting achievements
As soon as Denis Cheryshev joined the youth team of Real Madrid, he began to show good results; for one of his games he was even awarded the title “Best Sniper of the Tournament.” In addition, he is the first Russian football player to join this team and score a goal.
The next stage of Denis's career was playing for Real Madrid Castilla, where over the course of two seasons he showed excellent results and further honed his skills. He always taught him to score goals from Cristiano Ronaldo.
Then there were the teams Sevilla, Villarreal, Valencia. And in any team, Denis found a common language with the players and coach, showing good discipline, composure and determination.
In addition, he also studied teaching football, and in the evenings he taught children - he taught them to play and love football as much as he loves it.
In the Russian national team
Many are surprised that Denis Cheryshev became a member of the Russian national team, but he says that he has always been and remains Russian - a Russian guy from Nizhny Novgorod. Despite the fact that Denis has a contract with Villarreal since 2020, he showed a brilliant result at the 2020 World Cup. And despite all the failures and injuries, he remains a very promising player. All thanks to a real sporting character.
Under the eyes of specialists
Each football player is assessed according to several parameters, and each has its own distinctive characteristics. Experts recognize the strengths of Dmitry Cheryshev:
- courage;
- endurance;
- speed;
- great technique.
Confusion is considered a weakness, but it is noted that sometimes it can even be a plus.
Denis Cheryshev to Real Madrid
Denis Cheryshev managed to get into the base of Real Madrid only in 2012. It is worth noting that before Cheryshev, not a single Russian was included in Real Madrid. Denis played as a striker, side by side with the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo.
Denis Cheryshev - the first Russian football player in Real Madrid
As part of Real Madrid, Denis won the Champions League in the 2015-2016 season. During his stay in the Los Blancos team, Cheryshev managed to play a year in Seville, where he was remembered for the number of injuries during the game. It is unknown what caused such a traumatic season, but Denis describes this period as “experience and learning.”
After Sevilla, Villarreal became interested in Cheryshev, where Denis spent another season. The next stage of his career was Valencia. Denis said that he chose Valencia from several options. Cheryshev quickly adapted to the team, found a common language with the players and coaches, and settled into his new city. Many accuse Cheryshev of the fact that he cannot gain a foothold in the elite Real Madrid, but is constantly transferred to the disposal of other clubs. At the same time, Denis manages to shine in every new club in an amazing way. It is thanks to this “versatility” that the price for Cheryshev in the 2015-2016 season was as much as 20 million euros.
In 2020, the football player signed a 5-year contract with the Spanish club Villarreal.
Since 2020 Cheryshev has been playing for Villarreal
Denis Khrustalny. Why should we forget about Cheryshev
This summer, tired of waiting for a chance at Real, Cheryshev moved to Villarreal on a full-time contract. For an amount of 7-8 million euros, the “submariners” received a Russian for the next 5 years. How many of them Denis will spend in the hospital and how many on the field is the main question that torments the fans of the Spanish club and the Russian national team.
In Madrid they believed in the Russian only in words. In fact, he never rose higher than Castilla. It’s a paradox, but nothing terrible happened to Denis in the second team of Los Blancos. For two seasons he played regularly and scored, eventually ending up on loan to Sevilla to Unai Emery.
Cheryshev arrived there not healthy. In the qualifying match for the 2014 World Cup, Capello released Denis during the break, and after 6 minutes he left the field, led by the arms of the medical staff. After receiving treatment, Cheryshev made his debut for Seville. I started at the start and broke down after 15 minutes. It was at the end of September, and the injury did not look serious, but the midfielder returned to the field only at the beginning of February.
Three weeks later, the Russian, who had just begun to settle into the lineup, was out of action again. In the 1/16 of the Europa League with Maribor, Cheryshev received a blow to his ankle and was ruled out for another three weeks. In mid-March, while finishing his recovery, the Russian suffered a partial fracture of his fifth metatarsal bone during training. During that season, the midfielder returned to the hospital 5 times.
A series of injuries did not bother Villarreal, who rented Cheryshev next season. Primera 2014/2015 was the only decent year for Denis. The Russian played in most matches, starting half of them in the starting lineup. Scored 4 goals and provided a dozen assists. But even domestic experts, noting the Russian’s progress, said that the winger’s performance was not high enough for the winger. Injuries did not spare Cheryshev at Villarreal either - a dissection of the head, a rupture of the rectus femoris muscle, which would become chronic. Denis will miss the spring due to two such injuries.
After a successful season, Cheryshev decided to try his luck again at Real Madrid with Rafa Benitez. Denis did not play in Madrid - half an hour in Primera until the New Year and a memorable match in the Cup, where Cheryshev scored, but did not have to play due to disqualification. As a result, Real was removed from the competition, and the Russian ended up in Villarreal six months later, in transit through Valencia. Zidane, who replaced Benitez, also did not count on Cheryshev, and Denis needed practice to go to Euro 2016.
At Valencia, Cheryshev started healthy, scoring three times in six matches for his new club, but suffered a hamstring injury in early March. Two months later, the Russian returned, coming on as a substitute in the match against Villarreal with half an hour left. But he didn’t finish them either, receiving another injury. Doctors decided on the need for surgical intervention due to chronic tendinopathy of the rectus muscle of the left thigh.
Genetically, he recovers quickly. Sometimes even too fast. Injured muscles recover, and neighboring muscles weaken. Therefore, it is easier for Cheryshev to get injured. But now everything must be different. We clean out all his scars. I hope that after the new operation he will be able to play for a long time without injuries.
Felix Ledesma, physiotherapist for Real Madrid and the Russian national team
Cheryshev - crystal? Complete nonsense! Denis had different injuries. In case of relapses, it is not the player’s fault. His career will definitely not be shortened because of this problem. Every athlete is susceptible to injury at some point in their career. I am sure that at the beginning of the next season he will already take the field and forget about his past problems.
Eduard Bezuglov, Russian team doctor
Despite the optimism of the doctors, Denis recovered from the injury, which took him away from the next 4 months of football, including Euro 2016, only by the beginning of September. By that time, Marcelino Garcia Toral, who initiated his move to Villarreal, was no longer at the club - he was fired back in August, handing over the reins to Fran Escriba.
Cheryshev was in the starting lineup at the Santiago Bernabeu, playing against Real Madrid for the first time, but in general the Submariners coped well without the Russian. While he was being treated, the core of the team was formed. And Escriba has no reason to integrate an injury-prone winger there. This season, Cheryshev appeared in only half of the matches, spending on average less than half an hour on the field.
Cheryshev missed the match with Leganes due to a sprained leg muscle. Before this, Denis was kicked in the head while trying to make a tackle in Zurich in a Europa League match - he also had to change, although it turned out to be a bruise. Now Villarreal is considering the possibility of parting with the Russian by loaning him out.
But we are interested in him primarily as a national team player. From a human point of view, there are no complaints against Denis. When called and set, he gave his all, although he did not fit into the playing model too much. In the summer of 2014, I flew with the national team to Brazil, having completed the entire training cycle, with no chance of getting into the squad. Both big tournaments where Denis could have played were robbed of him by injuries. However, there are no prerequisites to see him on the field in 2020 yet.
Back in August, Cherchesov expressed skepticism about Cheryshev, suggesting that he wait until he gets into shape. Experimenting and sometimes calling people who do not have playing experience like Mogilevets, Denis Cherchesov was never called up to the banner. Does this mean that at least at the Confederations Cup the coaching staff is not counting on him? Maybe. If, after the Christmas break, Cheryshev doesn’t start showing off at the club, he has almost no chance of getting into the lineup. But the Russian Spaniard began the countdown to the World Cup a thousand days ago.
Denis Cheryshev in the Russian national team
Denis Cheryshev is a member of the Russian national football team. Journalists often ask whether Denis regrets his choice, because he could have been called to the Spanish national team. Denis always answers these questions that he is Russian and is proud of it. According to Cheryshev, goosebumps run through his body when he hears the Russian anthem. Denis was a member of the youth team, and then joined the main team, just like his father did in his time.

In 2020, the Russian national team’s preparations for the Euro Championship were in full swing. But Cheryshev’s participation in it turned out to be a big question. After another injury, the football player had to go under the surgeon’s knife and undergo surgery on his hip. Surgical intervention could not be avoided, since Cheryshev was diagnosed with chronic tendinitis of the thigh. The operation was successful, after 4 months of rehabilitation Denis was expected to return to Valencia and the Russian national team. But he couldn’t get into the Euro squad, just like Igor Denisov, who suffered a muscle injury on the field a week before the start of the World Cup.

Where did you play?
Dmitry Cheryshev played in various European teams, including Sporting Gijon. From 1994 to 1998 he was a member of the Russian national football team (played ten games and scored one goal). From the summer of 2020 to January 2017, he coached Mordovia Saransk.
Previously, he coached such football clubs as the Spanish Sevilla, the Russian Zenit-M and the Kazakh Irtysh (Pavlodar).
Denis Cheryshev today
In 2020, coach Stanislav Cherchesov included the football player in the national team for the World Cup. On June 14, in the first match of the World Cup, where Russian football players played against Saudi Arabia, Cheryshev came on as a substitute instead of Alan Dzagoev, who was injured in the first half. Denis managed to score a double in the opponent's goal - in the first half and at the end of the game. The Russian team won the opening game of the home World Cup with a score of 5:0, and Cheryshev himself was recognized as the best player of the match.
In the second match against the Egyptian national team, Cheryshev scored a goal in the 58th minute. The scoring opened 12 minutes earlier with Egypt's own goal. Then Artem Dzyuba scored the goal. The Russian team won with a score of 3:1 and for the first time in history advanced from the group to the World Cup.

Despite the defeat to Uruguay, Russia reached the 1/8 finals, where they met the Spanish team. Denis Cheryshev did not make it into the starting line-up, however, after coming on as a substitute, he scored in the penalty shoot-out awarded after the end of the extra periods. The national team won with a total score of 5:4 (1:1 in regular time and 4:3 on penalties). In the quarter finals, Cheryshev scored the first goal against Croatia, but Russia lost on penalties and was eliminated from the championship.
Career at Dynamo Moscow
At the 1992/1993 pre-season training camp, the striker fell into the sphere of interests of the capital club Dynamo. Cheryshev was distinguished by his high speed and phenomenal work with the ball, he was perfect for the new club. In his debut season, Dmitry took part in 22 championship matches and hit the opponent’s goal 7 times. This result was satisfactory for the club, so Cheryshev remained the team’s main forward for the next season. In total, between 1993 and 1996. played 104 official matches for Dynamo and scored 37 goals. As part of the “blue and white” team, he won silver and bronze medals in the Russian Championship (in 1994 and 1993, respectively). In the 1994/95 season he won the Russian National Football Cup. It was at Dynamo that Cheryshev became a real football star - in 1994 he was called up to the Russian national team.
In the 1995/1996 season, Dmitry almost became the top scorer of the Russian championship, but in the final rounds he was overtaken by Alexander Maslov and Oleg Veretennikov. As a result, Cheryshev became the third “scorer” in the country. As a result, this season was the striker’s last in Russia; his further football career was in Spain.
Biography and career
When Denis was 5 years old, his father received an offer from Sporting Gijon and accepted it. Therefore, the whole family moved to live in Spain.
